Funny. Rush is a really divisive band in the music community. You either love 'em or you can't stand 'em. Being a Canadian and a drummer basically means I have to love 'em, but between you and me, I can't stand 'em. I say between you and me because, in Canada, Rush is enshrined in our constitution. Yeah, we have really strange constitutions up here, none of that second amendment rights bs. We have stuff like "whenever you hear Rush on the radio, you must cease all activity and commence headbanging and air drumming". Crazy eh!

They are divisive in a very similar way as Phish... people who like them geek out a bit too much, imo. But then who am I to say. I'm trying to figure out how to get to my 100th Phish show at some point in 2010.

Snakes and Arrows was a great tour. Complete with Bob & Doug McKenzie and the kids from South Park.

I saw Rush in 92...  Primus opened for them, it was awesome...  I also saw them in 90 and thought that was very good...

I didn't see them again until Snakes a few years ago...  I have to admit, I liked old Rush better...

I was gonna say...I've been seeing them since '82 (2 nights at Radio City boyee!) and have never seen it.  Might have seen it in '83 but I doubt it....Moving Pictures is not my fave album by a longshot, but I might go.....If they played 2112 or Farewell to Kings complete, I'd jizz....

QuoteThe Rush  documentary Rush: Beyond The Lighted Stage will be in theaters nationwide in June. Exact cities and dates to be announced later.

This exciting news comes on the heels of the worldwide film premiere at Tribeca Film Festival on April 24 as well as the recent announcement of a 40-city "Time Machine Tour" to kick off on June 29 in Albuquerque, NM. This tour will feature the entire Moving Pictures album in its entirety.

Holy shit, Rush playing Moving Pictures in its entirety?
I had no idea! :-o
I also was able to catch the S&A tour... I believe they opened with Witch Hunt, though we weren't inside yet (which upset me as I was not comfortable with the idea of missing that song)!

Nah, I'm a Canadian drummer and I don't care for them much at all. I actually don't think Rush is too big where I live (Vanc Island), probably more of an east coast thing.

Even in Canada there's an East Coast-West Coast rivalry. So who killed Canadian Tupac?

Well, the case is still unsolved, but it seems like retaliation resulted in the death of Canadian Biggie (John Candy).  Also still unsolved.

Crazy eh!
Nah, I'm a Canadian drummer and I don't care for them much at all. I actually don't think Rush is too big where I live (Vanc Island), probably more of an east coast thing.

I have a good friend on Vanc Island, lives on Hidden Plateau......It's awesome there....
Huh? Where's Hidden Plateau, I can't seem to find it on google maps.

My bad...Forbidden Plateau...

http://islandmountainrides.com/riding-regions/forbidden-plateau/ (http://islandmountainrides.com/riding-regions/forbidden-plateau/)

he lives pretty far up north, he's a logger and works way up on the island...hoping to get up there this summer, maybe for the music festival if we can find the time....
Ah, I know where that is, right by the skiing, it's a great area. I live bout 2 hours south of there in Cowichan Valley. Which festival is this? The one at Providence Farms?

I've still got my baseball hat from the Signals tour (and two shirts) and my painters hat from Grace Under Pressure tour-- it glows in the dark!  I've also got the programs from the first three tours I saw.....Last time I went to Rush at MSG with my wife, there were HUGE lines for the men's room and no lines for Ladies...when do you ever see that?!?!

Neil Peart to perform drum solo on Late Show with David Letterman

http://artistdata.sonicbids.com/rush/news/neil-peart-to-perform-drum-solo-on-late-show-with-david-letterman/80558/
QuoteCBS has announced that Neil Peart will be the grand finale to a "drum solo week" on Letterman the week of June 6th (yes, you read that right).

The rhythm section gets its due when the LATE SHOW with DAVID LETTERMAN presents "Drum Solo Week," featuring some of the finest drummers in music, Monday, June 6-Thursday, June 9 (11:35 PM-12:37 AM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

The air drumming from home begins on Monday June 6th with a drum solo performance by the LATE SHOW's very own Anton Fig, longtime drummer for Paul Shaffer and the CBS Orchestra.

On Tuesday, June 7, renowned drummer and percussionist Sheila E. performs on the broadcast.

On Wednesday, June 8, legendary drummer Roy Haynes, who has performed with such jazz greats as Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Sarah Vaughn, will take the Ed Sullivan Theater stage.

And the finale drum solo performance of the week on Thursday, June 9  goes to Neil Peart, drummer for the legendary rock band Rush and regarded as one of the greatest drum soloists in rock music.

Funny story yesterday. I have a sekret drawer I keep all my tickets to upcoming shows in. Recently we've been trying to get the house cleaned up, you know, clear out all the junk that has accumulated over the past 4-5 years. Part of that mission was to clean out the ticket drawer. So I very carefully went through and checked every envelope to make sure there wasn't tickets left in any of them, or stubs. The empty envelopes I threw away, or other stuff in there (letters from loved ones etc) I removed and put away in a file I designated for those types of documents.

Fast forward to yesterday, I'm talking to my buddy about coming to pick up his half of the Rush tickets, since he is heading over to New Orleans before I am next weekend, and when I get off the phone I get a funny feeling about the tickets I had in the ticket drawer. After I heat up some Publix brand spaghetti and meatballs I go take inventory of the drawer's contents, which include MMJ + Neko Case, Voodoo Fest, and Phish summer tour tickets. NO RUSH! Jesus Christ, did I throw away my Rush tickets? I must have, there is no other explanation since all my tickets always go into the sekret drawer. Luckily, due to Memorial Day, the trash pickup dates confused me, so I never took the garbage out to the street, so I can still go get my tickets from the trash which has been sitting in the outside garbage can for a week, in the Alabama sun, the same week I for some reason made Matza ball soup for the first time, ate half of it, then dumped the rest in the garbage can.

So I am outside with no shirt on for some reason like a crazy person picking through my matza ball soup covered trash. I dump all the trash in my yard, and slowly go through it piece by piece, throwing it in a new garbage can. I find all the envelopes I threw away, soaking in soup and garbage funk, but none of them have my Rush tickets. I clean up the garbage, go inside, take a shower, then check my ticket STUB drawer. Underneath them all is an envelope with my Rush tickets.

Would have been nice to just check there first. :)

Rush this Friday! Yeah!!

Anyone know how late Rush comes out usually? They don't strike me as the type to come out late, but I'm hoping they do, as we'll be cutting it real close getting to the arena.

Yeah!! :banana:O

Anyone know how late Rush comes out usually? They don't strike me as the type to come out late, but I'm hoping they do, as we'll be cutting it real close getting to the arena.

Funny....have fun at the show.  They are coming here, I might go if I can find a cheap ticket.  They probably come on pretty early...last time I saw them I barely made it in for the opener.

Yeah, they are quite punctual, and be forewarned YYZ will not be played until the encore.

I thought they are doing Moving Pictures in it's entirety in order on this tour.

Really!?!?!  Maybe I should shell out the $70 bucks to see them again then. I F'n LOVE Moving Pictures!!!

I'm pretty sure because it's the 30th anniversary of it's release. I'm kicking my self for not going last month.

I though Moving Pictures was the last tour?  FWIW, I saw the actual Moving Pictures tour, but they obv did not play the whole album...

I think this is the same tour but a second north American leg. I could be mistaken. Just got a boot from the Permanent Waves tour, St. Louis 1980, and it's fucking awesome, of course.

The Snakes & Arrows tour seemed to go on for two years, so what's to stop the Moving Pictures tour from doing the same thing.

Yes, the past couple tours they've done two legs.  A summer shed leg and then an arena leg.  Or at least that's how it's seemed.  I would think they'd be doing sheds now, though.  I saw then about a month ago in Hershey in the arena.

On a related note, here's a recent interview with Neil (which doesn't happen often).

Awesome! I go through phases every six months or so where Rush is all I listen to, which has been happening for 25 years. This thread is about to kick off another one.

Just went to go peep tickets for the Portland show in a couple of weeks.  Cheapest I could find was $65 which is not a big deal, but it is the same night as My Morning Jacket, which I already have a ticket for.  Oh well.  Hopefully they will come around again (I say that every year!)

They show snippets of this in the film but it's uncut on the extras as well as more live stuff and interviews.

i'm pretty sure the 1st time i ever puffed was @ a rush show actually.

That's funny....When I was 12 or 13 my brother took me and my buddy to Radio City for the Signals tour.  He kept going back a couple rows to puff and then would come back to our seats.  He thought he was being stealth but we knew what he was up to....lol...Saw two nights of that 5 night run, the first and the last.  It was amazing but we always had to miss the YYZ encore to make the train.  I saw saw two shows in 82 (Signals), two shows in 83 (more signals) and one in '84 (Grace Under Pressure).  I don;t think I went back until 2001 or 2002.  Brought my wife and she was one of like 5 girls in MSG, it was funny.....I might go this summer for olden times sake....Camera Eye is the tits for sure.  Wish I went to that Moving Pictures tour but I looked it up like the day after they were here  :|

There is some phone camera footage of the big screen from the ceremony on YouTube, but that's all I have seen. That being said, you can find footage of the induction speech by the Foos, the acceptance speech and at least two songs.

I really want to go to this, but the good seats are $150+ and I just spent $300 on good seats for Stevie Wonder and have about $600 or whatever tied up in Dead MO.

I think I'm gonna end up buying some lawn tickets as it gets closer.

Neil has Chronic Tendonitis, so while it probably won't be their last live performances, they're not planning on doing any lengthy touring after this one.

And honestly, some of his fills aren't quite what they used to be and I could see him being the kind of guy who would stop touring if his playing wasn't up to his own high standards.

I went last night.  So they're doing something pretty cool on this tour, where not only are they starting from the new material and slowly going back in time through the setlist, but they also have 3 or 4 slots in the setlist where they switch out different tunes on different nights.  Last night our songs were Between the Wheels, The Camera Eye, and Losing It (only 2nd time played live)!

That second set was unreal.

Well, it had to end ...

http://consequenceofsound.net/2015/12/rushs-neil-peart-says-hes-retired-from-music/

QuoteRush's Neil Peart says he's retired from music
"There comes a time to... take yourself out of the game"

Over the the summer, Rush embarked on their "R40 Tour" celebrating the 40th anniversary of drummer Neil Peart's membership in the band. At the time, bandmate Alex Lifeson said it would likely be the band's final full-scale tour together due to his psoriatic arthritis and Peart's chronic tendonitis. While Lifeson left the door open for future projects, including smaller tours and soundtrack work, he said the band's ultimate fate lays in the hands of music's greatest drummer.

If that's the case, it appears Rush is no more. In a new interview with Drumhead Magazine (via Jambase), Peart spoke frankly about his coming to terms with retirement. "... Lately Olivia has been introducing me to new friends at school as 'My dad– He's a retired drummer.' True to say–funny to hear. And it does not pain me to realize that, like all athletes, there comes a time to... take yourself out of the game. I would rather set it aside then face the predicament described in our song 'Losing It' ('Sadder still to watch it die, than never to have known it')."

Aside from aforementioned health issues, Peart previously mentioned his desire to spend more time with family. Following the tragic deaths of his daughter and first wife in the late '90s, Peart remarried in 2000. He and his wife had a daughter, Olivia, in 2009.

While I'm super excited for this, I'm also pretty pissed.  In order to get the Blu-Ray 5.1 remix, you have to get the entire super deluxe edition for $150?  I've been grabbing Steven Wilson remixes of Tull, Gentle Giant and Yes whenever he releases a new one and they've all been amazing, but none of them has been more than $25.  Kinda sucks.

Counterparts was the last one that got any regular rotation for me.  The rest I pretty much just know from what appeared in the setlists over the years.

That Snakes & Arrows tour was great! The South Park and Strange Brew intros were hilarious.

As for Joel's question, RTB was the last one I'd consider a favorite, but S&A is a good album, as Hans said.

Last one that got any play from me (or last one I bought) was Grace Under Pressure.  Saw a couple of shows on that tour.  Not too familiar with anything after that except for what's been on the live albums (Rush in Rio etc.).

I'm sort of with you... my first rock show was the Presto tour in 1990. I liked Presto at the time, but literally never listened to anything after that... basically, once I discovered Phish Rush was off my radar for a long time. I still love everything from the beginning through Moving Pictures.

Posted album review number 2112 (https://werksman.blogspot.com/2019/01/dercole-made-to-burn.html) on my blog just now. Had I realized that before, I would not have chosen such a crap album. Guess what I am spinning right now ...

I'm still bummed I never got off my ass to see them one last time.  My phone was on random last week and Rush in Rio came on.  I really love the mix on that one.  Sounds so sick.

A real nice deep dive into Limelight.  This guy does a lot of these videos with isolated tracks and discussing the music theory behind classic rock songs.  He pointed out a bunch of things I things I never noticed before despite having heard the song about 1000 times over the past 30 years.

QuoteThe drum kit played by Rush's Neil Peart between 1974-1977 is expected to fetch more than $100,000 (£75,000) at auction in the coming weeks.

Peart's iconic chrome Slingerland set, which he used for recordings and live performances, will go under the hammer between November 23 and December 9 as part of Bonhams' Music Memorabilia auction.

Bonhams expects the drum kit will sell for approximately $104,000 (£77,695) to $157,000 (£117,290).

The coveted kit features dual blue heads printed with Rush's logo and Neil Peart's name, as well as chrome-wrapped Tom-toms with an original head signed by Peart himself.

As the Bonhams listing explains, the kit was purchased by Peart in 1974 from Toronto's Long & McQuade music store shortly after he joined the iconic band.

Debating whether or not to go to the Primus A Tribute To Kings show next month. It's outdoors and pretty close to my house, and work (I can park for free for the show it's that close), so Delta shouldn't be hindering my decision, but it is since my wife would be going with me and she's not as good in crowds as I am right now.

QuoteOver 100 items will be sold in the Property From The Archives of Alex Lifeson event, set to take place on 20 to 22 May. They include 60 vintage guitars, alongside other musical gear, wardrobe and memorabilia once belonging to the Rush co-founder.
A major highlight of the event is Lifeson's 1976 "Whitey" Gibson ES-355TD electric guitar, heard on all of Rush's albums from 1977's A Farewell To Kings to 2015's R40. It's valued at a "conservative estimate" of $200,000 to $300,000.
"I purchased this guitar in 1976, it was custom-built in Kalamazoo just for me. It has been my main guitar and is the iconic Alex Lifeson guitar," said the 68-year-old guitarist in a statement.

If you haven't heard it yet, the 40th anniversary of Moving Pictures boxed set comes with a Live in YYZ show from that tour, which is fantastic (obviously).  One of the perks of a Spotify account is being able to listen to stuff like that without forking over $250 for the entire boxed set.

I am also a guitar player who also likes Rush who also thought that was awesome.  Thanks for sharing.  While he's not my favorite player, I don't think there's a guitar player out there who writes more interesting rhythm guitar than Alex.  So much fun to play.

Yeah, in the parlance of today's youth, I found his tone a little "suss".  Crazy with all those stacks of amps he has in there but whatever.  I was impressed he could still break down that solo as in depth as he did and play it pretty flawlessly.  Was interesting to note that a lot of those solos were patched together by Geddy and Terry from bits and pieces.
