sickness!  i LOVE this show... the debut of the gorge!  what a fucking unbelievable place to see a show... the best IMO...

and a great show taboot!  i'll give my review later tonight probably as i've already listened to it once today, and will again this afternoon... but a quick preview shows a sick 1st set with standout versions of ghost, wolfmans & split... plus a flawless (imo) divided sky as the sun set over the gorge (cant top that, or can you?)....

2nd set rages dwd->tweezer style... the segue is on par with the similar segue of dwd->mikes from 7/22, and the topper is the HOOD... when trey asks for chris to kill the lights so we can jam in the dark, i think i almost fainted from the sheer beauty and magnitude of the whole thing....  the gorge, the view, the sick show, and the hood in the dark!  absolutely perfect...

imo, i think this was possibly my favorite show at the gorge... great pick jonyem!

lol, that was a review in itself, but the long version coming soon (gonna try and pull a faux and write a disertation ;) )

I'm glad this is an enjoyable pick.
I know it isn't really an under the radar pick, but it's a special show to me, it's my first.
The vibe there was terrific, the set list is fantasatic and i still get tingles listening to it today.
Whenever Divided Sky comes up in conversation or i just see the title in a set list, I think of this one.

Sunset was wonderful, and the Hood in the Dark was pure beauty. It was one of the few times I've felt small and insignificant WHILE feeling a part of EVERYTHING and everyone.

I know it isn't really an under the radar pick

The more I think about it, the more I don't think it matters very much. if at all.

It seems like the further back you go the harder it is to find something "under the radar." And what's borderline under the radar for one person might be an all-time epic for another. 1994, for example, doesn't generate a lot of discussion on the paug. Are any of the July shows under the radar? June? Bomb factory or the warfield run in May? Not as I see it.

Thought about picking one of my attendeds that I always thought to be a little bit standard, to see if others saw things that I missed. But then I thought "What if I'm not wrong and it is kind of a tired, plain show?" Seems like a waste of a pick (not to mention everyone else's time). So for my turn, I think I'll just try to pick an interesting show that hasn't been discussed much in recent weeks, regardless its a monster or dark horse.

QuoteEnjoy,
seems like a safe bet

well said alumni!  i really think that each person should just pick a show that they enjoy and think others should hear... IMO it doesnt have to be "under the radar" or a hidden gem... i think it should just be a show that someone wants to share

ok i want to point this out before anyone blows their ears out or has a heartattack when the volume up high....

the source on etree for this show that i posted has 2 spots of diginoise during Hood.... i almost drove off the road just now while having it cranked in the car...

they are both during the jam section of the song... i'll give another listen (at lower volume) and post back with approx timings...

ok, i apologize, i was wrong... it wasnt diginoise... i was in our VW which doesnt have a direct line aux input, so i have to use an iTrip... and the volume on my ipod was too low, so it had a couple of spots where it had temporary connection loss...  i apologize... this is a great source!  sound is excellent, and the show rules....

incidently, this Hood is AMAZING!  definitely a favorite of mine!  and i just noticed today that during the ending "feel good about hood" part, trey says "mt. hood" during one part... funny shit, cant believe i hadnt caught that before.

I've probably listened to this show more than any other, on multiple sources, and I've never heard that. Hmm, i need to go play it again, LOUDER!

Theme>opens the show tastefully w/ nice jam after lyrics>Trey's tone sounds very shark like, jagged but not sloppy>sustain into '95 effect>Leslie?>build-up to>yet another t&r example>spacier return.

Ghost>active jam beginning, mellow Trey riffage, liquid again nice tone>boderline metal-esque jamming, Mike resounding, Page comping well, kind of clunky sounding but interesting>tempo increases slightly, Page adding subtle key motifs>Trey's tone trippy sounding, Fish rocking the cymbal, clav Page>nice jam here>Trey chording, Page clearly listening to Fish>return to riff, more swing>Trey moving up, Page on the B-3, grooving>cool beat by Fish, jam gets trippy>classic Summer '97>this style of improv would expand furthur>Page adding trippy, rave-esque sweeps>Trey simply choosing to riff out w/ the band supplying killer support, Fish's drumming near 15:00 is off the charts, hypnotic>jam fades, Trey dropping out>Fishman was playing amazing stuff.

Sky>near perfect choice>well execution, superb tone, everyone on top of their game, subtle nuances by Page>under water(the Columbia>which has its own set of ecological issues) we go...>Mike, Fish...big school of phish, celebrating>unfolding>sustain into howling stanza>more sustain, Page ripping it up>ending jam contains hits of previous metal-esque jamming>high energy ending(this tune is not a favorite ).
Tension release ex.>

Wolfman's is a nice release from the howling, crying Sky, or is it?> nice synop out of the gate, chill jamming>nice line by Mike, relaxed, Trey back into rock-riff mode>sounds like a TAB set>boring snoring, Page switching, still kind of meandering along>theme reprise, (sigh)>blues riffage, jam around 12:00 min gets interesting but Trey goes right back into Hendrix Late'69 mode.

Melt>jam begins at 4:06, all of Trey's metal-esque tones culminate w/ this tune>bt tension, dark riff, Page's comping adding only light>Trey cries(w/ the Hannaford Nuclear Waste site close by, the energy in this first set was not friendly ).  At 10:17 the jam uptempos a bit>

Rough set.

As much good as Summer '97 was, there are aspects I do not enjoy, particularly Trey's clunky, metal-esque all out riff sessions.  I think his tone sounds incredible but some of his meanderings are just plain boring and unexciting to me.  A perfect ex. is the Went Ghost>other the the last 2-3 min the playing is uneventful.

susep, question for you... when you do your reviews are you taking notes and then doing the write up or are you typing from memory, or typing while you listen?  just curious, since you always give insight with a bit more depth & technicality than most... i enjoy that.

i used to rock this second set on tape all the time!
never heard the first set until about a year ago.

Theme-love the song, and love its position.this one has the perfect length, and real nice jam.

Ginseng-Ghost-this ghost is great!they are still playing with that euro funk, even though summer US tour, i tend to put in a different "funk" catagory.pretty long version, and well-played.

DST-Sky-the composed part of sky was a tad messed up, but no biggee.the jam was nice.i always like divided sky as a first set summer tune.

Wolfman-super funky and stretched out.personally, there was nothing that really stood out in the jam for me, but it got me busting out some moves while i was washing the dishes!

H20Sky-Split-i like the old H20sky's better than the reworked version.i really do.as for this split, it is sick!great jam portion and a killer way to end a set.

DWD-Tweezer_DWD_JBG-the disease is cool.i especially like the intro, where it is obviously gonna be DWD, but they are just making some noise.radikal jam>tweezer.they kinda forget where all the changes were on this one!but the jam was flowing.i think it went on a little too long for me, but it was still good>disease....ehhhh....good effort but not silky smoove, but that is all good, you can tell they had energy>JBG.i used to hate JBG.i remember walking out of NYE 95 thinking that it was such a drag that they closed the show with it, but have since come around.this is one of the better versions of this...almost sounded like they were gonna go into oblivious fool at first.....

Sparkle-Velvet-and the old version of velvet sea i like, too.the intro with the "N20" sound (which is really just a flanger pedal turned all the way up and looped)...but i like how the solo at the end just eases out of the song (much like the old L X L's)

Cup-Reprise-this cup rocked a little more than others

Hood-would have been cool to see the first? "kill the lights...at least i saw 2, and they are special.this is a great version and super lengthy.

great pick, jon
i give this show a solid A!

Theme - Nice, nothing off the hook but a good opener.
Sullivan - Typical
Ghost - Cool, but not amazing.  Not as intense as I would have liked but good nevertheless.
Dogs - I've never loved this song.  Page is rockin it though.
Divided - NICE.  Soaring, but not over the top.  A very good one.  Quality.
Wolfman's - Proving that this is a jam vehicle is easy with this version.  I liked the jam near the end better as I thought it started kinda aimlessly.  But the smooth return to the theme yielded another little neat jam.
Water in the Sky - Never really dug it but never hated it.  It's been so long since I've even heard it.  I don't even know if I like this one or the reworked one.\
SOAMelt - Split jams are some of my favorite.  Just rockin' with that theme of the song sneaking through every now and again.  Nearly every version reminds me of the car chase in the album version.  This one is no slouch, but maybe a tiny bit unstructured for my tastes.  It's my set highlight.

Good first set, although I may not rate it that high.  I'll just give the one overall after second set.  and susep...

Quotesusep relisten without the total over the top disection... no need for that all the time...  just enjoy a great set

I think the dissection is great.  It allows you to really compare two things that are top notch (Like every show).  I think that if you didn't disect the show, you'd be saying, "that was awesome" to every show.  And that's cool actually, when you're there, but I like the analytical approach when rating a show based on the tapes.

Anyhow.  Set 2 later this week

DWD - Nice.  Around 14 minutes, it's sounding Vida Blue-ish.  I like this kind of jam.  Slow and groovy.  Great slow transition into
Tweez - A little off timing in the beginning, but leading to some great effects interaction between Trey and Page over Gordo's solid bass.  At like 24/25 minutes, it's funk tronic.  Totally my style.  Digable.  This is the kind of shit I could groove to forever.  Trey starts ripping it up at the end to go back into
DWD - which was not really even there, more like a tease which went well into
Johnny B. - I always love this rocker...  Reminds me of Michael J. Fox playing  behind his head.
Sparkle - Nice old school tune to slip in after that funk-rock fest.
Velvet Sea - Totally welcome here, but let's get back into the shizz!
Loving Cup - I'm not a huge fan of this tune and unfortunately, the set's coming to a close.  On the bright side, I really liked this version, and I thought it rocked.
Tweeprise - I love this to close a set.  Diggin' it.
HoooooooooD - Good song as an encore.  I feel good.  Mt.Hood!

For some reason, this set seemed to go real fast.  To me, all the greatness was jammed into the first songs but that didn't take away the good quality of the rest, although I then expected to hear more of that killer funk.

Set 1 and 2 combined, I don't think I can give this a "very good" rating.  There was definitely some greatness, but most of it was just damn good.  4.2112 even.

Only listened to set 1 so far - great show!!!
theme - great way to open the show. strong version
ginsent - good
ghost - some cool sounding effects from trey about 8:30, with fish on the bell. nice funky groove, but the jam doesn't have much else beside that, imo.
dogs - fun
%sky - love this song. great song, great version. i would've loved to be there at sunset
wolfman's - highlight of the set for me. trey playing some tasty licks under his vocals. great jam with all 4 involved. some great rhythms by fish, builds to a nice peak toward the end where the feeling changes a bit.
water in the sky - a little bit of a downer after the great wolfmans
split - well done, solid jam. personally, i like the 94s (6/11 stands out)

overall - great set 1
review on set 2 to come but from what I am hearing so far I predict a strong rating for DWD

Set I
Theme - Doesn't stray too far from the blueprints. Thought it might be the opening of a continuous, fluid set. In that small sense, I was kind of disappointed that the sound washed away, leaving a few moments of silence and then
Ginseng - I enjoy the bluegrass tunes, and Ive been in love w/this one ever since hearing the 12.31.93 version, w/ the roundabout tease.
Ghost - All right. A Theme->Ghost might've been a little demented, even for my tastes. Jam is nice, but maybe a bit spare (for me, anyway)
Dogs Dogs.
Sky Not a tune I really look for . . . This version's pretty good, though, and it must have been stunning at that time of evening, and at that venue, though.
wolfmans . . . is growing on me these days. I still find myself getting distracted during some of them . . . really enjoyed this one, though.
waterI prefer this style, by which I mean it's okay, I guess
splitNicely played through the composed section. Jam is very nice - I agree it's a standout version. Very different from earlier monster melts.

Set II to come

and it was played so perfectly, that I really did expect them to bust out some serious prog rock. And then ginseng. Another classic phish moment.

Set II
God, this recording is chatty. Best moment - 15 seconds into DwD . . . "Mike, you're taping this, right?" No, I just broght my home system for the lot and didn't feel safe leaving it there. I made that up, but you get the idea.
DwD when Trey whispered "rock and roll, man," shaking his fist in the air, during the 7.12.96 encore, this is probably what he had in mind. Rock n roll, man  After a great intro and a hotter-than-average DWD, the jam keeps going, but mellows out, w/some distorted bluesy riffs. This is interesting, but not THAT interesting - it's in danger of going on a bit too long (imo). Just in time, it's
TweezerWhich is also mellow to start, but I'm not complaining. Weirdness during the first chorus. Tempo goes speedupslowdownspeedupslowdown and settles on slow. Slow spacefunk in the pre-ebenezer section, and I can't help thinking I'm listening to this 10 hours too early :) Favorite part is the soaring crescendo in the final minutes leading into
JBG It's irrelevant, but I'm on the side of those whose setlists read DwD>Tweezer>JBG - it's no more than a disease tease between Tweezer and JBG, and you always have the sense that this monster's gonna keep moving forward, rather than shift back into Disease. Just my take. I've never had any problems w/JBG. Even blew me away once, at Hampton 96, when Kuroda choreographed a swirling light segment that just fell *perfectly* on Trey's guitar outro, note for effin' note. The end to this one is slower and more drawn out. I half expected them to slam into Julius.
Sparkleslow, by sparkle standards, with some almost trippy organ work. I appreciate the modest change of pace.
Wading Not a fan. Maybe if Trey were lower in the mix, it would have a different sound that I'd enjoy more. As it is . . . I'm just not a fan of this. I might be alone here. That's okay - I don't mind.
LC Fine version
TweepriseAnother fine version. And I think I'd rather get it as a setcloser than as an encore, just to keep a bit of suspense, so you're not 99% sure of what's left to be played.
Hood Exhibit A. Are you kidding?!? Almost expect more of a reaction from the crowd when this one starts. But it comes later . . . by about 6 mins :) For me a good hood completely hinges on the intricacy and patience of the rise. The ending surge is gonna happen either way, but how its perceived is determined by the build. I think that's why I enjoy the Spokane Hood from 95. And, of course, this one. Enthralling end to a great set and a very enjoyable show. I'll go with a B+ again this week.

its interesting to see how everyone grades shows week to week...  and where their biases/favorites lie....

you can tell those who prefer an older style phish, and those who enjoy the funkier/groovier stuff...  i fall in the later (duh)... and as such simply love this show...

Yeah . . . I think there's something to that. I'm also just a really stingy grader. I don't throw around "A"s lightly.

A+  once-in-a-lifetime, historic, epic, count-'em on one hand
A   a (nearly) flawless performance, 2(+) outstanding sets of creativity, energy, and flow.
A-  nearly epic, but maybe with one unexceptional set

B+  excellent, much better-than-average, may be slightly uneven, but with memorable versions of at least 2 songs
B    significantly better than average, with highly memorable version of at least one song
B-  garden variety phish. typically geat performance, but nothing historic or above the norm

I've heard performances that I wouldn't rate a B-, but so far none here, so I'll leave it at that :)

set 2 was where the action is

DWD - very cool intro, loved the jam, I would say top 10 version for me. Awesome seque into Tweezer - not quite as good as 7/22, but in the same league
Tweezer - great pre ebeneezer section, got a chuckle out of a flubbed lyric. very cool jam with nice trey-mike-page work with fish again supplying the backbone. rocks out toward the end with a nice crescendo, and ANOTHER great seque into a short DWD jam
JGB - rocknroll
Sparkle-not ready for this yet
Velvet Sea- I like this song, placement not great. would have preferred it right after JGB. I like the mellow work trey did for the solo
Loving Cup-yeaa
Tweeprixe - nice
Hood - another great version. again, wish I could've been there. Very nice, mellow jam with trey, mike and page acting as one musician. t-r section, I think around 8:30 or 9:30 (I forget, wasn't taking notes as I was driving).

Overall killer second set
A
thanks for this one joneym (and jedi for seeding)
:beers:

I'm glad this was an enjoyable pick.
It's cool how differently we each hear the same thing.
THAT'S what being a music fan is all about.

for some reason this Ghost just doesnt do it for me... i dont know why.  It could be the source... i really dont like it much at all.  But that usually shouldnt matter.  I mean, im sure if we had a soundboard of this show, thing would be completely different.  Anyway... Wolfmans Brother, yo!  This song has become my new favorite of late... partly because of this show and all the siiiiiiiick versions from 1999 that ive been listening to (I finally got it, Jedi haha) such as 7/26.  I need more big Wolfman's jams!!!  I remember people were talking down about both the 8/2/97 and 7/26/99 versions on Etree...  no way!!!
