Diana Inch is a 44-year old high school librarian and girls soccer coach in Oregon. She is also the only person out of 3 million entrants in the Yahoo! Tourney Pick 'Em to correctly predict the Final Four teams. She also correctly predicted Connecticut and Butler in the Championship game, and sure enough she had the Huskies winning the title. So how did this seemingly extraordinary sports genius make her predictions? By using her favorite numbers and picking dogs and cats, of course.
Inch's formula included her favorite numbers and team mascots. She titled her entry Di's 711 XV Cats & Dogs. In the first round she picked the No. 7 and 11 seeds in almost every round. In ensuing rounds she picked according to team mascots, leaning to those with cats or dogs.
"I have watched the games on my computer," Inch said. "I'm as surprised as anyone that I got the Final Four." (Via the Albany Democrat-Herald)
Why are you surprised, Diana? This is how it always happens. You should try fantasy football next year and draft your team based on which player has the cutest ass.
Unfortunately for Diana, though, her luck has brought her no instant wealth, and just some bragging rights. Even before UConn won the (incredibly boring) championship game last night, Diana was in 781st place in the Yahoo! competition, 13 wins behind the first place entrant, so she won't see any of the $5,000 top prize. But with that cushy high school librarian/soccer coach salary, she hardly needs it.
Bump! It all starts today!

Woah go look at ESPN's poll on who will win the game tonight. The only states in the country to pick Michigan to win are: Michigan, Illinois, South Dakota, Minnesota, Indiana, Wisconsin & Iowa.
Fun second half (I didn't watch much of the first). Happy that Louisville won, I guess, as I'm not much of a Michigan fan.

I don't understand this play-in -- excuse me, "first four" -- nonsense. Only in two of the regions was the matchup against two 16 seeds. Elsewhere it was 11s and 12s. Explain to me why 11th-seeded Tennessee had to play an extra game while five lower-seeded teams in their region got to kick back.

I agree it's stupid, if it's preventing the NCAA from expanding the field to 96 teams I'll allow it.
OK, I looked it up.
From Wikipedia:
QuoteFirst held during 2011, the First Four are games between the lowest four at-large teams and the lowest four automatic bid (conference champion) teams. They are not necessarily the lowest eight teams in the field; the lowest four at-large teams may have higher rankings among the entire field of 68 than several of the automatic bid teams coming from the smaller conferences.
To me this is bullshit. It's completely arbitrary. What's the point of having seedings if you're going to give a higher-seeded team a harder path through the tournament than a lower-seeded one? They're saying "we think you're good enough to be an 11 seed, buuuuut first you're going to have to work harder than the other 11s." Further, in order to match up teams with identical seeds that also meet the above criteria, odds are at least one of the teams was seeded arbitrarily to begin with.
Also, according to Google's predictive search, when someone types "how does the first" (as in "how does the first four work"), a plurality of those people wind up asking "how does the first time feel." :hereitisyousentimentalbastard

I'm pretty sure that's what JJ looked like during the Michael Jackson 2001 at Camden.
:hereitisyousentimentalbastard
I actually just started up that 2001 while watchin this gif and it goes perfectly.
VCU just F'd me!
man those refs fucked nebraska with no lube today.
cant remember exact #s but it was something like 48- 17 fouls called.
and to top it off a couple completely indiscriminate techs on a couch that i dont think has ever gotten a tech in his career.
the 2nd one ejected hium b/c he was tryin to signal the refs that the shot clock wasnt on. :frustrated:
complete and utter bullshit that game. total disgrace.
--dont think it was coincedence that the next game with Creigton (the other Neb team) they barely called a single foul.
oh well, time for the laddies to get some revenge.

Heh. Just saw. My bracket is officially done!
Well, you probably don't feel as bad about the Syracuse loss as this guy.

No more perfect brackets as Dayton ends Brad Binder's magnificent run
A day after emerging as the one person in America with a perfect bracket through two rounds of the NCAA tournament, Brad Binder became a pseudo-celebrity across social media.
He gained thousands of new followers on Twitter, received invites to appear on network television and was asked his advice on "the secrets of life."
And who wouldn't want his advice? Millions filled out brackets and entered challenges – on Yahoo Sports, on ESPN, on CBS Sports – but only Binder's entry in Yahoo Sports Tourney Pick 'em went 32-for-32 through the Round of 64..
"It's crazy!" he told Yahoo Sports late Friday night. "Still can't believe it!"
The 15 minutes of fame for the 23-year-old from Buffalo Grove, Ill., continued Saturday as his perfect bracket rolled on.
Florida won. 33-for-33.
Louisville won. 34-for-34.
Michigan won. 35-for-35.
San Diego State? Yeah, they won, too. 36-for-36.
And then ... Dayton, an 11 seed, beating Syracuse, the former No. 1 team in the country, 55-53. It seemed like a lock until it wasn't.
Syracuse had a shot to take the lead with under 10 seconds to play, but missed a jumper, then another 3-pointer at the buzzer that hit the back of the rim and out.
And just like that, no perfect brackets remained.
Brad's perfect run is over, but before we say goodbye, stand up and take a bow. You deserve it.
I didn't go crazy with predicting many 1st round upsets, but at least I picked Kentucky to beat Wichita State.
anyone who didn't pick that game knows nothing about anything.
buncha 3.0 noobs.
well at least Creighton can get UNL some revenge vs Baylor in th 2nd round.
cornhusker state never forrgets TEZZAS! we comin for u :samurai:
Creepin up the leader board... watch your back, jimbo.
My bracket is totally done, so I'm just rooting for the upset. GO DAYTON!

Looks like your hopes all come down to Louisville making the final and losing to Florida since we have the exact same bracket other than that. Except that I have 2 extra sweet 16 teams so if Iowa St and Michigan both win you are effectively out.
Also,

Come on, Louisville!
Looks like you're out of it, VDB.
If MSU make the final, mehead wins.
And, amazingly, lope is still in it: if UConn AND Michigan are in the final, he somehow squeaks out a win.
Any other scenario and I win.
UCONN!
What a game. And MSG was at LEAST 2/3 full of MSU fans. Crazy day.
Did you say hey to Katie Holmes? They kept showing her on TV.
Nah, we were up on the bridge. Which is freakin' cool. Reminded me of the Green Monster seats at Fenway.
It's not a billion, but this guy's oversight end up costing him $100k. Ouch.

Poor Schmo Forgets To Pick Bracket Winner, Costs Himself Shot At $100K
This is the worst bracket ever filled out. Which is to say it's an excellent bracket. Corey nailed 11 of the Sweet 16 teams, seven of the Elite Eight, three of the Final Four, and has a UConn-Kentucky championship game. Except Corey forgot to pick a winner. [Update: We talked to Corey (http://deadspin.com/we-found-the-poor-guy-whose-bracket-mistake-could-cost-1560316647).]
Corey currently sits tied for fourth in Yahoo's billion-dollar bracket challenge group. That billion is long gone, but the creators of the 20 highest-scoring brackets each receive $100,000. If Corey correctly picked the winner for tonight's tournament final, he'd be in the money. But Corey didn't correctly pick the winner, because he didn't pick any winner, and his bracket is long locked. There will be no money for Corey, because no matter who wins, he'll be leapfrogged by more than 20 people who did select a champion.
Corey's bracket is named "Corey's Champion Bracket."
Corey, wherever you are, you have our sympathies.

North Carolina fan petitions NCAA to overturn Villanova win
CHAPEL HILL, N.C., April 7 (UPI) -- North Carolina's basketball program took a viscous knockout Monday, but it isn't the only party feeling woozy.
Even the school mascot was punched to the ground after the national championship loss to Villanova.
And fans want answers. But one supporter is taking extraordinary steps, making a petition for the NCAA to overturn the ruling of the 77-74 Wildcats' win.
"This game was poorly officiated from the tip off to the end," wrote Michael Kline, on Change.org. "It was a one sided called game all the way through. The officials called fouls against UNC that should have not been called and never called Villanova for the fouls they committed. The officials never called Villanova for multiple travel violations either. Also I want a complete investigation into the officials as it was them that decided the game not who played better."
The petition has 648 signatures, with a goal of 1,000.
Kline's letter on the site reads as follows: "I want the UNC/Villanova NCAA Championship game overturned due to oblivious poor officiating throughout the whole game. Thee officials should be fired and put under investigation."
The petition also has several comments from a poster with the screen name "Tyler Hansbrough," from Pleasant Hill, NC.
Hansbrough, 30, was selected No. 13 in the 2009 NBA Draft by the Indiana Pacers after 20.2 points and 8.6 assists per game in four years at North Carolina.
Villanova's Kris Jenkins hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer for the second championship in the school's history.
