Thanks for the sticky.

This project is designed to go hand in hand with the Grateful Dead Listening Guide
( www.deadlistening.com ).

The Grateful Dead Listening Guide is designed primarily to enrich the listening
experience of new and seasoned fans vis-a-vis the exploration of audience recordings.
Although soundboard sources are at times featured on the Grateful Dead Listening Guide,
this project's main goal will be to explore the audience sources suggested
in the guide. While different sources are appreciated by different people for
different reasons, this project will focus on the particular sources suggested in
the Grateful Dead Listening Guide along with a link to the guide's review of that
show/source. Most of the audience sources suggested in the guide are also available
at the Live Music Archive. This project's main aim will be to also spread these
sources via bittorrent to increase awareness to those who may be intimidated by
the amount of resources available at the Live Music Archive. This project is done
with thanks to the Grateful Dead Listening Guide and for your listening pleasure.

Amick put fade out/ins between most every song on his reel,
leaving small dead air spaces between songs. These spaces were
edited out in Sound Forge to provide a more smooth transition
from track to track. Also worth mentioning is that Amick "dropped
out" many years ago, to Hawaii apparently, and his masters and
reels have vanished with him for the time being.

Analog to Digital Transfer: 1/2 track tapes on a
Revox A-700 (tweaked the head azimuth to match the original
recording). Signal fed into DigiDesign Pro Tools on a
Macintosh with Audio Media III sound card. The only post
processing was normalization.

Final digital version assembled by: Noah Weiner - noahbw@home.com

note: Weinberg recorded each set of this show on its own
reel. Both were in very delicate condition at the time
of the transfer (Summer 2001). The set two reel was
degraded so much in sound quality (a tremendous loss of
high end frequencies) that it proved better to used an older
cassette copy of the set two reel for this new distribution.
Also, Sing Me Back Home, Sugar Magnolia, and Casey Jones
had been recorded over on the master reel at some point
prior to the Summer 2001 digital transfer. Evidence of the
current state of the set two reel can be heard on the set two
intro, the first 23 seconds of Bertha, and the set two outro,
which do come from the master reel.

Also, the track list for set one differs from what prior
record keeping indicated. However, this new track order is
direct off the master reel. The old order seems to indicate
that songs were possibly rearranged to fit them more
comfortably onto cassette.

Technical Notes (from shnid=26975):
The original audience master cassettes (4 Ampex C361-90) were recorded
on a Sony TC124 with unknown dynamic mics, spread approx. 25-30 ft.
across the balcony, by Ken & Judy Lee,. The cassette tape was baked
and re-shelled, then transfered via Tascam 122 MK-III > Lucid ADA1000 >
Tascam DA30-II (DAT) > Tascam CDRW 700 (CDR) by John Jay Hance. Editing
by Peter G. via Soundforge. No noise reduction was applied. Audio
extraction and further editing via Peak 4.0, compressed to .shn with xACT
1.3, and seeded by BoldCaptain via Azureus 2.1. Tape flutter in Baby Blue,
and in Truckin'. Tape flip in Dancin' In The Streets was was seemlessly
pieced together.

"Editing and CD mastering by the Chief Wizard - Michael@looncove.com
All editing done on a Dell Optiplex GX300 - PIII(800) using Diamond Cut Millennium. When I recieved this DAT, it was mono left channel with some Led Zep that Steve had taped bleeding into the RC for the last third of the tape. I converted this to mono to get rid of the right channel bleed and converted to mono two channel to keep
the cd players happy. This is the "Original" that I mastered to CD.
Then I addressed the speed change in Hurts Me Too by building a speed adjustment curve that approximated the battery death and tape slowdown. It is a fair fit but not perfect as there were fluctuations in the death that are impossible to duplicate. The result is very listenable. The bit of Cryptical on the end was
corrected with a straight line adjustment but it was pretty far gone...
Next, I used a very narrow notch filter around 3055 hz to remove an annoying whine. Then I used a light Continuous Noise filter to reduce some of the hiss from
the Uher.
Assorted other gliches and problems were corrected to produce what I feel is the most listenable and complete version of this historic show yet.

3. Here are the comments in deadlists about this show:

"COMMENTS The master tape is incomplete, as the tapers' batteries were low. David Gans played the timed portion on KPFA, minus the That's It For The Other One suite which was recorded, but damaged by the battery problem. DeadBase XI reports that the taper remembers that the closer was Dancing In The Streets. It is possible that additional songs were played between the second Cryptical and Dancin'. There is a new circulating copy of 3/3/68 on CDR that is Steve Brown's Uher MAR>DAT>WAV>CDR, has the complete version of It Hurts Me Too, and the beginning of Cryptical Envelopment before the batteries finally do die. It Hurts Me Too & Cryptical Envelopment// were speed-corrected via DAL Card Delux.

Larry, an eyewitness writes: "i remember getting off the bus on haight street That spring day, pushing my way through the crowds to see what all the excitement was about (i didn't know- did anyone? -that the dead were parking a flat bed truck across haight street to play a free gig!) ...completely by accident, i got there (well, within a few hundred feet) just as they fired up the music...the bus came by and i was splattered like a bug on the windshield!!! .....the version of "dancing in the streets" (which, unfortunately, isn't on the tape) was not the "disco" version they came up with later, but a much stronger r&b/rocking tune....i never forgot that set....and, though mickey had been with the band for a while, it was news to me, since this was my first time seeing them (only one drummer on that first, imo, great album!"

Finishing it up right now, on the NFA....good show. I have listened to the Winterland stand later in the week a bunch (mostly 6/7 and 6/9) but had not heard this. I really like a lot of the first set, esp. Jack Straw and Candyman, and Peggy-O. The second set shines too. Great recording. Thanks Nab. k+
