I don't really think Bonnaroo is inconvient at all, in fact bringing huge acts to a few stages for 4-straight days is pretty convienent if you ask me.
If you want to see a festival with a pretty shitty lineup, it might be pretty easy to get around, but you'll have a shitty time... not very convienent.

Not trying to argue here but one could argue pretty easily that Bonnaroo is inconvenient.
I was in the Guest camping area so getting in and out was no problem for me, but everyone else I knew who went this past summer spent around 6 or more hours waiting in line to get into the fest. Factor in that getting into centeroo can be a total hassle, navigating the HUGE fest grounds ain't too easy, and if you're camped far away it can be a pain in the ass to walk 30 minutes in the hot sun JUST to get to centeroo. Not to mention, good luck getting close to the main stage. That is, unless you want to stake out a spot and not move for 5 hours...
I like the small fests.
Having been to bonnaroo and a ton of other fests, the only thing more convenient is a tiny fest with a ton of shitty bands (and more limited amenities) or staying home and bitching about it.

Unless you're trying to walk right up to the stage during a headliner, you can always get close enough to get to a spot where you can see the stage and the sound is perfect.
Don't like it? The VIP area on the hill is a good place to catch the show.

I associate small fests with mediocre jambands, mostly because that's who play them. You don't see Neil Young, Herbie Hancock or Radiohead at small fests, and that's why Bonnaroo is best.
Hey, I had a good time at roo last year. I would consider going again this year if phish is there.
As I said, I wasn't trying to stir the pot - however, I wouldn't call Bonnaroo the easiest fest for getting around. It's huge, and there are both pros (more acts) and cons (time spent getting around) to that...
edit to add: I like your VIP suggestions - like I said I was in Guest last year which is actually closer than VIP (and has its own really close entrance to the main stage). I had a great time at roo last year, but it's huge and without the sorts of amenities I had last year I can't see myself doing it again.
but re: the VIP thing - good suggestions, but certainly not on my budget.
I have experienced all of the things you guys are complaining about at the 5 Phish fests I've attended. I think it's just the fact of the matter when you're dealing with large crowds gathered for good music. I have no problem walking 30 mins for 3 sets of Phish or (insert your fav band here). I have even been know to walk said 30 mins back to camp to refuel and get back during setbreak. :beerbang:
If you don't like these 'inconveniences', it may be best to get a VIP pass or watch the stream from home.
easy folks, I've been to Roo twice several years ago and always had a great time. I'm excited to see the lineup come out as well. my comments were based on my experience, yes, unfortunately even the knot one.
Roo is a lot of fun, and truly amazing things happen there, but it's a tough argument to make that it is NOT a hot, sweaty, crowded , pain in the ass. doesn't mean I am not a fan of the fest or that I wouldn't attend if I loved the lineup and had the means.

I guess my thing with Bonnaroo last year (the only year I went) was that I only went for phish. There were a few other bands on the lineup that I looked forward to seeing (Snoop, Galactic, Wilco, Toubab Krewe) but for the most part I got the vibe that the fest was going really "indie" (TV on the Radio, Mars Volta, Yeah Yeah Yeah's, MGMT, of montreal, Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear) - That type of music isn't bad, its just really not my thing.
This band passion pit I saw was terrible though. I didn't understand how people considered it music. And all the little indie-hipster kids were eating it up.
Like I said, that was my first year at bonnaroo so this may be unjustified but, I think it's changed a lot. Looking at the lineups from 02, 03 - I dunno, I think I would have much rather wanted to "suck it up" and deal with any sort of hardships with lineups like they used to have.
For 'roo to continue to be a relevant fest it has to attract 20-somethings consistently. That is what they do best. In 2002 20-somethings were into jambands. In 2009 they were into indie bands. 2010 promises to be more of the same. I can't fault 'roo for that.

Despite a large number of "Indie" rock acts you could hit up Bonnaroo and not see a single "Indie" band.
There are so many ways to spend your day, so much different music to see - if you would try and see 10 or more of the bands in the lineup, it's worth going.
Couldn't agree more. I spent almost two full days in one tent (Mattstick knows which one). They just killed it with one full day of Afro-beat and one full day of Bluegrass. It was like a mini-fest of each genre. Though to beat that... that's something they are learning from Jazzfest, I think. If you make one tent a themed tent you will have people there all day. It works!
Having said that, I'm doing both weekends of Jazzfest this year, so Bonnaroo is likely not in the cards. It's Sophie's choice as usual.

Pretty sure it was "The Other Tent". Good times.
So far the lineup isn't blowing my mind, and the rumored headliners won't get me there either.

Just because it's packed full of people doesn't make it a great music festival. When I went in '06, it seemed that the three or four acts I was most excited about all weekend happened to all be playing at or around the same time. The rest of the weekend I was forced to watch Big Nazo or something else I didn't give a rat's ass about (it wasn't actually big nazo, I'm just using that as an example.) That combined with the sheer number of people was very offputting to me. I think I'll stick to smaller festivals (allgood anyone?)

I mostly went because my dad and I were driving across Tenn. visiting colleges anyway. Due to some crafty scheduling, we just happened to be passing by that way on Friday. It seemed like an opportunity not to be passed up. I'm glad I went, and I likely will not go back.

'Roo brings a damn good lineup every year and is amazingly executed for the most part.
I have never been to Bonaroo and would not bitch any more about it than any fest. My days of hitting fests are over as I find it just too exhausting trying to travel form stage to stage all day. I like my day for relaxing as I get ready to rage the evening away. The last couple of fests I went to in 2006-07, I was disappointed in myself for missing acts just due to pure exhaustion.

ALLnotGOOD fucking blows. They can get some good bands but everything else is shitty about that place. The way they run things and tread people is deplorable. All walther cares about is green paper. It's more ghetto each year and each year the staff gets worse and worse. I know its volunteer work, but you have to make sure you are picking the right volunteers. Not 15yo kids who are too scrared/dumb/careless to do their jobs.
The last time I went to AllGood I saw prostitution, dope peddling going on about 20ft from my RV. I was offered some dude girlfriend in trade for smack at one point. Oh, and not to forget the dude who was pistolwhipped and stabbed. And from what I hear, if you have a good head on your shoulders you are basically too scared to even go up on top of the hill now (that are is basically 100% run by the nitrous mafia now).

Yeah it's been declining in recent years...I heard there was a cop presence last year though and it was a bit cleaner that it was the year before... Not that that makes it any better...
The lineup last year looked awesome, but I didn't go. I'm considering working (not volunteering) for the production company that puts it on this summer so if I can get a free ticket AND get paid to be there, I might go... depends on the lineup I guess.

The lineup last year looked awesome, but I didn't go. I'm considering working (not volunteering) for the production company that puts it on this summer so if I can get a free ticket AND get paid to be there, I might go... depends on the lineup I guess.
The lineup this year is looking pretty f-ing solid. I may just save my $$ for Phish but then again, I could probably con my dad into buying me Even Better passes as a graduation present. And then my weekend would be (nearly) grunge-free.

I've sprained my ankle, broken my camera, lost (and subsequently found) my wallet, and been pummeled by torrential downpours at Allgoods in the past, but never have I had anything stolen. Just park your car in circle cove, lock anything important in there, and if you have anything truly valuable just don't bring it.
My Philosophy at any festival: Don't leave anything in your tent that you would be really upset about losing. I hate that I have to think that way, but that's just the way it is. When I go off for the day to explore/see the show, I generally only leave a pillow, sleeping pad, and sleeping bag.

Went this past weekend for the first time since 2004 and had an incredible time. I knew it would be fun but I had way more fun then I thought I would.
Phish was a great way to end the weekend. I thought set two was solid 3.0, but it appears most around here disagree. I got a spot on on the rail right in the pit. I don't think Mike's bass will ever feel that awesome again.
Other standout sets included St. Vincent (possible best set of the whole weekend, that girl is insane), Skrillex LN Which (again I got in the pit for this one. crazy energy), Flying Lotus LN (I GO HARD IN THE MUTHAFUCKIN PAINT), SBTRKT, The Word LN, of course Radiohead, even if the Houston show I went to earlier this year was better, and many many more acts.
I stayed in a hotel in Murfreesboro. Getting sleep definitely helped my energy level tremendously.
Anyway I thought it necessary to return here and say I was wrong. Bonnaroo is an extremely well run festival. They had tons of water stations and lots of tents setup just for shade purposes. The lines weren't too long, and all the volunteers I had contact with were friendly and professional. I was worried the crowd would be a bit bro'd out, but I have to say I only encountered a handful of assholes the whole weekend, everyone else I had extremely positive experiences with.
I'll be back next year regardless of the lineup.
