Show Notes: Ginseng Sullivan and Nellie Kane were performed acoustic and without microphones. Sweet Adeline was also performed without microphones. This version of Stash ranks among the favorites of many fans. Weekapaug and Hood included "I Love Lucy" theme teasing.


The only circulating source(NAK 300 Omnis>D-7>DAT) has this to say about it in the db:

I just listened to this show and I noticed a few things:
first the digi-noise in Halley's goes on about 35 seconds into the track. Also there is a drop out 4:20 into Halley's. The levels then come back up to a lower level than they were at initially after a few seconds. Can anybody else verify this? My md5s match the ones posted here. Other than that, it's a fat show, killer Stash.

Yes the dropout in Halley's continues for about 35 or 40 seconds. The levels do seem to fluxuate as well.

It would sound nice if the transfer was done properly.All of the recordings/transfers dome by this person sound fuzzy. Please don't take offense to this. I'm just telling it how it is-

YUP!  It's a great one.  Very enjoyable throughout.  I think I have a new favorite opener after hearing this one a few times over the last week.  Halley's > Llama, LOVE IT!!!!

Haven't downloaded the new source, but thanks for the upgrade.  Listening to the other source that I downloaded 2 weeks ago for the first time.

Halley's:  Ah, yes, the upgrade will be most welcome after hearing this.

Llama: Pretty standard.  Nice way to inject some energy at the start of the set.

My Friend: Always like to hear this one.  Although this one was a bit tame, IMO.  I like the Born on the Bayou teases at the end by Page.

Poor Heart: Pretty standard with nice little solo spots from Trey and Page.

Stash: Not the tightest composed section.  Cool, recurring riff by Trey ~5:00.  Slowly develops into a new chord progression.  The new progression doesn't really seem to be going anywhere, so Mike takes it a different, more dissonant route.  They meander with that for a couple minutes.  ~8:45 it sounds like they're starting to find the groove.  Starts to get good but goes back to the proper Stash progression/finale at 10:30.  Overall, not an above average version.  The jam meandered for a while, but never seemed to find itself.  Just my opinion.

The Horse/Silent: Standard.  I don't mind hearing this one.

DWD: Pretty straightforward rocker with nothing too crazy going on in the jam section.

Mango Song: Meh, not too big a fan of this song in general.

Cavern: Standard set closer

Overall, I can't say that I'm a big fan of the first set.  There doesn't seem to be any real highlight for me.  I'd give it a C.  Set Two review to follow later.

Halley's Comet opener was cool. and went into Llama, I guess. On two listens, the Llama didn't actually leave any impact on me.
My Friend was strong and DID leave an impact. Nice version.
Poor Heart is great. Nice little Mike Solo and Trey's solo afterwards is great. So is Page's. They're on fire which explains what comes next:

Stash. This is one that I'm a big fan of already. This recording is beautifully crisp. The whole thing is played perfectly. During the "Maybe So or Maybe not" bit, Trey starts with a dark dark take on the theme with he builds with some help from the guys into a heavy-chorded, horror movie version. Not for the faint of heart. This jam is what I love love love about the May '94 versions of Stash. After a bit of trilling at the 7minute mark it goes into a looser, more dissonant jam and some heavy drone work. Mike Fish and Page are really laying it down for Trey. Around 8:30 Trey steps out of the drone and begins playing off Mike and Page directly with more dissonant tension building for two minutes before peaking in a real mind blower close; complete with maniacal laughter from Fishman.

Horse > Silent is not only perfect for this moment.. It's necessary. It's also well played.

DWD is super short shreddage. In, out, over.

Mango is awesome. Wait, is this last week's show?

No, wait. Cavern wasn't in last week's show. This one is pumpin. Nothing out of the ordinary; just exemplary 1994 Phish.

And that's set one. Set Two tomorrow. Meanwhile, don't do anything I wouldn't do.

Yeah, I actually thought about that and even conversed with Aug about it.  We both decided to just go with it.  But yes, the 2 are very similar unfortunately.

Set one

Halleys-- Really nice opener.  Definitely one way to introduce the group that night.  An odd but good segue into...

Llama-- 1994 Llama.  Pure rippage.  Not much more can be said.

MFMF--  Solid and concise jam.

Poor Heart--  Standard, not that that is a bad thing (a recurring theme through this show for me)

Stash--  Excellent version.  One of my favorite songs, and this one definitely goes places.

Horse>Silent--  Standard...

DWD--  Odd intro as I believe I heard some "vocals" from Fish possibly... although I could be completely wrong.  Definitely some Trey shreddage, and a really nice jam that leads back into the "reprise".

MangoSong--  Always a good one for me, Trey seems to have personally dedicated this one to CK5.

Cavern--  No lyrical flubs, no musical flubs... good version!

Set one thoughts:  Excellent first set.  Nothing too out there, and no missteps.  Solid throughout, and I would almost put a ">" after each song.  Highlight for me was the Halleys>Llama and the DWD>Mango.

Set two

Sample--  Meh.. I was hoping this would be a warm up for a killer set to start after this song.

Sparkle--  Double meh..

MikeS--  Here we goooo... As soon as the jam kicks in Mike is hitting some wonderful sounding notes.  I think I heard the beginnings of a Simple jam starting to form around 5:20, but that came to nothing.  Also a "clunky" jam around 7:50 which reminded me heavily of the Wilson jam from 1996-08-14(ie. week4paugs week 1 show).  Back into MikeS at about 9:15, then heading into...

Hydrogen--  Always nice to hear, nothing special from this version.

Weekapaug--  A short but sweet rager.

Lizards--  nice cool down from the Mikes Groove, and there is some very beautiful work by Page in the middle.  Followed by the Trey solo I love so.

Juilius--  Ragin' (another theme of the night I suppose)

Big Ball Jam--  It is what it is... even though I never saw one, I don't mind hearing them. 

Harry Hood--  Solid throughout.  Trey teased something during the beginning, not exactly sure what it was.  And it could be nothing.  I can go back and check on this if anyone else knows what I am typing of.

Golgi--  Solid.

Set two thoughts:  Started off slow, picked up steam, and then road the rails to the finish. 

Encore

Ginseng & Nellie Kane--  Both very quiet, my one complaint about the recording.  But nothing can/could be done about that.  I love the washboard.

Sweet Adeline--  Picked up better on the microphones... I am imagining it may have been amplified a bit from the stage.  Nice version.  Loud crowd.

Fire--  Nice energy to close out the show after a relaxed first half to the encore.

Overall:  Solid show with nothing going TOO far out there.  I would give it an A-.
