Looks like the first and second sets should have been swapped. That was a ton of songs for a second set...assuming all radio friendly versions of songs.

Rock and Roll went out there and it sounded like the best Piper in awhile as well.

I like how the past few shows have opened up with Bluegrass covers that haven't been played in awhile.

My prediction for tonight is a Bluegrass version of Crowd Control to open.

That is a monster 2nd set. Assuming nothing went longer than 10 mins though. Reminds me of that merriweather 2000 1st set where it just felt like it was never gonna end. Cant wait to give this a spin. Maybe they'll go the opposite tonight and do a 5, 6 song second set and open it up?

textbook Horse force and Wading is always an energy drain.  and I'm really starting to HATE Show of Life.

Merriweather is always a beat scene but yesterday was the beatest I'd ever seen it.

Show of Life, Joy, and just about every other 3.0 song shouldn't be played after the midway point in set 1

Man...maybe it's because I only see one show a summer and I never got to see phish pre '09 but I was slightly bummed about the second set.  I just felt that Tweezer was going so well and I really thought I felt them stretching it out but alas > The Horse killllled the night for me.  Then the R&R forcing and the Waves crap ending.

It would have been awesome (not in a good way) if it went Tweezer->Horse Force->Fuckerpants.  I would have laughed my ass off.  And yeah, Merriweather can be a pretty beat lot scene, but besides the first two 3.0 shows, it is generally a good venue for shows if you are in the Pav....saw JGB there in the 80's and the lot scene and show was dope....Phish in '92 with Santana, not dope.  Phish in '99 and 2000= Epcot Center....

haven't gotten there yet but for some reason I was convinced they were about to head into No Quarter as that Tweezer faded out. made the HF even worse for me.. have always loved Silent though so I got over it pretty quick.  Wading can go fuck itself though.

Page kills On Your Way Down in every way. badass cover for him

I was stoked for my second Reba in 40 shows. solid version by 3.0 standards

Agreed on both fronts. Never was a huge fan of Phish covering other people's music except for Halloween (they don't need to, imo), but On Your Way Down is tight butthole. It is like the new JJLC.

On Your Way Down was killer. I was way stoked to get that.

Also, Mike's Fender bass for Show Of Life was sweet.
He had to bust the mad quick-change to get back to the Modulus for TweePrise.

The low point was definitely Wading in the Velvet Sea for me. I thought that piper was on point and when they went into wading it just slammed on the brakes. I was also a little disappointed with the way they went into CDT but I thought it was well-played so that sort of made up for it.

I knew that, but however, I really dig Twenty Years Later, and you have to admit, that even though it's a 3.0 tune, it's light years better than Wading in the Velvet Sea, in this position especially...

I once ate a yogurt on the train with a spoon.
Back in the day when this band was still good.
I don't touch the nipples I just give them a slice.
I brought out a special guest and his name was Bo Bice.

I did lots of blow but preferred the downside
I once took my drugs in my car for a ride
Since the cops went and separated us on that day
It seems like I sorta forgot how to play

Back in the day when this band was still good.
I don't touch the nipples I just give them a slice.
I brought out a special guest and his name was Bo Bice.

Now that's funny. Lolz.

I like Velvet sea too, just think the dark mysterious Twenty Years Later would have been a much better fit than than very slow melodic overtones of Velvet Sea, coming in right after that pretty nice Piper jam...

I'm sorry, but I do not and will not hold this band to a flame of expectations to play the way they did throughout most of the nineties...

But I still wish that they would play more Piper jams like this, even if they're condensed to being in the time constraints of only 10 minutes... And of course my biggest gripe being that all Ghosts should be at least 15 minutes+, as well as all second set Tweezers... and I wish that they would float jams between some of the oldie, but goodie songs, like Halley's, Cities, and Tube, etc... But I'll limit my bitching to that...

For a Piper that just broke the 10 minute mark, I really like the energy it possesses, also like the building sequence from about the 4:30 mark through about 7:00, also like the fact that they didn't immediately delve off into some spaced out/ambient jam after the completion of the build, is it par with a `97 - `00 Piper, almost definitely not, but at least they brought it, Page with those jazz chords late in the song, just puts the right finishing touches on it for me... I just enjoyed this Piper!!

But after listening to the only Twenty Years Later from 5/29, I would like to retract my other statement, because it was absolutely awful in comparison of the past two years.

I actually surprisingly liked the Blossom piper.

This piper suffers from the same thing I hate about most post-99 pipers, and that is the annoying ass beat that fishman keeps playing that interferes with any true improv, imo.

I was happy that the Blossom piper didn't have the same thing.

Second set is full of gems. Waves is absolutely killer, and if you can forgive the whack transition into CDT, that's actually not too shabby either. Of course, Suzy takes the cake for me. On mahfuckin' point.

I just listened to the Wilson > Sand as well and I concur. I also listened to set II this morning while I was walking the dog and aside from the retarded horse force, CDT force, and Wading force, I thought the set was killer. And the CDT was well-played and interesting (to a degree) but I feel that this is overlooked because the transition was whack. I personally thought they recapitulated Waves too soon and didn't pause between the end of waves and the beginning of chalkdust, but hey that's just me.

Proper (white-tableclothe) etiquette states that you should introduce any female companion as "Miss Henrietta Tubman" or "My friend, Tits McGee" until such time as you are properly engaged to be married.  This is regardless of co-habitation or whether or not you are digging her out on the regular.  The change can be quite jarring to some gentlemen.

I'm watching the Wilson>Sand video...... and I just noticed something:  Trey is tapping.  He's doing the Joe Satriani variety, where he uses the side of his pick instead of his fingertip but its still the same thing.

Has he ever done this before?  I didn't know Trey even knew about finger tapping lol....  or am I just totally clueless again, like how I didn't realized until only recently that Mike says "yo check this out" in Fluffhead?

This is a pretty bitchin' hot version of Wilson, too....   and I thought the transition into Sand was pretty killer.  Great flow and perfect placement, imo.

EDIT:   This Sand is chair-bounce heaven!!!!!!!!  Fucking fantastic Sand!!!  The ending is especially enjoyable; I love how they fuck with it and drop out parts of the beat.  Trey was really good in there, too; very great tension builds and he even does a few sweep picking licks and is in great command in general.  He uses a littttle too much "out" playing for my personal tastes, but others may love it; if you do, this Sand is what you'll flip for.

You thought Trey didn't know about finger tapping?

I'm pretty sure he's heard Van Halen before.

haha yeah I mean, I'm sure he knew about it's existence, but I meant more of like... knowing about it in order to use it during a show sort of thing.  Like, that he didn't realize it was there to be done, or that it was available to him...  that it was something he could do in a song, like using a wah pedal for a solo, for instance, or switching to the neck pickup.

I'm confident Mike used to say "check it out".  The first "check this out" I remember was Red Rocks '09.

he says both.  'it' then 'this'
even on junta.

Fluffhead is just so long, with so much going on, I doubt I really noticed the "it/this".

I'm not really a fan, to be honest.

I was talking to a fellow guitar player about tapping, specifically about how we tried to learn "Eruption", and I kind of blew his mind when I said "Yeah, every once in a while I throw some of that in.  If you know the scale, you know what places you can tap".  He was kind of a "classic rock, memorize the solo" guy, but still, if the only tapping you've ever done is memorizing Van Halen and Randy Rhoads solos, you might not realize that they're just the same notes, different hand.

Also,

I thought Gumbo never heard him say Anything at all before?
