-All timings are approximate

*For the Other One Intro (aka the thumping bass crescendo followed by a catrostrophic (at its best!) bomb which intros most, but not all versions of The Other One) I overlayed several versions of this moment in order to give this some major oomph... One of two exceptions being the 1985-06-30 (MPP, Columbia, MD) clip which is actually from the Space which preceeded The Other One. The clip contains an simulated bomb and explosion generated via midi. See below for the other exception.

** This is the entire 1974-02-23 The Other One (approx 29minutes) 'folded' much in the style of John Oswald who created the "GreyFolded" album. Essentially, I took the entire 29 minute track, cut it in half, reversed the second half and overlayed it onto the first. Then I repeated the process until the track was reduced to the 1 second version currently in this mix.

Venue information is not repeated so as to keep things relatively tidy.
All sources are lossless and from archive.org/audio and are in compliance with the taping/trading policy of the band. This recording is not for sale.

This one will mess with your head. "mixed for the hallucinations" as they say.

Any Other One in that mix is quality, as well.

And yeah, I'm a tad immodest.

sweet.  Thanks for upping it.
Can we talk about the Dead?  I'd love to talk about the fucking Grateful Dead, for once, can we please discuss the Grateful FUCKING Dead!?!?!?!

I've been coming to where I am from the get go
Find that I can groove with the beat when I let go
So put your worries on hold
Get up and groove with the rhythm in your soul

for starters i'm partial to all vers. from 72.

9-23, 8-22 are good places to start.
yea
the versions that come to mind are 5/26/72 and 12/31/72
don't think there is one from "pre hiatus" that isn't great
yea, its real tough to pick one...or another...one.
the ones i mentioned, and vers. like 5-26 also come to mind for me ususally b/c there is some epic moment/-meltdown within an already kickass version. though the europe 72 vers. are still breaking out of the 'mold'. whereas the fall vers. start going freeform and yet still hold onto the 'drive' that is so compeling from everything that leads up to that era.

also notable along with teh 72s, are vers. from 70...2-13?, but for more fun check out the early keith vers from late 71. seriously crazy sh-- once the keys are infused.

very choice esp. 31Dec.72

I like 6Aug.71 as well.  The HYH version is cool, esp. the laid back jazz/clementine esque jam 18:45 in.

My under the radar, all-time best version is 10May1972, arguably the best version the  :syf: ever played!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i'll have to pull 5-10 out. i get all the europe versions mashed up in my head. though i was thinking about the previous show from bickershaw might have it as well...

anyway, i dislike any 'best of' lists in general, but for discussion's sake this thread would be amiss without mention of 6-18-74, a stock answer with which i completely concur.

also, for kicks, here's the top ten from deadbase IX's survey. of course the frame of reference was limited by what circulated back then.

1 .2-13-70
2. 5-2-70
3. 12-31-72
4. 3-1-69
5. 6-18-74
6. 10-27-79
7. 9-28-72
8. 8-19-89
9.12-31-90
10. 2-24-92

the top 7 listed are locks in my book.
also not discussed here yet the ver. from the 10-27-79 show is worth highlighting. along with 8-22-72 (a definite top ten somehow completely omitted from the survey; i'm assuming from lack of circulation) it contains one of the most cataclysmic climaxes in dead history with some fantastic mind numbing effects thrown in by the emerging Brent mydland.

sls.stormyrider

was gonna mention 6-18-74 but you beat me to it.
I'll mention it anyway
"toss away stuff you don't need in the end
but keep what's important, and know who's your friend"
"It's a 106 miles to Chicago. We got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses."

Gumbo72203

I'm not saying its the best, but I've always been VERY partial to the 5/12/81 version because of Brent's organ scream after Phil drops the intro.

another amazing version, the jam between verses exceeds 4 min, a plus for that era.  Jerry is simply brimming w/ ideas.  I'm listening to the Fillmore West Box cut, sickness!!!
