On May 11th, Round Records will release an expansive retrospective box set titled Before The Dead which brings together a rare collection of the earliest known performances by Jerry Garcia. From an informal and intimate 1961 performance of simple folk songs at a birthday party with future songwriting partner Robert Hunter to more polished coffeehouse gigs with old-timey and bluegrass bands through 1964, this collection showcases Garcia's deep study of the folk music tradition and its influence on his musical journey leading to the formation of the Grateful Dead. Even with his entire musical career in front of him, Garcia's magnetic presence as a performer can be plainly heard in these first steps.

Before The Dead is produced and curated by longtime Grateful Dead publicist and author Dennis McNally and documentarian Brian Miksis who also contributed extensive liner notes to the collection bringing historical context for each performance and the carefully researched lineage of each recording. The liner notes, along with track by track essays and listening notes by musicologist & bluegrass historian Neil V. Rosenberg, essays from Sara Ruppenthal Katz (Garcia's first wife) and Stu Goldstein (former owner of The Tangent) and rare photos and memorabilia comprise the 32-page book included with the collection.

Before The Dead will be released in two physical configurations – a limited edition 5-LP boxed set and a 4-CD edition. The 5-LP boxed set is pressed to 180-gram vinyl in a limited edition of 2,500 by Quality Record Pressings from lacquers cut by Ron McMaster at Capitol Records. The recordings contained within Before The Dead were restored and mastered by Fred Kevorkian. Both configurations are now available for pre-order at GarciaFamilyProvisions.com in advance of their May 11th release date.

Not gonna lie.
This is possibly the most exciting release announcement since the last exciting release announcement.

Wow, pretty amazing that all those recordings are still in existence!

But, I don't think our fans do happily lap it up, I think they go online and talk about how it was a bad show.

mistercharlie

Why do people keep giving Dr. Deaf work? That guy is possibly one of the worst 'masterers' there is.

RE the RSD 1969-02-27 release:
David Lemieux tells me that they've taken the 1/2" tape that resulted from the 2005 transfer, restoration, and mixdown of the original reels for the Fillmore West CD release, and had Jeffrey Norman master this vinyl release. Liner notes from Jesse Jarnow.

these look super exciting.

may have to hunt that down to order after lunch..

I had/have about half of these from the old tape days but they were such high generation they were basically unlistenable.  Can't wait to hear what the vault stuff sounds like after a remaster.  Should be great!

The new album by The Decemberists was waiting for me when I got home today! It was signed by the band taboot! I know I paid the extra $2 to get the limited orange vinyl edition, but I don't remember it saying anywhere that it would be autographed.

It's a good album, by the way.

Same here. I had no idea it was going to be autographed, either, so yeah it was a cool surprise .

I have a copy of Hazards of Live that was autographed, which I think was limited to like the first few hundred preorders.

Also waiting for me was the new Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats - also a good album, btw.

You're entitled to your opinion but I'm going to laugh at it.

The new Doc and Merle Sonic Journal (Bear) just came out on vinyl.  $32 shipped on Amazon Prime.  If it sounds half as good as the first one (Janice Joplin), it's a must own.  Came out last year on 7CD, but I have been waiting for the 180g vinyl (2LP).  Should be here in a couple of days.  Pumped.  The Janice album sounds amazing!
