I guess it comes down to a matter of taste, because while I see your point in the Tweeprise peak from 22:00 - 25:00 being a volume thing, I think the tension of Mike and Fish (which is heard MUCH MUCH better on the SBD) is what really drives it home.

Its Trey doing a chordal style of soloing, which i like hearing him do a lot.

Weren't you bangin' opiates outside of that SPAC show?
Maybe that's why you have such a deep connection with it.

I was outside the fence that show, but I think the 2nd night was my extracurriculars.

I mean, the Piper converted me from death metal.  I went to 6/19/04 as a vehement anti-Phish person.  VEHEMENT.  I was still playing in Angeldeath at the time lol.  This is legit the Morbid Angel shirt I wore to that show:

hahahaha.

Its hilarious, though, because Morbid Angel's "Formulas" is like, the jam-band death metal album.  Its SOOO fucking psychedelic, dripping with cosmic goo.  Trey improvised all of his solos, and used all these gnarly recording techniques, like placing a fan between the mic and cabinet, putting the mic in a giant glass bowl, etc.

The feeling I get when I listen to "Covenant of Death", *ESPECIALLY* the ending, is the same feeling as the 11/7/98 ACDC Bag's epic ending jam, or any version of Whats The Use?.  Cosmic.  Power.

Trey is the Jerry Garcia of death metal, by the way.  Uber-philosopher.  Morbid Angel used to play acid parties in Florida during the early 80's; the bands creation just about exactly mirrors the Dead's in terms of they got together, playing this gnarly music at acid parties, etc.

ugh I love it.  haha

Well, its death metal.  Its not for everybody lol.

I'm actually SUPER curious, what songs did you check out?

The 3 that I would recommend for seeing their psychedelic side are "Covenant of Death", "I", and "Prayer of Hatred".

Sit through this, *I PROMISE* you'll see what I'm talking about.  Plus, you CAN dance to it.  I do.

The middle part was pretty cool, and I can appreciate the intensity of the rhythm, though the drum beat seemed excessive and made it completely undance-able.  I just can't accept vocals like that.  I really fail to see how anyone could, though obviously some people do.  one at least.

Opeth, I think, is a nice mix of death metal music with mellow vocals, although Mikel Owhateverthefuckhisnameis does growl, too.

Saw this band (Delicious) open for Lake Trout way back when...  The drummer was the sound-guy for Trout...

Its as close to Jam-Metal as I've ever seen...

I love Opeth.  Of course, I was rockin out to Slayer and Celtic Frost back in the 80s, so the cookie monster vocals don't really phase me.

Yeah I mean, death metal is just an extreme art form.  The vocals aren't about singing.  Its about energy, conviction, and fucking power.  Pure raging energy.

Its just a different thing; its not about singing in key.

This is probably one of their most penetrating psychedelic onslaughts...  the ending is just....  ugh.  It actually chills out, and gets super Pink Floyd-y.  This is where the cosmos open up, and the stillness of your mind allows the vibrational fabric to meld into a one-ness imperceptible during mundane day-to-day life.  And the guitar solos!!!!  UGH.

I fucking love Baroness, seen em live three times, but I think their last album is the least metal thing they have done yet.  their vocals and Slayer's and most of the metal I listen to are more yelling than anything.  it's that guttural stuff I don't like.  except Sepultura.  they rule.

you guys need to know ISIS.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4EUj8Vf8K4&feature=related

Probably the actually closest thing to Jam/metal.  Their sound is super heavy combined with some of the deep space Fall '97 psychedelia.  At least thats what it makes me feel like... the same feeling.  Deeeeep, deeeeep shit.

Fucking ugh, the first few minutes of the opening track are SO brilliant.  And then you have the pinnacle song, "Weight", which isn't metal at all, its more like Mogwai, a climbing, escalating ascension of beauty and power with awesome chick vox.

Seriously, if you guys get into anything heavy, Isis will do it for you.  I promise.  They're SO unique.  Its beautiful heavy music.  Kind of like Neurosis, I suppose...

Isis is good stuff. Stoner Metal is a pretty well known genre — "jam-metal"s slower bpm sibling

i grew up on 80's thrash metal and will have a soft spot for it forever.  however, if i didn't listen to it back in the day, i find it hard to get into now...with the exception of My Dying Bride and Machine Head.

i look forward to checking out all the links in this thread over the next few days.  my stoner buddy has been trying to get me into Opeth for years.  if you like them he also recommends Arcturus, Amorphis, and Borknagar - i know nothing about any of these bands.

I knew you'd get them.  I just really finally got into the album they put out afterwards, "Panopticon".  Its a little too pristine-sounding for my taste; part of Oceanic's brilliance is the sound.  Its clean, but its got edge.  But the material on Panopticon is brilliant, although the clean vocals are ehhhh for me.

Borknagar is AWESOME, although might be a little on the extreme side for people here.  They are SO melodic, though.  And they incorporate this really interesting kind of "folk vocal" over the black metal main vocals.  Wait til you get to the break at 1:40.  Sit through the blast beats, you'll be okay trust me.

Amorphis I LOVE because they incorporate a metal element into a more traditional rock song format.

This might be one of my favorite songs, ever, period with some of my favorite melodies, EVER.

Quote'Dracula' Icon Christopher Lee Becomes Oldest Musician to Chart on Billboard at 91 Years Old
One song off Lee's 2013 Christmas disc is 'Jingle Hell,' a heavy metal take on 'Jingle Bells.'  The track rules, by the way, and at 91 years old, Christopher Lee became the oldest musician to hit Billboard as 'Jingle Hell' nabbed the No. 22 spot on the 'Hot 100′ chart. As of this posting 'Jingle Hell' is up to No. 18.

Seems relevant...

My buddy Alex, I think I've mentioned here before, has been fronting Brownout for the last couple of years whenever they have taken on their Brown Sabbath alter ego. Ozzie himself caught the band at Ozzfest in Mexico and declared Alex "the Mexican Ozzie."

They are about to release a second Brown Sabbath album... unfortunately, I think it'll be the last one. It sounds like they're ready to put the alter ego to rest. It's been fun, but not what they want to be known for.

That said, Invisible Oranges asked Alex to write an op-ed on why Latinos embrace heavy metal so damn much. It's well written and a great read. Check it out:

I wish they ran into me!  I would have totally schooled them on the merits of Type II '99 jamming and then gone into how Altars of Madness was groundbreaking for death metal because Pete Sandoval basically invented the modern blast beat technique with that one, and how Suffocation's old material still holds up because Pierced From Within is a monster, and also how Entombed's "Left Hand Path" basically invented the Swedish death metal style with their use of the Boss HM-2 pedal to get that buzzsaw guitar tone.  Glorious stuff.

I would have blown their mind.

So Saturday night we went to see our friend from high school play in his new band, Pillars (they're post-rock instrumental metal), at a metal themed brewery called Black Circle. I asked the bartender for one of their brewery stickers for my beer sticker cabinet and he gave me these two awesome stickers! I forgot about the stickers until my wife pulled them out of her purse this morning.

Visual aesthetic was great. Immersive, but all really tasteful. They aren't putting on a show by jumping all around on stage – it was all about the music (and yes a crazy cool stage design).

For Metallica it would be, but I think the comparison he's drawing is 16:9 HD video vs. 4:3 SD

the mustaine era would be 1.0, wouldn't it, lol.  there's no 1.0s and 2.0s, etc in metallica.  that's not where i was going.

i thought these nightly webcasts were just big commercials for nugs.tv.  look at our fancy high quality webcasts, don't you want your band to be webcast, don't you want to buy our products, kinda thing.  khalpin nailed it.  the fact that nugs.tv is even agreeing to broadcast some old crappy VHS footage, which i'm going to LOVE, is surprising to me and gives me a bit of hope for something pre 2009 for the phish.

that was yesterday's soundtrack!  i saw them a few years ago in Joliet, it was a blast.  their singer is probably the most energetic frontman i've ever seen, he was like a cross between Dio and Sam Kinison.

that's the place, though I think it was called Mojo's at the time.  it was 2015, they opened for Cavalera Conspiracy.  COC Blind was supposed to play, but it ended up being Karl Agell's other band King Hitter.  that dude can really sing, you can tell he has some formal training.  and Max Cavalera has the craziest dreadlock (yes, it was singular) I've ever seen.  they played Territory and Refuse/Resist, it was awesome

It's a remake of their 1986 demo, which has the Chilling Thrilling samples too.

Actually if you are into electronic music and shit, samples from that record have always popped up in random places.

Anyway, it's kind of a bummer that the "new" Bungle stuff is just straight thrash metal IMO. Their 90s albums changed my life.

Oh yeah, this is the "djent' sub-genre that basically takes the Meshuggah blueprint and adds to it.  There's a lot of great bands in this framework:  Periphery, Animals as Leaders, Tesseract, Cloudkicker, Intronaut and my favorite - The Contortionist

I think you'll find this album to your taste:

TOOL released Opiate2 today! It's a 10 minute re-recording of Opiate, featuring the stuff they've been doing with it live the last few decades. It's pretty fuckin' stellar!! There's a Blu-Ray coming out in a few weeks of the accompanying video.

It's not on Youtube to link, but it's on all the streaming services. I just finished my 2nd run through on Amazon Music.

No, the $810 $750 version is a signed edition they are selling on tour. I did custy up for the non-signed version, a 5LP set for $160.

The Opiate 'repress' is actually a Blu-Ray of the song released today. I used some of my Zia Records points to get it for 50% off, so that only cost me $12.50!

so, tickets go onsale this week for metallica at soldier field.  show is in the round so there will be a huge capacity.  pantera opening.  this is normally a show i'd be all over, but the concert isn't until AUGUST OF 2024.  what the hell is this?  i don't know how i feel about giving metallica  a 2 year loan, not to mention i don't exactly know my travel schedule for then!?

That's beyond ridiculous.  Fuck them.  Put your money in iBonds and then buy tickets from scalpers in a year and a half.  You'll probably end up with better seats.  Looks like the entire tour is Friday and Sunday shows.  Makes me think they'll just add a Saturday show if both nights sell out but what do I know....

Meadowlands goes on sale the same day for August 2023.  Crazy

That's a totally foreign concept to metal bands where every single note, step, laser, and bit of pyro is rehearsed for weeks.

It's no different. It's just two shows worth of it. Repeated in each city.

I noticed that.  Wonder if it's a needed rehearsal day?  Speaking of metal...11.30.97 Wolfmans Brother  :beerbang:  :beerbang:

Thanks for the heads up and how was it?  Didn't know they were touring.  I asked my son and he wants to go, so we're going to the Allentown show this Saturday.  It'll be his 2nd show after seeing Maiden back in October.  Haven't seen Anthrax or Exodus since seeing them on the Among the Living/Pleasures of the Flesh tour in '87.

Scott Ian was talking about that tour last night.  I guess Celtic Frost opened?  Exodus was great as always!  And Anthrax was fantastic!  Super high energy, Joey sounded great, played a great setlist.  Except they played Only.  Super weird to hear Joey sing rhat one.

Nice!  Yeah, it was Exodus and Celtic Frost opening although we got there late and missed Celtic Frost.  Not my fault, I didn't even have a drivers license.  Curious to hear Joey sing Only and super psyched for the show.
