Sorry, everyone.

Lawn Boy didn't go 30 minutes after all.

Guess I'll tell the children there'll be no Christmas this year.

One of the best 3.0 shows I have heard.
One of those shows the two 30 minute jams just kinda leaked into the rest so even though not the best song selection, it was amazing

Now we know they can. It wasn't just one of those nights. They set it up in advance that they'd be jamming, and they repeatedly pulled shit out of their ass and killed it all night long. If they can do that when the pressure is on to do that, then they clearly are capable of turning it on and off whenever they want.

Why haven't they jammed like that for a whole show in ages? Did they practice that much before this tour?

ETA: my post count is how tonight felt for me (1994, for posterity)

Listened to set 1. wow
30 min Lawn boy is cool, but the jams in Sample, My Friend, and Gin were beautiful. Stash was right on point, can stand up to 1.0 versions
Title: Re: 2017-07-25 MSG, New York, NY
Post by: Gumbo72203 on July 27, 2017, 11:58:32 AM
So I gotta revisit the whole thing, but at the time I felt like during Stash and Gin that the band were a little gassed, running on fumes.  Granted, it could have simply been because they totally blew their fucking load during Sample and Lawn Boy.  What a start to a show.  Best show opening ever?

Also, those dudes on Phish.net need to chill the fuck out.  This show is not better than Cypress lol.  Get real.  It's certainly legendary, but come on.  One jam-filled show over a 7-hour jam-filled set?  It seems like this is biased towards the kydz who were there, and who weren't old enough to get to Cypress.

Anyway, this band is unreal right now.  I knew this day would come.  I knew it would.  Despite all the 11-song second sets, 6-minute Ghosts, 3-minute Tubes, ripcorded jams and The Whale, I knew this was still here.  They just needed an excuse to bring it out.

The big question is whether or not they had enough fun to do this at regular shows now.  I should hope they saw the audience response........

Given the band's reaction to these past two nights, I gotta believe the answer is yes. Not every night maybe, but more often than they have been. The monster grin on Trey's face over Page's shoulder as Page was destroying the intro to No Quarter last night warmed my heart.

Gotta be careful tho. Expectations are a helluva dr00g.

I remember tickets for the others weekend shows started selling out by the next day. This was the show that prompted a lot of people to book flights to catch at least some of the rest of the run.

This show and the fact that everyone was starting to think they'd go the whole run without repeats generated alot of talk and action. I was going the last weekend already, but instantly everyone else wanted in.

i really wonder how this was orchestrated.  we all saw trey charting out the songs for each night in his documentary.  and it was obvious that they had to jam pretty hard to pull off this run.  so, did trey come up with jam night or was that just something that came out of full band/mgmt meetings?

because of the fact that they had hundreds (thousands?) of donuts each night, the nightly flavors had to be predetermined pretty far in advance of the entire run.  they also had access to ticket presale numbers and they obviously saw the first tuesday was the least sold of them all.

i always thought managing 3.0 phish would be kinda easy.  the fanbase is rabid.  tickets and merch sell like hotcakes.  your job is to make all of trey's wild ideas a reality.  take care of your golden goose...that's it.  so how much credit does management deserve for putting jam night on the least popular night?  or was this the band with another classic you snooze you lose night?  i'd be curious to know how many tickets sold in the 24 hours between the announcement of jam night and the actual show.  and did they foresee jam night being a catalyst to sell more tickets to future shows?  i'm sure no one predicted the insane demand for tickets that would take place 9 shows later, but by playing strong shows at the beginning, it wouldn't be hard to think you'd increase sales, especially considering how relatively easy it was for people to get to msg in the summer.

rj, we need a phish management podcast!

Also the fact they chose Lawn Boy to kick off the jams is pretty awesome and unexpected to me.

totally unexpected and awesome!  but thinking about it after the fact, it made total sense for them to take a 3 minute song for a 30 minute ride in the interest of filling 13 nights.
