So, we'll see if all the media outlets that have been referring to a forthcoming "iPhone 5" are dumb or not... The iPhone 4, you may recall, was the 4th version of the device (original, 3G, 3GS, 4)... the 4S was the 5th... so the next version would logically be called the 6, not the 5.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it's going to be called the 5.  Check the invitation

Well... I suppose you can't argue with that.

I still say it's incorrect.  :-P

Given that you aren't the Apple product specialist, I'd say it is you who are wrong.

My logic is ironclad. Steve Jobs would have agreed. The ship is sinking!

Hopefully you realize that the body shape of the phones changes with the number, it's not a sequential listing of device models.

Jobs would be the first to tell you that the product is what he says it is, and nothing else.

Sounds a little like the tail wagging the dog, no?

Apple can do what the hell they want, obviously. No doubt marketing drives a lot of what are, ultimately, superficial decisions like naming. I'm just saying it would be a departure from the seeming precedent set by the 4. (Maybe that was just accidental and coincidental.) Beyond that, I ain't gonna lose much sleep over this.......

before the invite, i'd just say to prepare for "the new iPhone" - but the 5 makes it pretty clear it will be the 5.

as RJ (and SJ) said, the product is what it is when they tell you what it is.

Actually it sounds like a pretty reasonable product identification scheme.

Yes, Apple can do what they want, but they know when to temper expectations (4S) and build them up (5).

The body shape naming scheme precedent extends from the 3G/3GS to the 4/4S and it doesn't look like they're changing it now.  I'm not sure even what you're trying to argue, but it seems silly.

Was I unclear? All I said was that the iPhone 4 was the 4th version of the device, so IF that was any precedent, you could logically call the 6th version of it the 6. But clearly they can and will call it whatever they want, and it won't bother me in the slightest........ As long as those three whole shares of Apple stock I own keep going up, up, up in value, I'm a happy camper.

I'd rather dwell in some dark holler where the sun refuses to shine, where the wild birds of heaven can't hear me when I whine.

At least we could get a Simpsons clip out of this, yes, silly discussion.
