-Notes-
* severe level problems during first few minutes. This part, sadly had to be removed. From the point where the audio went clear again is where it is faded in from.
** With Carl Gerhard
// - indicates there was a tape flip with some music loss.
There are parts durring the show where the mix gets a little off, and sometimes Mike is turned up a little too much causing a slight distortion on the bass. I don't think it takes away from the recording too much.

**Mastering Notes**
-Squirming Coil static at 2'40'' and 2'45'' (sounds like the cable was pulled or twisted)

-Mango static at 5'01'' (same noiseprint as the static in Coil)

Bouncin some tape thingy at 1'17'' (this sounds like a plug wiggle/twist that caused one part of the plug to dropout the signal real fast from R>L)

**I did try to correct these errors....the errors ended up being much more desireable than the processed corrections.

Thanks for these....K+....I saw more shows in 91 than any other year, at least 30 or so, and it was a great time for the band and great time to follow them.  All you had to do was show up 5 hours before the show, help them carry some lights and you got in for free.  Not that it ever cost more than $10, but in those days that was a lot of dough to me.....

Notes
The taper made level adjustments throughout the show. The most jarring of these have been normalized relative to each other, and the rest left as is.

The master cassette was paused between Suzy Greenberg and Contact, suggesting that the band left stage and then returned for a second encore. It was stopped again between Contact and Rocky Top, and started a few seconds late, which suggests that the taper was suprised when the band returned to stage a third time. Trey comments during the show how much the band liked the venue, which may explain multiple encores and why, IMHO, they played so well this night.

NO tracking/editing/alterations performed before archiving to 24-bit FLAC

That was one of the best shows I've ever seen.  Such a great vibe in that old hall.  Plus, that was a big gig for the time.  Besides the Capitol Theater, and New Years, I had only seen them in bars.  This place was packed!  The whole building was shaking, it ruled.  Me and my buddy drove from Ithaca and went back after the show.  Got home at like 7AM.  We were pacthed out of someone (maybe Redmond?) and listened to the show the whole way back.   Good times!

Fixes:
-Removed break (0.554 sec) at end of d1t09 to splice tracks together
-Tracked out set 2 using SF4.5 and shntool utility to correct sector boundaries
-Normalized show to 98% (not sets since partial 2 is not representative)

Notes:
-Date definitely correct (Trey comments about it being the day after Fish's birthday)
-Incomplete show; rest of set 2 is unknown
-No stereo separation between mics (identical waveforms)
-Below is some correspondence I received while I was in search of a more complete
source lineage.  Originally I was given AUD > DAT but became suspiious of an
AUD > DAT > Cass/0 > DAT source due to breaks approximately every 46 minutes.
However, the below seems to be the most logical explanation.

"Ben,
This was the first show that my buddy recorded on our first DAT deck which
was a Casio DA7. The battery died into the second set and I'm not sure if
that part circulates at all. I only traded it on DAT a few times. I sent a
copy to Kevin Shapiro and also to Marc Nutter in a trade. I think that is
all as far as DAT is concerned. There is a CD version that made it's way around
that contains the entire first set. It was made w/NAK 300's front of board.
After the show it was dubbed down to HIFI. DAT tapes were expensive at the
time and we did not think it was worth keeping on DAT. Boy was that a
mistake. My friend then misplaced the HIFI and we only rediscovered it a year
or so ago. I know that it is really lame that we dubbed it down to HIFI but
that was a long time ago and my how things change.
Mark Lynn
Richmond, VA"

"Ben,
I can't remember if we had anybody patched out of us at that show. If
someone was running a D6 I think it would be weird that their tape would cut
where ours did when the batteries died unless they were patched out of ours.
At the time we thought that the batteries that came with the deck were
awesome and would last longer than they did. This was like when having a DAT
deck was a huge deal. I seem to remember someone getting a board feed at one
of the shows in that venue. Their were two. The first was on 5/23/90 when it
was called The Library and then of course on 2/20/91 when they changed the
name to Kahootz. I'm surprised this tape has spread so far in so little time.
It was a big find when we found the HIFI. I would love to find the whole thing.
Let me know if you do. I hope all this helps.

Notes:

This show is not known to have circulated previously, and was missing from the official vault until provided to Kevin Shapiro (who did the A>D conversion and tracking) in mid-2004. It has often been listed as 2-24-91, which is how my tape was labelled by the person who dubbed it from Folsom and for me, and thus how I reported it circa summer 1992. However, I am confident that it was actually 2-21, as the previous night (my 20th birthday) was Arlo Guthrie at the same venue (also taped, and also uncirculated), and I recall being told twice that night that my "real present is tomorrow night, huh?" Kevin agrees that 2-21 makes more sense in the known sequence of locales in the preceding and following dates, and it is recorded in/for the vault as 2-21.

EAC reported 100% track quality on all tracks with no errors.

Increments in total time account for fractions of seconds.

Tech Notes:
You are getting this show as it appears on the tape. No mastering was performed to improve quality....there was just too much wild shit going on with the tape due to its age/condition to warrant any "real" mastering. After the tape flip, the beginning of Oh Kee Pa was destroyed...I x-faded this as best as possible...the tape was basically rotting off the backing layer, getting jammed up in my tape path. This was a one shot deal...so what you are getting here is a pure representation of what was on the tape....the only processing done was the resampling and wordlength reductions.

Date User Comment
02/12/2009 vwhitey

To drive the point home, here are some comments Marmar had on his original txt file:

*NOTE*
This tape was in really bad shape...I can not stress that enough before you listen to this. This transfer represents an effort for those who are completists out there....if you are looking for sound quality, this is definitely not for you. The tape basically disintegrated before my eyes durring the transfer. After making the first pass, the metal oxide was peeling away from the backing, flaking off, and turning to dust inside my deck. This caused many problems to be present. There are warbles and dropouts through out the set that were left as-is. This is basically for historical purposes only. Hopefully, someone who has a better source will come forth and bless us with that....until then, this is what we have.

These are the six shows from march 1991 done on a seperate soundboard.

Quote
Sbd/Aud mixes: The following shows were recorded to DAT from a separate
recording board at the shows. They are some of the highest quality Phish
tapes in existence: 4/22/90, 10/30/90, 10/31/90, 11/2/90, 11/3/90, 11/4/90,
3/13/91, 3/15/91, 3/16/91, 3/17/91, 3/22/91, 3/23/91, 4/5/92. Except for the
4/5/92 tape, they have all been fairly widely circulated.
They were done on a large recording console (not EQ) and mixed completely
separately from the board mix, rumoredly done in a truck outside the venue. The
engineer used 2 audience mics to mix in crowd/hall ambience (on most of them).
See also, PA info.

Info From Kevin Shapiro: "11/3/90 and the other tapes of the era
(10/30-11/4) were all done by Mike Grace through a separate 16 track
mixer and run direct to 2 track DAT. He basically used the same setup
in Spring 1991 too."

-NOTES-
* This show comes from an unknown analog generation cassette. There are times where the age of the tape is really prevalent. There is also some very noticable wow and flutter at times in set 1. Set 2 is much cleaner, and I do believe it to be a cassette closer to the master than set 1. There are PA problems at the start of the show, it sounds like the left channel blew out....still, this is all we got for now till the master DAT's surface.

Thanks to LawnGirl for helping verify the setlist and for REALLY wanting this show....

These are the six shows from march 1991 done on a seperate soundboard.

If you have any of these shows already, please add your files to your DL so they can be seeded...

i.e. I have 3/23/91. The same exact fileset. I stopped my Torrent, copied those SHN files into the newly created 3/23/91 folder, then restarted my Torrent. It checked itself and juped up to 19%.

The important part is that now there are two seeders for that particular part of the total seed.

If you have another part of this total seed, please verify that your source is the exact same as the one available here, and if so, please add it to your torrent. It will make things go a lot faster...

Does that make sense??? If you have questions, please post them here!

Thanks,

Terry

**Edits**
All the tracks from the EAC rip had small gaps. These were seamlessly put back together. The cut between Dog Log and Buried Alive was crossfaded as best as possible. Possum cuts in the middle, and this was faded to end the disc. I'm going to make an educated guess and say this has an analog generation or two because of the hiss and because of the cut in set 2...perfect place for a tape flip if you ask me.

Noise Reduction notes:
There was a terrible high-pitched buzz that ran from [start -> d1t08 08:23] and [d1t10 01:58 -> end]. I applied a notch filter in Cool Edit 2000 to these two passages to reduce the noise, the downside of which was a slight attenuation in the high-end such as cymbal/high-hat. I think this recording was a little heavy on the high-end anyway, so perhaps this wasn't a downside after all -- you be the judge: you can hear the notch filter kick in again at d1t10 01:58.

I also manually removed numerous pops, the exact locations of which are at the end of this info file.

*Multiple takes practicing "a dog" vocals. Several cuts. The last take is the most complete run through
HPB lists "Take The A Train" incorrectly instead of "Magilla".
There is a substantial cut in the middle of Possum, then again at the end (which was faded out).

**Mastering**
The show was running slow/flat. This was verified against my SBD Cass/3 of the same show. Using the cass/3 as a tuning guide, the show was brought into exact tune. The material was then passed through the Waves L3 to raise the gain to acceptable levels without introducing distortion.

The levels were too hot during this recording, the highs sound decent but the lows can be a bit distorted at times.
If not for the distortion this show would sound great. I figured I'd get this out there for historical purposes and
hopefully a better source will come out of it. PLEASE if you have a better source let me know, this is a smokin show
that should be heard the right way.

Great show...only about 200-300 people can fit into the cafeteria at the U of R. The boys played their butts off for those who were there. The energy is very high all night. Hopefully this will just egg whoever has the master DAT's (or a clone of them) to get off their butts and SHN it...but until that time comes, this is what we have....and with this show, I'll take what I can get! Love the comments about the car giveaway (listen to 2-14-91 for the car giveaway) at the start of set 2....gotta love hearing Fishman yelling the words "YEAH!! DOPE!!! He Probably bought dope with the money...DOPE!!"

}}Tech Notes{{
This show has gone through an unknown ammount of analog generations before this transfer. This is by no means a *great* sounding recording. The pitch was way off, more than 1 whole step. This was corrected in Wavelab using the highest quality/accuracy settings possible. Horn still sounds horribly offspeed, but rest assured that it was changed in relation to the rest of the material. The tape, as I recieved it, was in pretty bad shape. The levels of the high frequencies are almost non-audible...I contacted a few others I know that have these tapes as well, and this problem was present on everyone's copies. The high-frequency hiss was so unbearable, I had to try and remove it while retaining what was left of the audible high-frequencies. I did this to the best of my abilities. While not perfect, if listened to with the treble not jacked up all the way it is bearable... I can only imagine what the source DAT's must sound like...the seperation is wonderful even on these tapes. All work was done at the 192kHz sample rate before downsampling to 44.1kHz for final mastering for CD.

- Tweezer contained fairly extensive Heartbreaker teasing by both Trey and Mike.
- After Tweezer, the band introduced and thanked the tour crew, presenting them with a cake and customized bowling balls.

-Mastering Note-
These tapes appear to be from a Mid-Side setup. The channels were both mono, with the right channel being exactly 90 degrees out of phase. The bass was also very distorted. Upon mastering, once I had set up my mixer for mid-side decoding, the source sounded just like it should. There is still some distortion present from the low end after decoding, but it is very tolerable. -Marmar

I had about 6x of those seeds already, I added them to my Torrent and it boosted me up to about 18%.  I also have several sources that are 4/91 that are NOT listed in that Torrent...  I'll make a list and see if they need to be seeded...

Yeah...  This is how I do it:

1.  Stop the Torrent.
2.  Make sure your files match the naming scheme and MD5/FFP of the ones you want to match.
3.  Create a folder for your files, if one hasn't already been made.  Make sure to match the folder name and path of the seed you're DLing.
4.  Copy the audio files into the folder.  Copy over any that may have been started.  I skip the MD5/FFPs, texts, etc.
5.  Restart the Torrent.

Most of the time it works.  Sometimes, it doesn't.  I recently had a FLAC seed that had been tagged so they didn't match the ones being seeded and it came up with an error.

Good luck!

Terry

I'm missing three of the sources that moonmoog included in the torrent.  But, I'm hopping on the other 16 after the SHNfamily seeds have enough of a swarm.

I had about 6x of those seeds already, I added them to my Torrent and it boosted me up to about 18%.  I also have several sources that are 4/91 that are NOT listed in that Torrent...  I'll make a list and see if they need to be seeded...

Terry

Yeah I figured. I put all the shows listed in the db. I didnt seed the 1991-04-25 set I AUDS for example.

Thank you very much guys for helping with the seeding. Applaus all around!!
Im trying to set up a static ip to get more speeds but my routers customer sevice is ...well...:frustrated: Im workin on it

Oh for cryin' out loud!!!  For some reason, the whole 16gb Folder disappeared last night during the Cut/Paste to the HDD...  So I'm DLing this again...  It was going pretty good when I left the house, but any more seeding help is appreciated!!!

If you can, please hop back on this one for another day!?!

Thanks,

Terry

- Fishman's drum solo before Foam was due to a broken bass string.
- Forbin's featured guest Jamie Janover on didgeridoo.
- Fishman performed this show wearing a tight blue and red superhero costume, complete with cape and hood, that had been made for him.

NOTE:
There are moments of distortion with Mike's bass. This was more than likely caused at the time of recording, and not due to generational reasons. Sadly, till someone can provide a better source, this is what we have.

Yeah thanks for the response.  I appreciate your guys efforts.  You as well Superfreakie.  Been hooking it up at LL.  I just wasn't sure as tour kinda got in the way and I'm not even really sure how much of May 91 circulates, but I know it's easy to look in the database. Well thanks a bunch again guys for all you do.

Thanks to Dave and Caravan2001 for this great source - unfortunately it contained sector boundary errors when originally uploaded in February 2008. These were fixed with Trader's Little Helper (flac level 8) - after completion I tried to fix them again, just so it would tell me "everything looks ok, no changes needed." Also thanks to Jason Sobel for the spiritual guidance. Here is the original text file with one line added. Also the checksums are new of course, they won't match what's in the db as of right now but hopefully they will soon.

This is from one of the first Phish tapes that ever came into my possession, circa fall 1992 ... transferred from my D6 to a standalone CD burner circa 2005. There's a little hiss and a bit of tape degradation in some places, but all instruments and vocals are very clear and overall it's a pretty nice sounding recording. For some reason, Golgi is absent from the beginning of set 2. Presumably there are tape flips in there somewhere, too, but a quick scan failed to turn them up. Maybe there's a better soundboard source out there somewhere, but since there's none listed in the database, I figured I'd get this one up there, since there seems to be a lot of interest in this (classic!) show. Enjoy!

Shockra opened. With The Giant Country Horns.

The bouncers/security at The Casino Ballroom are assholes. The worst I have ever seen. The taper and I (weave) were on the guest list for this show. The bouncers at the door insisted we were not on the list. We had to find someone with a ticket to go inside and find John Paluska. Eventually, Paluska came to the door and we got in.

The Casino Ballroom has a policy that everyone must sit down at their table for all shows. And they enforce it with their steroid-crazed bouncers. You can hear them yelling for people to sit down early in the 1st set. More than 1 person got tossed out for standing/dancing. They had a small dance floor to the side of the stage. That was the only place were you could dance. The Casino Ballroom sucks.

NO tracking/editing/alterations performed before archiving to 24-bit FLAC
(except to trim silence from the ends).

CD-R>FLAC performed with EAC 0.95 prebeta 5 on a Plextor 12/20/32S using secure mode.
No errors were reported. I probably mastered the CD-Rs myself years ago but can't
remember, in any event, it doesn't seem to have any problems.

Note: This source commonly circulates as "SBD->DAT". I have audibly compared this
with the db.etree.org circulation dated 11/14/98 and although I haven't tried to
match bits, it sounds the same. I created a new distribution for three reasons:

1) This version contains source information
2) This version has the 2nd encore which is missing from the other source.
3) Notes for the other source indicate some minor problems (e.g. tiny
hiccup at the beginning of Weekapaug) that make the lineage suspicious.
This version does not have these problems.

* With happy birthday to Chris Kuroda.

@Notes@
Each CD was extracted as one long file. These files were mastered, and re-tracked in Wavelab 5.01a

^ There is a loud burst that eminates from the SBD at the start.
^^ slight moment of static (maybe 1 second long...tops)

**Notes about the second set:
The second set was riddled with dropouts all over the place...many of the dropouts weren't missing any material once they were removed. Some, however, did produce slight gaps in the music...ever so brief, but still audible...So many edits were performed that I could never list them all. I did my absolute best to try and fix everything, but alas, some were just not fixable...IMHO, the remaining errors don't really distract from the overall listening enjoyment.

One day perhaps...  It might be quicker to do the DC Hub thing...  Or do a HDD B&P...  That's how I got most of my collection...  I have yet to go through all the CDRs I've collected over the years...

thanks a million for reviving 1991 Terry, and I'm a big fan of the mega torrents... but unless I'm mistaken no September shows were seeded, any chance of getting those up at some point?  thx again

Thanks again Terry.  Quick question...9/28/91 is in the database...Was this seeded?  I didn't see it on the August-Sept. , but I could be wrong.  Honestly just trying to get clarification.  Thanks.
