curious if anyone undertstands how these things work.
MY internet provider just called and told us they increased our speeds by double for free.
Does anyone know if that should directly correlate to double wi fi speeds? does a router or maybe the device's distance from a router have any sort of cap?
The speed that your internet provider gives you to the outside internet world is independent of your wifi speed. In general, you want your wifi to be capable of speeds greater than the connection speed to the outside world. As long as your wifi speed is great than your connection speed, you won't be limited by your wifi. If your wifi speed is slower than your internet connection speed, you'll be limited to the speed of the wifi.
... to clarify, my hardwired speeds got bumped from 60 up to 100 dl.
Yet before and after the bump my ps4 wifi is around 30.
so what is limiting the wi fi? my ps4 or the router?
PS- i know ps4s have notriously bad wifi capability, but i wasn't sure if that was the determing factor.
If you are on a cable-modem for your internet, keep in mind that their pipeline speeds are generally "Shared" between neighbors. So if the kid next door is torrenting 50 movies and streaming porn, he might be hogging the bandwidth. Or maybe you're that kid!
How old is your wifi router? Ancient ones (802.11 G) can't deal with current speeds/bandwidth.
How old is your wireless card in your computer - same deal.
That ties to Jasonsobel's comment, to determine where a bottleneck might be.

its the only thing i really have hooked up anymore since my laptop died.
re: keller - the modem/router are brand new. when we got struck by lightning my old router fried so when spectrum came we just had them install the all in one modem/router thing the cable company does.
i'm honestly guessing its the ps4 b/c like i said they are notorious for bad wifi.
ETA- the more i searched into it i'm 99% sure it s the ps4. PRetty much a common issue... no biggie, it doesnt really effect anything i do. I was just curious.
