nice thoughts cactusfan.  I was thinking thru that one myself, about the conversations about death and things just going black.

But then on peyote later on in the season, he saw sunrise in the desert and shouted out "I get it!"  And then later revealing that he saw something and figured something out.

Last year the coma.  He was a salesman being drawn into the house where everyone else was (death).

Both of these 2 images show that there was something else beyond death, other than black.  So I'm sorting that out.

I do appreciate the ending now after almost 24 hours.  This was something that no one expected and unique.

i thought it was brilliant. who got whacked at the end? WE DID. david chase whacked the audience. i love it.

the whole show has always been about denying us what we want.

and it's always been about how people never change. they just drove that home all the way through this episode. A.J. was suicidal over the world at large, the only character in the show who really paid any attention to a world outside jersey, and then at the end-- his parents bribe him with a new car and a job working on a crap movie funded by porn producing gangsters. meadow tells tony she's being a lawyer to protect people like tony, because she's seen him dragged away in handcuffs so often, instead of being just another doctor. paulie left sitting in front of the pork store, with no life at all but to serve tony, just like always. in the presence of a shrink, tony reflexively starts talking about his issues with his mother-- right where he was at the start of season one.

lots of awesome little touches. A.J. saying how grear bob dylans' 'it's allright ma i'm only bleeding is' just before his car blows up and the cd melts. a fiery SUV eating bob dylan's music. there's an image.

the FBI guy who feels like he's on tony's side.

that last scene was great. they built so much tension just by cutting to a couple of suspicious characters entering the diner, and meadow strangely unable to park her car. the cheesy journey song with the lyrics 'when a movie never ends it goes on and on and on...." and then, we got whacked. what happens when a character gets whacked? they end, but everyone else in the show just goes back to their lives.

word, nice review bro.

although I was expecting a hit on Tony's family I did enjoy the finale in that it leaves the door open.  Sil is still alive, Pauli, Tony, it wouldn't take much to get it back.
It was cool to see AJ transcend out of his depression esp. when his cheesey Yellow SUV burnt, the way he described it to his therapist was he was finally realizing change on a few levels.

My season highlight was Tony high on mescaline in the desert watching the sun rise and yelling, "I finally get it!"

Give it a couple of years but this saga isn't over with.

that was a nice moment with AJ and his therapist, after which he decides he really has to DO something. so he decides to join the army. and then-- just like his dad, sure he can see what he SHOULD do, but when presented with the easy way out-- a new car, a meaningless job-- he jumps right in, and there we see him on the sofa, just like his dad, with his underage girlfriend laughing his ass off at clips of karl rove and gwb dancing like assholes.

what do you make of tony yelling "i get it!"? seems to me it was just more blatant self-delusion. he gets what? that murdering chris was okay, and that now his luck has changed, as evidenced by his winning on roullette in the scene just prior? the last episode shows that tony gets exactly nothing aside from self-preservation.

i don't see any likelihood of a return to this show ever. as i wrote above, i think the last scene is tony's death, and that the very point is that we won't be seeing where any of these loose threads wind up. when it's over, it's over.

the whole series was just a look into the life of the Sopranos.  i think it just ends, and life goes on...  whatever happens, happens, but we just don't get to watch it.

i took the "i get it" scene to mean that tony somehow found out (through peyote) that there IS indeed something more (or an after life).

The ending was cool, couldn't figure what to make of it, but the whole "audience getting whacked" fits well with the show. I liked how the last episode seemed to bring everything full circle, while at the same time showing us that nothing really changed at all. Tony's therapy never went anywhere, AJ, with his depression and talk of joining the army and making the difference, bribed with a new car and a meaningless job working on a crappy movie, the whole gang war with Phil just ending.

Another thing I noticed in retrospect, which I don't think was mentioned was the fact that Hunter was brought back, for ONE scene, which basicly showed how little the sopranos had changed, Carmella is suprised to hear hard partying Hunter from season 1, is now a second year med-student, which just makes you realise that the Soprano kids are pretty much where they always were. Meadow still isn't entirely sure what she wants to study, AJ, who still acts a lot like he did in Junior high, even his bought of depression wasn't new, considering his whole Nitzche phase from way back...

Anyways, good fuckin' episode.

ok, so i'm a lurker but i really want to talk about this 'Made in America' episode..  I have watched it 4 times now, and I keep thinking about it a lot.  I recorded it and didn't get to watch it until Tuesday.  By that time, I had already accidentally read a few spoilers (they were impossible to miss), and the references to the 'Members Only' jacket had me thinking about Season6's first episode, titled 'Members Only'.  That was the one where Junior shoots Tony, and leads into the next episode where Tony dreams about becoming salesman, Kevin Finerty.  A trippy near-death dream episode.  So that had me already wondering if it was going to be a near death/dream episode.

And I totally think it was.  The whole episode is trippy and dreamy (for example, the airplane going overhead swerving, then the train sounds suddenly stopping when they are in the sitdown.  the return of Hunter for a few seconds, and she is a medstudent (hunter would not have been a med student!) and the people throwing up after phil's head getting crushed, the 1 second scene when tony tells carmella that AJ wants to enlist, and of course Tony watching himself at the restaurant.)  After watching it a few times, I am totally convinced that Tony has died, but I think that he was killed after he fell asleep at the end of the previous episode (he never saw it coming).

The entire final episode is a dream that Tony takes before he finally dies at the very end of the episode.  He dreams this after he gets shot at the end of the previous episode (or should I say 'when he gets shot, after the previous episode ends').  Camella is happy, AJ becomes enlightened, Meadow gets a super fat job offer, Phil acting goofy with babies then getting his head crushed, AJ says, "you are in a dream!", agent harris helping Tony (and the creepy scene when he finds out that Phil has been killed - he slaps the desk and says, "were going to win this thing").   The feds were listening in on Tony's conversation (he had that paranoid thought one last time) Then they go to AJ's psych and she is smiling at Tony as he starts going off about his mother one final time.  And the cat (because it was staring at Christopher, I wonder if it has some reference to Adrianna?  And Silvio getting the pedicure (lol)- that was wierd. When the SUV blows up, the Dylan music starts melting in slow motion as if it were a tape.

The first time I watched this episode, I was convinced it was a dream.  I just thought that at the end, Tony would wake up in the hospital with his family around him (sunday night, drudge report said, "HBO chooses life", so i thought tony had lived.  Drudge also said everyone was mad at the ending- I was thinking that everyone was mad with the episode becuase it was a lame episode...  it turns out that people are mad becuase they just don't get it!) Anyway, instead of Tony waking up with his family around him , it faded to black (or should i say, it slammed black darkness in your face!).

That Journey song is now going through my head.  When AJ reminds Tony to remember the good times is one of the most beautiful moments in Sopranos history.  The episode that Tony takes peyote was amazing, this season was my favorite.  I am totally blown away by the final episode.  I laughed, I cried.

I think he understands what Chris had said about stopping and smelling the roses.  It showed for the first time maybe besides the birth of his children, how profound nature/beauty can be.  It was another step towards enlightenment for Tony.

good analysis by bob harris, who writes an entertaining blog.

i actually wrote a very long analysis beyond what i've posted here, also arguing that it's abundantly obvious tony got whacked, but harris gets at a lot of points i overlooked.

my argument stemmed from something harris talks around throughout his piece, which is that david chase spent an awfully long time creating his finale, and it seems awfully unlikely that all that careful planning was to play a joke on the audience, to just cut things off with the point being, 'hey! there is no end! ha ha!'

but since the cut to black was so very jarring when it happened, all analysis has come from the starting point that chase tricked us-- and then people go from there trying to figure out what depth was in the trick.

if we instead start with the premise that chase wasn't trying to trick us, that he was in fact very carefully setting up tony's death to comport with the notion that when you get whacked, you won't see it coming, everything will just go black, then all the clues point obviously to tony being dead. in that case, chase did a brilliant job. he did everything exactly the way you'd do it if that's what you were setting up.

VA $l!m

i'm not in the know... or even care... but i heard that all the suspicious peeps that were in the dinner were in previous episodes and had beef with tony in the past... therefore the assumption is that there were multiple assasins present.
