Post by: mbw on May 28, 2011, 11:27:31 PM
Phish - 05/282011 - Bethel Woods Center for the Arts - Bethel, NY

Set I:  Theme from the Bottom, NICU, Cities, Halley's Comet > Runaway Jim, Gumbo, Quinn the Eskimo > Limb by Limb, Horn, Bathtub Gin > Manteca > Bathtub Gin

Set II:  Down with Disease > Free, Backwards Down the Number Line, Makisupa Policeman* -> Harry Hood, Cavern, David Bowie

E:  A Day in the Life

*With lyrics referencing several band members' houses (and Trey's favorite show, House).

My thoughts are that everything up until Hood was fairly fucking awesome.  Numberline, Makisupa, Gin, Jim and the Halley's are all fantastic.

Hood and Bowie will receive some residual fluff, because of this.

Great show, but still not up to the bands full potential.

I give it a "B".

gotta be optimistic about the direction they're heading. We've been hearing some very encouraging stuff imo.

The little bit I heard via stream (from Makisupa onward) sounded positive for the overall direction of the band. More patience, a little more interplay, continuing to have fun on stage. Really enjoyed some of these jams, looking forward to checking out the whole show tomorrow.

I'll likely sit out this year unless there's some surprise shows in the fall. Kid #3 and some major house renovations aren't going to leave a lot of time or $. A show at DC would've been a possibility, but as it stands, I'll be hoping Trey or Mike swing by St. Louis again later this year.

Honestly, you might be a little disappointed with it.  The Runaway Jim, I thought was the best part of the first set.

Being honest and realistic about it.  I thought the manteca was pretty sloppy, and the gin ended before it truly hit it's stride.  It was good, but not as good as it could have been.

The Disease isn't forced, but it's not huge either.  ~15 minutes.  The Numberline is pretty fucking bad ass, though.

What I'm saying is this:  sometimes at a phish show I am moved to "spin" for long stretches. Yes, I am occasionaly  "that guy" spinning in the isle. That was me tonight. A bit tipsy on booze, no weed no other drugs, nothing... But that was me tonight. It was that good.

And, seriously, the last time that happened to me was 1995. So, perhaps tha says something. They were in it tonight. I loved this show.

Take that for what it is. I can't help but say there has been progress. These shows pick up where late fall left off IMO.

love it. can you build a foundation for continual progression of the band?

I fuckin hope so.

I streamed the second set at work, so i didn't get to pay too close attention.  However, i def.noticed some better chops and a much better band interaction than i saw, read, and listened to of last fall.

I got to listen to the first set before bed last night and it was pretty good. Cities was smooth, Halley's was nice and extended, the Jim was short but different, Trey was ripping shit up on the Quinn, LxL was full of evidence that Trey has been practicing, and then the Ginteca that thing was just plain awesome.
I'm throwing set II on my ipod for the drive to work today. I am very excited to hear it. The boys are moving forward and that's a good thing!

Exactly the takeaway for me, at least from listening to the stream. It's true as faux and others have pointed out that they aren't all the way "there" yet, but I've been trying to be a more glass-half-full person lately, and the fact that they are playing this well this early in the tour has me pretty excited. Just a solid show all around from what I heard, which was about 90% of it.

They aren't rushing jams, Trey is finally letting things develop organically, and they've clearly been practicing. Only time will tell, but this is exactly the kind of foundation they need for the rest of the tour, so I'm pretty optimistic. Too bad $$ and geography are going to keep me from seeing any of it in person, but oh well.

I sorta missed Halleys > Jim as I was installing air conditioners (Summer is here!) but this first set is pretty good so far. Horn is just starting now and I'm marking Theme & Limb2x as highlights.

Theme was pretty hot. It's one song I'm especially critical of, partially because I love it so much and partially because they haven't been playing it that well in 3.0. I actually had to skip back and listen to a few trey licks because of the heat.

Gotcha. That's what I was assuming from 5/27's show.
I want to hear/see some more shows before I can think of actually calling it 3.1 in my book anyway.
BUT, this is a good start for sure.

I can't help but say there has been progress. These shows pick up where late fall left off IMO.

They aren't rushing jams, Trey is finally letting things develop organically, and they've clearly been practicing. Only time will tell, but this is exactly the kind of foundation they need for the rest of the tour, so I'm pretty optimistic.

yup

What if they are using AT&T's plan and using their rollover tweeprises to save up all for one show :D

One set made up of a bunch of crazy insane tweeprises!!

Halfway through Harry Hood and this show FLOWS so well... not a down moment thus far in set II.  I was worried about the Free, which I pretty much consider a buzzkill set-killer at times, and this one was perfectly placed, imo, and just sounded GOOD!

I don't think the Hood is patient at all.  Same with the Gin.  Trey wasn't straight up "aborting" jams last night, but I wouldn't exactly call him patient.

I think a jam like the 12/31/95 Weekapaug shows patience.  Trey's problem right now isn't that he's unwilling to stretch jams out, but he's unwilling to patiently listen to everyone else (especially page) and wants to force a jam to rawk out and be awesome.

That said, I'm glad you're enjoying phish so much.

I kind of think that would be lame.

what's lame is them playing a whole show plus a song or two in the encore then everybody turning to each other and saying "here comes Tweezer Reprise"

I'm reminded of the Weekapaug in Cinci '03 which was like the 4th song. I wasn't expecting it then and there and it was badass

I was expecting it (the Weekapaug in second night Cincy) and I know what you're getting at, but I disagree.  I think the bookmarking of the sets is a good idea that wasn't expected Friday night.

I wonder if they'll play Friday during the encore tonight ;)

you were expecting the Weekapaug mid first-set? you're good.

I agree about Friday (the day, not the song).  the thing is though that once they didn't play Reprise it became immediately apparent they were saving it for the very end.  idk maybe they'll surprise me

I think not playing at all and saving it for the very end of tour would be cooler than playing it mid first set today.  Mid set today makes absolutely no sense and would be a noodle scratcher that wouldn't show any cleverness at all.  I get it that you think the Tweeprize is predictable, however throwing some unpredictability into the mix is very cool.  However defying all of the logic of the placement of Tweeprize (which throwing it into a random first set of the run is, imo) kinda of ruins the effect, kinda of like a movie where all logic that the movie builds up goes out the window.

I wasn't specifically thinking that the Weekapaug would show up in the first set, however it was obvious that they were going to play it sometime throughout the second night.  I wasn't surprised at all that it popped up in the first set tho.  That segue out of Piper is pretty damn cool, though.

Tweezer Reprises are a dime a dozen.  I love it and never really get tired of it but I think placing it somewhere it usually isn't placed makes it a cooler version.  I get everything you're saying though.

:beers:  For a good discussion that doesn't devolve into us being butthurt because we have slightly differing opinions.

It would have been mesmerizingly cool if they randomly played Tweeprize in the first set of the first show and then encored the third night with Tweezer.

I don't think Trey can think about it that abstractly yet ;)

Just got back to Boston from my single night of Bethel.  Too tired to post a full review, but I enjoyed this show a lot more than I thought I would.  It could be because I had the ideal seat for the night, or it could be because the band went to a few places that I have only seen one other time in 3.0, the Seven Below/Ghost from Albany 09.  And the extended Halley's was a nice treat as well.

I'll have to give it a re-listen soon, but the Disease jam got into this cool little pocket for a bit.  I say "cool" because they were actually doing some things with the music, jamming if you will, and it was kind of neat to see the band jam a song out in a way that I could actually say to myself, "they are jamming, I don't care much for this particular jam, but they are jamming".  I'm not sure how to explain that feeling, but it was nice to have more than one moment of "it" at a show to choose from.

Do you guys disagree with the official notation lacking a proper "Manteca"?

I think the band fully played Manteca, as mike started "teasing" the bass line about 20 seconds before the song.

I think some people fail to remember that the original album version of Manteca is only about :29 long.

What do you guys think?

I say it's a Gin-->Manteca-->Gin

I also think there is a significant Plasma tease by Trey in Halley's. In the last 4 minutes.

This Cities is really good. Not Berkeley good, but I could listen to Trey play like that all night.

Only up to the Jim, but this shit is banging!  The whole house is rocking...Trey seems to have had a little fire lit under his ass, he's getting after it.  His tone has changed slightly, and there are some subtle changes to his playing that makes me think hes been doing some practicing during the Spring.  Did he take some lessons from Clapton?  Heard some stuff I've never heard Trey do, which rocks.  Like I said, I am only on the Jim but I am VERY much digging this.  Why is  NY so far, now I am jonesing to go to IX....

Another decent show, perhaps a nod or two above 27May.  Absolutely love the Halley's > Jim.  Once I realized they were going to jam Halley's, jubilation.  Sure not a 20+ min. version but still preety good and the segue into a rocking/Jerry Harrison-esque Jim was tits as well.  MC called a set ending Gin ala 9July2003 in the LST, nice call.
From set II I liked the DwD, Trey sounds more intentful in both his rythym and lead playing.  Backwards was good also, again Trey playing some nice consonant and for 3.0, creative lines.  The Makisupa is super w/ Mike's, Page's and the on a dime segue into Fishman's house Harry Hood.  Even w/ the level of improv. noticeably better, they also are bringing back their spontaneity in sets/song selection.  Ending the set w/ Bowie is the icing.
Sure its early but hey its better then me complaining about Trey's inability to play or their complete lack of gestalt whereas in the first 2 shows we're hearing a different band.

I'm definitely hearing the effortless/relaxed quality that I heard in the 1-1-11 Twist surface again.

While I wouldn't label this show as amazing or anything, I don't see how anybody couldn't be encouraged by the jams here, particularly the Gin and DWD.  Let's hope that this story continues to develop. . .

The Gin was great, but I find the Disease to be the same 3.0 rendition, complete with the spacey outro.
I'm not crazy about the Manteca, tho.
It's kinda like the Manchester show where they were just throwing in stuff for it to be rad.
The Manteca was just thrown in there last night (over a hot Golden Age groove) and was way pitchy, Dog.

Hmmm, I heard something in that DWD that sounded a bit unique to me, more of a melodic mellow groove than the standard issue 3.0 space.

I don't really like the Manteca either, but they're definitely playing an off key sped up manteca...I think it is coincidental that it sounds like "Golden Age".

It is obviously a full band manteca and not a tease.  You can hear manteca for about 30 seconds before the lyrics come in (I just listened to it.)

Finally listened to the first set last night, I really enjoyed the Theme opener, Haley's was fun and unexpected.   Gin had great potential but the > Manteca killed it for me, more a gimmick than on the spot creativity IMO.  Still have not played this DWD.

Okay, so no one else seems to be freaking out about this show too much so allow me.....

THIS SHOW WAS FUCKING FANTASTIC!!!!!  :wtu:  Definitely one of the better 3.0 shows played.

Theme opener.
Rockin' cities.
HALLEYS JAM!!!!!
Jammed out plinko-funk in the middle of Jim
Best 3.0 Gin yet?
Great ambience @ the end of DWD
NUMBER LINE!!!!!!!!!
and the most fun Makisupa I have seen. PAGE'S HOUSE!!!!  and a seriously slick segue into Harry Hood :smoke:

The show flowed so fantastically and the band seemed incredibly relaxed.  This show gets me SO excited for the rest of summer!

Normally I do too, but I think that the schtick's are extremely well played.  The Bowie is my fave 3.0 version, after the trey flubs, Page's mcgrupp solo is divinely inspired and the Split features some pretty crucial jamming both going into and coming out of the have mercy.  Utica is a really solid show, imo, and I was ready to hate it.

Manchester might be overrated, but the second set is totally solid from beginning to end.

Totally. Just about every other thing about that sequence slays me.

As for this show, I just got the chance to listen to this today while I was working and my first impressions are :
Halleys is good, but Jim is fucking awesome!
Quinn is good, sounds like they're having fun.
Gin is badass, and I actually really enjoyed the double time Manteca. High energy, doesnt sound forced to me, lots of fun.
I was working so I kind of missed the DWD, but Free - there's something they're doing with the rhythm during the verses, as a full band, that got me really pumped. I'm not normally that excited for Free, but whatever they were doing there works for me.
Two years ago I never would have thought I'd say this, but goddamn BDTNL can jam! Again, not a favorite song for me at all, but I liked this one.
Goofy-ass Makisupa is goofy-ass.
Hood and Bowie were both pretty good.

Best 3.0 show, easily

Fantastic playing by all 4 band members, and especially Trey

The return of dark edgy psychedelic jamming!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unbelievable night to behold -and at the best shed I know of on the east coast -can't wait to return

An all around amazing weekend, even if Sunday was just standard safe phish

easily? no so sure about that but definitely a great show and top 5 of 3.0.    the Haley's is a little all over the place but it's the highlight of the show for me, the DWD unfortunately I'm not getting the hype, but then again I only listened to it once.

again, the Haley's is great, I feel like it has an Antelope/Headphones Jam sound to it, especially the way Mike and Fish are deep rooted in the pocket.   I think Trey kinda blew it with a little whhhaaaale action, then found a theme to wrap around and then....mike whips out the wet bass sound and poof, it's over

One thing I think is very important to note here. A lot of us (my self included at times) thought 3.0 was a "nostalgia act". These first sets of the summer definitely show forward progress from a band that many thought unable or unwilling.

They can still be a nostalgia act and play good shows.  If you think that 5/28 was some kind of "beacon of light" that proves Phish is capable of new transcendental things, you've really just overblown the fact that they played just one good show.

My biggest complaint before was a lack of creativity.  The Bethel Woods shows had some creative playing.

Other things that suck about 3.0 are still there:
a rather harsh PA sound
the fans who just start screaming whenever a jam gets quiet or ambient
a lot scene that makes me want to skip the encore so I don't have to put up with it
abusive and distracting lights from Kuroda... a bigger rig is not better
an abundance of material from Joy
etc.

Yes. I can agree with that statement. Haven't listened to this show. Haven't found the time to yet been working in the new deli at work everyday.

bit by bit on this one...

1. as for nostalgia: they debuted how many songs on this run? right. Perhaps playing creatively with the old songs isn't nostalgia, but really, it is. I'm all about it, though. I've been seeing this band for nearly 20 years and that's not as long as many of the folks i see at show after show. I'm a fan.
2. the PA sound: I hear ya sort of, but it doesn't really bother me. The sound is really good all over the place... actually, it gets worse as you get closer, which sucks.
3. fans screaming: Ha... you ain't wrong on that front. I mean there have always been screamers at all sorts of moments, but now it's like "they're really getting there" whenever something that's not scripted happens. I could feel the crowd surge when Halley's went just a few bars longer than "normal," for instance. It's kinda funny to me.
4. Lot scene - whatever. It ain't 1995 anymore. The nitrous mafia is out of fucking hand. It's disgusting. But it doesn't really get to me. I can still roll my eyes at it.
5. Kuroda - too busy, lately, imo. Not sure it's the number of lights (though he definitely added a bunch since fall). To me it's the impatience... he goes from look to look at such a pace. It's like Trey slamming into the next tune before a real jam can develop. My favorite Kuroda work is always when he lets one thing unfold over a long long stretch. He never does that anymore. Way too busy.
6. I like that they have confidence in the newer material. I want more! I wish they were writing. I'm ready for a new batch of songs.

The crowd starts to get loud when they get impatient.  When Waves starts to get into this weird ambient droning, they start cheering... the result?  Prince Caspian.

The PA sound is just plain bad.  It's loud and thin and digital.  I'm a big proponent of digital audio technology, but all those plug-ins with the digital board just tires out my eardrums.

I agree that the crowd is annoying.  However, you blaming the crowd for the jam ending is simply here say.  There have been many times over the years when the crowd has cheered as if the song is ending and the band has continued to jam.  You can't blame the crowd because the band chooses to end a jam.  Unless you are one of the four guys on stage and you say "yeah, we were thinking about keeping that waves going, but we heard a lot of applause to signify that we were done so we went into caspian".

Why don't you just get behind the board and slip notes to the sound guy? I'm sure he'd be very receptive to your input. I mean, you are mattstick, after all.

Crowd wasn't impatient at the end of Waves. Bruins just won the Eastern conference finals at that moment. Saw A LOT of Bruins fans there. The guys in front of me who i became friends with were huge fans. and were glad they won.

I don't know enough about sound systems to comment, but I can hear the band really well all over the place. It's certainly better than it was in the early-to-mid-90's when I had trouble hearing Page and could almost never hear Mike. As for the tiredness of your eardrums, me too. Not sure that's any different from previous eras, though. It's 3+ hours of loud music.

Listening fatigue is a symptom of digital music.

I'd suggest reading Greg Milner's "Perfecting Sound Forever" by Greg Milner, he gets into the science behind it.

I wasn't claiming it was a "beacon of light" or a ground breaking performance. If that's how you took it, I apologize, as it's not at all what I meant.
I definitely see the points you are making about the crowd/lot scene. It's all a partnof the experience, but I definitely do my best to keep the music and scene separate.
Songs from Joy are just going to happen, until they release a new record, and then well get those. Just how it is. I'm not really happy with it either, but I do dig a few of these tracks.

They have a separate mix for the SBD feed, which is paired with some mics jacked up at the mix position.  It's not that the sound is bad in the venue, it's loud, it's clear, but it's thin and digital and the longer you listen to it, the worse it seems to sound.

PA sound regardless, this was my favorite show since Red Rocks '09.

The NYE-style staccato jamming reared it's head a few times (Halley's, Gin, #Line), and the band was really locked into the groove during Runaway Jim.  Good placement out of Halley's too.

I loved the Makisupa, it reminded me of the "Bring the Dude" jam.  I think Mr. Minor wrote that we would all like to live at Page's house.  WTF was Fish thinking with his Makisupa "keyword"... corn?

I really really enjoyed the Makisupa as well.  Did Fish really say "corn"?  I thought he said "porn".

My favorite part about it was how Page ripped the final solo in Makisupa.  It was reminscent of the MMW w/ Trey version of Partido Alto from Albany '00.

It may be that it's too loud... but it sounds so good out on the lawn that it's hard to complain... Like it sounds better for 85% of the crowd than it ever has and 15% it's too loud for have the best seats in the house.

It was. The thing I like is that Trey is playing better... there way fewer cringe-worthy moments in Trey's solos than there have been for most of 3.0. I'm not talking about flubs like Coil, I'm talking about his improvised solos. They are better. LxL has a great one, too. And the first half of Waves from Friday was fantastic fingerwork, too.

I'm lovin' it.

That first set was a good as I've heard in 3.0. I could give that whole set a re-listen straight through cringe-free and not even consider skipping a song. I can't think of another 3.0 set I could say that about. Obvious highlights are the Halley's > Jim and the Gin but I also dug the Cities and I'll even go so far to say I enjoyed the Limb which is usually a throwaway song for me.

I love how in Halley's right at the point they have been slamming into the next song (~5:40) Trey pauses like he's ready to force something, but then he finally let's go. I'm picturing Mike giving him a look like "Fuck you, dude. The 3 of us are just gonna keep playing this." You can hear a little extra pep in Mike's first few lines. The Jim was nice and I dug the "plinko-funk" jam here better than in KDF the night before. And the Gin had me bouncing in my chair at work, although I agree the the Golden Age jam was much more interesting than singing the lyrics to Manteca (I'd call that a tease, fwiw, since it never really felt like Manteca to me). It didn't ruin the Gin for me because it felt more organic than the 10-30 Led Zep shenanigans or even Utica. But it was def unnecessary and seemed to shorten what could have been a really top notch Gin.

I'll echo what's already been said in that this may not be the face melting shit we were expecting 3 years in, but it certainly shows some serious improvement. On to set II.

Werd. You should be in love with Mike!

Oh, I'm gay for all of 'em. Aren't you?

I was gay for Jeff.

yeah, bummer about him getting hitched to the big J. I thought we had a chance.

No augusto means he was "literally" gay for Jeff.  It's a long story...

Holy shit this Gin is killing!!!!  I love how patient Trey was in the start, and the way Fish was like "I'm fuckin' with this rythm, YO" early on.

Theme - Meh.  Cool opener, Trey was totally not together at all.  Meh.
NICU - right on

Cities - YEAH.  Deeeeep, thick, and SHRED TREY!!!!!!!!!!!!!  The end of this jam was fucking fantastic; they should have kept it up for wayyy longer.

Halleys - mixed feelings about this.  Many, many, many times in this jam someone, be it Trey or Page, had established a REALLY cool theme to jam on, but nobody seemed to be listening to anybody else.  Especially the last few minutes, Trey had found quite a few really cool themes, but Mike was fucking against anything; he was playing some really annoying dissonant stuff that had nothing to do with anything anybody else was playing.  He ruined this one, imo.  For whatever reason, he just wasn't into it, and kept it from achieving the liftoff that was readily apparent to me, at least.

LOL calling trey "patient" is to 2011 what "permagroove" is to 1996.

Anyone pick up on some "A Love Supreme" in the "Halley's"? Starting around 8:45 in the LP version.

Trey sounds tighter/more precise/more practiced on the composed Bowie sections here. Anybody who's better at this than me care to comment?

The solo Trey takes in this Cities remains one of the best things he's played all tour.

Although I'm only up to July 3 in listening, I have to say I wholeheartedly agree.
