Title: NFL 2012-2013
Post by: antelope19 on February 21, 2012, 10:59:26 AM
Some interesting rumors flying lately. It's gonna be an interesting off season.

Manning to the seachickens?
Mike Wallace on another team next year?
Drew Brees might hit free agency?

I would have thought that, if anything, Mike Wallace would return to 60 Minutes if his health allowed it.

I don't think it's gonna happen.  Don't be surprised if/when we trade back to get more picks like last year.  There are WAY too many needs on this team right now, Skins fans.

I just hate Washington... I know nothing of their draft situation but have heard this on the interwebz involving Justin.  It would be my luck he gets picked up by them.

So now the Colts have released Dallas Clark, Gary Brackett and Joseph Addai also. They are getting rid of 'Peyton's team' and starting over fresh for the new guy it looks like. AndrewLuck better not turn into this cities next Jeff George.

Clark still managed to put up some good numbers, well as good as you can get with Painter throwing the ball to you. Dallas Clark is going to be the one I miss the most, after Peyton that is. I hear that Dwight Freeney and Jeff Saturday may be the next to go.

On the plus side they also released Curtis Painter.

QuoteAnd to the Buffalo Bills goes Mario Williams.
Reuter: Chain reaction
How will this year's free agency impact April's draft? Chad Reuter examines the fallout of some notable developments. More ...

The star linebacker, considered the biggest prize of free agency on the defensive side of the ball, will sign a contract with the Bills, a league source said Thursday.

Williams' deal could come in around six years and be worth $96 million with $50 million guaranteed, according to league sources.

The Bills plan to announce the deal during a news conference scheduled for Thursday afternoon.

The team's spirited courting of Williams stretched into its third day on Thursday, complete with dinners, meetings and the arrival of the former Houston Texans' fiancée for a tour of the region.

Williams is a two-time Pro Bowl selection who owns a Texans franchise-best 53 career sacks, including a team single-season best 14 in 2007. Williams was limited to playing just five games last season as a result of a torn chest muscle. He also missed three games in 2010 after having surgery to repair a sports hernia.

you have to think they decided fairly early that they were not in the running.
granted the Sanchez extension would only make sense if you spent 2.5 seconds thinking about it, but you don't have that contract ready to sign unless manning wasn't in their plans.  the negotiation just takes longer than that.
so, in reality, I do think they "passed" on manning considering that he hasn't signed yet.  just my .02

A source with knowledge of the situation tells Profootballtalk.com the Cowboys and Redskins are preparing to go "nuclear" on the NFL in response to last week's salary-cap penalties.

ANALYSIS:  The two teams are contemplating "suing anyone and everyone connected" to the surprise removal of a combined $46 million in cap space last week. Although teams were reportedly warned "at least six times" they would face "serious consequences" for dumping salary into the uncapped year in 2010, the Cowboys and Redskins aren't believed to have violated any written rules. This saga is likely just beginning.

With the way this league is starting to look (i.e. two-hand touch), I may start watching rugby and say fuck the NFL. At least then I'll see some real hits.

Also, isn't it funny that in rugby they essentially tackle each other the same way as in football but WITHOUT PADS and yet no one ever bitches about player safety. Suck on that one, Goodell.

ao, I am by no means defending this trade because I hate tim tebow but boston sports radio thinks the jets gave up too much for tebow.
so, they trade their 4th round pick and their 6th round pick for the broncos 7th round pick and tebow.
they then trade stanton (who was to be their backup) and the 7th round pick they got form denver for the colts 6th round pick.
in the end, they trade stanton and their 4th round pick for tebow and the colts 6th round pick (which is the first pick of the 6th round by the way).
so, you basically use your 4th round pick on a backup quarterback who can run the wildcat offense.

so, let's analyze the patriots 4th round picks over the last several years.
last year, they didn't have one so let's use their last 3rd round pick.  ryan mallet.  hyped up QB who probably never gets a snap as a QB for the Pats.  tebow at least has won a playoff game
2010- aaron hernandez.  good player in their offense.  rather have him than tebow.
2009 - Rich Ohrnberger    yeah, I had to look up who he was too
2008 - jonathan wilhite. basically a 3rd or 4th CB that isn;t very good
2007  Kareem Brown - played one NFL game with no statistics (for the jets) and has been out of the league for years
2006 they got gostkowski.  but you really shouldn;t be using a 4th rd pick on a kicker.  he is good though.  I'll still take tebow over him and get a kicker later or in free agency.

my point is that the boston media is dumb.  there are so many ways to criticize the Jets but saying they gave up too much is just plain idiotic.

What, you want them to load up on RBs and WRs? This isn't fantasy football. Taking a kicker as good as Gostkowski in the 4th rd is a pick well spent.

last year, they didn't have one so let's use their last 3rd round pick.  ryan mallet.  hyped up QB who probably never gets a snap as a QB for the Pats.  tebow at least has won a playoff game
I'll still take tebow over him and get a kicker later or in free agency.

my point is that the boston media is dumb.  there are so many ways to criticize the Jets but saying they gave up too much is just plain idiotic.

that was conusing as fuck to read dude...

I had to go through it twice.
I thought it was just me, though.

What, you want them to load up on RBs and WRs? This isn't fantasy football. Taking a kicker as good as Gostkowski in the 4th rd is a pick well spent.
you can get a K much later than the 4th round or just as a FA.

it's pretty simple.  the trade ends up being tebow for a 4th round pick.  far from giving up too much considering when you look at the quality of a player you get in the 4th round.

ao, I am by no means defending this trade because I hate tim tebow but boston sports radio thinks the jets gave up too much for tebow.
so, they trade their 4th round pick and their 6th round pick for the broncos 7th round pick and tebow.
they then trade stanton (who was to be their backup) and the 7th round pick they got form denver for the colts 6th round pick.
in the end, they trade stanton and their 4th round pick for tebow and the colts 6th round pick (which is the first pick of the 6th round by the way).
so, you basically use your 4th round pick on a backup quarterback who can run the wildcat offense.

don't get me wrong.  I hate tebow.  I hate the move.
all I'm saying is talk about the disarray of signing sanchez and then trading for tebow.
I don't think the compensation for tebow was too much.  I still hate the move.  I just don't like the reasoning for the criticism.

it's not like giving up an extra 3 draft picks (and good picks at that) for a QB that has a horrible team around him.  just sayin'

I'm with you 100%. From a business standpoint, it was a solid trade. But from an I fucking hate Tim Tebow standpoint (which is the only acceptable standpoint imo), it would piss me off to no end if I had to root for Tebow.

I hate the guy.  he is so overhyped in a league where great QBs are putting up great numbers.

yep.

I think the only other change I noticed was a slight tweak to STL's jerseys (maybe?). I could be wrong though. I also noticed a few uniforms had the teams second color added to the collar.

http://www.businessinsider.com/new-nfl-uniforms-2012-4#arizona-cardinals-1

The rumored jerseys that were "leaked" a few weeks ago were so fucking sick (some of them, anyway), but I knew there was no way so many teams were going to make such drastic changes to their jerseys. A few of them looked like arena football jerseys. A bit too flashy.

I guess some people were convinced that since Nike was taking over the uniform production, they were going to do a complete overhaul and create brand new jerseys for every single team.

Here's a link to the rumored jerseys before they were officially released. I think it was dumb to believe ANY of these jerseys were actually going to be into production and worn by the players. Who knows though, maybe these are a sort of 'third' jersey that will be worn a few times this season, although I highly doubt it. That said, it's still cool to see pictures of these crazy ideas for jerseys.

I thought the uniforms for Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Denver, Oakland and Seattle were all pretty dope. The others..... well, they're just terrible. Seattles rumored uni's are better than the new ones they officially unveiled. I especially liked the Raiders uni's. Dallas' jerseys in those pics are pretty sweet (minus those god-awful pants), although I'm not sure how I would feel about them straying away from the traditional jerseys. Denvers helmets were sweet, too.

The rest look like cheesy college football jerseys, and some even look like terrible, overly-flashy arena football.

Brian Dawkins, easily my favorite player ever, to retire. I never really forgave the Eagles for not keeping him here for the end of his career (although my hate-hate relationship with the team had already kicked in).

http://espn.go.com/blog/nfceast/post?id=38355

Quote
Brian Dawkins left his mark in Philadelphia

Former Philadelphia Eagles safety Brian Dawkins, who spent the final three years of his career with the Broncos much to the chagrin of Eagles fans, has announced his retirement from the NFL. Since the news is not a surprise, the accolades began to pour in instantly. Rich Hofmann writes that the next stop for Dawkins is the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. Jeff McLane writes that the Eagles have issued an invitation for Dawkins to come back to Philadelphia and officially retire as an Eagle. Ashley Fox, who was a columnist at the Philadelphia Inquirer before she was our NFL columnist, recalls that newspaper ranking Dawkins the fifth-greatest Eagle of all time when it did an issue some years back on the 75th anniversary of the team.

"He was the perfect match of personality with the fan base," Ashley said this morning when I called her looking for help on a Dawkins retirement post. "Because he cared as much as they did. He gave it all up on game day and became this hard-hitting enforcer even though that really wasn't his personality off the field."

Eagles fans, players and coaches loved Dawkins. One of the most popular questions I got from Eagles fans over the past year was whether they'd ever consider bringing him back. In spite of drafting safeties in the second round of each of the last two drafts, the Eagles have not been able to fill the on-field and off-field voids left by Dawkins when he was allowed to leave via free agency following the 2008 season.

Players who are parts of championship teams tend to be the players who are universally loved forever by that team's fans. Rare is the player who makes that kind of indelible mark without the aid of a championship ring. Don Mattingly with the Yankees springs to mind, adored by fans for whom he was the one shining light in a rare down era. Maybe Dan Marino with the Dolphins, for his sheer excellence. Dawkins is such a player in Philadelphia. I imagine the ovation for him whenever he shows up at an Eagles game will be deafening. He made his mark in Philadelphia, which has missed him for three years and seemingly always will.

About goddamned time

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/blog/mike-freeman/18839915/pro-bowl-is-all-but-dead

Quote
Pro Bowl is all but dead

The NFL and union are in negotiations that could possibly kill the concept of the Pro Bowl game, multiple sources confirmed.

Both league and union officials say privately that while this year's game might still be played, it's highly unlikely the concept would last beyond that. The story was first reported by ESPN.

"We have been in discussions with the union about the future of the Pro Bowl," league spokesman Greg Aiello said in an e-mail. "No determination has been made yet about this season's game."

Commissioner Roger Goodell wasn't happy with last year's Pro Bowl which was widely viewed as a joke as players refused to even make basic tackles. And most players have long believed the game was a tremendous waste of time.

Additonally, the idea of an all-star game is an antiquated one, arising from an era when there were fewer opportunities to see the game's best stars on television. Now, because of the availability of so many games, fans can see the top players anytime they choose.

But make no mistake there is another factor at work. The league claims the Pro Bowl losses money. And while the union seems mostly in agreement that the league could live just fine without the game, there are some in the union wondering if the NFL is bluffing about canceling the game.

The league will likely keep the concept of Pro Bowl bonuses, I'm told, but it nonetheless seems the game itself is all but dead.

Actually, the move to that Sunday was a last ditch effort to save the Pro-Bowl. They figured with the Superbowl still to come, people would still be focused on football so much that they'd actually watch. That theory proved horribly wrong, of course. Week before or week after - doesn't matter. It's a shitty game with no compelling reason to watch.

What's even funnier is that no matter how bad the Eagles are, I know we are guaranteed 2 wins every year when we play the Skins.

Speaking of the Dream Team, I forgot to mention they traded Asante Samuel to the Falcons for a 7th rd pick. Hard to believe they couldn't get more than that for him, but good fucking riddance. I definitely won't miss watching him dive at people's knees every week.

Wow, I always liked Seau, even when he was a Patriot.

Quote
Report: NFL legend Junior Seau found dead at his California home

TMZ is reporting retired NFL star Junior Seau is dead, and the police are investigating a shooting in his home:

QuoteNFL legend Junior Seau was found dead in his home in Oceanside, CA ... and cops are investigating a shooting ... multiple law enforcement sources tell TMZ.

Cops are currently at Seau's home just outside San Diego. Seau was 43-years-old ... and leaves behind 3 kids and an ex-wife.

Seau, a 12-time Pro Bowler and 6-time First-Team All-Pro, was selected fifth overall in the 1990 NFL draft after an outstanding collegiate career at USC. He played with the San Diego Chargers through the 2002 season, spent 2003-2005 with the Miami Dolphins, and then signed with the New England Patriots in time for the 2006 season. In New England's perfect regular season of 2007, he played in all 16 games and started four. Seau first retires after that season, only to come back and play in 2008 and 2009 before finally leaving the NFL for good.

"I'm going to go surf," he told Showtime upon his January, 2010 retirement announcement. Whatever happens, I can say, honestly say, that that probably was my last game."

Seau is the eighth member of the Chargers 1994 Super Bowl team to pass. We will keep you updated on this story as more news is confirmed.

A nice story about Junior from the pages of Deadspin (http://deadspin.com/5907297/the-night-junior-seau-picked-up-a-marine-captains-tab-and-serenaded-bar-patrons-with-a-ukulele)

Quote
The Night Junior Seau Picked Up A Marine Captain's Tab And Serenaded Bar Patrons With A Ukulele

An email arrived this morning from Albert Flores Jr., a U.S. Marine Corps captain who lives in Sneads Ferry, N.C. It's about a chance encounter Flores had last year in a Southern California bar with Junior Seau, the former Chargers and Patriots linebacker who died yesterday of a suspected suicide. This is the email in its entirety, with slight edits made for publication:

On my final day of a business trip last year to the Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif., I was walking along the Oceanside Harbor in search of a place to eat and have a few beers. In the mood for something simple I had hoped to find a small bar that served food and was not too crowded. I came across exactly that—a small bar with maybe six customers inside. Sitting next to me at the bar were three large men of Samoan decent who were laughing and having a good time with the bartender. I wasn't sure at first, but then after a double-take it clicked in my head that I was sitting with Junior Seau. He was a monster of a man, wearing a ball cap and all smiles. I couldn't believe that I was sitting next to one of my favorite football players growing up as a kid. The same linebacker that I impersonated for years on all my football video games.

After a few minutes, the older of the three Samoan men had asked what I was up to in Oceanside and I had told him that I was a Captain in the Marines headed back to my home station at Camp Lejeune, N.C. Junior Seau interrupted and said, "Wow, man. I really admire what you do. You guys are real heroes." Starstruck for a moment, I didn't know how to respond. Did one of my childhood heroes really just call me a hero? He did indeed, and refused to let me pay for my dinner or any more drinks for the night. I was surprised to find out that Junior Seau was not only a former member of the Patriots, he was an American patriot.

Junior then introduced me to the other two men sitting with him, his cousin and his uncle. I couldn't believe how sincerely interested Junior and his family were about my military service. They asked about helicopters, machine guns, parachuting and even expressed gratitude towards military families and specifically spouses for enduring such hardship during a time of war.

After a couple of hours of talking, Junior then began to brag about his musical talent. That he had sat "first chair" in his high school band and that was something most people didn't know about him. I called him on it and he was up to the challenge. Junior said, "You sit right there, Captain, I'm gonna go to my car and get my ukulele. We're gonna spread some joy around here." I didn't know it at the time, but over the next two hours the way in which I look at football players would be changed forever.

Junior returned to the bar with his Ukulele and started to play. The tune from "Brown-Eyed Girl" was coming from Junior's Ukulele at it was surprisingly good. Then, he started to sing ... and he was amazing. One of the most ferocious tacklers in the history of football was playing a ukulele in an empty bar at 11:00 p.m. and serenading the few that remained. He then started to play some more and his cousin and uncle joined in the chorus. They were a harmonic family full of melodies ... and they were good—real good.

We sat there for another two hours, talking, listening to Junior and his uncle play the ukulele and having a good time. Time and again, Junior thanked me for my service and reminded me how proud he was that his hometown was in the heart of Marine Corps territory, just outside Camp Pendleton. I tried to remind Junior that I was the one that was thankful for the evening. That I was amazed at how real of a person Junior Seau was and not just No. 55 on my television screen on Sunday afternoons. Junior Seau was a man of smiles, laughter, family, respect and he loved his country.

It's troubling to hear of the passing of another great NFL football player at an age so young. But I'm especially sad to hear that it was Junior Seau who had passed. A man who for one evening last year I had the opportunity to meet and come to admire. The day after I met Junior last year, I began to follow his non-football charity exploits and grew to respect him even further.

I hope this story will aid in an attempt to remember not only a linebacker but a fun, loving person as well.

Albert S. Flores Jr.

I had the misfortune of turning on the ESPYs the other night right as Brees won some made up award for something. He proceeded to give the most rambling, disjointed, snoozer of an acceptance speech I've ever heard. He droned on for about 4 mins thanking just about every single member of the organization by name. What a bore.

It will be interesting to see how he fares this year without Payton calling the plays.

Yeah, I don't see Brees going into broadcasting when he retires... he ain't that guy. He is an amazing quarterback, though. I think it will be an interesting season without Payton. I see a playoff berth, but I would be surprised if they do well once they get there.

My understanding is that the hold-out had more to do with the terms of years 3-5 in the contract than it did the difference between 19 and 20 mil per year. Drew wanted to make sure he's in NOLA for the rest of his career.

That secondary looked like poop.  Webster was the only guy with any real game experience.

So with an NHL lockout looming, gonna do football this season. Eli can still be clutch when he needs to. To bad Cruz can't catch for fucking shit. Also, went down to the giants training camp this summer. Was cool. But not a giants fan.

I hope the bears don't blow again

The Cowboys actually looked decent last night.  Not stating that the Giants didn't help them along, but all things considered I think the cowgirls are going to be a pretty tough out.

They did look good last night, but it's week 1.  I'm not reading too much into it and we all know Romo's love of throwing season-crushing interceptions.

I drafted Kevin Ogletree in the last round of a fantasy draft because he played college ball at Virginia. I figured he'd be a solid option when one of my starters had a bye. Dude had 31 points for my bench  :frustrated: :frustrated: :frustrated:

QuotePhiladelphia Eagles: Everything that is wrong with humanity.

I don't know who's hyping them, Eb, but I agree they in no way deserve it. I'm not convinced the Skins will be able to do what they did yesterday all season, but the Eagles could very easily finish last in the division.

I had to dig up some of my words from the preseason last year because they are still quite applicable today. God, I hate that fat fuck.

Quote from: runawayjimbo on August 29, 2011, 09:45:46 PM
Watching [Vick] all of last year and this preseason there's no doubt in my mind he drastically overperformed last year. And bvaz, I don't even think teams figured him out, I just think he reverted to his normal performance level. I mean, his entire career he struggles with accuracy and reads, and he comes out for 10 games and looks amazing (and those 10 games were some of the most amazing things I've ever seen on a football field) and we're supposed to believe he can repeat that for 6 yrs? He's looked awful this preseason and the OL is a joke.

This is exactly why the Phillies are now this city's favorite team after being a football town my entire life. The Eagles front office are morons. This season will be a bust of epic proportions.

Quote from: runawayjimbo on August 29, 2011, 10:41:33 PM
Meanwhile the LBs are still undersized and can't tackle and I think I could get through the right side of the OL (which is awesome for a lefty QB).

They're also getting hurt by all the coaching changes. Mudd and Washburn are great but it'll take time to get used to new systems/techniques and not having an offseason is clearly hurting them there. Oh yeah, and our new D coordinator has been offensive line coach his entire career and has never had to call plays in-game before.

And on top of it all sits the fat man who gets more undeserved respect at the national level than any other coach. For 12 yrs I've watched this blubbering dickbag mismanage the clock, refuse to run the ball more than 20 times a game, and chronically fail to convert 3rd downs. They will never win the Super Bowl with this jackass at the helm and if they do it will be in spite of him, not because of him. I hope he chokes on a chicken wing at halftime of the opener.

A lot of these ESPN analysts.  Not saying that they have all of the answers, but many have them winning the NFC East.  I think if they can get their shit together they certainly could.  They have the talent, but talent doesn't always do it.

And as much as I think Vick is electrifying to watch, he's just not a good QB.

Fuck ESPN. They've been on Andy Reid's dick for years. Adam Schefter is a doosh and Herm Edwards may be the dumbest person ever to wear a microphone.

And yes, Vick is simply a terrible, terrible QB. For every electrifying play he makes 4 that show just how stupid he really is.

But again, the biggest problem to me is the coach. How the best RB in the NFL only gets 20 carries on a day when your dumb ass QB has 4 picks is beyond me.

I thought Flacco put his big-boy pants on, yesterday. Offense seemed to be clicking, though it was the Bengals. Ravens have a great schedule this year, to prove themselves as a real powerhouse team. This will be a fun ride!

Broncos/Steelers game was a beast. Have to say it was good watching Peyton carve up their D. I watched that whole game, when I got home from working 4 great O's/Yanks games at the Yard. Awesome week of sports in Baltimore!

Calling it now. My X-mas wish list includes a Nats/O's WS, and Ravens/Skins SB.

As someone who grew up idolizing any and every DC sports team, I can safely say "ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ"

It's football season, we got RG3 to fawn over. No time for boring ass baseball. It's a clown sport, bro.

:hereitisyousentimentalbastard

There's barely room in the NFL thread for RG3 talk, much less baseball talk.

I'm sure there's an MLB thread somewhere in here.......I guess.

Fuck baseball. That is all.

There's a great opportunity for a Redskins joke here but I'll get smited.

I smote you for not making the Redskins joke. So there.

The real refs would have called a defenseless receiver penalty there. Since that's not a penalty in the Lingerie Football league, the replacements aren't used to having to throw a flag for that.

I just called to tell Directv customer service I was switching to Time Warner because they now offer the Red Zone Channel ala cart and Directv doesn't. To keep me as a customer they gave me the Sunday ticket for free. Just gotta remember to cancel in June.

Directv is probably shitting their pants and willing to do what it takes to keep customers.

This hit didn't merit a penalty flag, but did earn Janoris Jenkins a $15k fine from the league office. Player safety my ass, this whole thing has turned into a giant racket.

The way I understand it, redzone channel is a little on directv because you can switch to a particular game if you see a big play and you want to keep watching that game (because the sunday ticket lets you do that, but not with other carriers that dont offer sunday ticket). The redzone channel is a little too ADHD for me anyway, I'd rather just pick one game I care about and watch it start to finish and go back and watch the highlights from the others later.

Well, not for free, but....I actually called DirecTV for the third time about Sunday Ticket.  The first time was about a month ago and they lowered it from $300 to $240.  Then I called back a few weeks ago and they dropped it to $210.  Then I called yesterday to say that I'm hearing about people getting it for free.  She said she couldn't give it me for free, but gave it to me for half off ($150) and then take $10/month off my bill for a year.  So I'm essentially getting it for $30.

Organized crime will take care of all of this. Once replacement refs are threatened with having their kneecaps broken. Calls will be made correctly.

And it's brilliant. Goodell doesn't have to do anything. It's equally shitty for every team. We'll continue to watch, since NFL is still King.

Here's the league's official statement -

  NFL STATEMENT ON FINAL PLAY

OF GREEN BAY PACKERS-SEATTLE SEAHAWKS GAME

In Monday's game between the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks, Seattle faced a 4th-and-10 from the Green Bay 24 with eight seconds remaining in the game.

Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson threw a pass into the end zone. Several players, including Seattle wide receiver Golden Tate and Green Bay safety M.D. Jennings, jumped into the air in an attempt to catch the ball.

While the ball is in the air, Tate can be seen shoving Green Bay cornerback Sam Shields to the ground. This should have been a penalty for offensive pass interference, which would have ended the game. It was not called and is not reviewable in instant replay.

When the players hit the ground in the end zone, the officials determined that both Tate and Jennings had possession of the ball. Under the rule for simultaneous catch, the ball belongs to Tate, the offensive player. The result of the play was a touchdown.

Replay Official Howard Slavin stopped the game for an instant replay review. The aspects of the play that were reviewable included if the ball hit the ground and who had possession of the ball. In the end zone, a ruling of a simultaneous catch is reviewable. That is not the case in the field of play, only in the end zone.

Referee Wayne Elliott determined that no indisputable visual evidence existed to overturn the call on the field, and as a result, the on-field ruling of touchdown stood. The NFL Officiating Department reviewed the video today and supports the decision not to overturn the on-field ruling following the instant replay review.

The result of the game is final.

I disagree.  These calls are costing teams wins and losses.  The success of your team directly affects its popularity, and therefore, $$$ in terms of jersey and ticket sales, etc.  Hell, these no-calls will eventually cost a team a star player as seen this weekend with Darius Heyward-Bey.  There's an absolute lack of respect on the field by both the players and coaches for these replacement refs and games are getting out of control.  It seems to be getting worse every week this year.  Hell, Matt Schaub lost a piece of his frickin' ear because of a very dangerous helmet to helmet hit by a Broncos defender.  Yes, there was a penalty on that play, but, IMO, you start losing the "star power" on your team, and these owners are gonna change their tune real quick.

Yeah, I'd argue the nasty hits and lack of respect and missed calls leading to behind the refs backs unsportsmanlike stuff is INCREASING popularity, not decreasing it.

I like a good clean hit as much as the next guy, but there is no place in the game for this:

Dude clearly leads with the crown of his helmet and he was just suspended for a game and fined 50K today.  But if Houston retaliates in that game, Manning's career life is over.

You know what's funny?  The fact that the NFL Ref lockout is such a bigger story in this country, that we don't hear a peep about the NHL lockout.

I don't know, maybe it's just me.

It's over!

Official statement:

QuoteThe NFL and NFLRA are pleased to announce that they have reached an agreement tonight on an eight-year collective bargaining agreement, subject to ratification by the NFLRA.

"Our officials will be back on the field starting tomorrow night," Commissioner Roger Goodell said. "We appreciate the commitment of the NFLRA in working through the issues to reach this important agreement."

"Our Board of Directors has unanimously approved taking this proposed CBA to the membership for a ratification vote," said Scott Green, president of the NFLRA. "We are glad to be getting back on the field for this week's games."

Fans cheer refs, and Ravens beat Browns 23-16 (http://sports.yahoo.com/news/fans-cheer-refs-ravens-beat-035726008--nfl.html)

Quote...

As they walked onto the field hours before this game, the officiating crew received a round of applause and shouts of encouragement from fans in the lower sections. Head linesman Wayne Mackie and line judge Jeff Seeman both tipped their caps to acknowledge the support.

And then, before the pregame coin flip, referee Gene Steratore greeted the players at midfield by saying, ''Good evening, men, it's good to be back.''

Many in the sellout crowd of 70,944 stood and roared their approval.

Afterward, Ravens coach John Harbaugh echoed the sentiment of the crowd.

''Welcome back to the officials. Good to have them back,'' he said. ''These guys are really good. The communication was good. I didn't agree with every call, but they were excellent.''

Over/under on how long all those warm and fuzzies are gonna last?

QuoteThe fans waited until the third quarter to boo the officials.

Ah.

for the past few years, I've seen the Giants on a late potential game winning drive against the Eagles, only to blow it on a turnover.
they've gotten creative. Offensive penalty, then trying a kick from 54 yards on 3rd down with 15 sec left.
Sideline pass, anyone?

The five-interception night was the second of Romo's career, making him the only active quarterback with two five-INT games. Fittingly, both have come on Monday Night Football. It's always been the big stage where Romo flops the hardest.

my problem was actually the play before that - when they already had the 10 yard penalty against them and instead of trying for a short gain (i.e. 5-10 yards), they called a play that was meant to go long.  the 5 yards in that situation were far more important in terms of kicking distance that the risk of NOT getting the completion - which is then exactly what happened, and of course the kick was short by less than 5 yards.

also, i don't believe we actually threw more than 1 or 2 passes the entire game that were directed at the End Zone.  YOU PLAY.  TO WIN.  THE GAME.  :frustrated:

NO would be dumb to not try to keep him and in recent press conferences Patyon claims to have every intent of coaching in NO next season.  He did recently move his family to the DFW area and with Jason Garrett's window with the Cowboys closing quickly I can see Jerry and Stephen Jones  making Petyon a large offer.  My Cowboys will remain a .500 franchise until the Jones' cease to participate in player personnel, operations, and GM duties.

I didn't see it but I believe it.  Being a Cowboys fan right now is a crappy situation to be in.  We have an owner that cares more about making money then winning football games.  They are turning Cowboys Stadium into a shopping mall instead of a sports complex.  They are great marketers (I know it sounds redundant with my previous sentence) but horrible owners.  We have had one playoff victory since 1997, unacceptable.  The NFC East and the Cowboys' franchise have collapsed from what they both used to be.  RG3 and the Giants are all we have left.

I read on an ESPN blog the other day that said something like we would most likely pick up Sean Payton next year, but I don't see that happening. Jerry Jones' ego is too big to swallow his pride and make a move that would show that he was wrong in the past. Payton also lives in Dallas (not that it really matters)

went to this game and it was an amazing experience.  if the bears had pulled out a win it would have been one of the best nights ever.  the preparty scene, the energy for such a big game, the weather, and then the extreme disappointment...what a night.

Meh, I'd be surprised if it was different from steelers-ravens games of the past.  Sure they have a back up qb in there, but you all don't have a starting caliber corner on your roster right now.  Steelers are going to run the ball to set up the play action and keep that explosive ravens offense off the field.  Final score prediction: ravens 17 steelers 14

Of course if he comes to Philly next year, this entire statement will be retracted.

My Letter to Santa
Who Else Can I Ask for Help?
by Tony Bogyo
December 17, 2012

Dear Santa,

I know you're a busy guy this time of year and you have a ton of mail to get through – almost all of it from children under 10. I'm hoping that because I am from a far less common demographic, men in their 40s, you might consider my letter in the interest of diversity.

Like the letters you received from my kids, I'm going to list several things I hope you can deliver – please bring as many as you can. It seems a bit selfish, I know, but I'm hoping this is just because as an adult I'm conditioned to give rather than request this holiday season. So I don't seem quite to selfish, I'll at least try and explain my list.

I think I've been pretty good this year and I should by on the "nice" list if so please bring me:

A young defensive back who can be in the same ZIP code as the receiver he is attempting to cover. If possible, I'd also like this guy to be able to turn his head towards the quarterback – if you play a receiver too close and make contact without turning your head or knowing where the ball is you tend to get flagged for pass interference.
Some defensive players who don't bite on every single fake the offense throws their way. If you look in the dictionary under "gullible" you find a picture of the Bills defense – those guys bite on every fake- hook, line and sinker.
A pair of hands for T.J. Graham – I know he's a rookie, but I can't even figure if this kid has promise or is yet another poor draft pick – he drops too many passes for me to figure it out.
A third down stop. Buffalo is capable of coming through with some nice defensive plays on first and second down (sometimes both), but it seems that even when it's third and 38 the defense gives it up. I don't think we've made a third down stop since 2000.
Defensive linemen who can win one-on-one battles, at least some of the time. With the money we pay some of these guys you'd think they might be able to beat single coverage once in a while – in fact, our entire defensive philosophy counts on it, but it almost never happens.
Healthy offensive linemen. After years of having horrific offensive lines, the Bills miraculously managed to put together a hallway decent line, but it has almost no depth and a constant stream of injuries prevent us from seeing what this unit is capable of.
Some dignity. Quite frankly, it sucks being a Bills fan – it's embarrassing. Whether you're losing to a team you really should beat or getting bitch-slapped by just about any team with a winning record, it's hard to be "talkin' proud" about being a Bills fan to friends and co-workers on Mondays. At first it was fun showing how tough you were by standing and proudly claiming Bills fandom, but seriously – that got old almost a decade ago – now it just sucks.
Stop the Toronto games – nobody cares. Bills fans don't like them and don't go, leaving the team with 7 home games and 9 away games. Fans in Toronto are apathetic and rightly so – the games have been dismal. You have a real problem when you can't sell tickets in a country where their national pastime is in a lockout and you need Psy at halftime to put butts in seats. I'm betting that today's marquee listed Psy first, then the Bills – just like Spinal Tap opening for a puppet show.
A quarterback who can complete a pass longer than 12 yards. I understand downfield throws are difficult, but Ryan Fitzpatrick NEVER makes them, even if the receiver is wide open. Oh, the things you could do if opposing defenses had to respect the deep ball.
A defensive adjustment. Once, just once, I'd like the Bills to learn from a first half ass-kicking and figure out how to stop getting their asses kicked the same way in the second half. While other teams make in-game adjustments, the Bills take weeks to figure it out. If players and coaches are too stupid to figure it out they should be replaced with people of higher intelligence.
A linebacker – seriously, almost anything would be an upgrade over what we have today.
A leader in the locker room. I don't see anyone on the team getting angry and compelling those around him to step up their game – its play, lose, collect your check, repeat – where is the passion? The pride?
Some organizational leadership that's less than 60 years old. There's something to be said for wisdom and experience, but football is a young man's game. Ralph Wilson has nearly hit triple digits, Buddy Nix is 73 and Chan Gailey is 60. This may get you a group discount for prostate cancer screenings, but it doesn't do much to ensure you're in step with today's NFL. When your idea of a football great is Bart Starr or Elroy "Crazylegs" Hirsch you might be a bit out of touch with how the game works today.
A coach with some balls. I know – that's crude, but do you have any other explanation of the ultra-conservative styles of Chan Gailey and his predecessor, Dick Jauron? Just about the only way the Bills HAVEN'T lost a game in the past decade has been by playing it too risky. At this point, do you have much to lose? If nothing else taking more risks might allow the Bills to lose in new and exotic ways.
Some sort of plan for the Bills going forward. There's a huge cloud of uncertainty hanging over the Bills – nobody knows what will happen when Ralph passes so we all sit and wait. It's really hard to build something with that type of uncertainty.

Anyway, that's my list. You may be surprised that for this demographic I didn't ask for a sports car, boat or younger woman - I'm guessing you get a lot of that. I know I've asked for a lot – probably too much – my understanding is that you have excellent toy manufacturing facilities at your disposal as that is your core business, but I'm hoping you may have some ability to get things done in the NFL. I'm sorry you were booed by Philadelphia fans – let me be the first to say that they do NOT represent all of us fans. Thanks for doing what you do – Merry Christmas.

Love this time of year in the NFL.  NFC East is getting exciting.  Also, really hoping that Adrian Peterson breaks the rushing record.  BOOMER!  While Christmas shopping after work on Thursday I ran into Billy Simms.  I got his autograph, shook his hand, and gave a good "Boomer Sooner."  Thought that was pretty cool.

As a Bills fan, I'm very content this time of year.  I've had several months to come to grips that my team sucks and that there are more important things in life.  I no longer have that undying, hopeful urge to plant myself on the couch to capture every moment of that thrilling season of Buffalo football.  Leave that to the New England, Baltimore and Green Bay fans.  Well, you guys can have it.  I'll be content spending quality time with the family.  Making popcorn and watching George C. Scott's Christmas Carol, which is far more enjoyable than getting shithoused on a Sunday afternoon and urinating on stuff.  Thank God I don't have to deal with any of that nonsense.

NEWS: Saints agreed in principle to a five-year contract with head coach Sean Payton.

ANALYSIS:  Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, the extension is similar to the one signed by Payton and the Saints in September of 2011.  That extension was good through 2015, although it was later voided due to Payton's bounty suspension.  The new deal is good through 2017 and will become official once Sean Payton's suspension formally ends after Super Bowl XLVII.  Payton has a 62-34 record in six seasons as Saints head coach, including a Super Bowl victory.  The new deal ensures that Payton will not flirt with the Dallas Cowboys, who were believed to have at least some interest in him if they missed the playoffs under Jason Garrett.  Payton's extension in New Orleans is good news for Saints skill-position players.  He's perhaps the premier offensive schemer and game-day playcaller in all the NFL.

Not sure "witness" is the appropriate word. Lulz. Have a look at the case and the missing white suit. Just not enough evidence to convict beyond doubt. And he also turned coat on the other two in a plea, not that it did any good as they were later acquitted. Regardless, he received a quarter million dollar fine from the league and settled the civil suits out of court. "Witness"....I think not. Second, he has 6 children to 4 different women. I'll be happy as long as neither of the AFC teams win the SB. For such an awesome regular season across the league (unless you're a jaguars or chiefs fan I guess) this has been a real shit sandwich of a playoffs

Really? I'd say 50% have been great games. Baltimore v. Denver and Atlanta v. Seahawks were AWESOME. Watching Kapernick come into his own was ridic too. 25% good games.

Exciting games, to be sure, but I've been pretty unhappy with the outcomes. Teams winning on last second field goals? Games going to overtime that should have never even been close? The Bengals in the playoffs? Crap.

I'm also in a shit mood still because of that skins game so that might have something to do with it.

That's just crazy talk. I would have been happier going back to stupid Ray Rhodes rather than another year of the fat man.

I was fired up at first because I really wanted Gus Bradley who was in town last night and I figured the announcement was coming today. But of course, Lurie goes for the flashy offense-oriented dude rather than the proven, hard-nosed defensive one. But after hearing what seems like every beat writer at the Oregonian over the past couple hours talk about him, I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. They all seemed to think that he was such an innovator and that he will be able to adapt his system rather than trying to make stupid Nick Foles run a spread offense. So I'm disappointed, but cautiously optimistic at this point.

And hey, if he doesn't work out, at least I won't have to change my fantasy name (Fire the Fat Man).

Good luck with that, bvaz

http://espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/story/_/id/8858412/new-york-jets-hire-marty-mornhinweg-offensive-coordinator-according-sources

Quote
Sources: Marty Mornhinweg to Jets

In a radical departure from his ground-and-pound philosophy, New York Jets coach Rex Ryan is bringing the West Coast offense to New Jersey.

Ryan has decided to hire former Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, league sources confirmed. Mornhinweg will replace Tony Sparano, who was fired after one season as the Jets' coordinator.

The Michael Vick speculation already has begun.

Vick is expected to be released by the Eagles, and the Jets could be looking to replace Mark Sanchez. Ryan has an affinity for Vick, but salary-cap restrictions make it unlikely he'll land with the Jets. Sanchez counts $12.8 million on the cap.

The Jets interviewed at least five people for the job, including former Baltimore Ravens coordinator Cam Cameron and former Cleveland Browns coach Pat Shurmur.

They also met with New Orleans Saints quarterbacks coach Joe Lombardi and Stanford offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton, who was hired by the Indianapolis Colts for the same position.

Mornhinweg was the only one brought back for a second interview, according to a source. It's interesting that he didn't follow his mentor, Andy Reid, to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Mornhinweg, 50, spent 10 seasons with the Eagles, the last seven as the primary play caller. The Eagles were ranked in the top 10 in total offense in five of those seven seasons, thanks to the quarterback play of Donovan McNabb and Vick and an array of skill-position talent.

He won't have those luxuries with the Jets, who dropped to 30th in total offense under Sparano. Their quarterback situation is a mess, with Sanchez coming off a career-worst season and Tim Tebow floating in limbo.

Mornhinweg is known as a quarterback guru, and his expertise should help Sanchez -- if he remains on the roster. The Jets fired their quarterbacks coach, Matt Cavanaugh, the only position coach Sanchez has known.

Mornhinweg faces a massive rebuilding project, with five starters headed to free agency. The Jets' top receiver, Santonio Holmes, is returning from foot surgery. After the season, Ryan took the blame for the offensive struggles, making the admission that he failed over four years to establish an identity for the offense.

After preaching a run-oriented approach, Ryan said he wanted to divorce himself from ground-and-pound. He said he wanted an "aggressive, attack-style" offense, mirroring the mentality they have on defense.

"When we search for a new offensive coordinator," he said, "I want somebody with that same type of belief that I have and that same passion and energy and that same attack mentality and unpredictability."

once Talib got hurt, it was over for the Patriots.  it took longer than it should have to expose his absence but Boldin was a monster in the 4th.

I know what you are saying about Brady throwing it away but there was less than zero chance he could have run for that.

the slide with the cleat up was ARod-esque slapping the ball out of the glove.

I know their defense is young but the reality is they are just not good and I'm not sure they ever will be.
2nd half aside, their offense is amazing and just a real pleasure to watch at how they move down the field so effortlessly and use so many players.  it was a treat to watch them after watching Matt Ryan use only 3 players in their passing offense.

QuoteProud of my husband and the Pats. By the way, if anyone is bored, please go to Ray Lewis' Wikipedia page. 6 kids 4 wives. Acquitted for murder. Paid a family off. Yay. What a hall of fame player! A true role model!

And then someone made her come back with this utterly contrived bullshit "apology (http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/wes-welker-wife-complains-ray-lewis-facebook-then-041449530--nfl.html)":

QuoteI'm deeply sorry for my recent post on Facebook. I let the competitiveness of the game and the comments people were making about a team I dearly love get the best of me. My actions were emotional and irrational and I sincerely apologize to Ray Lewis and anyone affected by my comment after yesterday's game.

It is such an accomplishment for any team to make it to the NFL playoffs, and the momentary frustration I felt should not overshadow the accomplishments of both of these amazing teams.

Give me a break. She has nothing to apologize for. Sorry Ravens fans (speaking here as someone who's glad the Pats lost), but I don't understand this ongoing, and now escalating, lionization of Ray Lewis: Getting hugs from the commissioner at the season finale; being verbally fellated by every sports commentator out there; and not a peep about what is, at best, a very dark cloud of lingering suspicion over his role in a cold-blooded homicide.

It bothers me that just because a guy is really, really good at hitting other guys on a football field, no one gives a shit about anything else. Christ, steroids are more controversial. (And why is that? Probably because we, as sports fans, don't like our sports-viewing enjoyment being sullied by cheating... murder is OK, as long as it doesn't impact the product on the field. That's not too selfish, right?)

So someone actually bothers to come out and say what some of us are thinking, and hits the nail right on the head, and immediately thereafter some PR flak hands her one of those typically pathetic statements that sounds about the furthest thing from sincere. THE LEAGUE IS NOT TO BE EMBARRASSED.

I think they just surround him with all this hype cuz its his last season and he might get a superbowl ring.

I mean that shit was what like 12 years ago? and everyone got acquitted in that case, not just Lewis, the other two guys that were apparently involved also got the charges dismissed (maybe cuz ray burned the evidence) but innocent until proven guilty bro.

I sure dont see him as a inspirational person or role model and the attention he is getting is probably because this is his last year and he might win a superbowl ring on his last year out, and that he is an original Raven.  I dont think he is a role model for anyone inspiring football players. In fact in a recent interview before NE pats game, he straight up said he isnt a role model for anyone and no one should follow the path that he took. He seems to have repented for his actions, it might all be bullshit but at least he is putting on that veneer rather than acting like some hardcore thug dude.

All sports stars get caught up in some crazy shit in their career, every time I seeMichael Irvin on TV with all those talking heads pre/post show analysis I cringe. Dude got busted with a buncha coke (multiple times) had multiple assault cases and a suspected rape case and he is an announcer and regarded as a great Hall of Fame football player. Well, Lewis didn't get acquitted -- his charges were dropped in exchange for testifying against his companions. And he plead guilty to obstruction of justice, and was fined a quarter million by the league. He later entered into settlements with family members of the two victims. If he was so innocent, why do that? What not fight to clear your good name? I do believe in innocent until proven guilty, so all I'm saying is that, at best, the proverbial jury should be very much still out on Ray Lewis... but most people seem more than happy to allow his greatness on the field to spill over into some perceived greatness of him as a person, which I think speaks as much to how we make heroes out of sports stars as it is just being about Ray Lewis specifically.

agreed, although people sure are (arbitrarily) selective about who they choose to forgive. Many of the same people that overlook Ray Lewis INTENTIONALLY MURDERING PEOPLE WITH A KNIFE still vilify Donte Stallworth for accidentally running over a jaywalker while boozy, kind of whack imo. Given his past, I don't think Ray Lewis should be an image of the NFL like he is.  I agree.
But I would like to comment on a couple of things.
OK.  The charges were dismissed against Lewis.  No prosecutor is going to make a deal with someone he can convict, especially in a case where he got no convictions.  The prosecutor made the deal because he didn't have enough to convict him.
As for settling with the families.  Legal fees are expensive. Not the mention, the dragging out of more trials and how it would have prevented him form playing again and making money.
As for the NFL fine.  I don't recall the reasoning for it but Belicheck was fined the same amount for a violation of the NFL rules.  It doesn't make him a criminal.
As for as why Welker's wife apologized (IMO).  He is a free agent.  The Patriots hold themselves out as a class organization (it is BS as far as I am concerned but it is the image they want).  Her comments were far from classy.  Her apology was damage control IMO in order to help her husband get a multi-year contract from the Pats.
As far as what Lewis did or didn't do.  It is easy to sit on a message board and call the guy a murderer.  Not one of us knows what he actually did or actually knows what happened.

I don't care what Welker's wife says personally.  It is the people that read her twitter account about football that I am most concerned with.

#1 - She has a good point

#2 - good point or not, having a wife trash talk an opponenet after a loss is in the same category as your mom running out and yelling at your friends for picking on you.

She gets it from Gisele.
except Gisele trash talked Brady's own team which still makes me laugh today.

It is the people that read her twitter account about football that I am most concerned with.

agree, especially the last line

County-level football allegiances according to Facebook data: (http://deadspin.com/5979970/facebook-data-provides-the-most-accurate-nfl-fandom-map-ever-created?post=56776842)

Just look at how many freakin Cowboys and Steelers fan there are in places that don't really have their own teams. Notice how those two teams really dug into the southern Virginia through South Carolina area, which the (relatively new) Panthers have only been partly able to chip away at.

Makes perfect sense (because of the Giants) but still funny to see the Jets owning only one county.

And how fucking pathetic is it that my geography is so piss-poor that I can't even figure out what half of the western states are.   :shakehead:

I went to community college for a semester after a 5 yr hiatus and I took a "History" class. The first day, the teacher handed out a map and asked up to label as many states as we could. There were a number of kids in the class in the single digits. So as long as you can do better than that, I'd say you're smarter than...the idiots who can only name 10 states.

They are interview Ryan and the DC from Georgia this week - plus they may interview one or two more next week. They hope to have a decision by the end of next week.

FTR, Rob Ryan would not be a horrible choice.

Yeah, lope, yesterday NPR reported it was done; I guess that was premature, as I found no confirmation today but rather, reports about the Georgia guy.

I can't stand Rob Ryan. Or, let me be more charitable: I can't stand Rob Ryan's public-facing, football-version persona. Acts like The World's Toughest Guy, is probably just trying to live vicariously through his players, takes it all too seriously and thinks he's hotter shit than he is.

Seahawks acquired WR Percy Harvin from the Vikings in exchange for undisclosed draft-pick compensation.
So much for Rick Spielman's denials. The Seahawks will open the season with 24-year-old Russell Wilson throwing to 27-year-old Sidney Rice, and 25-year-old Harvin and Golden Tate, with 27-year-old Marshawn Lynch in the backfield. Already one of the league's premier defensive teams, Seattle's offense now rivals any in football in terms of explosiveness and playmaking ability. We expect Harvin to lead Seattle in receiving, and his fantasy value should remain among the top-15 wide receivers. While the fantasy effect on Rice and Tate is unlikely to be positive, it's a gigantic plus for Wilson's.

Seahawks Offense is gonna be nasty next year.  I'm really surprised they traded their 2013 first round pick in the draft for him though.  I think the Vikings did well to get rid of a disgruntled player for a first rounder.

I have mixed feelings about this.  Harvin has been a great player for us, as was Sidney Rice.  I hope the organization chooses wisely.  Our passing game is pretty dismal, and loosing Harvin will be a blow to an already poor passing offensive.

Do we pick a QB that can actually pass or a WR that can actually catch.  In all honesty, we need both.

That's a good point but as antelope said, this draft isn't the deepest in QBs.  I'm interested to see what they decide to do as well.  The Vikings have one of the best running backs to ever play the game and are doing nothing with him in the grand scheme of things.

Lots of action in the NFL right now with the start of free agency.  Most notably, Wes Welker is now a Bronco!  That offense is gonna be ridiculous next year and you have to think this is a major hit to the Pats.

Brady recently signed for less $ than he could have so the franchise could spend more on other players - I wonder how he feels about that now that they let Welker go to Peyton's team.

end of the day, the offense with or without welker wasn't going to be their problem.  they need a defense, most notably a secondary.
they need a corner (whether it be Talib or someone else) and there are a bunch of safeties out there that can help them.
it does hurt that one of their biggest roadblocks to the super bowl did just get better by signing welker though.

If Amendola/edelman can stay healthy, I would agree with you.  That's a big IF though.  He's the only receiver ever to have 5 straight seasons of 100+ catches.  Guys like that don't come around often(obviously).  But yeah, their D has been a glaring need for years now.

everything I've heard, smith won't play this year. Far ears would come in if Sanchez is benched.
It's a multi year process. They need a whole new offense. No qb can win with those receivers.

I like the jets draft so far
