Title: Jerry Garcia Band
Post by: WhatstheUse? on March 19, 2010, 10:42:19 AM
JGB is something I know virtually nothing about and have listened to very little of.

Any advice on where to start/highlight shows/where to find them?

I'm a fan of JGB live at Shoreline DVD.  As for other shows, I can't really contribute to which are better than others.

To add, I had a few friends in HS that had seen quite a few  :syf: shows at the time and they were adamant that in the 90's, JGB would outdo the Dead on any given day in their opinion.  Not sure if that was the general consensus, just relaying the thoughts from some serious Deadheads.

QuoteLegion of Mary was an American rock band, formed by Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead and his friend and musical collaborator Merl Saunders.[1][2][3] The band lasted from July 12, 1974 to July 5, 1975. Its members included Garcia (guitar and vocals), Saunders (keyboards), John Kahn (bass guitar), Martin Fierro (saxophone and flute) and Paul Humphrey (drums). Ron Tutt replaced Humphrey as the band's drummer in February 1975.[4]

In their concerts, Legion of Mary played rock music that had an eclectic mix of influences, including blues, funk, reggae, rock and roll, and especially jazz.[5] Performances included extended improvisation solos, which Garcia made famous with his role in the Grateful Dead. Their only official recording was released on Rhino Records in August 2005, under the name The Jerry Garcia Collection, Vol 1: Legion of Mary; it is a two-disc set of live material.[6]

I was watching this the other night. Absolutely wonderful. And this (http://dkpresents.files.wordpress.com/2008/10/51z9stcca9l_sl500_aa240_.jpg) is great too.

Also, grab some music from over here:

It's a good mix of Garcia with the Dead, Legion of Mary, JGB, and with Grisman. 8 discs of goodness.

Agreed.

But Pie's Legion of Mary is a great place to check out as well.

Another place to start is the Pure Jerry series, as it has a great mix of all the different eras of Jerry:  JGB, Legion of Mary, Jerry and Merl Saunders, the bluegrass sets (Old and in the Way stuff), the run on Broadway.

Man I love me some Jerry Garcia.  Can't remember what thread it was in, but RJ once posted something to the effect that people went to see the Dead to here great GD music, but went to see JGB to really here Jerry shine (paraphrased from RJ's post, he said it much better than that).

Honestly, the whole tape was highlights. Merle apparently hand picked the songs. The quality was A++, right off the masters.
He also kicked down a SBD GD tape that was  a mix of two shows that were unreleased at the time.

I'm not exactly sure why, and I was not there.  But from listening to the tapes I think that he just sounded a lot better with JGB than the GD in the 90s.  Maybe he was just more comfortable in that outfit... maybe it was the droogz, I don't know.  I just think he played a lot better with them IMO

I get the sense Jerry was bemused at best when it came to playing with Dead in the 90's. It was such a huge monster by then. I mean, they could sell out most venues just with tour-heads, never mind locals. I think he felt obligated to keep playing Dead shows... and playing for the obligation of it can't be healthy. I mean, I only saw the Dead once (Deer Creek 94), but I got the sense that the music was really secondary to the "circus" for most folks there.

I think he played JGB shows from a healthier head-space. It was still music for music's sake with JGB. He got to strip away all the excess of Dead tours and just play.

Anywhere from theaters to small arenas. The Dead were playing RFK and Soldier's Field.

I'm not an authority on the subject but here goes:

Reasons why JGB was better than GD 88-95:

1) Quite simply, Jerry was tired of playing GD tunes. Think about it. Plus he could hardly muster up the energy to write new ones due to heroin lethargy, so why not play your favorite covers in your own band. He cared more.

2) Often the venues he played were not concrete shells that destroyed sound and instead were wonderful theaters. Often he could sleep in his own bed after the shows. A lot of Bay area shows (backyard shows).

3) The people who went to Jerry shows were the hardcore family heads. The local yocals and others showing up just for the GD droog scene were not there. It made for a much cooler scene.

4) His heroin buddy and best friend, John Kahn, was his bass player. No one was going to tell him what droogs he could or could not do.

5) The song structures were more conducive to playing on heroin.

Now Will states that 1995 JGB is awesome. I'm not feeling this. Some say the vocals from this year drip with emotion, which they do at times, but the playing is often "trainwrecky" as the heroin/health was now really taking its toll. As for Legion of Mary. I hate Martin Fiero (RIP). I hate flute and I hate saxophone in my rock and roll. While I like sax in my jazz Fiero played some pretty cheesy sax. But do not overlook Jerry and Merls stuff. There are some serious intergalactic voyages. I will put together a list when I get home as, at the moment, I can not name dates off the top of my head.

Legion of Mary (Garcia Saunders) until 1975

Keith and Donna Godchaux Band [inclu. Jerry, Billy K.] and JGB [Nicky Hopkins (piano), Ron Tutt (drums), John Kahn, Jerry] begin in 1975

1976 - both bands merge to form the JGB [without Billy K.]. They will play 1976-1978.

1979 - Reconstruction, the name for this JGB incarnation, is formed and sees a return of Merl behind the keyboards and the departure of Donna and Keith. [Jerry G., Birch (drums), Kahn, couple dudes on horns, Merl]

1979 - Back to being called the JGB iand a four piece [Jerry, Kahn, Ozzie Allers(keys), Foncesca (drums)]

1981 - Melvin Seals replaces Merl on keyboard and so begins the band that I like.

KAHN, SEALS THERE TILL THE END.......(yes there is an acoustic band that starts in 1987 but I don't remember all their names)

also Garcia and Grisman collaborations begin in 1991 (i believe this is the year)

My favorite era of the JGB is 1988 to 1992. Jerry sounds great (vocals), and his playing is "on". I love B3 organ and this era is heavy with Seals. This period was all about creating great grooves combined with emotive ballads. Wonderful pillows of bass upon which Jerry's guitar would burbble lines. Unbelievable. For sick jams check out nearly any version of "Don't Let Go" from these years. Also, because a lot of the venues were acoustic wonderlands, there are some fantastic auds pulled from this period.

here are some shows I remember liking:

2-6-88 Warfield
3-4-88 Warfield
3-5-88 Warfield
7-10-88 Greek

Warfield Shows winter 1990 in fact any Warfield show from 88-92 you generally can't miss.

As for Legion of Mary. I hate Martin Fiero (RIP). I hate flute and I hate saxophone in my rock and roll. While I like sax in my jazz Fiero played some pretty cheesy sax.

Cheesy, perhaps. But I have always loved the sax in LoM, since the day I first heard it. It always sounded like Dr. Teeth and Electric Mayhem to me... just perfect little laid-back groove that I can listen to for days and never tire of. It just sounds so effortless and care-free (or, you may say, "Footloose and fancy free."

I wouldnt necesarily consider Legion even a rock and roll band. Yes tracks like Mystery Train or After Midnight are rock and roll songs, but Finders Keepers, Funny Valentine, La La (one of my faves), Wondering Why, these are all soul-jazz tunes. Thus perfect vehicles for Fiero's sax/flute playing.

Let me re-phrase that then. I hate flute, no matter the context. Period. Second, to my ears, Fiero played cheesy lines. That being said, maybe I hate what you have labeled as soul/jazz. It's cheesy. To me Fiero (and other wind/brass instruments [I can't stand the Clarence Clemons shows in the 89-90's]) simply took away from time that could of been spent listening to Jerry. I do understand how some get off on it but it fails to catch me.

Here WTU. JGB sickness Halloween '92. Stellar FOB recording from the GEMS crew. It's got all the staples but a Don't Let Go and Think would of put it over the top:

Latter day Jerry Garcia Band played at the Warfield Theatre all the time, it seemed like, but they would play larger places on the road, which didn't happen often enough.  The bay area definitely got spoiled.  The midwest didn't get too much.  http://thejerrysite.com (http://thejerrysite.com) is a good resource if you want to look back at tours or whatever.  I caught the JGB at the following:
Poplar Creek 89
Alpine Valley 89
Rosemont Horizon 91
Target Center 91
Seattle Memorial Stadium 93
Portland Meadows 93

Not all the most intimate of venues.  The place in Seattle by the Space Needle was probably the smallest.  One word I remember around at the time was "consistency" as in a Jerry show would just be more consistent - free of ups and downs and various drags, and maintaining a vibe of positive mellow awesomeness.  That was the myth anyway.  But also pretty much how I remember it.  The crowd was more focused (or less distracted) as a whole at JGB than at GD shows I saw in the 90s, too.  I know I dug every minute of those shows, and they rank high on my personal specialness scale.

Was not a myth. You memory is spot on. Every show was solid and it was the coolest of positive vibes. I caught JGB from 90-95 and every show had that vibe. I generally caught small venue indoor shows though. And the winter tours had people heading inside or to hotels pretty quickly after the shows. That might of helped keep the wook factor down.

WTU seek out FOBs for the full JGB experience. I have always felt the boards are way too thin to fully get the bass heavy groove they used to lay down. You need the Kahn and Seals low end to be represented. Presently listening to jgb1991-11-17.fob-schoeps.green_mtn_bros.flac16. Amazing.....November '91 was a sick JGB tour.

Attending JGB was akin to a gospel mass on Sunday.

agree with the LOM recommendation. From that era, the official release Garcia and Saunders at the Keystone is a good one.
I've been a fan of 2/29/8, maybe cause it was a hometown show for me.
4/10/82 is Jerry solo acoustic, worth having. Also get some Jerry + Grisman and Old and In the Way.

re JGB vs GD in the latter years, Jerry went on record in an interview in RS that he was tired of GD tunes. Some of the JGB songs stuck around for a while, but I think Jerry was pretty tired of the GD scene.

Lotta good stuff in this thread.

That Warner Theater '78 show above was the gospel to us back in the day. Still a crucial element in learning Jerry.

One of my favorite JGB shows (attended) was Hampton '93 (1993-11-19 I think) seriously powerful shit.

Jerry had full control of JGB as far as he wanted. It was his thing from beginning to end, top to bottom.
He dug playing those shows and you could tell.

Third or Fourth'ed the 78 D.C. show pushed above. Really good stuff. Actually, that whole tour is really good also, but Keith is a mess for 98% of it. Quality of aud tapes from 78 are up and down.

Other tours to check out are:
Early 1980 tour (as show above - After Midnight)
6/16/82 Music Mountain, South Fallsburg, PA  :rawk:
Late 1983 (11/25/83 is a good representation, and there is a Miller Matrix Sick Bits thingy floating around)
The Halloween New York run from 1987. I think the Eel's River recordings are from this year too which are also good, but I don't have the dates off hand.
St Carl mentioned that September 89 run above, and I would second that. There are good SBD and great auds circulating of that tour.

I like the 90's shows of JGB I've heard, but not as much as the 80's and late 70's (specifically 78). Nicky Hopkins was QUALITY though in prior incarnations pre-1978.

Dubbed this one off a cassette back in the 90's from an FM broadcast tape that someone had.

I call the Harder They Come, Mission, Simple Twist, Midnight Moonlight segment (which filled the available half side of a 90 min blank I had at the time) my go to segment for obliterating sadness.

To this day, I can't listen to that segment and be depressed.

Music Plays Vital Role in Greenpeace Activism

The next year (1977), when one of our ships, the James Bay, was docked in San Francisco and had no means to get back out on the high seas to continue chasing the whaling fleets, a group of Greenpeacers went to see Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead, who was playing with the Jerry Garcia Band in Berkeley.

When the Greenpeacers laid out their dilemma to Jerry--they needed $10,000 to fuel up the ship and buy provisions--he was immediately open to the idea of doing a benefit concert. Five days later, on August 12th, 1977, the Jerry Garcia Band stood right there on San Francisco's Pier 31, in front of the James Bay, and played to a sold-out crowd. The concert raised $20,000, and the James Bay sailed out of port on August 19, headed back out to help save the whales.

Meanwhile, need more instant reconstruction gratification?  Listenable betty board and one of the tighter examples of Reconstruction you will hear.  I'm spinning this now and this Long Train Running (Doobie Bros cover - instrumental) is what this band is all about.  Even if you are one of those people who says reconstruction is not your bag, do not let yourself miss out on this imo best ver of Merl and Jerry covering Bill Withers' Don't It Make It Better?

There was a '1979 project' on bt.etree a couple years ago...  I looked at the db and I was surprised that there were more than a couple of new Reconstruction sources since then, and aside from new sources of circulating shows there have been a couple of entirely new shows to circulation- so this vine has, at least, 4/17/79 aud, 5/30/79 sbd, & 6/13/79 aud which were not included in that 79 project.  So if you got that then, FYI.

That 03-18-78 is so good.  Another one that I have been listening to since the tape trading days.

The new Garcia Live Volume 7 looks really good too.  76-80 is the sweet spot for me, though I love some 91 as well.

QuoteVolume Seven showcases the Jerry Garcia Band's November 8th, 1976 performance at Sophie's in Palo Alto, California. Recorded by Betty Cantor-Jackson, the original master reels were only recently re-discovered, along with a few other reels dubbed the "Houseboat Tapes", and have been remastered for this release. It was the year of this recording that Donna Jean and Keith Godchaux first joined up with the Jerry Garcia Band. Their addition, along with Ron Tutt on drums and bassist John Kahn, helped form what would be one of the most durable lineups of the Garcia Band. In fact, earlier that year Garcia commented "I haven't been as happy with any little performing group since Old And In The Way in terms of feeling 'this is really harmonious, this is what I want to hear.'"

That harmonious vibe is especially present as well. Throughout the course of the evening, the band deftly melds gospel, rock, soul, and reggae to form their quintessential mid-70's sound. As one astute critic pointed out, "More than any other Garcia band this one allows him room to run through all his guitar styles, often within a single song." From the opening notes of "The Way You Do The Things You Do", the band lock into a relaxed, but confident groove with Kahn & Tutt's deep pocket providing the foundation for Jerry & Keith's melodic exploration rounded out by Donna Jean's soulful harmonies. The Hunter/Garcia penned "Mission in the Rain" and Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" are particularly poignant and soulful while songs like "Midnight Moonlight", "Tore Up Over You" and "Ride Mighty High" provide the sparks bringing balance to the evening. A 22+ minute "Don't Let Go" stands out not only for its length, but for its exercise in dynamics which further showcases Garcia's comfort not only with the band, but the freedom found in playing smaller rooms tailor-made for they type of music he was looking to create.

Music Mountain 6/1982 seems to strike a chord with me.....

There's also an insane show from 1979 with an INTENSE After Midnight.....Jerr just kept hitting peak after peak after peak.....I do believe it also had a sick Elenor Rigby jam stuffd inside of it....yeah...12/21/79....

And then there's the last JGB show I ever saw....http://db.etree.org/shn/97271 .....nothing really "smoking" per say, but a SOLID show. Worth a listen.....

GarciaLive 10! 5/20/90 from Hawaii

https://youtu.be/zvAA4MlOv9g

We are pleased to announce the tenth installment of GarciaLive due for release on February 23rd and available for pre-order at Garcia Family Provisions! GarciaLive Volume Ten documents the Jerry Garcia Band's May 20th, 1990 performance at the Hilo Civic Auditorium in Hawaii. On the heels of a diabetic coma in 1986, Bill Kreutzmann encouraged Jerry to find peace and healing in the pristine blue waters of the Big Island's reef system. What was initially a hobby became a passion for Garcia as he later publicly advocated for the protection of Hawaii's natural areas and directed earnings from this show, held in the modest Hilo Civic Center, to The Ocean Recreation Council of Hawaii.

In this relaxed setting complete with leis on stage, it's no wonder that the music from this show shines so brightly – both in Garcia's strong vocals and guitar playing but also the joie de vivre setlist spanning some of Jerry's favorite corners of popular music – Dylan, Motown, Reggae, and Rock & Roll. Spurred on by the ever steady rhythm section of Dave Kemper and John Kahn, the Garcia band this night seemed to pull out all the stops complete with the celestial sounds of Melvin Seals' organ and the background vocals of Gloria Jones and Jacklyn LaBranch.

The sum of these parts that defined the 1990s Garcia Band sound would make for a magical Sunday night that first kicked off with the Holland-Dozier-Holland favorite "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)" followed by an idyllic "They Love Each Other."  Sprinkled in throughout the night are five Dylan covers including powerfully delivered vocals on versions of "Knockin' On Heaven's Door," "Forever Young," and a positively soaring "Tangled Up In Blue" as the encore. Along the way, covers like "Stop That Train," "Waiting For A Miracle," and "Evangeline" ably accent originals like "Deal" and "Run For The Roses."

GarciaLive Volume Ten: May 20th, 1990 Hilo Civic Auditorium is now available for pre-order at Garcia Family Provisions in advance of it's February 23rd release date. The 2-CD set or digital downloads are available on their own or bundled with an exclusive t-shirt and/or a limited edition screen print by Nathaniel Deas signed and numbered by the artist in an edition of 500.

Tracklist:

1.) How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)
2.) They Love Each Other
3.) Tough Mama
4.) Like A Road Leading Home
5.) Run For The Roses
6.) The Way You Do The Things You Do
7.) My Sisters And Brothers
8.) Knockin' On Heaven's Door
9.) Deal

Disc Two:

1.) The Harder They Come
2.) Forever Young
3.) Stop That Train
4.) Tore Up Over You
5.) Tears Of Rage

QuoteGarciaLive Volume 13 puts a spotlight on the Jerry Garcia Band's legendary September '89 run highlighting the September 16th show at Poplar Creek Music Theatre located in the suburbs of Chicago. Alongside the Jerry Garcia Band – John Kahn, David Kemper, Melvin Seals, Gloria Jones, and Jacklyn LaBranch – there is one BIG addition on saxophone... the Big Man, Clarence Clemons (Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band). While the setlist is fairly standard for the era, Clemons helps the band find new heights on old staples like The Band's "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down," The Beatles' "Dear Prudence" and a pair of Garcia/Hunter originals, "Cats Under The Stars" and "They Love Each Other." One relative rarity of note is a positively blistering take on The Rolling Stones' romp "Let's Spend The Night Together," dusted off earlier in the year after having been absent since '76, which closes set one spectacularly. Top to bottom, this one is filled with magic.

Disc One // Set One
1. Cats Under the Stars
2. They Love Each Other
3. Let It Rock
4. I Shall Be Released
5. Someday Baby
6. Dear Prudence
7. Let's Spend The Night Together

Disc Two // Set Two
1. How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)
2. Knockin' on Heaven's Door
3. Think
4. Waiting for a Miracle
5. Evangeline
6. The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down
7. Tangled Up in Blue
