Title: 12.02.03 under rated second set?
Post by: AfterMidnight on December 13, 2010, 08:35:34 PM
this was my first phish show i was a senior in high school and i went with some friends that have been seeing phish since 92. there was a TON of hype before the show. my friends walked away very unhappy being that it was my 1st show i also thought "yea very bad show". mostly due to the fact they were disappointed. granted this was nothing like a show from 92 but i think the second set is pretty slick. anyone agree with me that this second set might get over looked?

it's a show that didn't live up to expectations but I thought it was ok.
I wouldn't call it underated because it was a significant show but I listen to it every once in a while.

Most consider that set the best of the run.

FleetCenter, Boston, MA

Set 1: Harry Hood, Cavern, Birds of a Feather, Ya Mar, Horn, Piper, Anything But Me, Water in the Sky, Down with Disease

Set 2: Rock and Roll -> Weekapaug Groove[1] -> Tweezer Reprise[2] > Frankenstein -> Kung -> Frankenstein, All of These Dreams, The Wedge, Boogie On Reggae Woman > Cities > Maze, Waste

Encore: Bug

I like the jams in bold, the Piper has a kind of driving dissonance to its funk that I like.

^^^That makes sense about Kung. Me, I was pumped--caught two Kungs in one year. bvaz and G. Augusto write truth as well. This is the only show of this run I listen to.

i'm a fan of the first set of the first show of this run, but this one is the other good one.
all you have to do is delete all of these dreams, and you're left with a very hot set.

agree with that.
but i also feel they played that song for reason & meaning. (just like every other song played that night)
the lyrics reflect on their career.

QuoteThere is a place on the mountain near by
Deep in a cave but its up rather high
There in the darkness I safely concealed
All of the dreams that you never revealed

And if you go there, and after you do
All of these dreams would be yours to persue
The rest of your lifetime, devoid of a care
If you keep your eyes open, you may find yourself there

Such is the promise, such is the curse
You could just live your life better or worse
Knowing the cache of dreams up on that hill
Beckons and sways but won't bend to your will

You might find a river under a mountain that
feeds a remote, subteranian fountain
drink from this taste just a hint of a dream
that some how leads in to the underground stream

And if you go there, and after you do
All of these dreams would be yours to persue
The rest of your lifetime, devoid of a care
If you keep your eyes open, you may find yourself there

If you keep your heart open

..or at least that's how i took it.

This was a really fun show and I do think it is underrated....Albany had the potential until they dug up Holdsworth from whatever rock he was under...This show had a festive atmosphere and Jared's video during set break was rad....I had a sky box with BurmesePython and LostMyShit and about 20 other people, it was dope.....People never talk about the Maze, but there is a great part where it is just Page and Trey playing off each other....Later that week my wife and I saw Trey walking down the street in Manhattan next to Sony Studios where I was working and I said "That Frankenstein Kung Frankenstein was NASTY!" and he just sorta laughed....

I'd like to confirm that this Piper is the business.

Shit gets thick at the nine minute mark.

Thanks for making me check it out, never listened to this first set before.

I'm definitely on board with this... Holdsworth was cool for about 37 seconds (and really, only because my buddy called it on the drive in)... then realization kicked in that they flow of the set was probably shot... But If you go listen to the first set of albany, the stash is definitely worth a listen and the Wolfman's > GTBT is

I think it might have the best music played during that 4 show run (aka stash, guyute, wolfmans > GTBT, Tweez>2001>YEM)... but as a whole I think Boston takes it

...although the Twist>Simple from Philly is pretty rawking
