I'm most disappointed that they strayed from the Halloween tradition.

This is what this band does on Halloween.  I would like to see them provide a cover set sometime this weekend.  Regardless of how it sounds, I'd be disappointed if I were in attendance and this occurred.

I am very interested to download this today and give it a listen.

Post show threads are always bummers these days. I should just ignore them.

You had to expect people to be disappointed, no?

It's like going to Thanksgiving dinner and getting Haggis instead of Turkey.

If you read the Phishbill essay from the band, even they are admitting that the songs aren't really done.

So basically the second set was watching them practice.

I think that's pretty cool, but given the anticipation and tradition that surrounds Halloween it probably would have been a better idea to have done that on a different night.

But, I don't think our fans do happily lap it up, I think they go online and talk about how it was a bad show.

I don't really agree with that. I would not be upset by this turn of events if I had been at the show. Frankly, it's about time for some new Phish music. I know the text I got from BM was positive.

This move by this band at this time was pure balls. It was risky. It took a lot of work. AND it was clearly really important for them to do this. I am mostly shocked that this info was NEVER leaked. Think about how many people had to know what they were going to do. I can't believe how surprising it was.

I have not listened - I will this morning. But I am definitely not pissed that they did this. I am proud of 'em. Honestly.

This guy gets it.  If you're gonna serve Haggis, put it on the invite.

I was disappointed for about 20 mins after the announcement that they weren't doing a cover, then I turned to my wife and said:

"That's why you never trust a prankster"

RJ expressed the same conclusion in the LST:

as far as how much practice it takes to learn a cover album, they decided to do DSOTM the day of the show, so...

To some degree it depends upon the album.

imo it takes more work to do your own new stuff

I think it was a cool idea, but I get those who were dissapointed.

as RJ said, expectations are a bitch
"toss away stuff you don't need in the end
but keep what's important, and know who's your friend"
"It's a 106 miles to Chicago. We got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses."

I think it was a cool idea, but im with scott on this one. Pretty disappointed.
It does show they are focusing more on phish though and not just some halloween tradition (even though I would have rather had them keep up with this tradition than play new phish material).
havent listened to a note of the new stuff yet, gonna get to that today at work.

Ghost > carini looks hot clockin it at like 31-32 min. tonight and saturday are gonna be smokin

1rst halloween show with 0 covers in the whole thing? forgot about quinn

Interesting perspectives here. They're all valid.

I was initially disappointed when I saw the Phishbill. Similar complaints: letting people down; a break from tradition; making people pay to watch you practice; it's not even a real album yet etc. Also, 12 songs? That leaves no time for jamz!

Please tell me the Woo-X ad was actually in the Phishbill and not inserted by whomever uploaded that file. Hilarious!

Concert aside, we have to be encouraged by what the Phishbill said about the development of these songs. Inclusive, whole-band jamming and writing sessions -- sounds like the stuff that birthed a lot of the Billy Breathes and SOTG material, no? Also, could the fact that they spent a month or however long deliberately jamming together before Hampton help explain the high quality of improv we've seen this tour?

I'm just now listening to the second set, so we'll see how this goes.
Is this still Wombat?

Excellent summation from the Timer.
http://www.relix.com/reviews/detail/phish_at_boardwalk_hall

QuoteThis concert seemed to tell a narrative. The first set acted out the problem.Without new material or new styles of playing, the entire Phish experience could get stale. The second set pointed the way to a new path. It wasn't just that there were novel songs, but the entire method of creating the material was different.Just as Hegel predicted, whenever there is thesis and antithesis, we can wind up with synthesis. The final set pointed to what could be the final result of Wingsuit. The energy from that creative process can infuse older material with newfound energy.

Cool idea? Yes. Ballsy move? Yes. Would I have been pissed if I were there? Probably, but then I would have enjoyed the hell out of the show, if for nothing else than the third set. Is this a game changer for 3.0? Possibly. As others have mentioned, it was probably hell to keep this material under wraps for the last several months.

It's going to make the NYE shows pretty interesting.

You're entitled to your opinion but I'm going to laugh at it.
