I like it because it's bit perfect S/PDIF output up to and including 24/192kHz (though, it needs proprietary drivers, not standard drivers).

Good price...  Tho I'm not a fan of proprietory drivers... The DACPort doesn't need drivers, but its only headphone output...

Although it isn't as nice as an optical from the soundcard to the reciver, this little gadget has treated me pretty well the last few weeks:

The Pros:

Less than 60 bucks
Works with most any external USB Driven device, even thumb drives
Plays flac, mp3, wav, aac, and a couple of other audio codecs I care nothing about.
Plays VOB, avi, xvid, and a couple of other video codecs I care nothing about.
Optical out

The Cons:
No Support for 24 Bit
Not truly gapless (like an mp3 player type cut between tracks)



The thing is really tiny and fits great into my system.  Nice and affordable.

Nab, for a couple more dollars you could of gotten a WD media player that supports 24 bit flac. I have this version and it supports everything, 1080p, 24 bit flac, a ridiculous amount of video and pic formats (strangely enough, on Amazon, it is the same price as the mini you posted above, plus it looks sleeker):

I looked that over as well.  When I purchased the unit there was a significant price difference between the two (30-40 bucks).  I decided that the "inconvenience" of  burning a dvd-a for the odd 24 bit source wasn't really worth the money to eradicate.  Plus, if I'm going to go to the trouble of 24 bit, it might as well be gapless, something I don't think either unit supports.  YMMV.

word. The thing that pisses me off about the gapless issue is that it would require the simplest firmware update and we would be off to the races (that chip can easily be played around with). WD dropped the ball on this one.

More than likely this is an optical TOSLINK out.  You'll need an 3.5mm optical > Toslink cable to run into your receiver.  That is, if you receiver has a TOSLINK input.  If your receiver has a RCA SPDIF input, you 'll need to run the TOSLINK into a HOSA ODL276 to convert from TOSLINK to SPDIF.

thanks for the response. everything you said is pretty much what i've found on my own. all i know so far is that there is a headphone jack on the front that says spdif and i have a receiver with a normal optical digital input. i figure thats a start! :hereitisyousentimentalbastard
