--- Big thanks to the kind folks here at week4paug.net for letting me host a thread on this project (most specifically guyforget for the offer) ---

-- THE SHACK PROJECT --
This is an effort to seed all existing MMW shows, and yes, preserving the original SHN/FLAC filesets. The seeding will proceed chronologically starting with the earliest known circulating fileset.

All shows listed here in SHN/FLAC will be seeded:
http://db.etree.org/duggy/mmw

These shows will be seeded as well, either by me or by one of a few other kind souls:
http://db.etree.org/duggy/mmwaccess

Shows listed here circulate in some manner. We are looking for as close to the original source as we can get so if you can help out with any of the following, we'd all appreciate it:
http://db.etree.org/duggy/mmwneeds (this list is in the process of being compiled...maybe forever?)

I can be reached here: mmwshackproject AT gmail DOT com
Or, you can PM me via this forum.

I will set up a list from which we can work in order to sort out some seeding. I've had a few people speak up and say they'd be willing to help so that's great....I'll handle this initial bit here myself and compile a list and maybe folks can sign up for shows they'd be willing to seed?

I think, considering the amount of material we're actually dealing with, it's best to break this into smaller 'projects', so we'll take '93-'96 first. I'll post of list of these shows and you guys can e-mail or PM me to let me know what shows you could seed....sound cool?

Stay tuned.....

just let me know what's up and I can seed stuff from the week4paug server.

Okay, I've got the "NEEDS" list pretty much complete...for now:
http://db.etree.org/duggy/mmwneeds

Some shows on that list have SHN links in db.etree so if you have the SHNs, PLEASE SPEAK UP! Drop me a line personally via e-mail, PM me here, or just post on this thread...your help is needed and greatly appreciated by all of us looking to just Shack-Out.....

If you have CDR copies of any of those shows, get in touch as well if you don't mind...we may have a DAT on the way but maybe not....

AND, if you have a DAT for any of them, for the love of SHACK, please contact us....
thanks

Once I get some other stuff organized, I'll post a master list here at the top of the thread of all the shows we know MMW played indicating which one's we have a copy of now, which are needed and have a known copy about, and which one's we just know they played and hope somebody might have a recording (I'm basically going to merge the lists I'm pointing people to above as well as integrating some info from http://www.mmwsetlists.com )
thanks again

My harddrive kicked out a few weeks ago, and subsequently I lost 9-18-93.

Everything else has active seeds, so I should'nt have a problem catching up on the other shows I missed.

In case anyone is actually looking over here, the project is still going...just been working on some shows...very nice '98 SBDs to be seeded ASAP, out of order for the project, but the sound is just too good to hold onto these...stay tuned....

Hello all...
I'm new to the MMW section of week4paug, been downloading phish for years now. I am looking for any must-have MMW, but particularly for two shows in MN at which I was present.

12-6-00 (Says State Theater but was really St. Catherine's college in St. Paul ??)
4-15-03 Pantages, Minneapolis, MN

If anyone can BT these for me they will be spread to at least ten people in Minneapolis who were there and must have them.  Thanks!

I don't have either of these in SHN or FLAC, both are lost I do however have the original DATs they were made from around in the attic... that might take a while..

Gotcha. Well if you aren't up for transferring them, I'm always down for that type of stuff. Drop me a line if you want me to take care of it for you - shackaholic@gmail.com.

And if you end up transferring them yourself, just email duggy and he'll take care of the rest -

As Mike mentioned just above, we are now trying to not slack off and keep The Shack Project rolling!

I have updated the first post where I will be keeping track of the projects torrents, so please take a look there for latest shows seeded, etc.

And please feel free to generate some chatter on here! I/we have neglected this board for the most part but I aim to use this resource for keeping folks posted about The Shack Project.

Enjoy the grooves!

...a variety of sources to choose from! Why not grab them all and see which one you prefer! My ears have become partial to the new AUD Matrix, but I haven't heard KC's new circulating source either...

Another great '98 gig, especially Set II...this source is sort of new to circulation as the show hasn't gotten around much...very cool gig though, and you can see my comments on the torrent page to see if that'll convince ya to grab it!

04/19/1998  Harro East Ballroom, Rochester, NY
http://db.etree.org/shn/94090
http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=517918

Oh, I'll save ya a click...here's my thoughts I just posted over on the torrent as I was listening:

"1st set favourites for me are a wacky Partido Alto and a hot Chinoiserie...

Again, the 2nd set of yet another April gig just flows and has some wonderfully intriguing Improv...not as hyper as the night before, but just as engaging I think...the Improv that moves into Chubb Sub is super smooth...Just everything has a unique touch it seems...Night Marchers is very cool, as is the Improv after it that takes us sleekly into Henduck...always nice to hear a Nocturne...and the Macha just builds and explodes into Spy Kiss, which in turn dissolves into openess and eventually silence...a VERY nice set to my ears..."
Title: I have 2 '98 shows-1 new show and 1 new source
Post by: jamnsalmon on August 30, 2008, 04:01:53 PM
10/10  Ziggy's-new show
10/15  Ritz Theatre-new source

Both shows AKG C1000's>TASCAM DAP-1 and they sound really nice.

I'm celebrating 10 years of taping as of 8/29 and starting to back up my DATs finally and I recently got a home computer for converting my shows so I'm just starting out with that.

Well, what a fantastic way to celebrate, man! If you need any help transferring, just give a shout as the project has "staff" on hand to take care of transfers if need be (actually, we have a resident transfer guru, as I like to call him). Or, if you wish to/want to transfer the DATs yourself, but maybe need assistance with tracking, again just say the word. We can arrange for you to upload FLAC files of the sets as a whole and then I can track them out.

Thanks for speaking up, man, and thanks for sharing...looking forward to hearing your recordings!

Must haves?

This show (2 sources) might be of particular interest to folks on this site ... MMW w/ Trey!

The band is INSANELY HOT right from the start -- the opening 45min of this gig is GOLD - GOLD, I tells ya! The improvisation that gets things going is sublime, and some MSMW tunes without Sco sound just as good (better? HA!) ... and then outcomes Mr. Anastasio ...

Some have mixed feelings about Trey w/MMW (or any guitarist), but I dig his sitting in ... you can hear him searching for a pocket to fill at times -- super hard to find in Miles Behind, especially if you don't know the tune, which he wouldn't considering this is one of the first performances of the tune. Trey finds himself more at home after that tune, and really rocks some grooves with MMW following him for portions of the set ... then they steer him as well ... back & forth ... groovy tunes, folks!

Nice! I was just getting into MMW when these Shack Parties went down in the fall of '96, and I live like 14hrs from NYC so that just wasn't an option for me. Would love to have caught one or more of these Parties though! Actually, I'd love to catch any NYC residency the band plays, which they do from time to time ... some day ...

Duggy, is your site hosting every single MMW source in circ?

Are you essentially complete, as I'd like to complete my collection and figured I would use your torrent listings.

That said, I'll be leaching a heck of a lot off you in the next couple weeks.

That said, maybe I should send you an HD if you have a complete collection.

Also, really looking for:

and

The Neumann FOB source (the better of the two transfers)

My collection is indeed pretty much complete with all circulating MMW, aside from a few holes in 2001-2002 for which I only ever had a CDR copy, not lossless -- Tom's got those gigs in lossless though, so I grab from him to share as needed ... but, my collection is scattered across CDRs, DVDRs, and external drives at the moment -- basically, everything I've seeded since January 2012, which are all the ID tagged filesets, these are all on a single drive. That's a smattering of 280+ shows, but certainly isn't everything ... the rest is all scattered about through years of just trying to make sure I was at least archiving, while still trying to develop my own method of doing so.

Anyway ...

I can't fill a drive for you right now -- just too busy getting my collection organized, which is partly why The Shack Project exists. I wanted to organize all my MMW properly, a standard which has shifted over the past decade, and so I've been working through all of MMW. We seeded everything from 1993-2000 before I got to tagging filesets, and really correcting setlists/tracking as I seeded.

- SHACK THOUGHTS — MSMW FALL 2006 TOUR -
I dig Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood, precisely because this is NOT MMW — if you are looking for MMW, seek out some MMW! This is MSMW. When I first heard A Go Go back in '98, I was already a fairly big MMW fan and had been listening for a few years. I really liked how seamlessly they became Scofield's band — how it sounded like the trio even though it didn't (so there's a minor amendment to my opening lines above — I still feel the trio in there, for sure, but the intent is different). However, this time around, the naming of MSMW is appropriate because Sco becomes more a part of a band rather than simply playing with a different rhythm section. The entire band is more integral to many of the songs, which is also interesting because a number of the tunes worked rather well live WITHOUT Sco when MMW played them in late '05 and early '06.

I am a fan of the MSMW sound and I love following a progression or evolution of a sound, which has been fun with these guys. The latest gigs from 2013 with Sco were more adventuresome than ever. On this Fall 2006 tour the band plays with their new sound, giving different treatments to tunes and exploring the spontaneous through those Down The Tubes improvisations, both with success and not so much, but the spirit of the exploration is what I remember loving, and each is worth that journey for various reasons.

Listen through the tour, or pick a gig or two and treat yourself to the MSMW sound ...

enjoy the grooves,
dug

... there's a couple of gigs from 2007 listed on the page too, and more MSMW to come in the future ... of course, there are tons of MMW shows available too, and more being added all the time, so check out the site! And please spread the word if you know anyone looking for grooves and more ...

While I've mentioned this before, I can't stand MMW with Scofield. And I have seen this incarnation many many times. During his solos, I find myself praying for him to stop playing so I can hear MMW. And the hate is all encompassing: his tone, his choice of phrasing, his volume, his dynamics (or I should say lack thereof).  :frustrated:

HA! Well, you probably don't want to download any of these recent torrents then ... and, you're certainly not alone -- I know many MMW fans who just don't dig MSMW at all, to the point of "hate", as you noted. I don't get it, but to each their own ... everything you mention not liking: phrasing, volume, dynamics, are all aspects I enjoy in Sco's playing with MMW. In fact, I dig Sco more here than I do in other settings I've sampled from his work -- I know some folks rave about Sco outside of this project but don't like MSMW, however, I'm the opposite I guess. I love how MMW seem to push Sco into new areas, and Sco and Medeski's recent stints with Phil & Friends over the past couple of years have seemed to make Sco even more game to play around a bit -- check out the MSMW Dec 2012 Colorado gigs and the Jam Cruise shows from 2013.

Anyway, your reply, Superfreakie, is why I wrote the SHACK THOUGHTS I included above -- I know many feel like that, but I think many folks really dig the sound because MSMW is not MMW. Some prefer MSMW and don't like MMW, which baffles me too ... MSMW are not like when Ribot or any other guest sit in with MMW, it's just a different sound to me and one that I quite enjoy ...

I've got a great show where it's just Sco and Medeski -- just the two of them -- and it's super fun too, but again, different.

Trey has played w/ MMW 3 times ... it would be VERY cool to hear that happen again, and there was almost an "every 5 years or so" pattern, but we're long overdue now ... I couldn't say Trey's my favourite guitarist to sit in w/MMW (that would be Marc Ribot), but I always dig listening to Trey in any context so check out his playing in the MMW vibe where it both works and doesn't work at times, but still cool to hear ...

I missed that 2000 show by 1 day.  We went to 12/2/00 and 12/3/00, fun shows with Oren Bloedow on guitar - maybe my favourite era of live MMW.
