Title: Yes I have a Mac, where to go from here...
Post by: whatapiper on May 23, 2009, 01:08:41 AM
im still new to my mac and want to know what everyone uses for...

compressing files (i have xACT)
download manager (Vuze)
player for shn/flac (Play and Cog)
burning/archiving (toast titanium)
organization

basically my family and work takes up most free time so everything must be efficient.   i enjoy xact just fine and vuze is great as well, where i have issues is with "play" and "cog." i dont particularly like either of those, play is just ridiculous imo and cog ok, its a pain to add/remove files it seems.   toast works great so far except an initial corrupt download when i first bought.
as for organization im lost, everything seemed easy on a pc and now i have a mess!   dragging files is a pain and renaming for itunes is a major nuisance.   any suggestions?

also, my mouse decided to stop scrolling down with the ball and will only scroll up when at the bottom of the page.  i have messed around with the mouse settings with no luck.

xACT is good
Vuze is ok, but Transmission is much simpler like uTorrent.
SHN/FLAC playback...  I don't play them back in those formats - I use toast titanium to convert to apple lossless and dump into itunes.
organization is an open-ended thing.

For moving stuff, if you can get used to spring loaded folders and using column view with "shortcuts" in the "PLACES" section, drag/drop is very easy.  It just takes getting used to.  I use both this here and cut/copy-paste at work and can do both with equivalent speed.  I must say that since I use my mac for personal stuff, I like drag/drop better.

Did you have your files in iTunes on a PC?  It'd be the same on any computer.  You can use automator if you want to batch-rename files.  It's fairly easy but won't pull the names from a table or anything.  You should be able to find something to apply tags etc around the web.  If you can explain exactly how you need to rename files, I might be able to help more.

If you are concerned with organization generally, I can explain that too.  Force yourself to use spotlight and you'll be able to find anything, but if the folder structure is weird to you, give it a bit of time.  You'll realize how much better it is.

You can look up on the web how to fix your mouse.  I actually took mine apart, but you really don't need to go that far until the other methods just don't work any more.  Plus, you have to glue it back together and taking it apart is more like breaking it apart carefully.  There are videos on youtube, but generally flip it over on a clean sheet of paper and  roll it on the ball in a circular motion...  Applying a small bit of alcohol (even vodka works) or using an air-can in conjunction with the "rubbing".

In short.
-Use a "lighter" torrent client, Transmission
-FYI, even though I also use toast titanium, you can burn right in the finder with a right click and select "new burn folder" for archival and in iTunes by creating a playlist for audio and clicking burn.  Again, I still prefer toast because I'm used to it and use it for other things too.
-Column view is tits.  You can drag any folder to the "PLACES" section on the left and get to it easily.
-Utilize spring loaded folders with drag/drop.  You can adjust the delay in finder prefs.
-Use spotlight (cmd-space).  I even use it to launch apps that I don't keep in the dock.  It's really easy for that and finds stuff easily too.
-The feature that I think is the biggest win on a mac that you never hear about is quickview.  For most files, you can single click on the file, then hit the spacebar and the file is displayed in a window.  This works great with pics, text, and especially if you want to just hear a quick sample of a music file without opening an app - unfortunately it won't work with shn/flac but whatever.

Nice, i had not heard of transmission, thanks for all the information, again, it is just a matter of getting used to.   over time i hope to get everything in working order and organized so i can participate again with projects.   i had to bail years ago for many reasons and have a lot of holes in my archives.   anyway, thanks again, it may take me a while but i will get going eventually and thank you all for the support.

Good info here. I'm currently a PC user, and HATE it! I'd like to switch to a mac, if I can find the funds. Any of you recently make the switch? If so, I'd like to get your thoughts... ie. learning a new system, transferring PC files to Mac and so forth. I have a ton of photography software on my PC, do I have to reacquire the programs? Would you recommend the switch? Input is appreciated.

i would recommend the switch in a heart beat... without a shadow of a doubt.

unfortunately you would have to re acquire all your software.

moving files from pc>mac is fairly straight forward, and not terribly difficult.  and apple does provide an easy to use way to do that

My bro just built a Hackintosh for $475 (which includes 2TB).  He used an old G4 case, but he's overclocking a chip (can't remember which) and finishing up working out bugs like adding drivers for the vid-card etc.  He has stuff like it won't sleep, can't change resolution, etc but working them out.  As soon as he hooks it up, I'm going to look into doing the same with his plans.

I looked at some speed tests and even my "G5 powerhouse" is no match for the mini.  This thing is only 5 years old!  It still works IMO better/faster than my dual processor Dell at work.  Meaning, you can get something really good from Apple or made yourself for well under 1K.

I definitely recommend the switch, you just need the time to get figure it all out.  Transferring is painless unless you don't have a lot of externals like myself.   I still have way too much on my PC to transfer over.   My mac only has a 230 gig HD and i have one external with 100.  not even close to enough, i had four HD on my PC and had a total of close to 1k.   Any good externals out there suitable for a mac? i really need more memory!

I'd probably look into setting the pc up as a closet server of some sort, instead of transferring all the files over

Any drive is good for a mac, just has to be formatted to HFS+.  You could serve files from your pc or just get one new drive, same size or larger than your biggest  and make a bunch o transfers.

format new drive(larger than largest), transfer from pc drive number 1(largest)
erase and reformat pc drive 1, transfer to that from pc drive 2(next largest)
erase and reformat pc drive 2, transfer to that from pc drive 3(third largest)
etc.

That'd create some headspace too.

The 1TB drives are under $100, so that'd cover a lot (maybe everything) and then any one of the free'd up drives could be reformatted for additional data.

Looks like I'm going to be making the switch from PC to Apple soon than anticipated... my PC keeps freezing or restarting on me every half hour or so. :x A couple of questions for the Mac savvy...

I'm looking at getting the new 13 inch MacBook Pro.  I'd rather not sell out $1500 for the 250 GB/4 GB ram model. Think about the 2 GB ram and upgrading the 160 GB Hard Drive to the 250 GB HD. Saving me $250. Thoughts?

I also have a TON of pics and mp3 on my PC that I'd like keep but do not want to clog up the Mac HD with this stuff. Can I transfer them to an external HD and still be able to access them with the Mac? I've looked into external HD's already and noticed that some of them are formatted for Macs and some are not. Any recommendations on an external HD that will work with both?

AppleCare Protection Plan? I usual steer clear of extended warrenties. They're basically worthless IMO, but I'm thinking about purchasing this one mainly because I DL everything for software to music (can't afford $700+ for CS4!) and would like to have some "insurance".

Airport Express with AirTunes. Anyone use one of these? Sounds awesome but some people comment on it cutting out occasionally. Hows the sound quality?

replies or PM's are greatly apprecited. Also, is there a "mac4n00bs.com" someone could point me to?

just format whatever external drive you buy in unix file system, hfs or fat, and your mac will totally be able to access that shit. the mac4noobz sites are full of whiny douche-farts and self-important ass-dweebs though, be careful... but you can find many (just google macrumors and/or mac os x hints, also the apple.com discussion forums are extremely active). i'd be more specific but i still haven't had my caffeine for the day... feel free to p.m. with any questions though, i have mac(s), used to manage an all mac office network and well... when i'm awake, i like this sort of stuff.

yes, to all your questions ;)

but seriously, airtunes kicks ass... i use this everyday at my house to stream to 3 different sets of speakers throughout the house, and dont have issues... there were issues a while back but apple has upgraded the software and all is good now.

as for the hardware... i'd say get more RAM (4GB) and skip the bigger HD since it sounds like you'll be getting an external for your music and images.  you'll see a bigger increase in speed an efficiency by getting the RAM instead of the larger HD.

as for HDs... Buy whatever HD you'd like, and just reformat it to HFS+ from your mac.

congrats and welcome to the club!

Thanks haleakalari and jedifunk. Your input is appreciated. I think you're right with the 4GB Ram over the HD. Question though, I format the ExHD to HFS+ before I add files to it on my PC correct? Otherwise I'd lose the stuff I put on it right.
Title: Re: Yes I have a Mac, where to go from here...
Post by: haleakalari on June 09, 2009, 01:37:33 PM
correct. format the drive before before you transfer files to it from your pc. format it in windows though, as fat32 for now. then when you have everything moved over to your mac, it's your choice what format you'd like to use permanently on the external drive.

i personally prefer unix file system, but if you don't plan on setting up any linux boxes anytime soon, hfs is a safe bet (especially if you're ditching your windows box after you've completely migrated). if you're planning on using the drive with both mac and windows boxes, fat is not a bad choice, except you can't write files over 4gb large to a fat drive (at-least with fat32) if you don't work with huge files though leave your drive formatted with fat, it's a safe choice for compatibility.

basically, if you're looking for native read/write support in os x *and* windows, stick with the fat format. if you're only concerned about mac/unix-like os compatibility though, unix file system and hfs are fine.

p.s. caffeine is kicking in ;]

i would say format to HFS+ before the migration. and use macdrive on windows to make the drive writeable by windows.  that way there's no chance of losing data in a reformat after the transfer.

if you have more questions i'd be happy to help you out.  and i could probably provide a copy of macdrive too

you sly fox. i haven't touched my windows machine in years. but out of curiosity, is macdrive more reliable on windows than the os x equivalent(s) alternative ntfs drivers (ntfs-3g etc...) are on a mac?

i've never had good luck with the ntfs drivers for os x, which is why i format any external drives that i need to use with windows and os x (or linux) with fat. basically, is the situation for read/write support with hfs drives on windows, better than the situation with ntfs drives on os x?

i have two airport express setups and use airtunes on both. the software upgrade cured all my ills; just make sure the airport has the latest firmware on it.

actually i've not used ntfs-3g... but have had good success with macfuse in the past.

my philosophy is that since 99% of my computing is done on my mac (not including at work), i should set up my system and workflow to be fully mac compatible.

i employ different techniques / softwares where necessary, including macfuse in some cases.  although i'd rather use something like macdrive on the PC than mess with my perfect mac workflow.

ahh. we have somewhat different approaches then. when i'm working for someone else, setting up a network or doing something like that, i ad-lib, i'll resort to using alternative drivers [like macfuse] and things of the sort. but on my personal machines, because i have so much spare electronics at home, i basically use specific devices for specific tasks rather than mucking around with extra applications or system extensions etc... so i have a few drives formatted fat, a few ufs, one hfs, and one ntfs. i only resort to using 3rd party apps to overcome compatibility issues when the situation is dire or i've run out of options (for instance, the only way i can fully utilize my messagepad 2000 with my macbook pro, is through a usb<->serial adapter and an accompanying system extension. or the only way i can reliably play ogg, flac and shorten files etc... is through using a third party application like cog). but if something can possibly be done with even the most byzantine set-up of bash scripts, apple scripts and event listeners, i'll do that rather than resort to an entire application. a lot of it probably has to do with my compulsion to tinker though ;]

Highlight all the songs in the iTunes playlist, then drag and drop the artwork to the artwork area in the lower left. This works great when you want the album cover for CD or DLs that don't come with the digital artwork. I also make artwork for my own mixes and add it this way. Hope this helps.

so im having performance issues, seems like just most applications take too long to get going, like my mac cant multi task.   i saw jedi wrote something about more ram but is that the only way to boost performance?

also, those who do listen to flac files what player do you use?  cog doesnt work and play is weak, dragging folders never works and there is no option to "add files."

increasing RAM is the easiest and fastest and most sure way to increase performance of a computer... if you have too little your whole system can be bogged down by this

+1 for the RAM suggestion. It's cheap enough these days that there's no reason to be running less than 4GB, especially if you multitask a lot and play around with uncompressed media files.

The other way is to upgrade the hard drive. Almost without exception, it's the slowest component on any contemporary notebook or desktop. If you can spare the cash, an SSD will cut down application load times dramatically. The best bet is (still) probably the Intel X-25M. My ideal setup is a small-medium sized SSD (or a large one if money really is no object) for the OS and Apps and a large external drive for media, connected by Firewire or eSata.

There's a package out there at what.cd that contains a bunch of mac utilities, players, EAC stuff, etc.

They're down for maintenance but it's a nice comprehensive list with descriptions and details.  I'll post those descriptions of each if it's back up and nobody else has by then.

I've kind of maxed out on ram myself, but even my load times on this G5 aren't terrible.  Do you have snow leopard?  That's supposed to be a big deal.  But I'll agree that ram is the simplest addition to improve your speeds.

i dont have leopard, im still using what came in teh box, 1gb ram :| so no wonder eh?

money is def an issue, Im waiting for YNAB 3 to come out to get my shit together, im mad in debt but make enough money not to be so go figure.   im trying to make either 8, MSG, or Miami come true so i cant go crazy here, YNAB is essential based on the reviews i have read.

so whats the cheapest way to boost, leopard only costs what $29?  does that come with more ram? i will check it out, otherwise maybe just the ram.  i have a tb external that all my music goes on that isnt archived to dvd.   only wav files and flacs waiting to transfer sit on the mac drive....

ups for all, thanks for the time

I am currently having a similar issue.  My iMac G5 is just about 5 years old.  I have an appointment at the Apple Store on Wed to try and figure out the issue. I upgraded RAM memory to 2 Gig and it helped for a while.  The first idea was to start from scratch, reboot all programs and see if that works.  We'll see.
I also think there are some issues with my power source.  If I put it to sleep it won't fire back up.  I had this issue before but it was still under Apple Care warranty and there was a recall on the part.  We'll see about how much $it might cost on Wed.  It might be time for an upgrade for mr. minor!

If you don't already have leopard, I don't think you can get snow leopard for $29.  I'm assuming you have an intel mac.

The cheapest really is ram.

Here are some utilities, Vox looks cool.

Ripping / Transcoding

X Lossless Decoder (XLD)

X Lossless Decoder (XLD) is a tool for Mac OS X that is able to decode/convert/play various 'lossless' audio files. The supported audio files can be split into tracks with a cue sheet when decoding. XLD is What.CD's recommended CD ripping software for Mac OS X.

XLD supports the following formats:

FLAC

Monkey's Audio

Wavpack

TTA

Apple Lossless

AIFF, WAV

Max

Max is an application for creating high-quality audio files in various formats, from compact discs or files.

When extracting audio from compact discs, Max offers the maximum in flexibility to ensure the true sound of your CD is faithfully extracted. For pristine discs, Max offers a high-speed ripper with no error correction. For damaged discs, Max can either use its built-in comparison ripper (for drives that cache audio) or the error-correcting power of cdparanoia.

Once the audio is extracted, Max can generate audio in over 20 compressed and uncompressed formats including MP3, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, AAC, Apple Lossless, Monkey's Audio, WavPack, Speex, AIFF, and WAVE.

Spectral Analysis / File Analysis

Audacity

Audacity is a digital audio editor and recording application. Audacity is cross-platform and is available for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and BSD.

Some of Audacity's features include:

Importing and exporting WAV, AIFF, MP3 (via the LAME encoder, downloaded separately), Ogg Vorbis, all file formats supported by libsndfile library

Version 1.3.2 also supports Free Lossless Audio Codec (FLAC)

Recording and playing sounds

Editing via Cut, Copy, Paste (with unlimited Undo)

Multi-track mixing

A large array of digital effects and plug-ins. Additional effects can be written with Nyquist

Amplitude envelope editing

Noise removal

Support for multi-channel modes with sampling rates up to 96 kHz with 24 bits per sample

The ability to make precise adjustments to the audio's speed while maintaining pitch (Audacity calls it changing tempo), in order to synchronize it with video, run for the right length of time, etc.

The ability to change the audio's pitch without changing the speed.

Contains major features of modern multi-track audio software [7] including navigation controls, zoom and single track edit, project pane and XY project navigation, non-destructive and destructive effect processing, audio file manipulation (cut, copy, paste)

Converting cassette tapes or records into digital tracks by automatically splitting one wav (or the other supported types) track into multiple tracks based on silences in the track and the export multiple option.

MediaInfo

MediaInfo supplies technical and tag information about a video or audio file.
It is free software (free of charge and free access to source code: GPL or LGPL license).

What information can I get from MediaInfo?

General: title, author, director, album, track number, date, duration...

Video: codec, aspect, fps, bitrate...

Audio: codec, sample rate, channels, language, bitrate...

Text: language of subtitle

Chapters: number of chapters, list of chapters

What format (container) does MediaInfo support?

Video: MKV, OGM, AVI, DivX, WMV, QuickTime, Real, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DVD (VOB)...

Codecs: DivX, XviD, MSMPEG4, ASP, H.264, AVC...)

Audio: OGG, MP3, WAV, RA, AC3, DTS, AAC, M4A, AU, AIFF...

Subtitles: SRT, SSA, ASS, SAMI...

Media Player

Songbird

Songbird is a free and open source software audio player and web browser founded by Rob Lord and developed by Pioneers of the Inevitable (with members who previously developed for both Winamp and the Yahoo! Music Engine), with a stated mission "to incubate Songbird, the first Web player, to catalyze and champion a diverse, open Media Web."

Songbird employs Mozilla's XULRunner platform, and is thus capable of running on Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac OS X, Solaris and Linux. Songbird utilizes the GStreamer media framework. Apple iPhones, iPod Touch and Microsoft Zune devices are not yet supported.

Vox

Vox is a little and simple music player for Mac OS X with support for many file types, including FLAC, MP3, AAC, Musepack, Monkey's Audio, OGG Vorbis, Apple Lossless, AIFF, WAV, IT, MOD, XM, Games Music and many others. Includes numerous effects like Equalizer, Reverb, Time Stretch, Pitch Shift, Echo. Moreover, all supported files can be exported to MP3, AAC, WAV and other formats with enabled effects.

VLC Media Player

VLC media player is a highly portable multimedia player and multimedia framework capable of reading most audio and video formats (MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264, DivX, MPEG-1, mp3, ogg, aac ...) as well as DVDs, Audio CDs VCDs, and various streaming protocols.

Tagging / File Management

Tag

Tag is a metadata editor for FLAC, Ogg Vorbis, Monkey's Audio and WavPack files.

Tag has an intuitive interface that simplifies common editing tasks while also allowing direct manipulation of tags. Tags can be dragged between files, or Tag can even add all the tags contained in one file to another in one fell swoop.

For files with incomplete or missing metadata, Tag can guess tag values by matching the filename to a user-defined pattern. Alternatively, Tag can rename files by substituting tag values into a user-defined pattern.

Need to make many parallel changes? No problem! Tag can edit multiple files simultaneously, eliminating repetition and saving time.

For advanced users Tag features customizable mappings that allow you to specify which tags are mapped to the various fields in the user interface.

PicardTagger

Picard is the next generation MusicBrainz tagging application. This new tagging concept is album oriented, as opposed to track/file oriented like the ClassicTagger. Picard is written in Python, which is a cross-platform language, and makes use of cross-platform libraries - this allows the same code to run both on Windows, Linux and Mac OS X.

Dnuos

Dnuos is a console program that creates lists of music collections, based on directory structure.

The list format is completely customizable and can be plain text or HTML.

Dnuos supports MP3, AAC, Musepack, Ogg Vorbis, and FLAC audio files. Quality profile detection is also supported, including LAME quality preset information.

Audio file information is saved to disk after a list is made for the first time, making subsequent lists much faster to generate. Only audio files and directories that have been changed since the last list was made are analyzed.

See wiki.php?action=article&id=61 for information on using Dnuos.

Internet Relay Chat (IRC)

Colloquy

Traditionally, chat clients on the Mac have been anything but glamorous. Colloquy is an advanced IRC, SILC & ICB client which aims to fill this void. By adhering to Mac OS X interface conventions, Colloquy has the look and feel of a quality Mac application.

X-Chat Aqua

X-Chat Aqua is X-Chat with an Aqua interface for Mac OS X. X-Chat Aqua uses the IRC engine from X-Chat, and is designed to look and feel like the GTK+ front end.

Wow, thanks everyone! This weekend I will play around a bit. I asked apple care about more ram and they told me it would cost 200 to instal on site. He said I could also do it myself for a fraction of the cost.    How difficult would it be to do myself? I'm assuming I have to take part of the monitor apart

I upgraded to 2G of RAM and did it myself and it cost me around $120 for 2 1G RAM sticks (iirc as it was earlier this summer).  Super easy to do on your own, though.

That's some expensive memory. I took my notebook from 1G to 4G by purchasing 2 2GB sticks from newegg.com. Cost was under $70.

OK - this may be a dumb one, but I've got to move a lot of files over to an accessory drive, then to the mac, etc - so
before you disconnect something from a pc, you are supposed to click "OK to remove hardware".
does Mac have anything like that or do you just pull the plug out. I seem to remember that you could eject a floppy (remember those) by putting it in the trash.
thanks again

It's always best to eject/unmount drive before you unplug....You can either drag the icon into the trash (which will then show up as the 'eject' symbol) or highlight the icon and hit command-e (that's what I do).....

My 1st one on one class is Monday, but till then-
when you d/l apps, like burn, etc, do you leave them on your desktop or copy into the applications folder.
VLC has a whole folder, with the VLC icon inside. what do you do with that?

from the Audacity page--
QuoteInside your Applications folder, create a folder called "Audacity"
Double-click the downloaded .dmg to mount it
Option-drag the whole of the .dmg contents (not the .dmg itself) into the "Audacity" folder you created
Double-click the Audacity icon inside the "Audacity" folder to launch the program

what do they mean by .dmg? I tried to put the Audacity 1.2.5 folder (what I got from the d/l) into the Audacity folder I created but couldn't.

thanks

edit-figured out what they meant at the audacity site and what to do with the VLC icon.

you guys are probably sick of my questions already, but here's one more.
has anyone taken an ipod they used on a pc, restored it, and used it on a Mac? The Apple web site says that they don't "support" that because ipod for windows uses FAT 32. the guy in the store said it shouldn't be a problem, but I found out the hard way that they sometimes lie. I don't want to wipe out my entire ipod unless I'm relatively sure I can get it back.

Actually, got everything up and running. I transferred my old itunes from my accessory drive and dvds; it was easier to do than they told me. Got a fair # of applications d/l and have run most of my old hardware already (camera, printer, etc). The old ipod is being loaded, got a new one for my wife (free offer when purchasing with the educational discount  :rawk:), and I'm getting this thing figured out. The one on one class was good to learn some shortcuts and quick ways to do things.
Right now life is good.

Thanks for your help, +k to everyone on this thread

Well the top hit on my search returned this...  This sounds like it to me.  So you'll insert the disc in your drive and it'll look like X number of discs on your desktop(mac) when you mount it.  haha.

Drag the item or items you wish to burn into a folder.
Open Disk Copy (/Applications/Utilities/).
Drag the folder onto the Disk Copy window. The Image Folder dialog appears.
Choose a location for the image file using the Where pop-up menu. For simplicity, you may choose Desktop.
Click Save. Wait for the image to be finished.
Select Burn Image from the File menu. The image file should not be mounted.
In the navigation dialog that appears, select the image you just created, then click Burn. If you have not already inserted a blank disc, you will be prompted to do so now.
In the Burn Disc window, click the disclosure triangle.
Select the checkbox for "Allow additional burns".

what do you  use for backing up?
I have a friend who uses both Super Duper and Time machine.
He says that TM is great if you want to recover deleted info but harder to restore a HD in case of a crash, so he also backs up weekly with Super Duper, which apparently restores HD easily and quickly

thoughts?

slslbs, do you mean add to it or just read a multisession disc?  I think the mac os reads multisession discs just fine and believe that toast would as well, no matter where created.  Now adding to them might be another story, or it might not, maybe it's more dependent on the burner and software and regulations and you can add to any multisession disc because they're all burned the same.

just trying to read them. when I put in a multi-session disc, it just reads the initial session. from what I was able to google, that is about all you can do - the possible exception is with Toast. I've read both that Toast can, and cannot, open up an entire multisession disc.

I don't think I've had a problem but I can't say whether I've had a multisession disc.  I wonder if it's toast that creates it, that toast can read it but otherwise no...  If I'm bored I can try to create one and read it, but being created on the mac, I'm sure the mac can read it.

what kind of games are they?  Worst case, save the prefs file (or find the file that holds your position in the game) and save that off to the side before you reinstall the game.  If it doesn't use an installer, maybe look for an update online.  I'd do that first.

what's the best way to rip cds with Mac?
The simplest seems importing into itunes with either aiff or wav, and as a bonus, it even tags the files. I wasn't sure how "accurate" a rip itunes does.

I tried last night also with xact but it was taking a long, long time.

Good question, I use iTunes but I'd bet there is a better option.

Great to hear.  To pick your brain, what is the diff between the regular MacBook and the Pro?  I heard it's just the video card, which is mainly useful for gaming, etc.  I'm thinking I may be just as well off with the regular Mac.

About the accuracy issue -- I assume this would mostly be connected to the physical condition of the disc, and your program's ability to rip through that. iTunes has "error correction" but it's unclear what exactly this means. Other programs I've used (XLD?) have more complex sets of preferences and also error reporting.

But I assume if you have a pristine disc and your hardware is functioning properly, iTunes or any quality program should be able to rip the digital data fully and accurately based on the instructions in the software -- where/why/how would the process break down at that point?

The discussions I've been able to find online about CD ripping accuracy have been incomplete at best.

For a little while I was having a fair bit of trouble ripping via iTunes, especially with my Live Phish discs, and when I tried in another program, XLD I think, I had problems with the same tracks. More recently iTunes has been able to breeze its way through discs that I might have thought would give it trouble, based on scratches and spots on the surface. Mind you, I haven't listened to all the music yet to see how exactly it sounds coming off the computer.

Actually just found this easy comparison on the differences so I can decide from there I guess.

If you want to do music and photography, having a built in sd reader and FW800 is probably worthwhile as it will give you options. Especially if you want to record directly to an external hdd.

Something to consider, when pricing is that you don't want to pay for extra RAM as it's cheaper and not hard to do it yourself. Same for the hdd (especially if you plan on using externals.) Processor, however, is worth spending a dime on. Also, if you or you wife is a student you can probably get the educational discount.

Same here. Sometimes it would rip like shit and just freeze up. But now it works fine. So i don't know whats up with it. But yeah the LP Discs were a bitch and i don't know why, LP vol 3 would never go on until one day it just decided to work.

after bumping up from 1 gig ram to 4 and storing all large files on externals I have pretty much zero performance issues

it def helps me to "eject" externals not in use, at first i would have 3 or 4 drives plugged in and randomly they would "wake up", slowing down whatever I was doing.

RJ, last month I started a secret savings as well for a mac book pro, it may take a while but i hope to have enough by this summer.

Definitely, whenever my external (backup) drives wake up, it throws a snag in things, but this is temporary and from what I can tell it doesn't affect performance beyond those moments when the drive is coming back to life. Since we're talking (automatic) Time Machine drives here I leave it plugged in to go to work at its will.

Was looking at this thread and forgot to thank you guys for the advice on the Macbook Pro.  Best purchase I've made in a long time.  I grabbed a terabyte external drive as well.  The only problem with this is using the docs stored on there.  I seem to have to move them one folder at a time to whatever app I want to use (ie. Photoshop).  And should I set up the time machine backup or is it a waste of time?

I guess the point of me getting the ext HD was to save space on my Mac HD.  But, for example, my wife created a calendar for a Christmas present that referenced the pics I had on the ext HD, we had to move each pic over before it could create the calendar.  I may just be doing something wrong and it's not the end of the world, just a pain.

I keep photos on the local drive, they don't take up a huge amount of space.

I'm sure you can tell iPhoto to store your photos on the external - perhaps this is what you should be doing.

I'm not sure how big your internal HD is -- 180, 250? If you want to use your external drive for data backups (you should) and extra storage, here's what you can do if your internal HD is small enough:

Partition it three ways. Two partitions are the same size as your internal, the third is whatever's left over (assuming this leaves you with enough space). One partition is used for your Time Machine backups. The other same-sized one is reserved to restore your TM backup onto in the case of drive failure. This is simply to allow you to restore the drive and get back to work before you replace the dead internal HD. (You would start up the laptop from the system disc and from there restore the TM backup, then use that new bootable drive as your startup drive on the Mac.) The third partition you can freely use for extra storage. (You can also use the second partition for extra storage, but you will write over it when you restore the TM backup there.)

Follow all that?

I don't see much purpose in partitioning an external drive, if it dies, it's dead - the fact that you had it partitioned won't make a difference.

It's not really useful for your TM backups to be the same size as your internal HD, and then reserving space on an external to restore your TM backup.... what?

I'm talking about when the internal HD dies, not the external. Partitioning it will allow you to create a bootable drive on that same external (http://newmacuser.com/use-time-machine-to-create-a-bootable-backup/) so you can get right back to work (you cannot boot from a TM backup). That would be the only reason to do it.

Why not just boot from the OS discs, and restore from the TM backup?

That's what I'm talking about.

Your internal HD dies. You have a TM backup but you can't boot from it. Nor can you restore a TM backup onto itself. So you start up from the discs and restore the TM backup onto another partition on your external drive.

Again, this is if you don't want to have to wait until you've replaced the dead internal HD.
Title: Re: Yes I have a Mac, where to go from here...

Gotcha.  I would just replace the internal HDD and restore to that - but if you were unable to do that, and you didn't have any other external drives available, your solution makes sense.

I'm having trouble compressing and decompressing files on my mac.  What program are you using currently?  I'm running Mac OSX 10.5.8

I use Archive Utility (I believe this is a system utility) for .zip and Stuffit Expander for .rar. I've not had any problems.

I should have specified but I'm talking audio files. Like .flac, apple lossless, wmv, mp3,....

My biggest problem so far with the Mac is trying to play downloaded vids.  MP4 and AVI files won't seem to play in quicktime, not sure what I should be using.
\

try VLC.

I had a problem with avi files also. I think I d/l a plug-in for QT. I'll check when I get home.
I embedded some vids (.avi I think) that were derived from an app at work onto slides in keynote and had a problem running. I d/l  ffmpegx and they ran.

either way, I would get VLC

You've been getting some bad advice. The program you want is XLD.

I thought you meant unzipping files as opposed to decoding.

mattstick is right, XLD

I don't remember if XLD decodes shn. If not, you need cog (it will play shn directly, which VLC won't).
personally, I have XACT, XLD, cog, and VLC. It might be redundant but I use each for a specific task, so I don't need to go and change preferences, etc when I want to do something - just add files, and start.

here's a post from earlier this thread, which I found useful:

re: XLD and .shn files - in my experience, it decodes some shnz and some shnz it does not.  I think the website said Shorten support was 'experimental'.  But that's what I use all the time now - I think I've used xACT only once or twice in the last year and that was why.

Nobody uses MacAmp Lite X for their lossless player anymore?

have you checked out the latest xACT?  it now does FLAC > Apple Lossless i believe, as well as lossy AAC. i've never really used XLD.

oh, and i no longer use MacAmp Lite, but had for many many years... had all kinds of plugins and themes for it, and it really did kick ass but had a nasty memory leak bug which is why i moved over to Cog - just get the nightly version of Cog and you'll be all set, it does Flac & SHN pretty damn well.

XLD has an option to automatically add the converted files to iTunes - I only have xACT installed to convert some early SHN files.

I'm fine doing the import myself.

I'm happy to hear other reasons that XLD might trump xACT, though.

I've used XLD for ripping CDs to flac but that's about it.  XACT always had that fairly simple UI.  Still does and now the ability to go straight to ALAC (even for 24bit files), I don't see a need for anything else.  To me XLD may be more professional, but in the end they both perform the same task.

best to upload them to MobileMe or YouTube and then embed them here*

I pretty much only use iMovie to edit out commercials in TV shows I record through my EyeTV.

This EYE-TV thing is pretty cool, my HD Antenna is hooked up via coax, and it connects to my Macbook via USB.
Records live TV, and when it's done it exports it to iTunes, where I access and watch it via the AppleTV, nicely tagged and everything.
It also allows me to watch live TV on my iPad/iPhone - as well as things I've recorded.  I can also access the EyeTV with my iPhone while I'm away from the house and schedule recordings.

Lately I've started having issues with Xact and Cog, both in regard to shn files.   With Cog my only issue is the ability to "fast forward" or "rewind" shn files.  I'd say 75% of the time I have to listen in real time.

With Xact lately I can't convert shn to wav or any other format for that matter, I receive an error code.

Anyone else ever have issues?  Any other shn playback out there?

mac os 10.6.7, google chrome 11.0.697
I've been getting repeated "pop - unders" (windows that appear on my desktop when I close google chrome) for "mac clean up", which obviously seems like a scam.
do I have some kind of malware on my mac?

I cleared the browsing data from the past 4 weeks. Anything else i should do?

edit to add- last week, I got a tab on google for a virus scan program that automatically started "scanning" by drive and came up with a number of infections. trouble is, the files it was scanning were winword and other obvious pc type files.

thanks

My MacBook has recently been slowing down.  In my house my mac is the only laptop that connects wirelessly so between 2 other room-mates and Lifeboy who has been crashed on my couch for a little over 2 weeks until he gets back on his feet(wook, jk) it is the only computer.  I am completely fine with sharing my computer with everybody, they both have been life long friends of mine and adhere to my 'no download' policy.  Recently though I have been experiencing a bit of delay in my machine and questionable behavior.  Can anybody recommend any malware/spyware defense and/or an anti-virus?

Thanks,

There are two ways to approach this.

1. you can stay at my house any night as long as you either looked for a job or another place to live during that day.
2. you can rent a room at my house whenever you need. The first month's rent will be $500, the second month will be $5000.

What have you heard about it?  I did a little research today and it seems somewhat legit, I just hate to spend $30 when I don't need to.  I also can't find anything on the system requirements for it, I have little room left on my HD and don't want to be running a program with a large impact on my system.

The HD on my Mac holds 300 gig and if I bring it down to anything close to 50 gigs of free space it starts getting very slow even with 4 gb ram.  I spent some time last night cleaning up to get it closer to 100 gb free and it improved drastically.

Anyone try the Mackeeper 15 day free trial?  If free I would use again

Anyone wanting a virus scan should give that a try

So, late last year I finally broke down and got an iMac and haven't looked back. I love everything about it, but lately I've noticed some pretty severe performance issues on both browsers (Safari and Chrome). I don't think it's my modem/router settings because the wifi is still working fine. Torrents are still up/downloading quickly but if I download from megaupload or sendspace or whatever it takes a while. Any ideas on how to address this? Do you guys use MacKeeper or anything like that? Any other tips that might help? Thanks in advance, from MacN00b.

how are you doing on disk space?  to keep OS X running at its peak, they recommend keeping 10-15% of your drive's total space empty, so swap files and the like have room to work.  if you have less than that, you're going to see significant performance hits.

also, i find that running an app like DiskWarrior (not free) can fix up some issues with your hard drive that will also significantly help speed things up.

you can also check out Onyx, which is free and can clear your cache and other system settings that may give you a boost.

Thanks. I'll take a look when I get home but last time I checked I think was only using ~300MB on a 1TB. I keep all my music on externals so most of that is pictures and videos. But it's been a while so I'll check it out tonight.

If you get the iMac, can you use the built-in monitor as a monitor for another laptop?

That's an awfully big and nice display to live and die with the computer it houses.

I think you can do it (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3924#), but sounds like maybe the iMac needs to be functioning, which wouldn't help in the scenario PG describes.

That actually could work - but I'd still rather an external display and a KVM switch between my work computer and my mac.

Yeah, I meant it wouldn't be helpful for extending the life of an irreparably busted iMac that still has a functioning display. Might be outta luck in such a scenario.

May need to jump on it, seems worth it just to get audio from the desktop through a receiver. A $4.99 cable would be nice too...

that would work fine if you don't need to be wireless.

the downside is that all the sounds you computer makes (the whoosh from sent emails) gets sent over your speakers.
I hooked up aiprort express to my receiver and use airplay (when not in itunes) to get the music over.

Thanks, I've been wanting to get airport express for a whole now, same price as Apple TV however.  Can Apple TV be used as a wifi hub like airport?

Yes, but it only has digi out and hdmi for audio, airport has 1/8".

You could buy a RaspberryPi and set up XBMC to make it an Airplay device for ~ $40. It has an 1/8" output, but I haven't figured out how to set it up wirelessly.

You know you can use that Zona send unit to connect to your receiver, you just need a corresponding receive unit connected to any line level input.

Hit me up if you want one, probably around $50.

Does anybody use a program that's similar to Quick Books?  I'm looking for a program to help manage some finances and keep a running record of what/where/how I'm spending.  Quick Books comes in at like $200 though, kind of a turnoff.

Zimbra, check out mint.com.  It's a website that I believe does everything you're looking for, and it's free.  Pretty much like Ed just did, but it also makes pie graphs of the answers.

mint.com looks pretty sweet.  I wonder if there's a way to track on your phone as well.  I think if I could record outflows immediately after they happened (ie. leaving a restaurant/bar) it would be more beneficial to me.  Simply cause I would keep it up to date.

I know there's an android app, I assume there's an iphone one too.  By the way, you can save your bank/cc account info so Mint automatically imports purchases/deposits, etc.

I actually don't use the site currently, but I tried it in the past and it seemed like what you were looking for.

Anyone update to Mavericks yet? I just realized I could the other day and I was going to until I got this message. Looks like I'm holding off for a bit.

Quote
Dear WD Registered Customer,

As a valued WD customer we want to make you aware of new reports of Western Digital and other external HDD products experiencing data loss when updating to Apple's OS X Mavericks (10.9). WD is urgently investigating these reports and the possible connection to the WD Drive Manager, WD Raid Manager and WD SmartWare software applications. Until the issue is understood and the cause identified, WD strongly urges our customers to uninstall these software applications before updating to OS X Mavericks (10.9), or delay upgrading. If you have already upgraded to Mavericks, WD recommends that you remove these applications and restart your computer.

The WD Drive Manager, WD Raid Manager, and WD SmartWare software applications are not new and have been available from WD for many years, however solely as a precaution WD has removed these applications from our website as we investigate this issue. .

Sincerely,
Western Digital

I doubt there is a systems prefs settings to disable the output.

Could be a cable issue? TV input problem? MacBook output?

Does your MacBook support Airplay? Maybe it's time to buy an Apple TV and go wireless?

I've tried different cables, same problem.  Tried different tvs, same.
It could be my hardware on the Mac is my only conclusion at this point.

With the departure of our designer here at work, I took the opportunity to grab the huge Thunderbolt display and also finally upgrade my company-issue MBP, which I had been using since spring 2009. Now I'm on a mid-2012 model with better specs and am trying Mavericks for the first time. I had deliberately been avoiding OS upgrades (with the exception of a little-used MB at home) because there were certain things about M/Lion I didn't like and I was happy with Snow Leopard. But so far I'm digging Mavericks.

Not sure where this goes so I'll just stick it here.

If you like uncomfortable silences, you'll love the end of this clip when a CNBC anchor mentions how Tim Cook is openly gay. Which is not entirely true. And of course by "not entirely true" I mean not even remotely true.

CNBC Panel Goes Awkwardly Silent When Host 'Outs' Apple CEO as Gay

Things got a bit awkward for CNBC's Squawk on the Street when one of the show's co-hosts accidentally "outed" Apple CEO Tim Cook as being gay.

New York Times columnist James R. Stewart joined the panel to discuss his latest piece profiling John Browne, the former CEO of BP, and his "tortured life" living as the gay chief executive of a Fortune 500 company. "You'd think CEOs especially are measured by objective criteria, financial performance," Stewart said, and yet there's a corporate culture that prevents powerful gay men from going public.

"There are gay CEOs in major companies, and I reached out to many of them," he informed the hosts. "I got an extremely cool reception, not one would allow to be named at all."

Enter co-host Simon Hobbs: "I think Tim Cook is fairly open about the fact he's gay at the head of Apple, isn't he?"

Silence from the panel. Everyone turned to look at Stewart, who responded, "Hmm, no."

"Oh, dear, was that an error?" Hobbs asked. "I thought he was open about it."

After shaking his head in disappointment with Hobbs, Stewart said: "I don't want to comment about anybody who might or might not be. I'm not going to out anybody."

Despite long-standing assertions that Cook is gay, the CEO has neither publicly confirmed nor denied the fact.

Unrelated to that, I am now posting from my office on my new 27" iMac with my old Windows machine virtualized via VMWare Fusion. Shit is awesome.

I am sorry, I am sure this has been covered here before, but without getting into a huge thing, should i update my old ass (4-5 year) iMac to Mavericks?  I am currently running 10.8.5.  I usually go for the upgrades, just wondering if there is a reason not for me to do it.  TIA

Yes, Mavericks is definitely the best OS option right now, and I hear the new one is supposed to be even better.  The current performance and battery efficiency of Mavericks is amazing.

I ran Snow Leopard up until a few months ago. I initially had some problems with Mavericks and had to re install. It is much better since then. There are definitely some features worth having, but subjectively I'm not sure if my MB ran better on SL than Mavericks. Specifically, I think programs opened quicker. I find that I need to repair disc permissions, and then it runs great for a few weeks, then slows down again
Either way, it's close call on performance imo

so, I am converting to the Mac route.  I have a lot of music on a lot of hard drives.
I can do the Macbook > HDMI > Receiver for music.
I already have a Roku for my TV viewing needs (no cable).

do I or do I not need an Apple TV to make music listening easier?  opinions?

If the computer is going to be next to the system anyway, then a direct connection (HDMI or 3.5") would be cheap and easy and you can control the computer via the Remote app if you are not sitting right at the Mac.

Good on ya, Tim Cook.

Love the author bio.

Quote
Tim Cook Speaks Up

Throughout my professional life, I've tried to maintain a basic level of privacy. I come from humble roots, and I don't seek to draw attention to myself. Apple is already one of the most closely watched companies in the world, and I like keeping the focus on our products and the incredible things our customers achieve with them.

At the same time, I believe deeply in the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, who said: "Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?' " I often challenge myself with that question, and I've come to realize that my desire for personal privacy has been holding me back from doing something more important. That's what has led me to today.

For years, I've been open with many people about my sexual orientation. Plenty of colleagues at Apple know I'm gay, and it doesn't seem to make a difference in the way they treat me. Of course, I've had the good fortune to work at a company that loves creativity and innovation and knows it can only flourish when you embrace people's differences. Not everyone is so lucky.

While I have never denied my sexuality, I haven't publicly acknowledged it either, until now. So let me be clear: I'm proud to be gay, and I consider being gay among the greatest gifts God has given me.

Being gay has given me a deeper understanding of what it means to be in the minority and provided a window into the challenges that people in other minority groups deal with every day. It's made me more empathetic, which has led to a richer life. It's been tough and uncomfortable at times, but it has given me the confidence to be myself, to follow my own path, and to rise above adversity and bigotry. It's also given me the skin of a rhinoceros, which comes in handy when you're the CEO of Apple.

The world has changed so much since I was a kid. America is moving toward marriage equality, and the public figures who have bravely come out have helped change perceptions and made our culture more tolerant. Still, there are laws on the books in a majority of states that allow employers to fire people based solely on their sexual orientation. There are many places where landlords can evict tenants for being gay, or where we can be barred from visiting sick partners and sharing in their legacies. Countless people, particularly kids, face fear and abuse every day because of their sexual orientation.

I don't consider myself an activist, but I realize how much I've benefited from the sacrifice of others. So if hearing that the CEO of Apple is gay can help someone struggling to come to terms with who he or she is, or bring comfort to anyone who feels alone, or inspire people to insist on their equality, then it's worth the trade-off with my own privacy.

I'll admit that this wasn't an easy choice. Privacy remains important to me, and I'd like to hold on to a small amount of it. I've made Apple my life's work, and I will continue to spend virtually all of my waking time focused on being the best CEO I can be. That's what our employees deserve—and our customers, developers, shareholders, and supplier partners deserve it, too. Part of social progress is understanding that a person is not defined only by one's sexuality, race, or gender. I'm an engineer, an uncle, a nature lover, a fitness nut, a son of the South, a sports fanatic, and many other things. I hope that people will respect my desire to focus on the things I'm best suited for and the work that brings me joy.

The company I am so fortunate to lead has long advocated for human rights and equality for all. We've taken a strong stand in support of a workplace equality bill before Congress, just as we stood for marriage equality in our home state of California. And we spoke up in Arizona when that state's legislature passed a discriminatory bill targeting the gay community. We'll continue to fight for our values, and I believe that any CEO of this incredible company, regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation, would do the same. And I will personally continue to advocate for equality for all people until my toes point up.

When I arrive in my office each morning, I'm greeted by framed photos of Dr. King and Robert F. Kennedy. I don't pretend that writing this puts me in their league. All it does is allow me to look at those pictures and know that I'm doing my part, however small, to help others. We pave the sunlit path toward justice together, brick by brick. This is my brick.

Tim Cook is the CEO of Apple

So my circa 2008-9 iMac kicked the bucket a few weeks ago. Fan just went on full bore when I was out of town.  Wife powered down, which is what I would have done, but it is Doa since. Tried all the tricks. Thing is kablooey. Ponied up for a 5k retina. Shows up tomorrow. Stoked. Wanted a Mac Pro but couldn't justify it. With a decent display I was looking at $4500 minimum. Can't wait to get to work dialing it in. The old unit has been creeping for the past year. Ordered online because I had some add-ons but scoped the 5k display at the store.  It's pretty sweet.

Nice.
My '09 13" mbp has shown signs of hdd failure for a couple weeks.
Coworker just had the sme problem with her '10.
She replaced the hdd and sold it to me for the cost of the drive $150.
Slightly newer and a 17" screen... Not bad when I'm saving my loot for FTW.

I had a Macpro with Cinema Display before this dead one and gave the display to my dad to use for his laptop docking station because he doesn't use a desktop. Pretty bummed because I would have gone the mini route too. For what I do these days, the mini is enough I think. i am psyched on the new one though. My old iMac was one of the first gen Intel ones ( one of the first metal case ones) and was not even 16:9 size, it is pretty square which always bugged me after the next generation had the 16:9.

The problem with an iMac is that it's pretty useless once the computer is out of spec.

I'll always have some purpose for my Cinema Display, even after they release a Retina/5K model.

I have the same 1TB Fusion drive in my Mac Mini that comes in the 5K iMacs, it's pretty slick.

Side note - I'm moving my computers to the new this weekend and really want to mount the dual monitor setup on the wall at the new place.  The VESA Mount Adapter for the Cinema Display's is almost $50...

First post (or anything) from the new comp.  Stoked!  This display is insanity!  Time to set up (without any file migration) was 6-7 minutes.  I literally pulled this thing out of the box 6 minutes ago, plugged it in and I am online. SO sick.  I agree with you Matt about their usefulness after they run their course but I got good life out of the last one.  Yes, now I have a boat anchor in my garage, but oh well.  My first time poking around the new(ish) operating system too.  This shit is rad sauce.  About to plug in some drives and bring over the essentials from my old box.  Fired up as you can tell!

My only thing now is trying to get the old HD out of my last one so I can erase/kill it.  Looked online and getting an HD put out my last vintage is a major deal.  Removing the whole glass and everything.  At least I won't have to put it back together.  Even though it's dead, I want to wipe that HD.  I love putting old HDs in the drill press at work and turning them into swiss cheese.  :-D

Thanks.  The issue though is that I can't get the machine up (toasted power supply), so my issue is getting access to it.  Saw some tutorials on line and while not impossible, it's pretty labor intensive to remove the cover and glass. Maybe I should put the whole thing in the drill press!

Yep, I've been enjoying.  Bringing lover the entire iTunes library which prob needs some scrubbing (and is taking forever) but I'll go through it when I have time and get rid of some stuff.  Got rid of a ton of apps, will just start with fresh new versions and just backed up document folders and such, but besides pictures and music, I'm leaving the rest on an old backup.  I also started a new iPhoto library.  Just learned how to create multiple libraries (holding down option while launching) which is sweet.  My old photo library is 200gb and browsing was a nightmare.  Starting with a fresh library but happy I have easy access to the old picture vault.

Thought I had moved over the iTunes smoothly.  Got all the media (music and video) but did it in such a way that I lost all my playlists.  Not a huge deal, but I did have about 100+ playlists.  Can do most of them over, but I lost some killer mixes.  Oh well, playlists are fun to make.

Agreed.  My thing just overheated and the power supply fried.  The way the older iMacs are built, replacing the PS was just more of a hassle, plus it was just so bogged down and running slow.  I was looking for an excuse for a new comp, and got one.  The later iMacs are more expandable (HD and RAM) and I would imagine the store could easily swap out PS.  I just didn't want to drop any money into mine.  Yours should be good for years.  My MacPro which was two machines ago, still runs perfectly.

I just had a malware pop up. I closed out, googled it, went to the mac support page, did all the steps to manually remove the program but in fact nothing popped up.
The mac is running fine now - I enabled adbloc for Safari and did a couple other things.
I don't particularly want to d/l any malware removal tools because some of them contain malware themselves.

Any suggestions on what, if anything, I should do now?

thx

I grabbed one off Ebay for $26 shipped. It was refurbished but worked like a charm until I dropped the MBP.
So when I got my MacBook Air, I was able to sell the old charger on Kijiji for $30.

My MacBook Pro took a wee tumble the other night and shortly thereafter the HDD went belly-up. Took that as an opportunity to make the long-put-off upgrade to a nice, shiny SSD. Seems pretty brisk so far.

pardon my ignorance - you installed a new HD into an old MBP?

What version MBP was it?
How much did it set you back?
Were you able to do it yourself?

do the new versions of MBP have faster / better processors?

Yeah, I put a solid-state drive (SSD) into my mid-2012 MBP. I went with a 500 GB Samsung 850 EVO, which is neither the cheapest nor priciest model but gets good marks. It was around $180 after tax.

I've replaced hard drives many times; it's very easy provided you have the right mini screwdrivers. I understand it's a little trickier on the newer retina MBPs that come with SSDs already, but not too much so.

As for processing, mine actually has the same configuration as the new MBPs for sale. Seems like the advancements lately have been in the display, standard SSD storage, maybe graphics cards, not sure what else.

Recently backed up my MacBook Pro from 2009 because it was beginning to get seriously laggy and non-responsive.  While doing this I cleaned off many files I did not need, moved all movies and other large files solely on my external HD & organized all my folders.  Machine is running great now and managed to scrape up an extra 100Gb of data.

I'm still ready for it to sh*t the bed soon though.  I'm thinking of the new MacBook Air's since I store/stream a majority of my music off the cloud & Spotify now.  It will really be great to travel and bike with around town.

Does anybody have a good Apple malware/virus scan software? Preferably a free version? Since I'm entertaining the idea of switching companies I have been doing more private and secure things on my Mac versus my work computer.

I had a nasty little Browser-based piece of malware, took me a couple hours to find something effective to remove it.

Malwarebytes was effective.

Anyone familiar with the hardware of macbook pros?

my friend is giving me their old 2007 macbook pro because the charger port is busted and they cant get a charger in it anymore so it doesnt turn on. I want to harvest the motherboard from the 2007 macbook pro for my 2008 macbook pro that broke two years ago because the video card fried which can only be replaced by replacing the whole motherboard since its soldered onto the motherboard.

I looked it up and the video cards are the same in both models but not quiet sure about the rest of the parts or if the 2007 motherboard will work in the 2008 or if its the same size etc

Have you checked out ifixit.com for guides? And are you getting the 2007 for free?

You may be looking at integrated components that will not be interchangeable.

Yeah from the pics the boards look the same....but still not positive that alll parts of the motherboard are interchangeable as RJ stated.

And now the girl is asking for 100 bucks for her damaged macbook.....prob not worth it but would be a fun project to open up her 2007 and see if it worked by swamping them since mine is pretty much useless at the moment too.

Have I mentioned how much I hate the Mac App Store? Of course you have to log in with an Apple ID to get anything, and half the time I do I get an "Unknown Error" or some nonsense. Yet the fact that it exists means more and more developers route you there to install a simple piece of software, which in turn puts you at the mercy of Apple's buggy and bloated interface. Just give me a damn DMG download like the good old days.

I have a 2010 MBP and have used up all the memory. I'm running Mavericks.  I'm picking up my new MBP with 1 TB, SSHD tomorrow. I have a backup of my current MBP on a HD with carbon copy cloner.
Any advice on the the best way to transfer data?
Should I upgrade my old MBP to El Capitan 1st?

I second that; transfers via Time Machine are painless. You don't need the newest OS on the donor computer either, so I'd not bother with El Cap there.

But, have you considered just putting a new SSD in the old computer? You'll see a nice performance boost for under $300. Unless you just want the new comp anyway.

I would personally be doing a Migration rather than a restore of the Time Machine Backup...  that way, it copies only what is needed to the new computer and OS.  Some people do have problems with this because of older extensions/apps sometimes, but I would say that it should work 99% of the time without any hassle.

My wife, who works from the house one day a week, managed to get her company to send down an unused 27-in iMac for our home office. It's a mid-2011 but was previously used for graphic design so the specs are solid. I'm setting up a little command center for myself here with the old iMac (currently only a media server; probably will just transfer everything over) and my MBP, which I plan to connect to the iMac via Thunderbolt  most times to use the big computer as an external display. I had a Thunderbolt display at a previous job a couple years back, so it's nice to have this much real estate again. And even the built-in speakers are a notable upgrade.

P.S. Damn, Thunderbolt cables are expensive.

Any of you guys keep your iTunes media on an external drive? If so, is it still just as easily accessible from networked thingies like Apple TV for streaming via the computer? I'm facing a few options with respect to my Big Data Move, which I can detail out further, but my first question to address is that iTunes library one.

I stream 1080p videos to the AppleTV from the Thunderbolt external drive.  I used to stream 720p content over the Firewire 800 connection from my Drobo without any issue (RIP).

Would a USB drive even work? After all, it wouldn't take 2 hours to simply copy a movie file. Also, are you navigating to your computer via ATV just like the library was on the computer itself?
Title: Re: Yes I have a Mac, where to go from here...

Certainly USB3.0 would work. I use the AppleTV remote to navigate.

This guy seems to think (http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/answers/is-a-usb-2.0-external-drive-fast-enough-for-my-itunes-library) USB 2.0 for an external iTunes library is OK. I'll also investigate Firewire 800. Unfortunately, the computer I'm plugging into doesn't have USB 3.0.

I been using the external route for a while. I have one of these

I have a laptop and need the external plugged in every time I use iTunes. Can also keep a small music folder on your HD with stuff you want to listen to more often so you dont need the external for those couple albums/shows

Now I'm on the fence between an external dual-drive dock (probably exposed bare drives) and an NAS. I like the idea of keeping everything enclosed in an NAS, and even though it's networked, ethernet should be speedier than USB 2.0 into the back of my desktop. On the other hand, a USB 3.0 drive dock would provide a little futureproofing there. On the other hand, with an NAS I think I could play directly from the iTunes library to different computers (although not simultaneously) without having to go through Home Sharing. On the other hand, an NAS is pricier. On the other hand, maybe I'd rather clone periodically than use RAID.

Decisions...

I went with a Drobo and haven't looked back... it's a bit of a pain to keep the iTunes library there because then it's not as easily accessible when I travel, but all of my SHNs/FLACs are stored there, and it's super easy to add additional storage or replace failing drives at any time.  They have USB 3 or Thunderbolt versions, but also ones with just Ethernet if you want to run a pure, headless NAS.
Title: Re: Yes I have a Mac, where to go from here...
Post by: VDB on August 07, 2016, 05:57:10 PM
I ended up ordering a USB 3 / FW 800 dual drive enclosure. It'll plug into the iMac for media-serving purposes. If I need to play stuff on another Mac I can use Home Sharing, so doing an NAS seemed unnecessary. And rather than be locked into RAID I'll just set a schedule to periodically clone one drive to the other for backup purposes.

Don't use uTorrent, they've got some weird spyware shit going on.  My normal go-to would have been Transmission, as it's slick and has always been really fast, but they also had a very strange infection thing going on the past few months, so just grab Deluge as it's pretty safe and works well enough:  http://deluge-torrent.org

No problems with what.cd that I'm aware of, so that shouldn't be an issue...

Check their white list clients page. I personally love utorrent 3.2.1. Transmission and deluge are both great too. But definitely check which versions are okay with what.cd. I pretty much hate new version of all torrent clients. They keep adding too many features. I like like 3.2.1 for that reason. Ah I see, I know that's the kind of stuff that makes or breaks a version on the what.cd whitelist. Deluge is what I use when I have CLI seedbox/torrent machine going. Deluge has the easiest setup in CLI, very simplistic and powerful!

Apple is taking a lot of flack over the new MacBook Pros, and very rightly so (in my opinion). Here's a good roundup (http://mjtsai.com/blog/2016/10/27/new-macbook-pros-and-the-state-of-the-mac/) of some reactions, if you're interested.

Suffice it to say, I'll be hanging on to my mid-2012 workhorse as long as possible.

Just snagged a new MBP. First since 2011(!).
Went with the 13" this time, touch bar, etc. Just getting a moment to kind of test drive it right now. The keyboard is slick, but will take some getting used to for me here moving down in size from the behemoth 17" I had previously. I really needed something much more compact to carry around with me as I work, so I decided on this.
Just figured this thread could really use a bump, and I needed to type something to attempt to familiarize myself with the more compact layout.

New iwatch you can make calls without the phone thats pretty big.
Wasn't too impressed with the iPhone 8 or 8+. They look like the Androids with the now full curved screen. iPhone X looks pretty cool but 1,000 bucks...cant afford that one.
Taking away the home button is interesting, kinda saw that coming.

wireless charging is nice addition. Need that on the magic mouse 2

All I know is these phones are going to be a headache and very expensive to repair. Moving to OLED curved screen you can expect a $400+ screen repair for up to 6-9 months after parts start hitting the market.
Taking away the home button may not even make it possible with how the 7 uses a software button.

Basically if you buy one. Get insurance or apple care. It will be worth the investment

To give you an idea, Samsung only uses OLED
S7 (non edge) $150 part
Edge $240 part
iPhone 7 $30 part
7+ $40 part

S8 screens are comparable in price to the S7 edge.

Watches are super expensive too due to parts availability, the screens for the current iwatch is ~$120 for 38mm or 42mm. Get apple care if you get one!

Still moving into my new MacBook Air... What's the Bit Torrent client people use on Mac now? Still Transmission?

I'm on qbittorrent and I'd recommend it.

personally I like Deluge the best. Use it for casual torrenting on Linux, it has a Mac client too.

If you're doing heavy duty, hundreds or thousands of torrents, it has issues. I've only used rtorrent successfully there, and you can homebrew install it quite easily. And you can install a graphical front end for it if you need to

I've stuck with Transmission but don't use their auto-update after that last fiasco.  It's pretty fast and I like the configurable options a lot, so don't have much of a reason to change unless they decide to start installing backdoors again...

I can't speak to the Mac experience, but as a Windows user I love QBittorent.  It's a lot like what uTorrent was like before it turned to crap.

Maybe too many people complained and it's back to normal now, but a few years ago it got loaded up with ads and you had to jump through hoops to get them to go away.

FINALLY - someone made a good Acestream app for Mac!  It's still just in a WINE bottle but it works and is way better than the last shitty version of this that had been floating about for years.  If you want to watch some awesome streams from the underbelly of the interwebs, enjoy: https://acestreamformac.squarespace.com/

When I bought my MacMini in 2013 a 1TB Fusion drive was not that expensive.  I have about 750GB used on my internal Mac HDD.
New Macs have SSD drives and get super expensive if you want more than 256GB of storage.

If you have a 128GB iPhone you can't even backup your device without taking up half or all of your internal storage.

Less of a question and more of a WTF and How The Fuck and I'm going to replace this Mac Mini.

What kind of Mac are you looking at? Another Mini? Because if you're getting the 2018 mini, the storage is soldered onto the board, so you cannot upgrade it.

If you're looking at 2016+ Macbook Pros, you have the same issue as the 2018 mini.

If you're looking at 2012-2015 Macbook Pro Retinas, those can be upgraded with an adapter (see below) and a M.2 drive for the cheapest storage upgrade.

I've been sitting on OS 10.10 Yosemite for a long minute now. Holy crap, it came out in '14. I prefer to take my sweet time on updates since I don't like fixing what's not broke and Apple OS rollouts don't tend to excite me anymore.

Now I'm starting to run into more and more software I can't install because of my cranky ways.

Tell me, people of the future: what's it like out there on OS X Fisherman's Wharf or whatever? Is it time for me to get with the program?

For windows:

Handbrake is free

or dvd decrypter -> autoGK, those are free

There does seem to be some DVD encryption schemes that it can't rip.

So, it ripped it but the end result looks like the scrambled cable porn I used to watch as a kid. I assume that's because of the DRM?? Any suggestions?

My daughter just got the new MB Air for her birthday a couple of weeks back.  More dough than we would usually spend on a bday but the grandparents all chipped in and we had to make something happen since she is now doing all of her schooling online.  Got $100 off from education program.  Anyway, this thing is bitchin.  My main PC is a 2015 27 retina iMac and I also have a 10 year old MBP but that's barely hanging on.  New MBAir is dope.  Fast and light and a lot of cool features.  I'll get a new laptop at some point, and would normally go MBP, but from what I have seen so far, not sure why I wouldn't go Air for  myself.

My only gripe with the Air and the "Macbook" (12" model) is that they don't have cooling fans, which I've definitely seen a lot of them fry themselves. It's nice they're quiet, but not worth the risk, especially if you do anything more than web browsing and office programs.  Go for the MBP, spend the extra money so hopefully it'll last longer overall.

Good to know though I wish I would have known that before purchasing. She doesn't do any power using but she does use it for 6-8 hours a day for school and movies.

the very first Air did not have a fan - that was one of its big selling points if I recall.  they also engineered one of the quietest fans ever made for later Macbook Pros and i think that eventually made it into the Air line so they could ramp up the processor a bit more.  i love my MBP, but the Air is just a stunning design and a perfect computer for 95% of the population that don't need power.

Yeah I knew that. And from what tet said, then I'm not losing my mind ... yet

My shop hardly seems Mac computers anymore, they've really locked down repairs on them. Most of the newer computers need to be calibrated any time any important hardware component is swapped, which means 3rd party shops can't touch them unless it's something simple like a screen or battery and a few other minor repairs. But I will say they've improved quality the overall quality. I haven't seen any of the newer ones with serious "known issues" like the 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 GPU issues.

And I will say, I dig the newer designs. But I cannot stand their keyboards. IMO they're trash and they keep getting worse. But that trackpad is so nice, and of course the displays are to die for.

My wife has one of the recent MacBooks with the butterfly keyboard. I hate it—it feels like typing on a countertop. I understand the new MBPs have added back some of the lost key travel but not all of it.

I have gotten my hands on a MBA with Catalina on it. I quickly noticed that fonts appear faintly blurry and too-light. I did a side by side with a MBA running Yosemite and the difference is there. Apparently this is a known thing; I've toggled the "use font smoothing" pref and it does something in some cases but doesn't heal the problem. Is this OS just plain not designed for non-retina displays? I think I'm going to downgrade that MBA (it's the better machine) in order to comfortably use it.

Yeah i am that way but with the IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad keyboards.  Especially cause I use the trackpoint, AKA keyboard nipple, I cannot use any other computer. Mechanical keyboards are king though, I've built a few. And there's nothing is as satisfying to type on.

I did like the 2008-12 MBP unibody keyboards though, they had a real nice feel.

You can actually get some very low actuation force switches for them these days, and you can stick with a "linear" switch instead of the bump or click that most of them have. Very easy to type on. Plus you don't have to bottom out the key for it to register which has actually relieved a bunch of the pain I get from typing all day.

Now I'm just imagining you dictating everything you post here, haikus and all.

Vortexs are pretty nice. I have a few that I built, they're really strange though, non-standard layout and less buttons so I don't have to move my fingers as much. I'm a very lazy person.

My 2015 iMac went belly up. The internal drove toasted.  I have it all on time machine but I couldn't get the internal to boot/mount for the life of me so now it's a 27" paperweight.  Got the M1 iMac and it's great. I wish they had the 27 out but the 24 seems fine so far and it smokes the other unit speed wise.  Downside, only 4 ports (2 USB-C and 2 x Thunderbolt) so dock adds to the cost and these things don't come with any internal storage now.  I think 1TB is the biggest drive you can get. So here's my question: storage is cheap, so I am going to shelve my old time machine drive for redundancy, and get a new one and start fresh, probably just a 5TB external. But I am going to need another drive for new photo library, new music etc. Do I spend the extra $$ on an SSD for that or just get another 5TB external for $120?  How do you guys back up (cloud/external?) and what do you use for your day to day drives?

I had a similar problem when I replaced my 2012 Mac mini, I opted for a 500GB drive, then I use externals for photos/music storage, no need for SSD.

For Backups I use ARQ, and I backup to Amazon Glacier Storage, it's super cheap - like $1/month/TB.

I use a MacBookAir as my primary machine and it doesn't have shit for storage. I like these little san disc 500GB/1tb SSD externals. They're quick and small and not very expensive.

I think it's worth getting a decent SSD, but not too big - just get an external for backup or added storage.

all of the above are good options. I have a Drobo 5D which allows for a separate Time Machine and backup partitions. you can increase size just by adding drives. all of it has built-in redundancy, in a next-level kind of RAID setup. drives can fail and no data is lost, and I've had a few of those happen in the 8 years since I started used it. they have newer NAS versions to consider, but those get very expensive.

Anyone upgrade to Montery (OS 12)? I'm running OS 11, no problems. I have a 2016 MB Pro. I'm wondering if it's worth the time / potential aggravation.
I backed up last night so I'm all set there.
I forget since my last upgrade - if I do it will I have to re-enter all the un/pw on web sites?
Thanks

Usernames and Passwords are in your Keychain and won't have to be updated.

what about the ones that aren't in keychain. Will the web site recognize me?
Is there anything significant in the update?
I read about it on various ratings sites but I wonder about in actual use?

I'm on it with no hitches on my 2018 MacBook Air.
I didn't lose cookies or anything when I upgraded.
