good article here, summing up the rumors and their sources: http://gizmodo.com/5324557/apple-tablet-probability-meter-80-chance-4-months-away (http://gizmodo.com/5324557/apple-tablet-probability-meter-80-chance-4-months-away)

I wonder if I will want this. It looks like I'll be in the market for a new laptop come September... could this be it?

I dunno.. If the Financial Times article cited there is accurate it's gonna be sooner than you think.

Given the rumblings out there right now I don't think Apple Insider is crazy to predict 2010.

I love the idea of this, not so much as a laptop replacement, but a iPod touch & Kindle 2 replacement.

It's funny but, I don't see it as a kindle replacement. Stanza on my iPod Touch does that already.

I'm not sure Apple(Steve) sees the demand yet.  With the power they can pack into a phone, a tablet could really be a fill the gap device.  But as we know, Apple's reluctant to fill those gaps.  It's kind of like you're either a beginner or expert.  There are many uses for a tablet, and Apple is the type of company that is likely to just go for it - wouldn't want anyone stealing the thunder.

The accessories market alone would be killer.

Custom breakout cables for USB, FireWire800, data.
Custom stands/mounts for use at a desktop with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse.
Think of the sleeves and screen protectors!

There's a shit-ton of money there alone.

Given all the heat on this to the point that it looks like a lock for January, I thought I'd give her a bump...
Title: Re: Mac Tablet???
Post by: mattstick on December 29, 2009, 07:58:32 AM

I don't really see why you would prefer a tablet to a Macbook, pricing?

When you're at home you use a keyboard but away from home you type on it like an iPhone?

I'm sure I'll want one at some point - I already want the whole product line, but why I want this isn't quite clear.
Title: Re: Mac Tablet???
Post by: rowjimmy on December 29, 2009, 08:23:45 AM
Personally, I'm not sure if I'd prefer one.

I think the thrust of these is as a media viewer but I'm certain that there are significant productivity applications that could be developed.

I was recently in a doctor's office that used what I know to be very expensive tablet/laptop machines as the primary interface for the nurses and doctors to do their record keeping. Not that the mac tablet would necessarily be the solution but cheaper, lighter, keyboardless, wifi driven, is where they are inevitably going.

I have little doubt that, if Jobs is going to pitch it next month, we won't come away from that with a firm idea of its role in the marketplace.

Yeah, I was listening to the radio this morning and it seems like all of the big players have their own version.  They estimate it will take the place of desktops and laptops in the future due to their light weight and how easy it will be to use.  I am still skeptical but I also just got my first cell phone a month ago so I am definitely behind in the times.

Most of the folks I know who own tablets swear by them. Of course, they're also science/engineering nerd types who appreciate diagramming by hand. :)

From everything I've heard on tech blogs, the Apple tablet will be too underpowered to serve those folks. It sounds like they're going to try to create a new market for tablets rather than cater to the existing (niche) one. If anyone's got the Midas touch to pull that off, it's probably Jobs. It'll be interesting to see how it shakes out...

I think the specs and openness of the platform will determine the path of the device.
Will it run OSx or iPhoneOS?
Will it be chained to an appstore or will it be open like a regular computer?

My money's on the latter. I can see Apple marketing this device at a somewhat-reasonable price point as the world's coolest Kindle.

If Apple manufactures a Core2Duo tablet, it's going to be a niche option within an already niche market. If Dell can get away with charging $1900 (after ~$500 instant discount) for their new Latitude tablets, how high will the bill run for an Apple?

There are some good deals on MBPs from 3rd parties. Like here:

I think this is a "by popular demand" device.  I just hope that Apple has something worthwhile planned with its release.  The newspaper/magazine thing is good, but I think the service would be better like where you actually download a publication, not just browse a website with a subscription.  Could work like a "pdf podcast".  Other than that, there's the opportunity for it to be a decent gaming device and generally the next step in touchscreen tech.

While we're filling the gaps, where's that headless iMac?
Title: Re: Mac Tablet???
Post by: rowjimmy on December 29, 2009, 01:17:34 PM
"by popular demand" if done right is a good idea for Apple right now.

Consider the fact that Google has a netbook os due next year and is hosting an Android "event" on Jan5 at which they will be announcing the google phone.

Apple has a new major competitor...

Title: Re: Mac Tablet???

not at all... apple isnt concerned with gaining market share, they don't care what MS does IMO.

now maybe in markets that they are the kings in they might care more (cellphone, music)

but overall i think apple does a good job of knowing what they do and doing it better than anyone
Title: Re: Mac Tablet???
Post by: rowjimmy on December 29, 2009, 02:14:55 PM
I think you are overestimating their aloofness.

It would be unwise and likely to send them back into the wilderness that was the Jobs-free years to ignore the competition.

Which is why I don't think that they are doing that.
Google is pushing closer and closer to Apple's turf.

Title: Re: Mac Tablet???

let me rephrase that... i know apple pays attention to the competition, but i think they do a great job of doing their own thing.

That's just it. I think Jobs & co see the new tablet (if it exists) as a new market that they can "win." I think they see it more along the lines of the iPod and iPhone than the MBP. $.02

Optical drive?

and while they may see more competition, i don't think it affects how they decide to do business.  at least as far as what products to release and when.

I think this will be rather successful product.  The consumers are becoming more and more interested in touch screens and gadgetry.  Iphone, Droid, new touch screen PC's entering the consumer market place, etc.

I see it as a larger itouch.  If it lands in the $500 mark, I'd be on that train.  A Bluetooth keyboard would make this a sweet device around the house.  Recipes, surfing the interweb, etc.  I think a tablet from Apple sounds like a sweet idea.

http://www.tuaw.com/2009/12/30/rumor-mill-tablet-to-be-large-scale-iphone/

Google China's former head has posted what appears to be insider details about the (possibly) upcoming Apple tablet device. According to Gadget Mix, Kaifu Lee blogs that "an informed friend" told him the Apple tablet looks like a larger scale iPhone with "an awesome UI packed in a beautiful 10.1-inch screen."

Gadget Mix's Tommy Lawson writes that Kaifu Lee's Chinese-language post (Google Translate version) suggests that the tablet will provide eBook functionality, a virtual keyboard, and a built-in webcam, with 10 million units to be produced in the first year of distribution. He adds that Lee's ongoing relationship with Taiwan's Foxconn Technology Group lends weight to his reliability as a source on the subject.

Although this development adds no new features into the tablet rumor mill, it's comforting to know that the possibly mythical tablet is getting more and more plausible by the day.

QuoteIt will run all the applications of the iPhone and iPod Touch, have a persistent wireless connection over 3G cellphone networks and Wi-Fi, and will be built with a 10-inch color display, allowing newspapers, magazines and book publishers to deliver their products with an eye to the design that had grabbed readers in print.

I was chatting with my father in law about that recently.  I don't know how far off it really is.  Considering the movement towards "green" and the fact that current college students have grown up with a PC since day 1, I think you would see it happen at the University/college level.  Some places require students to have laptops.  Why not a tablet with their text books.  I could see just saving tons of trees as a major benefit alone.

Post by: mattstick on January 26, 2010, 09:29:37 AM
Public schools in Canada have already moved away from having Macs in the classroom because of budget restrictions.

I agree that a huge % of University/College students could have these within even 2 years.  It also curbs something that text book publishers hate - used book sales.

I think that this will be a very flashy, sexy device - but it will also be very restricted unless "hacked" as far as installing pirated software, and making you pay for every single thing you do on the device.

Why would you think it would be restricted?  If you are referring to the educational side only, then yeah it would have to be limited.  As a consumer tool, I would think it would remain open.

But then again, if you limit its abilities even at the educational level, don't you really limit its true ability as a tool?

I'm certain the OS will be closer to the iPhone OS than Mac OS.

Want Photoshop for your tablet?  Download and install it from the App Store for $499.99

The pricing/business model of the App Store on a large scale is very inticing to Apple, I'm sure.

I agree that if it makes it to classrooms it will be on the college level before anything, long before.  I've heard nightmares of how much just buying used college textbooks can be... it's ridiculous and being able to use one of these tablets instead would def save students some money on that end I think.  As for other venues though, like high schools. 90% just don't have the budget to make this happen, not even close.  So unless Apple does something like "Tablets for students" or something like that I just don't see it happening for a while

yeah it's outrageous.

I do believe college textbooks are heading towards a kindle or tablet like device. I don't believe the ensuing consumer discount will be as high as we would like it to be. :) higher profits for the textbook racket will come first.

anyway I love my kindle, but before it was gifted to me I wad a bonafide Kindle hater. I despised the idea of paying for a book I couldn't put on the shelf. but the form factor of the Kindle won me over. maybe I'm a lazy American but it makes reading in bed soooo much easier.

having said all that I am skeptical of the Apple Tablet. I think apple is due for a fail, and if this thing is at the rumored price point of $1000 it could be a fail.

I think the argument of not having to buy books sounds nice, but students are still going to pay high prices to have these books online.  Of course, someone will find a way around it, but don't expect prices for books to plummet due to this sort of technology.  Somebody is getting paid somewhere for these books.

I'm certain that the cost of physically producing a text book is a huge percentage of the retail price of the book.  A simple download would have to be priced under $20 imo.

Some personal thoughts about the Apple Tablet
by Mel Martin (RSS feed) on Jan 26th 2010 at 8:00AM

From every hint, from every rumor, from every direction it seems like some sort of Apple tablet is a done deal. We'll know for sure Wednesday, probably after a "one more thing" from El Jobso.

If a tablet is announced, I'm trying to figure out if I will buy one. I already have a Mac Pro desktop, a very serviceable MacBook Pro, and the latest 3GS iPhone. For reading I have a Kindle, and the 2 week battery life is pretty hard to beat. It's small, it's thin, and compared to the rumored cost of the Apple tablet, it's likely a lot cheaper.

But I think the dilemma will be even rougher on MacBook owners, who already have a nice small information appliance they can take anywhere. Looking at it as objectively as I can, there doesn't seem to be any room in my life for a tablet. It seems like the cure for which there is no disease. I get my email easily away from home any number of ways, and the iPhone is so good at so many things I don't take my laptop on the road as much as I used to. If, as expected, the tablet is smaller than the MacBook, maybe as thin as the MacBook Air, and significantly less expensive than either of those, it will turn some heads, but probably not mine. No way.

Of course it will take some stamina to resist the reality distortion field, and every friend I have will be wondering exactly when I'll get that tablet. I am "Mr. Mac," after all, and that's a lot of pressure. In fact, even now, the more I think about life without the tablet, the more difficult life seems. My resolve is slowly coming apart at the seams as I write these words.

To hell with it! It's not something I need. It doesn't solve any problems I have. I can resist. I am strong. I may be "Mr. Mac," but I am also "Mr. Practical."

Which is exactly what I said when the iPhone came out. 3 days later I was in the Apple Store eagerly holding out my credit card to anyone who would take it.

I'm certain that the cost of physically producing a text book is a huge percentage of the retail price of the book.  A simple download would have to be priced under $20 imo.

in 2000 I had a class where my "book" was a binder full of black and white photocopied articles. it cost $176. I would predict price drops of 20%, tops. students have to buy the books their professor tells them to, so there is no reason for textbook companies to minimize profit. we'll get the aforementioned small discount just as a "here's a benefit to you" bone, and honestly I'll be glad to get it.

I'm with that guy too.  I have a MacBook.  I have an iPhone.  They booth take care of just about everything I need.  One thing that would interest me in the tablet though is the use of a pressure sensitive pen for using in photoshop

I doubt that $100+ e-textbooks will be the norm.

Plus, every student should know you buy texts on a "need to use" basis, not at the beginning of term.

"Album, photos... you can look at all of them, flick through them, it's a wonderful way to share. Calendar... months..." The interface really does look like an exploded iPhone.

First up, he’s showing up Safari, going to Apple.com. Now he’s visiting the New York Times website. The page renders just like a browser’s, and there are the navigational buttons on the top.

Jobs clicked a story and there is a missing plugin error (is this flash? Does this mean that the iPad won’t have flash?)

Menus:

Email:

And to compose a message, click on compose and “up pops this gorgeous keyboard here.” Steve Jobs is typing actually NOT with his thumbs, but with fingers, like on a real keyboard. He’s placing it on his lap and typing away semi-naturally. But not without errors.

It’s a cross platform device, because he can sync photos with Mac and Windows, but if he’s on a Mac, you can get photo data like events and Places from iPhoto.

"You get the idea." Applause.

iTunes. jobs is playing Dylan.

Now, iTunes. He can pull up songs similar to the new Album Cover view in iTunes, and he taps different album covers to bring up a list of songs in that album. Tapping a song there plays the song. It’s more similar to iTunes on the desktop than iPod on the iPhone.

Jobs jumped over to calendar, which looks really like the one on the desktop, except for a couple more views like Day and List, which looks more like an organizer book (a physical one).

But what else? There’s a maps app, which is Google Maps (he doesn’t mention Google by name though!) Not yet, anyway.
He’s loading up his current location, that means this has GPS or some kind of location sensing. But, there’s no icon on the top next to the Wi-Fi icon that shows a 3G connection.

Apple will highlight apps that are created explicitly for the iPad in the iPad store as well. You can get iPhone apps, of course, but they will highlight the special ones.

Gaming demo...

They can “interact with the game world in ways that weren’t possible before,” like sliding three fingers on the screen to interact with a door.
You can also do motions like sliding two fingers across the screen to throw a grenade.

New York Times demo:
"So Steve showed you the Times website, it's beautiful. Why did we come out here to develop a new app for the iPad? Our iPhone app has been downloaded 3m times. We wanted to create something special for the iPad."

Jobs:

"WiFI plus 3G if you want it. So iPad. It's phenomenal. Email is fantastic, best device for photos, great for music, great for video. It runs almost all of the 140k apps on the app store, as well as a whole new generation of apps."

It's sold unlocked.

No, but I am suggesting some of us prefer things done a different way than the masses.  Ebooks to me are the equivalent of fast food...instant gratification. Book making is a craft in amongst itself.  Printing is a trade.  These things will not disappear just because a bunch of cool kids want to download the newest genre fiction rag on the subway on the way to their 9-5.

Also I am not hip to all these cool internet memes so, OK cool, crunchy it is!!! :-D

I've been reading books on my iPod Touch for the past year. It's awesome but small.
The iPad fixes that. Add the gaming and a watchable size for video and you've got a serial winner.

trees, as much as i love 'em, are renewable.  electricity, in most places, is still highly pollutant.  as well as all of the hazardous stuff that goes into a computer and its batteries, which probably a high percentage of people are still not aware of proper disposal methods.  neither are exactly environmentally sound, but you gotta take the good with the bad.

but, i cant read online or ebooks.  i get distracted by the grandness of the internet at my fingertips.  i prefer paper books for that reason alone.

i think iTab is a giant "yawn."

i gotta agree though that ebooks can suck it.

I'm telling y'all, I am a huge bibliophile. I collect books, have bookshelves all over my house, buy LEs and small press. I hated the idea of ebooks, HATED IT, until I was gifted a kindle. now I love it. it's just so freaking convenient.

1s and 0s have a lower carbon footprint.

Yeah but where do all those old computer parts go???  I'm sure they are soo much less harmful to the environment.  But anyhow...no need to continue this since I am probably one of the last people on earth with a respect for print.  (At the very least in this thread.)  I'll just be chilling, staying crunchy like mattstick suggested.

But, good thing this thing does more than ebooks since it is very attractive to me since I do not have an iphone and that price point should make everyone think...I just get cross eyed reading from a screen.

Anyway.

As for the environmental question, remember that Apple is an industry leader in reducing their impact.
QuoteiPad embodies Apple's continuing environmental progress. It is designed with the following features to reduce environmental impact:

    * Arsenic-free display glass
    * BFR-free
    * Mercury-free LCD display
    * PVC-free

See I really like the topic of books vs. ebooks...but it is sooo much more than what we really should go into in this thread.  No way to seriously debate the topic without completely hijacking this thread.

RJ:  LOL!!! No, I did not...but still not my point.  Too hard to fill in all those circles when on lsd anyhow!  I never took them for real.  Already was going going to NOVA and transferring to GMU...no need for SATs!

I think it'll be a success, but I can't think of a reason to own it other than the MLB app.

And I think I've already decided to pay for Extra Innings as opposed to mlb.tv or a mobile app. I can always watch from my laptop via slingplayer.

Would I rather have it than a Kindle or Sony reader? Hell, yeah. But it's still a bit short on features (no camera = limited skype, no multitasking, Safari only = bad news for those who must use badly-designed web sites for work).

What do you call something that doesn't FAIL but doesn't WIN, either?

ETA:

Ironically I would have been more interested if this had actually turned out to be a "Mac Tablet." Compared to a Kindle or netbook, though, this thing compares much more favorably...

I <3 my Kindle. I travel a lot for work and have to take a work notebook with me (never gonna be a Mac esp. as long as HP is my only customer)... if I'm carrying a notebook with me, I don't want another device as big as a notebook with me, as well. Even at 1.5 lbs that's too much added to my backpack. Kindle plus a 160gb iPod and I'm set for the type of travel I do.

I haven't used a Kindle, but I've read that one thing they got right is the paper-like matte display. That's one thing I wonder about w/ the iPad: how usable is it outside or in natural sunlight? Glossy displays are notoriously bad for outdoor viewing, unless they're capable of retina-searing brightness. That works, but it kills battery life like nothing else...

Anybody getting in one day one of the iPad sales?

Me neither.

Couple interesting tidbits have been clarified or changed since the announcement though.

They've added a "Screen Rotation Lock" button. On the left is what they showed us @ the launch. The right is what is presently for sale...

This is good if your reading lying down or whatever... nothing more annoying as when I'm playing a game on my iPod touch and it flips orientation because I tilt too far.

Also, they've explained how the data service stuff works. Looks super easy.

Don't see much point in having a still camera on there, but the potential for iChat sounds awesome.

This isn't a phone, you're not going to replace it in a year or two, are we sure the 3G network will be the definitive data network 3 or 4 years from now?

Project Gutenberg ebooks will be included in the iBookstore for free
by Chris Rawson (RSS feed) on Mar 26th 2010 at 1:00AM

Two days ago we told you that Project Gutenberg's ebooks should be compatible with the iPad, and we even showed you some ways to get around any possible restrictions Apple could have imposed on the vast catalog of free ebooks. Well, it looks like those workarounds won't be necessary, because according to appadvice, the entire Project Gutenberg catalog will be offered for free from the iBookstore.

Project Gutenberg has a library of over 30,000 books online, with classic titles from all walks of literature. Apple's not only supporting access to this vast library of works, they're officially offering it from within their own store, for free. This is a pretty classy move from Apple, and one that makes the iPad a very attractive purchase for anyone interested in reading the classics without shelling out a whole lot of money for them.

Here are the Top 100 Project Gutenberg titles:

Ok, so I ended up buying one. Got a 64gb model, and am so far loving it. It is magnitudes faster than an iPhone in terms of app launch and scrolling, especially when it comes to web pages. Animated gifs are not at full speed, and the lack of Flash is still a problem.

The thing that I am most impressed with is the unique abilities of many of the apps already optimized for the iPad. I can sit on my couch without a plugged in laptop and simply browse, do email, look up movie times, or read a book- or watch an episode of a TV show in bed with my headphones.  Something like Epicurious is completely engaging, with multiple panes and windows for recipes, ingredients, nutrition- it's an app I never thought I would want and I have a feeling it will become indispensable in the future. The keyboard has taken some getting used to, but I have found myself a dozen uses for this thing so far and I've only had it for a day. I think the iPad will be different things to different people, and that's exactly what the market was missing. We will see many imitators of the iPad in the near future...

Ok, so I ended up buying one. Got a 64gb model, and am so far loving it. It is magnitudes faster than an iPhone I terms of app launch and scrolling, especially when it comes to web pages. A imaged gifs are not at full speed, and the lack of Flash is still a problem.

Resistance is futile...you didn't stand a chance...once you hit the corner of the block, the Apple Store's gravitational pull sucked you in....It's like the Death Star!  Congrats, they are pretty sweet, and getting positive reviews across the board....

Nice!  I'm glad to hear more positives.  I was getting ready to jump on this thing, but I had to make the financial decision to wait.  I did the same with the phone and am at least satisfied that I did, knowing people with the previous model gawked at the speed of my new "S" phone.  If I had the money, I'd totally buy one now, but based on my experience and having some patience, maybe I'll be rewarded with a camera or other features in an iPad "S".

Still, I am jealous.  Congrats on the pad tet, I wish I could have one now.

Survey of early adopters
http://blogs.newsobserver.com/techjunkie/survey-reveals-who-bought-the-ipad (http://blogs.newsobserver.com/techjunkie/survey-reveals-who-bought-the-ipad)

No surprises. 2/3 own an iPhone, 3/4 own a Mac, 92% own an iPod. Apple fans showed up in force.

Primary use is mobile web surfing (74%): evidence that the iPad and Kindle may end up coexisting comfortably, all the "corporate gadget warz" talk notwithstanding...

Title: Re: Mac Tablet!!!
Post by: tet on April 06, 2010, 10:52:13 PM
Note that it was blended without the back cover on- otherwise this would be impossible to fit into that thing. Don't know if you saw the video of the kids attacking one with a baseball bat, but even that just put some dents in it. This thing feels pretty solid in my hands.

Having said that, I'm anxious to buy a case soon. It feels quite slippery overall, so I always hold it pretty tight when not over a soft surface. I'm hoping there will be some better ones soon because the Apple case doesn't appeal much to be. Besides the price, if it can't sit in the dock with that thing on but is not easy to remove, and also makes it harder to type as I've read online, I'm happy to wait until some more hit the market.

Typing, as to be expected on a tablet, isn't ideal, but it gets the job done. This is something that I can imagine many a future tablet maker struggling to do right, and I'm not sure if it's possible without a physical keyboard. Thankfully you can use the keyboard dock OR any Bluetooth keyboard, neither of which I have tried but both make this into a legit portable workstation. The whole OS is really fast, especially in comparison to my iPhone 3G, and with a few more updates on iWork and the ability to x-fer files to and from, I can definitely foresee leaving my MBPro at home. Both Safari and Mail are rock solid, and I can't argue with a slick touchscreen Google Maps either.

Btw, with some meticulous spellchecking, I've managed to write this on the iPad- but took me far longer than it should have.

I'd be interested in getting one, too. I can easily imagine taking it (instead of a laptop) on trips where real computing isn't necessary.

...just not at the current price.  :|

Engadget linked to a study that pegs the component costs of the $500 model at under $300. There's padding in that margin to support a price cut. No guarantee it will happen, though, if demand stays strong. See "Wii, Nintendo."

It would be a rare move.

Although they did price drop the iphone, Apple rarely cuts prices on products until the new model is released.
Title: Re: Mac Tablet!!!
Post by: Alumni on April 07, 2010, 11:25:42 AM
That, and the price isn't all that expensive in absolute terms. I can wait for the g2 model for a price drop -- which is good, because I probably will have to.

An iPad would be cool to have on trips, though. Battery life is long enough for any flight I'd find myself on -- so I could read on the plane and then check email and websurf at the hotel.

I still think I'd prefer an e-ink reader for reading texts. But I'll probably stick with paper for that stuff, anyway. A glossy display would be fine for reading shorter stuff...

Considering it came in at much less than what people thought it would cost, I would almost guarantee the price will not drop.

I also don't think gen 2 will really be that much different, maybe a faster processor.

It's not a phone, so the camera would have to be on the opposite side as the iPhone/Touch thus, enabling iChat.

Leave iChat for the Mac line, iPad doesn't need a camera.

I think that Job's focus on the portable and casual end-user market will drive the addition of a front facing camera on the future ipad.

This is why it needs a camera. I'm not going to sit at a conference table and hold an iPad up to my face for a business teleconference. That's what the laptop is for. But for when your granddaughter takes her first steps and you have to share the breakthrough right away with the grandparents or distant family . . . what would be handier than flipping on an iPad?

The $30 all-you-can-eat data plan from AT&T for the iPad 3G is pretty decent considering it's a data-only plan. But what if you're in another country or on another carrier? You'd think this would be easy, the iPad 3G being an unlocked GSM device, right? Not so fast. Apple isn't going to make it that easy for you to switch. Sure, it's unlocked, and it's GSM, but you're going to have to find yourself a MicroSIM from your carrier if you want to use it with your new iPad 3G. Frustrating, huh?

It's not as bad as it seems, though. A GSM MicroSIM is pin compatible with a standard SIM. All you have to do is trim away the excess material and you'll have yourself a DIY MicroSIM. Now you can use your $5.99 T-Mobile EDGE plan or hop on to Vodaphone if you're abroad.

3G or no 3G?  How much will I use it outside of the house?

Will it be a pain in the ass to buy the first day/week it's available in Canada?

What kind of cases are people using?

So many iPad questions.

Canada release date is 5/28 and I'm getting one, hopefully while I'm on my lunch hour at work, although I have a feeling I'll have to wait until the next week or longer...

the only deterrent for me (when i get one) is even talking it outside, and fears of dropping it.  that point alone i know would keep me from leaving my

own wi-fi. but i guess if you work inside thats a whole different story; guess it wouldnt be so bad to pull an ipad out of a briefcase or backpack.  But

then jobs have wi-fi dont they.   And one last point.  if i would get the 3g, i guess it would make me use it.  just because of the fact its gunna be

As if you needed another reason to buy an iPad - VLC has an iPad app, which allows you to load any video files onto the device and play them back in VLC.

Perfectly terrible timing, considering I've spent the last few months converting video files into m4v with the intention of playing them on the iPad.

QuoteApple's AT&T exclusivity has officially ended, at least as far as the iPad is concerned. Because at the end of this month, the tablet is coming to Verizon.

Verizon's iPad appears to be the same model as AT&T carries, which means that for 3G access you'll have to purchase a bundle with a Verizon MiFi mobile hotspot. Pricing seems competitive: an 16GB Wi-Fi iPad bundled with MiFi will cost $630, 32GB Wi-Fi iPad + MiFi will be $730, and 64GB Wi-Fi iPad plus MiFi will be $830. The MiFi data plan will apparently offer up to 1GB of data for $20/month, no contract required.

Wi-Fi only models will also be sold, and while pricing for those hasn't been announced yet it's hard to imagine that it'd be appreciably different from AT&T's offering. There's no mention in the release of if or when you can preorder, although you can "sign up for more information" here.

It's not all bad news for AT&T; Apple's incumbent carrier will begin selling the iPad in its own stores on October 28th as well. Although this does seems to lend even more credence to those early 2011 Verizon iPhone reports, which should make you as happy as it makes AT&T nervous.

QuoteVerizon Wireless Offers iPad at Stores Nationwide on October 28
BASKING RIDGE, N.J. & CUPERTINO, Calif.—(BUSINESS WIRE)— Verizon Wireless and Apple® today announced that iPad™ will be available at over 2,000 Verizon Wireless Stores nationwide beginning Thursday, October 28. Verizon Wireless will offer three bundles, all featuring an iPad Wi-Fi model and a Verizon MiFi 2200 Intelligent Mobile Hotspot, for a suggested retail price of $629.99 for iPad Wi-Fi 16GB + MiFi, $729.99 for iPad Wi-Fi 32GB + MiFi and $829.99 for iPad Wi-Fi 64GB + MiFi. Verizon Wireless is offering a monthly access plan to iPad customers of up to 1GB of data for just $20 a month. In addition, Verizon Wireless will also offer all three iPad Wi-Fi models on a stand-alone basis.
"This is the perfect pairing for holiday travels," said John Stratton, chief operating officer for Verizon Wireless. "iPad together with the nation's largest and most reliable 3G data network allows customers to easily connect on the go wherever they are."
"We're thrilled to be working with Verizon Wireless to get iPad into the hands of even more customers this holiday season," said Tim Cook, Apple's COO. "iPad allows users to connect with their apps and content in a more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before, and together with Verizon Wireless we're offering an easy way to stay connected wherever you go."
iPad allows users to browse the web, read and send email, enjoy and share photos, watch HD videos, listen to music, play games, read ebooks and much more, all using iPad's revolutionary Multi-Touch™ user interface. iPad Wi-Fi models are just 0.5 inches thick and weigh just 1.5 pounds-thinner and lighter than any laptop or netbook-and deliver up to 10 hours of battery life.*
Apple's App Store℠ offers iPad users access to the world's largest catalog of apps with over 280,000 apps and more than 30,000 iPad specific apps in 20 categories, including games, business, news, sports, health, reference and travel. With Apple's iBookstore℠, the best way to browse, buy and read books on a mobile device, iPad users have access to more than 100,000 books from major and independent publishers.
MiFi 2200 is small enough to fit in a pocket and allows customers to create a personal Wi-Fi cloud capable of sharing the high-speed Internet connectivity of the Verizon Wireless 3G Mobile Broadband network with up to five Wi-Fi-enabled devices. The MiFi 2200's rechargeable battery provides up to four hours of active use and 40 hours of standby time on a single charge.
Customers can sign up for more information on Apple's iPad together with Verizon Wireless' MiFi 2200 at www.verizonwireless.com/iPad (http://www.verizonwireless.com/iPad), at any Verizon Wireless Communications Store or by calling 1-800-2 JOIN IN.
*Battery life depends on device settings, usage and other factors. Actual results vary.

to me it's much more than just flash that this solves. The virtual machine you are connected to has a gigabit internet connection for both upload and download. It's insanely fast... and all it feeds to your ipad is video and sound.

Would it be cool if it was feeding you OSX instead of Windows 7? Of course. But that probably ain't gonna happen any time soon. At least it's feeding you a full OS with real Office applications and everything.

I love reading things like this: "The new iPad is sporting 21Mbps HSPA+, but it's also rocking an LTE radio capable of pulling down 73Mbps on both Verizon and AT&T here in the US." (http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/07/the-new-ipad-is-official/) Well, if HSPA+ actually offered anything approaching 21 Mbps in any real-world scenario, there'd be little reason for LTE, wouldn't there? Basically, the numbers are good for nothing more than breathless rattling off.

Here on my HSPA+ capable iPhone 4S, I just got 1.33 Mbps down. In testing, I've never gotten anything higher than 4.46 Mbps. Usually somewhere in the 1-3 range is more common.

There are plenty of reasons for offering LTE.
The core being that HSPA and LTE are not offered by the same providers.

Fair enough. (Although for most consumers, this is strictly a speed issue.) But it is funny seeing these theoretical download speeds being bandied about as evidence of how super sweet the technology is, when in the real world jumping to the newer technology still leaves you enjoying only a portion of the theoretical speed capability of the lesser one.

Maybe they realized this will be such a mainstay offering that they'll want to refresh it from time to time, as with their other computers, so giving each iteration a new name would grow tiresome. Maybe this is model identifier iPad3,1.

probably not worth it, less moving parts and all that. definitely not worth it if you're on a yearly upgrade path.

but I plan on keeping this iPad for two years, so I bought it. what was once just a toy is now a huge part of school for me, since I take my notes on pages and use the kindle app for textbooks.

They're pretty much @ $300 on eBay right now.  I would hook someone on the paug (someone I know on the paug, not a random) for $250....Shit cost me $700...pm me if interested, not trying to derail this thread.....

http://gizmodo.com/5892655/one-ios-icon-is-larger-than-the-entire-original-macintosh-screen

QuoteOne iOS Icon Is Larger Than The Entire Original Macintosh Screen
Here are some numbers to blow your mind: The original Macintosh, released in 1984, had a monochrome 512 × 342 pixel display. That was 175,104 points. Today, the icons on iOS are 512 x 512 pixels, drawn from a 16.7 million color palette plus 256 levels of transparency.

28 years ago, a monochrome icon on the Mac was 16 x 16 pixels. It only took 32 bytes of memory. Compare to the 512 x 512 pixels of each iOS' icon. It takes four times the total video memory of the original Mac to represent a single icon in iOS at full size. Of course, iOS' icons are not shown on screen at that size. They are much smaller. Eventually, however, you can be sure that there will be displays that would require that insane pixel density.

What is remarkable is that the absolute size of the icons remains more or less the same. It's an amazing increase in the density of information required to represent the exact same object with the exact same meaning. Eye candy is expensive.

Yeah, the display is really what you notice first.  It's spectacular.  I am upgrading from a iPad 1 so I am really psyched with the whole thing.  Besides the display, not sure how much of a leap it is from the 2, but the colors on this thing are insane.

They must have sold a shit ton of these things, my UPS driver said every single truck in Portland had a box of 20-30 of these to deliver.

This thing is pretty goddamn amazing. Emily fails to see the use. She's like "So it's just a big iPhone?" I guess you just have to use it a bit to realize that it is just another tool for consuming information as the fastest rate possible, in a very eye-popping and enjoyable way.

Decided to do the Squaretrade 2 year warranty. It just seems way too likely that someone is going to drop it and I doubt it can stand a drop like the iphone can. I've maintained hands-off with Lane (4 yrs old) thus far, but it can't last forever. I just had to purchase the Where's Waldo HD app. Couldn't help myself. But once he gets a crack at it it's gonna be nonstop clamoring.

Technology FTW.

My brother got the ipad 1 the day it came out.  I thought it was pretty cool but didn't feel like I needed on.  I had a touch and a macbook pro.  Fastforward to my Touch getting stolen and I decided to buy an ipad 1.  ONce you dig in to it, it is indispensable.  My wife was the same way too when she first checked it out, now she is all about it.  My kids don't get any media (TV,Internet, video games) so keeping the pad away from them has been a snap so far.  Cross country flights are the only exception.

Having switched from a I, I would agree. It is really just a luxury. While it is a little faster and a little smaller, the difference is minimal.  The display is superior for sure and it has the camera, but I don't see myself ever using the camera except for FaceTime. The I does everything I need it to, but I am happy with the 3. I will say the dictation feature works great and is more accurate than Siri in my experience so far.

Quote.   List of iPad gripes goes on and on - latimes.com

So you have one of the 3 million-plus new iPads sold over the last week. What's not to love about it? We've got a running list:

Say what, no Siri?

Most people thought that Siri on the new iPad was a gimme. Nope. Instead it has a scaled back version -- dictation. The feature is quite good, but you can't tell your iPad to look anything up or schedule appointments. Matt Peckham of Time's Techland surmised that Siri just wasn't ready for the iPad. Jason D. O'Grady at ZDNet, however, thinks it comes down to making sense of dollars, that Apple may be reserving it for the phone: "If you want Siri, buy an iPhone. Plain and simple."

Bigger to be better

The new iPad is a little heavier than the iPad 2, thanks to the better graphics processor and more powerful battery. About one-tenth of a pound heavier, according to the specs. That really doesn't sound like much, but it can start to matter if you hold your iPad in one hand for long periods or have any kind of repetitive stress injury. It also becomes more noticeable if you add a case to the equation.

The other aspect of weight has to do with the apps that are designed for Retina display. Sure, they look better, but fatter apps eat up more storage on the device. The Verge noted that these apps can be up to five times bigger. A dramatic example of an app getting fatter is Tweetbot, which grew from under 10 MB to 25 MB in its Retina-ready update.

And it's not just a problem for owners of the new iPad. Those of us legacy owners of the original and iPad 2 who have these apps get to feel the pain too, since updates aren't device specific.

Sizzler?

The hot-selling device can reach up to 116 degrees during intensive use, according to a test by the Consumer Reports.

To boost power and longevity, mobile device batteries have to pack more energy into the same space. Apple says the new iPad's battery lasts 10 hours, which is about the same as the earlier models. But the new device has a far more sophisticated screen and graphics processor, both requiring more power to operate than the earlier models.

Drop it like it's hot

No, whatever you do, don't drop it.

Tests from warranty seller SquareTrade showed that the new iPad suffered greater damage than iPad 2 when dropped from waist and shoulder heights. From waist height, the damage to the third-gen iPad was fairly extensive. "Only a small portion of the screen survived," one of the testers said in the video. From shoulder height, the damage appears to extend beyond the screen, with severe cracking along the body of the iPad underneath the shattered glass. The whole screen was about to come off after the drop, the testers said.

Charge!

PCWorld tested 43 tablets and found that the third-gen iPad takes the longest -- almost six hours -- to fully recharge its battery. The magazine also found that it was super sluggish charging in a test of at least five consecutive hours of plugged-in use. "In that time, the battery gauge simply didn't budge."

Along the same lines,  DisplayMate found that 100% doesn't necessarily mean fully charged. "I measure the power actually drawn by the AC Adapter and found that the new iPad continues to charge for up to one hour after it claims to reach 100%," said Ray Soneira, president of DisplayMate Technologies.

The problem there is that it can affect the iPad battery's run time, he said, if you unplug the device when the indicator hits 100%, thinking it's finished juicing up.

Data drain

USA Today's Edward C. Baig writes that while you'll love the blistering speed of the 4G iPad, you won't love blowing through your monthly data allotment, or the cost of using data when Wi-Fi is unavailable. How fast? Baig busted his $30 2GB plan with Verizon in just 24 hours. And he was just downloading apps he already owned through Apple's iCloud.

Wiggy Wi-Fi

A number of customers have been complaining on the Apple Support page about weaker Wi-Fi connection, as Gizmodo pointed out. This has some wondering whether it's another Antennagate.

One discussion thread with about 250 replies so far features account after account of flagging reception on the new iPad. An example of the complaints, from Sully2003: "Will not hold WIFI for more than a few minutes. Two MacBooks and iPhone working fine from same router. Ready to return iPad!!!!!"

Another owner, HeathClif, writes, "I am SO disappointed with the iPad 3....the wifi is driving me nuts.  My wheel keeps spinning waiting for pages to connect while lying on my bed.  I have VERY high speed.  I went and got my iPad 2 to compare - and sure enough, the connections are just whizzing on old faithful.   What is UP? "

Yeah, first day I got it, I noticed how hot it got.  The iPad 1 that I had didn't even get the slightest bit warm even after like 4 hours of constant use on an airplane.  Once I turned down the brightness on the 3 to a more manageable level, the heat drastically reduced, but you can still feel it.  It seems to charge fairly quickly, but loses charge faster than the 1.  Not too bad, but noticeable.  I don;t notice the weight at all (seems comparable to the 1) and the wifi has worked great so far.  Not a single hitch and I use it all day at my office.  But the heat thing does blow.  Putting brightness to 75% made it way better though.  Still tripping on how sharp the display is.  New York Times is amazing on it.

Agree that the original iPad had no market to fill - but people found a role for it.

I think the iPad mini will be great for commuters and students, but I read magazines and watch TV on my iPad, the bigger screen is better suited to it's role in my life.

when I was in europe in June, lots of people were using ipads as a camera. for some, the smaller size may be more convenient as a hybrid device. If I was going to carry around one at work, like lots of people do, a smaller device may be advantageous, depending upon the keyboard.

I think it makes perfect sense. Other manufacturers were able to come in and compete on price with the iPad by offering a smaller device. That concept being validated, now Apple can offer their own lower-price item to pick up those consumers who just aren't willing to spend what a full-size iPad costs.

Updated to the newest version of iTunes today, totally hate it. It is conflating my iPod and iPad libraries which I keep separate, and can't access 95% of my iPod library.

Going to be a long day figuring this out  :-( Love iTunes, but I don't know why they reinvent the fucking wheel with each new version.

It took me a while to sort out where everything was, but I think the re-design makes sense.

I hope by the time they roll out iTunes 12 they rebrand it and figure out a way to separate the music player from the iOS device manager.

I've been ignoring the update cue on my Mac. Is this the update you're talking about?

I did notice I had trouble finding certain albums on my phone (under the artist tab)about a month ago. Took me a while to figure out and it still isn't quite right. For instance, A Hard Days Night comes out as unknown album. This is an improvement over not showing up at all under the Beatles

Yes.

Took some research and a tutorial which I haven't needed to do since I bought my first iPod eons ago, but I am more comfortable with this now. Toggling between libraries on a Windows Vista machine was never easy to do, and seems harder now, but I do appreciate the change in font, and I re-established to the best extent possible the look of older versions. I can see getting used to how they have albums sorted if I can ever come up with artwork for everything. I have never found anything better to manage music than iTunes, and really dislike when they mess with that portion of the software. When it becomes a chore, screws everything up downstream.

I've used skyfire.  It will analyze a page for video. If there is flash video that the iPad won't play, it basically uses their server to play it and feed it to you in a streaming format. You can watch the video but you cannot slide a slider back and forth to ff or rewind like you can with any other video format. It's annoying, so I very rarely use it.

I'm just now reading through these last few pages. So does the VLC app allow you to play FLAC files on your phone?

I think they've made a bit of a branding error with all these iPads now, iPad 2, iPad Mini, iPad Mini Retina and iPad Air. Seriously?

Agreed.
I would be more inclined to get a new mini today rather than an air.

Loving this iPad air.  So light. Retna display so clear. So much faster at literally everything.

The best part is I'm getting $200 from Amazon for my old ipad 2.

The only crappy thing is I'm stuck with this old 2006 Macbook Pro for a while longer. My plan was to get a new Mac Mini if they updated them at this last go-round. They did not... so new ipad and wait on the new mac for the office.

So my wife and I are planning to join the revolution for christmukkah or whatever you call our thing. Anyhow, I'm wondering if any of y'all have any recommendations on a case/cover.  Both our nearly 5yo son and 2yo daughter will likely be using it a bunch as well, so we are leaning more toward protection versus lightweight nonbulkiness. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Price is not really a factor...

I have a Zagg case and keyboard. It has a hard shell and seems to protect the ipad fairly well.

Can you tell a big difference from your older model in terms of speed and weight?  I always figured I'd upgrade at some point.

This is my first ipad and it's way faster and lighter then my last.

Wait.

But seriously, I've never owned one, only used other folks' from time to time so, while part of me thinks that it knows the thing is lighter, rational brain knows that I can't really tell the difference without a head-to-head check.

I'd wait.  I have an ipad2 and an iPad Air from work (32gb).  It's nice that it's lighter and the display is better but they haven't improved the device substantially.

Ha, yeah, well, I'd say that qualifies.

Antelope, I am with Matt, I am holding out as well. I've messed around with some Air's which my fellow nurses have brought to work, and I am not all that blown away. They are lighter, but my "New" iPad Retina's weight has never really bogged me down.

I have a feeling I'll be buying mini 2's with retina for my daughters before I get a new one of my own.

Anyone out there still using an iPad 2? If so, what version of iOS do you have on it? I've been hesitant to upgrade past 7.x for a couple years now, on account of not wanting to cripple the thing, but I'm now finding that a lot of the apps I want to use these days require 8 or even 9. Reports out there indicate poor performance by those versions on this model. I'd be interested to hear of any first-hand experiences.

Running the latest 9 on mine, which is really just my daughter's iPad at this point - it works fine for Youtube and her toddler games/apps, really no problem with almost anything I throw at it.  If I were using it as my daily, I'm sure I'd have a problem with it being laggy, but I don't really notice much, though in fairness, I have nearly all notifications and other features turned OFF!

Same here. Running 9 and I use it the thing everyday. It is slower than it used to be, but nothing crazy.
