What do people think about these:

I haven't looked into another hard drive for a while and was pretty suprised by how cheap a TB is...I get the "too many eggs in one basket" feeling...and I've never heard of Fantom Drives...anyone have any experience?

Can't say I've used them, but I've had great success with this:
http://www.buy.com/prod/lacie-500gb-usb-2-0-external-hard-drive-designed-by-f-a-porsche-301103u/q/loc/101/202883565.html

Sign up for Google checkout and get $10 off and with free shipping you can get two 500gb drives for less than that 1TB drive.

The $10 Google checkout thing at buy.com is a no brainer. They say it's only for first time buyers, but all you have to do is use a different e-mail address each time and you can keep getting $10 off.

the only external I ever owned was a Fantom and it consistently lost my files.  I'd advise against that particular brand.

I just bought this Fantom 1 TB drive:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822204068
(got delivered today).

It's a western digital HD in there, which is a good brand of HD.
obviously, I don't have much experience with this drive, as I only plugged it in 20 minutes ago.
but I'm hoping it'll work out well, based on the many positive reviews at newegg.com.

I thought Western Digital was a brand.  I've def. heard good things about them.  maybe mine was an exeption...

::realizes I actually have no idea what I'm talking about ::

don't know much about Fantom Drives.  i'm sure they are just the builders of the assembly, the HD inside is likely WD/Hitachi/Maxtor/etc..

exactly.  Fantom Drives just builds the enclosure, and buys the actual hard drive from Western Digital.

maybe i should read up a few more posts before replying ;)

i've had decent experiences with WD over the years - they used to be very reliable, but i have known a few failures... if buying from WD direct, you get a 5 yr warranty - Fantom is only giving 1 yr, which is not enough IMO.  hard drives do fail eventually.
