Should we make this a blank DVD/CDR bargain thread?

Best Buy has 50 packs of Fuji DVD-R/+R $19.99 and 100 packs of Fuji DVD-R/+R for $39.99.  That is the up front price after instant rebates, and there are no mail-in rebates.

Those are real good deals, on a great DVD brand.

In my area, the 50-packs of Fuji at BB are TY but the 100s are not.  Check your labels before you buy.

Some are...some aren't.  Depends on if you get a pos out of the box.  I have a 250GB and been using it for about the last year or so.  Never had a bit of trouble out of it.  My experience with Maxtor is that the drives are hit and miss.  They either break quick or don't break at all.

This 250 that i'm using now was in my computer for about 6 months before I stored anything on it that I couldn't afford to lose.  Keyword: Backup :-D
Title: Re: 500GB HDD for 195$ @ Buy.com!!!
Post by: tet on October 23, 2006, 12:44:16 PM
yes, but it's hard to keep a valid backup of nearly a terabyte of data, which is what i'm up to for my computer.  Maxtor warranties are only 1 year, whereas WD or Hitachi/IBM are at least 3-5 years.  I'd rather pay more for that peace of mind - and i've had to have 2 HDs replaced from each of those companies about 3 or 4 years after purchasing them, without any hassle whatsoever.  a bad Maxtor after 13 months of use is a paperweight.

I only buy Seagate HDs - they have a 7 year warranty, I've replaced several with them too, it's quite easy.

Does that 1TB change every day?  I've got exactly 225 DVD+R's filled with shows.  If you're editing 1TB a day, I'd like to know what you're doing.  You must be VERY busy! :-D

no, my 1 TB is relatively static - it's finding time to burn the 200 DVDs that i have a problem with.  i'm more inclined to backup to HDs these days to be honest with you...

i've seen 25 packs of Memorex for $30 or so at CompUSA/Staples/OfficeDepot lately.  price fluctuates, but i like the quality of them.  i'm sure there are better deals online though, i just haven't checked in a while since i don't burn much DL.

The 1TB drives are out! Not exactly a bargain, but still, it's pretty sweet:

Also, found this deal on Dual Layer DVDs. A 25-pack for $33 with free shipping. Like Tet, above, I've had real good luck with the Memorex discs in my burner. I'll use them instead of DVD5's when I can find 'em cheap enough since I'll have to worry about half as many physical discs in the archive...

Seemed like a good place to share this:
woot.com is doing a woot-off today.
instead of their regular, one-product per day thing, they are selling small quantities of products until the sell out and then they throw out another product.

Right now it's a 1gb SanDisk mp3 player for $12.99.

i grabbed the 2-way radios they had at like 1:15am, just $15 and we send them to clients with families.  this is a 50% savings over what we normally pay for each pair of Moto radios (that are probably better anyway), so i bought 3.  (+1 K from our accountant!)

So, I'm guessing the battery life is pretty good then?  10-12 hours a day is some heavy usage.  This is a bit nit-picky, but I am getting tired of running with my 60 gig video ipod on my arm.  This little guy may be just what the doctor ordered!

I usually got almost 2 full days of mowing in on one AAA.  I could have got more time in but I did two things to drain battery life:

1.  I bumped up the amount of time until auto shut off so that if I was in the middle of a good jam, and I had to travel to another lawn, I wouldn't have to start from the beginning (and my time was set to 20min).

2.  Even though I had noise canceling headphones, I still had to pump up the volume a little bit.

Interesting...

I am still not sold on these MP3 players... But I do feel an iPod is not the best buy, they just have an unbelievable marketing team there at Apple.

Interesting...

I know this is a few weeks back, but yeah.  You basically have to send more current to the phones (which means more power) and the headphone amplifier draws more power from the battery to amplify the signal more.

If anyones running out of room again and looking for a new external hard drive enclosure check out the Apricorn EZ-DT-KIT.  I love these things!  Just bought another one and dropped a 500 gig IDE Seagate Barracuda into it.

It's a solid aluminum enclose with a plastic front. Fan.  USB 2.0.  It can take up to a 750 Gig.  PATA IDE

They also make a version for SATA drives and one with USB and Firewire.

I buy them from newegg.  $44.99 minus $20.00 mail in rebate =  $24.99

That's where I get mine mingus...

I may think of getting a SATA enclosure, because I want to replace an internal 160G drive with a 500G but I'd still like to use the 160.  In the future, I want the external to connect to the SATA bus instead of through FW, but for now, that ain't a bad idea.  So it'll be under $200 to get 500G internal and box up the 160G external.  Now to convince TPTB.

If you're in the market for the new 32 gig IPOD TOUCH, why not get it for $5 less than the apple store is selling it for AND get a 1 gig shuffle thrown in for free?  All from Amazon.com

http://www.tuaw.com/2008/02/25/amazon-offers-up-two-ipods-for-the-price-of-one/

Amazon offers up two iPods for the price of one
Posted Feb 25th 2008 9:00PM by Cory Bohon

Amazon has started selling the iPod touch 32GB model. You might be asking, "What's so special about that?" Well, if you read the page carefully, you will notice that Amazon also is offering up a free iPod shuffle with the purchase of an iPod touch 32GB. That's right, you get a free 1GB iPod shuffle when you purchase an iPod touch.

The ad reads: "You qualify for a free 1 GB iPod shuffle with the purchase of this 32 GB iPod touch from Amazon.com. Eligible 1 GB shuffles include the blue, green, silver, and purple. Just add both items to your cart and you will not be charged for the shuffle."

As you may recall, Apple lowered the price of the iPod shuffle to $49 last week. Amazon is currently selling the 32GB iPod touch for $494 while Apple is selling the same thing for $499 -- seems that Amazon is wanting your business. I get the sunday paper every week, or at least my wife does. There always seems to be some decent media (CDR or DVD) that is around $15 for 50 dvd's/100 cd's at Best Buy/Officemax/Office Depot. Not sure why I buy CD's anymore, guess I need something to give away

Do you guys that burn shows onto CDs buy jewel cases to store them in?  If so, where do you get them from?  I ordered a ton of 2CD jewel case trays over a year ago.  They came unassembled (which I prefer) and were relatively cheap, but I have no idea where I got them from and thought I'd check here and see what you guys use as I'm starting to run low.

shop4tech.com has some good deals. I buy the slim double vcd cases, they are great for storage. You can fit 3 discs in them and they have an artwork sleeve like a dvd case, and they are made of a softer plastic, no cracks from shipping!!!!

That actually looks a pretty viable option.  Is the spine it too thin where if you put artwork in the outer jacket you can't read what show it is if you're looking at a bunch of CDs in a CD rack?

The spine is the perfect size to have your stuff easily legible. I get some regular 8.5 x 11 paper cut down to by 9.875 x 4.625 (I work in the printing industry so this is done easily) and print what I want on there and they slide rite in no cutting required. I will try and attach a pdf of my own layouts that I use with these. If this doesn't work I can e-mail you the pdf so you can see for yourself what they look like, just pm me with your addy.

If you can get a TB drive for a little over $200, wouldn't it be better to go that way?

Unless you want the small portable device.  But if you wait, price will drop or capacity will increase.

Not really a deal but the prices have been dropping for TB drives.  I just got an internal 1TB for about 180 (not 100% because I got it or my bday, but when I was looking it up, that's what it is on amazon).  I got the seagate.  Anyhow, early this year when I was first looking they were about 240-260.  Considering a 500 is around 90, it's an even increase.

Now it's time to look at 2TB drives.  Once they get under 300, it's buy time.

Harman Kardon Drive + Play in Vehicle iPod interface control system - DP1US - Audio portion works with any iPod featuring an iPod dock

List Price:  See Details $149.99
You Save:  $132.00  :-o

Our Price:  $17.99
Shipping:   FREE

Audio portion works with any iPod featuring an iPod dock connector. Charges all iPods except 4G Nano, 3G iPhone, 2G touch and 120GB Classic.

Harman Kardon's Drive + Play is more than just an iPod adapter — it's a complete digital music control system for your car. In fact, the Drive + Play handles the iPod so well that it was given an Innovations Award at the 2006 Consumer Electronics Show.
Consider the system's backlit LCD display, which mounts up high on the dash for easy visibility while driving. And since it matches the display on your iPod — with the same menu style and general layout — you already know how easy it is to jump between songs and artists.

But the Drive + Play system is all about control, and its Text Commander Controller handles file navigation with ease and elegance. Shaped like an oversized mushroom, this remote mount command center works just like the click wheel on your iPod — just press the outer buttons to play, pause, fast-forward, or reverse, and twist the knob to scroll through the menus. Install it on your center console for a handy, easy-to-reach controller.

While your iPod is connected to the system, you'll be able to control every aspect of playback — from track selection to playlists. And best of all, the Drive + Play will charge your iPod battery while it's in use.

The central "brain" unit can be mounted out of the way in the glove box or under a seat, and a built-in wireless FM transmitter lets you play the iPod through your vehicle's FM radio. If your stereo has an auxiliary input, you can connect the Drive + Play's audio output to it for the best possible sound performance. The Drive + Play also offers a pass-through auxiliary input for connecting an additional component to your stereo system.

With the prices of hard drives lately you can easily buy two (one for back up) and still beat out DVDs when the cost is factored per gig. Plus you don't have to worry about bad burns or scratches or a million other pains in the.........

Western Digital. I have 30 externals, all different types and sizes and have never had one fail (actually I had one problem but it was caused when I kicked over the drive, I was however able to recover all data). I started buying drives around five years ago. WD have many different types, I tend to buy the cheapest. Now they have these mini-passport drives that are USB powered with your PC or whatever source you are plugging them into. They have them in 1TB size, they are cheap, portable (not needing power outlet) and ridiculously small. See my post above for photos....

I have four 1TB mybooks, one 500 GB mybook, and two passports.  They treat me well.

My last bunch have been seagate without any issues.  I have all internals though.  There was this 500G external seagate that was always on sale about a year ago and a bunch of people got them.  I think they're good.

I have two WD's as well. 500 and a 320. Absolutely love 'em. I like them waaay more than my Seagate.

tipetoo, I've never had a WD, but a lot of people swear by them.  I suppose I don't want to fix what ain't broken and the Seagate has always worked well.  Not that it's the defining factor, but in the same price range, the seagates were 7200RPM and the WDs were 5400.  I know from the specs that the performance is based on other factors, but I was always for a faster drive for some reason.

I already have two of these drives (both the 1.5TB variety), and they've been great drives for me.  I almost bought another one at this price, but I'm going to hold off until I really need it.

This tour has forced me to add to my HD storage space. Not to sound all spammy but here's a public service announcement for those in the same boat.

PSA: Tiger Direct has 1T Seagate Internal HD's for $39.99 after rebate. But you can only order 1.  I think the sale runs through June 18th.

I just bought 2Tb, 1 Seagate for 39.99 and 1 Hitachi for 69.99.

If others find better deals after 18th please post.

i've had a few seagate drives fail after about a year...the last one i bought, (knowing it would fail) i got because it was wicked cheap, i needed the space bad, and they had it local.  within a year, it's health dropped to 62%.  that's just storage, not running any OS, and internal.  i put in a WD about a month after installing the seagate, and it's health is still at 100%.  the seagate runs a few degrees cooler, but who cares if they fail prematurely.

with the exception of that ^^ one, i only buy WD's now, been that way for years.  if you do buy a WD green drive and plan on using it for mounting your OS you will see some performance drop speedwise.  if you're just using it for storage of tunes and movies, its awesome.

here's a small app to monitor your hdd health, been using it for awhile, it gives you the basics.

I just got a 2TB seagate even though my 1TB just failed (about a year)  Like you MeltMe...  wicked cheap.  I have a second 1TB seagate that's 3-4 years old and that's what I've typically experienced with their drives.  Shit happens...  With proper backup, the Seagate may require a little more maintenance (like buying and replacing bad drives), but should work just as well...  I'm not saying that the Seagate is good or anything, but NO HD mfr is 0 defect.

I have some maxtors, an IBM, a few seagates that have all been good for a real long time...  I think I've had at least one of each that's failed at some point as well.  I know I had a deskstar (at least one) too but not for a long time.  I think drives are a bit of a shot in the dark sometimes.  If you keep them away from their limits, and especially if you can shut them down once in a while, any drive should last quite a while.  Infant mortality rate is more attributed to the manufacturer not burning in their product well enough.  They could write and read the entire disk and check for errors but obviously we wouldn't be getting the deals we do now.  I suppose the answer is a proper RAID system where any disk lost can be replaced on the fly and no data lost.  So buy a few of these - and as Aug mentioned, the deal on WD 2TBs at Staples today and tomorrow.

I bought mine used for I think $225, with two 500GB drives. They are crazy expensive new, but so worth it to A) have piece of mind and B) have all my music on "one" drive. Drove me batty having my music spread across 3-4 external hard drives.

I'm not broke as hell (for once) But I just bought a 2tb Hard Drive and can't justify buying another one right away. The extra money is kept under my balls in Dagny's purse.

I just found this and it works! but it expires on sunday @ midnight..

HTC Thunderbolt on Verizon for new contracts and upgrades....only $125!!!  verizon online was offering it for $199 with new contract or extension.

http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?t=2835451

you get $50 instantly off from wirefly and $25 cash back from fat wallet with an account, I just signed up.   the $75 off pays for the insurance on the phone for a year.  I've been checking out different android phones online for about a week and played in the verizon store tonight.  that thunderbolt is sweet, I can't wait to chuck my Crapberry.  I've got a curve 8830, the one with the roller ball...that ball is useless if it gets any sort of grease on it... I'll end this crapberry rant before it starts.

I hadn't done that math to realize that it is actually still cheaper to burn to dvd's rather than buying HDs. But I like HDs, they take up less space and are easier to navigate than spindles and books and boxes of dvds.

yeah, but dvds can't have mechanical failure.  And losing 3 TB vs 4.4 GB is steep.

if DVDs are stored, they don't get scratched.  it's the CRC errors that get me.

with so many deals, I have more unused hard drives than I'd like to admit.  they'll be used soon though.

The only problem is when an HD crashes, you lose a lot more than 4 Gb.

with that, you are still safe.

I have around 30 HD and have only had one crash, after I hooked its power cord around my foot and it lept off a desk. Some of my drives are 6 years old and still work fine. Maybe I'm just lucky, but regardless, I will never burn another disc in my life.

I don't know how to do the siren gif

I know most people don't like seagates in here (I've had great luck with them personally) but this is a nice deal on a 4 TB internal drive.  nice price to build a RAID with too

Looks like Amazon is getting in on the black friday sales.  Up to 50% off on some home audio equipment and up to 40% off of some headphones.

It's not your normal storage device, but I got one... and it's super rad!! Makes any wi-fi enabled device have 200GB of extra storage!

It emits it's own little hot spot (will last like 5-6 hours or more), you connect with your phone, tablet or whatever else and you can stream mp3 straight from it! It also can stream video and pictures etc, but I don't really bother with any of that noise.  I use an old iPhone 5s (was 16GB, is now 216GB) for an ipod. The sandisk app for the device is available for both android and ios too.  The only problem is the app is slightly buggy depending on your version of iOS or android.

Not to mention its a 200GB flash drive for less than $80. I was skeptical at first, but I absolutely love this thing!

Besides a slightly buggy app, the only other problem I have with it is not compatible with lossless files, but for me it's no big deal cause it's my "on the go" storage device.
