Title: Paug Lax Thread
Post by: shoreline99 on March 16, 2012, 12:14:39 PM
My son broke his Clutch the other night in a scrimmage and I had to replace it. I forgot how much I hate restringing.

And, I almost put it through the TV watching UCONN lose last night.

I know we have a few lax heads here, figured we might as well have a thread. I've got 3 kids playing way too much lacrosse this season...

Nice   :beers:

I haven't restrung a stick in probably 10 yrs, but isn't it all mesh these days? Or do you make him use leather to stay true to your roots? Do you make him wear the old-school helmet too?

Some good matchups this weekend, UNC-Duke today at 5pm, Syracuse-Hopkins at 4pm tomorrow, and Denver-ND at 2pm Sunday. Here's the full season schedule on ESPN et. al.

Nah, it's all mesh. Still a pain in the ass if you're not paying attention and miss a diamond, and when you're using broken in mesh it can be a bitch to get the pocket right. I picked up a new Clutch 2X at LacrosseMonkey on sale w/ free shipping. Score!

Girl's sticks are still old school w/ leather shooting strings.

I laugh at these guys though who pay through the nose to have some high school kid restring heads for their kids at Lax Unlimited. Why not teach your kid to do it themselves.

That's true, and I guess you were preoccupied what with UConn shitting the bed and all.

Agreed about paying someone to do it. If you can't string your own stick you have no business on the field.

First and only time I've used them, so I can't comment one way or the other. Normally I go to ComLax or order from Sportstop.com.

Damn, just finished watching Duke spank the shit outta UVA 13-5 on the DVR from last night. Some sloppy play on both sides, but UVA looked like a bad HS team at times. I did not see that coming. Duke looked pretty shitty at times earlier this year but they always seem to get better as the tournament approaches.

Now time for Maryland-Hopkins from this afternoon!

We'll be fine. The vibe at Klockner this year has been pretty good as usual. We have shit the bed once or twice but we are ridiculously talented and we'll make a deep postseason run. I don't think a repeat is out of the question but we will definitely have to step up our game come tournament time.

I never played lacrosse, and in Charlottesville most of the people that play it are major dbags. But watching college lacrosse is money. I've never met anyone who's ever seen a professional lacrosse game or even knows what any of the teams are called.

Yeah, college is where it's at. The teams are all so talented it's rare that you don't have a really exciting game unless one team is just having an off day (a la UVA vs Duke). Even when one team jumps up by 5-6 goals, the other almost inevitably comes back and makes it a game. I'll never forget my first Final Four I went to in '94 when UVA was down by like 8 goals to Syracuse (I think) in the 4th qtr and came back and won.

Professional (outdoor) lax is aight and they do some pretty crazy shit but I had to punch out when they put a 2 pt goal and a shot clock in effect. I'm a purist. Indoor games can be pretty fun though. It's kinda like a party: lots of booze, music playing the whole time, and fights breaking out (along with some sick plays).

college lacrosse is great in that only a handful of teams have good programs and they play each other every year.
loved when boston (well, foxborough technically) had the finals.

It's growing pretty fast though as the popularity of the sport expands outside of the traditional NE hotbeds (Baltimore/Long Island/Upstate NY). A couple years ago, nearly everyone on the top teams were from those areas but now you hear stars from literally all over the country not to mention Canada. So you're seeing teams like Denver, Fairfield, Villanova, UMass & Drexel competing with the big boys (UVA, Hopkins, Syracuse, Duke).

Love a LAX thread!  I played in VA through middle and high school and am pretty stoked Seattle has a vibrant and quickly growing lacrose scene.  There are programs for elementary school kids out here(indipendant of school) and more extensive programs the older the kids get.  I see games happening every weekend now by my office so hopes of a LAX future for my son are hopeful!

Ugh. What a spring so far. My daughter's travel team schedule is driving me crazy. Game last Saturday (win), Jamboree on Sunday (split 2-2), practice tonight and Wednesday, tournament at the other end of the state on Saturday at 9am, game Sunday, game Monday, Game Wednesday....

And she's only 1 of our 4.... My older son is just doing rec league lax this season so he can do track as well, so his travel schedule isn't too bad, and my younger son is doing 'developmental' league which is Friday night clinics/Saturday games.

Wait until next year when my younger daughter is in the mix as well...

That's brutal. Mine are all under 4 so I have some time before I get into that but it doesn't sound fun. Still, something about watching little kids in their giant pads running around whacking the crap out of each other that makes you laugh.

I forgot the tournament started yesterday. Looks like Colgate over UMass was the only shocker yesterday. UVA just survived a scare from Princeton 6-5. I'm really looking forward to the Maryland-Lehigh matchup later tonight.

It was an ugly second half but we toughed it out, LaPierre took a shot to the gut in the final seconds that likely prevented overtime. I don't see our next round matchup being that tough (I think it'll be Yale) but I'm not excited about the prospect of having to go through Denver later in the tournament, they're a scrappy team that can be pretty dangerous.

Finally caught up on the DVR'd tournament. The final was a bit of a letdown but the semis were great. I'm glad Loyola won but I would like Niko Amato (who went to my HS) to get one at some point too. Still it was a great tournament.

Bump

Didn't realize the league tournaments had stated already. I'm watching Duke on a massive run against UNC, scoring 7 straight to go from 15-6 to 15-13 in the 4th. God I love playoff lax.

ETA: make that 15-14

ETA2: Duke takes the lead 17-16. UNC ties it up. This is insane.

ETA3: UNC wins. Duke has man up for 16s to end the game. They get a good look but get stuffed.

Fuck that was fun.

I can't believe how lopsided that game was. Rob Pannell is unreal. He makes everyone on that team look good. And that backhand goal was just stupid.

Great first weekend. Caught most of ND's amazing comeback and some of UNC and Albany-Denver. That guy from Albany was ridiculous; I was definitely pulling for the upset because I would have loved to see him play again (although Denver is pretty fun to watch too). Looking forward to catching up on some of the other games this week on DVR.

I've watched more than my fair share of lacrosse in my day, and watching Rob Pannell play yesterday was a treat.  He's every bit as good as any of the greats I've seen like the Powells, the gaits, Petro, those great UVA attack units of the 90's, etc.  The guy just doesn't stop moving and controls the offense with ease.  The thing that makes him great are the opportunities he creates for his teammates.  Not only does he draw the double and triple team, but his passes are crisp and right where they need to be in tight spaces EVERY TIME.  It must be alot of fun to coach a guy like that.  Anyway, Cornell handled MD yesterday and you gotta think they'll make a strong run this year.  Pannell looks determined.

I also gotta give a shout out to my old high school coach, Charley Toomey.  My heart breaks for him losing to Duke in Double Overtime yesterday.  He's fun to play for and runs a great program.  I watched that whole game and Loyola played 3 solid quarters, but seemed to fall apart in the third a bit.  Anyway, a great first round of games and I'm really looking forward to next round.

Been meaning to bump this for the past couple weeks but it always got away from me.

Great tournament, especially in the early rounds. I loved seeing Bryant knock off Syracuse in the first round (Bryant's goalie made some ridiculous saves down the stretch to hold on for the win). And watching the Thompson brothers from Albany was a real treat too; those guys do things with their sticks that I can't believe. I'm still shocked ND came back and knocked them off.

Final Four weekend always fun to watch. Great matchups and I love seeing ND lose again (Corrigan screwed me over so F that guy). I still can't believe what Tierney has done in Denver.

What did Corrigan do?

I was pretty close to going there. I talked a lot to the assistant coach who I met at 205 going into my junior year. I was pretty close to going there to play. Senior year, Corrigan came to my house and met with me and my parents. I was going through some shit and not living at home at the time so we all put on a happy face when the coach came over but there was some real awkward energy. Next thing I know the assistant coach called and said they weren't going to be able to get me in and that was it.

I mean, I don't know if it was the meeting or if the admission thing was real (my grades were good my first 2 years but were sliding junior/senior year). He made a decision that he thought was in the best interest of the team and I absolutely understand it (and, in hindsight, it was the right decision as I separated my shoulder in the first round of the state playoffs and never played (other than club) again). But going to ND was kind of a dream and he just left a real shitty taste in my mouth after the meeting. So, to reiterate, F that guy.

Also, I have a soft spot for Duke after the thing a couple years ago.

I got all today's games in my DVR, but I'll prob be playing catchup all week. I did see some of Lyle Thompson's highlights; that guy is unreal. I'm glad Albany won cause I want to see him play as many games as possible.

It's weird, I've never really paid much attention the the MLL. Maybe it's the 2-point shot that bugs me, but I'm much more interested in the college game. I love this tournament.

Nice to see MD men and women's teams win the National Championship this weekend!  First for the men in 42 years!

Boom! My son will be heading to UMD in the fall, he was pretty stoked to see that this weekend. We were down there when they beat Penn earlier in the season and the place went pretty nuts.
