Title: May Movie Madness
Post by: cactusfan on May 02, 2012, 03:02:50 AM
surely we need something to argue over before phish starts playing again?

send me your list of 50 movies (or fewer), with a top 10 separated out (i'll weigh those more heavily), and using a system i promise will be entirely biased and unfair, i will create the Master List of 64 films in competition, and the brackets.

UncleEb, if you send me what you used for the album playoffs, i'll see if can type it up full of movies.

Rules:
fiction films only! the last thing we need is a debate over which grateful dead documentary is the best movie ever.
movies must have had a U.S. theatrical release (but may originate from any country).
movies must be features (not shorts, i.e. no shorter than about 78 minutes).

i think that's it.
send me your lists if you want to play...

I was going to bitch and say that a lot of great movies never saw a theatrical release, but then I did some quick research and found out that The Boondock Saints did have a week-long run at five theaters, so I guess it still counts.

After my test today I'll work on compiling a list.

I haven't actually seen Coven, but I'll bet there are several films that will make the bracket that I'd vote Coven over on principle alone.

bound to happen.

on another note, Lord of The Rings is three seperate movies, as are the Godfather movies, Star Wars movies, etc.
so don't vote for a whole trilogy as one movie.

sub forum is a good call, so the match-up threads don't clutter things up around here.

and yes, that's a good prediction. Empire, plus plenty of Kubrick and Coppola.

but with only six lists in so far, there's little else definitive yet...

i don't think you have to worry about this competition ending up with us arguing between Ozu's Tokyo Stories and Renoir's Rules of The Game. it's all about what YOUR favorite movies are. surely you guys have at least ten movies you love, whatever they may be. mirth has already admitted to putting in Cabin Boy, after all.

This is going to be fun...

Like RJ said, I'm also predicting 'Empire' to make it to the final four. Hell, it might even win it all. Wouldn't surprise me. I know it's going to be hard for me to vote against it. It's definitely in my top 5.

I also expect Godfather I and II to make a deep run. As stated earlier, part III never happened in my world.

Casino and Goodfellas are up there on my list as well. Not sure how those two they rank on you guys' lists though. I grew up on those movies. They were probably the first graphic, rated 'R' movies I watched.

I'll start working on my list tomorrow.

This is an AWESOME idea, btw...

you have about 2 hours from right now to send in any last lists...
Title: Re: May Movie Madness
Post by: cactusfan on May 08, 2012, 04:12:50 AM
and so it begins.
i gave this first round 6 days. it'll be shorter for subsequent rounds.

the top 10 seeds, in order:

The Godfather
The Godfather Part II
The Empire Strikes Back
Pulp Fiction
Apocalypse Now
The Big Lebowski
The Shining
Goodfellas
Full Metal Jacket
Raiders of The Lost Ark

seeds were determined by number of votes, with added weight given to top 10 movies.
any movie with only 2 or 3 votes, none in the top 10, were cut. if a movie had 3 votes with one in the top 10, it's in.
5 movies with only two votes, but one in a top 10, were randomly selected from a larger group of such movies.

otherwise, any movie with at least 4 votes made it in. 48 movies had 4 or more votes.

The Godfather and Apocalypse Now were each on 11 lists (of 16 or 17 or so). but Apocalypse only appeared in 3 top 10s. the Godfather appeared in 7 top 10s, the most of any movie. Empire Strikes Back and Godfather 2 each appeared in 6 top 10s. The Shining appeared on 10 lists, but only 2 top 10s.

Dr. Strangelove appeared on only 3 lists, but on every one it was a top 10.

Easy Rider, Reservoir Dogs, Alien and Ghostbusters all appeared on 5 lists, but in no top 10s. any movie with at least 6 votes also showed up in at least one top 10.

Try going into excel.  Do File > Print, so you get the pop-up window.  Then on the dropdown list for the printer, change it to Adobe PDF instead of your physical printer.

I changed the polls to allow people to change their votes.
What's the point of all this arguing if people can't change their mind?

I changed one vote - I was embarrassed to admit it earlier, but I will now. I voted for Airplane! at first because my eyes glanced at Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and my mind read "Leaving Las Vegas" which would definitely not get my vote. Glad I was able to change it.

How about a bracket where the eastern region is all Phish jams and the western region is all Dead jams? The final would be the best phish jam vs. the best gd jam.

Although I say the outcome of the final is a foregone conclusion, seeing the respective regions unfold would be fun.
