As a Bruins fan, I can agree that the reffing sucked last night. Regardless, you're not going to get those calls at that point in the game. And a Toronto fan whining about the reffing last night is pretty hilarious. The Leafs were the beneficiaries of some terrible calls that led to some key goals throughout the series. He is stick checking him. And then Lupul hits himself in the head with his own stick and falls like he was just shot. That is an unsportsmanlike on Lupul (or a simple no call), not a high stick on Chara.
You can't complain about non calls in playoff hockey, as there are hundreds during each game. Bad calls on the other hand deserve plenty of scrutiny.

Either way, though, the real winners were the fans. That was a great series. As a lifelong basketball fan (Celtics season ticket holder for the last 5 years) who became a serious hockey fan in the last decade, I can say that I much preferred the product the NHL put out in their playoffs over that of the NBA. And it was not even close.

Sadly, no drinking right now. I'm smashing a crazy bulk up work out routine. My separated shoulder was finally pronounced fully healed at the end of last year. A couple numbers at present: flat benching 200lbs, incline dumbbell press 85lbs in each hand. Loving going to the gym and lifting again.
hawks blues series way closer than i expected. these 2 teams are so evenly matched it's like a cup final, not a 1st round series. i'd say the team that has played better in each game has lost. the nhl definitely got what they wanted with the retooled playoff format.

I've always supported the let them play attitude, helps with the game flow, but some of those seemed too blatant to not call.
I hope they stay consistent with their officiating for the rest of the series/playoffs because it keeps the players guessing all the time.

Here in Montreal we erect effigies of our garbage throwers. And once a year we celebrate their debaucherous behavior by throwing a street party (in most cities they term this event a riot). The date of the party fluctuates, but essentially erupts once the humidity has been sustained for a period of at least a week, or if we have been exited from the playoffs, or even if we've won. Let's just say we enjoy a good riot.

However, people seem to root for given teams for the strangest reasons. A lot of people have told me "I'm glad <so and so> won the cup. Since they knocked us out of the playoffs, it feels better that they were the team that won the cup and we didn't lose to just anybody." or "I root for whatever team is in the East because it makes our conference look better."
Never made any sense to me, but whatever.

Toronto/Montreal was my Dad's rivalry. The Leafs haven't played the Habs in the playoffs since 93. The Leafs main rivals are the Sens.

That's Delay of Game. If your team is stupid enough to violate the rules to start overtime they should get a penalty.
The Leafs were a bad team and that was a nightmare to watch, but a correctly called Power Play there could have turned the tide or stopped the bleeding, at the minimum it slows Boston's momentum.
Between the Leafs coming that close and losing last year and the Olympic tournament being so good this year, I've just had enough hockey and can't enjoy NHL the same way.
I agree it was delay of game and should have been called.
That said, the game should have been over by that time. That was the biggest game 7 choke in the history of the game.
It was only round 1, so the Leafs weren't that close.
Also it was far from the worst call (or non call) in crucial playoff games that I've personally seen - in hockey or other sports, not to mention the games I haven't seen. (I'm a Ranger fan so I was rooting for Toronto to win that one)
YMMV but imo Olympic and playoff hockey are the best sporting events on earth

I realize that TD Garden is the home of the Bruins and Bruins fans love their hockey, but would I be wrong to say people like myself help the U.S. economy and should be thanked, and not disrespected? I wasn't expecting to get high fives for wearing a Montreal jersey, but I really didn't expect for my girlfriend to be disrespected that way. My girlfriend was a very sick woman for a year and all she did was watch hockey, that was the one thing that helped her. I live paycheque to paycheque and was saving for this, and to be honest had to be the worst three hours of my life. I regret every moment and every penny I spent over the weekend. Would I be wrong to say that better security is needed and people who do such thing thrown out of the building to set an example?
I want Canadians to know what to expect when they go to TD Garden.

Not sure what you have against Boston fans, but it's not any better in most cities. There were plenty of Habs fans in my section the other night who were heckled a bit, but nothing beyond what you'd expect anywhere else wearing the opposing team's paraphernalia during a playoff game. No worse than when I wear my teams' paraphernalia at an away game. Sure, there are always bad apples everywhere that lead to stories like this, but that is no more common in Boston than it is in, say, Toronto.

That kind of stuff is inexcusable, but we've all seen clips on ESPN from other NHL cities were similar shit happens.
I have been at several Sox - Jays games (for some reason, that is the team I most often have seen at Fenway) with guys and girls dressed in Jays shirts, cheering, etc, and no one bothers them.
I've cheered for the Rangers more than once at the Garden, and no one ever bothered me, although it wasn't the playoffs. I've been to games in NY, LI, Boston, Pittsburgh, and Cleveland (anyone remember them?) and have seen fights everywhere. Well, maybe not Cleveland, because there was no on at the game.
I wouldn't think of wearing a visiting jersey to any NHL arena.
I hate to say it, but hockey crowds can be a bit more - um, emotional.

I am very defensive when it comes to this shit. I think generalizations about populaces suck, and Boston has a rap as being home to bad sports fans and racists. There are certainly some of both here, but that can be said about any place, and I don't think Boston is any worse (or better) than any other city. People from outside of the area seem to think that it's worse here than where they are. That is just not a fact.

The same thing could happen to you in Mtl in the wrong section at the wrong time. I think it's hardcore sports fans in general that deserve the bad rap for this type of behaviour. The only thing I will say is I can't imagine this happening at the ACC as half the people in there don't even care about the game (at least that's been my experience but I haven't been to a Leaf's game since 2004).

Tough to say, as that stuff happens so fast in real time. But yes, he probably could have had he not been skating directly towards him. the fact that the Rangers got caught twice is proof that they aren't very good at it. The Canadiens have elevated it to an art from.

As for the Canadiens, no sweat here. As I'm sure I've mentioned before, I am not a Habs fan in the least but I will always cheer for the Canadian team in the playoffs as there are usually only a couple in there (yes, I know there are Canadian players on every NHL team).

there was a thing about it on nhl.com. Lunquist said that the ref told him that the contact was after the puck was in the net, which clearly was not the case. Lundquist said he wasn't necessarily looking for a penalty, but King was clearly in the crease making contact before the shot.
The refs are very inconsistent with how that is called.

I started watching the Rangers in 68. In 94, I had a meeting in Cali and decided that my wife and I would take a week of vaca before the meeting started. Turns out, this was during the finals. The day we arrived was Game 4.
Everything that we did was scheduled around the games. I was a fucking basket case the entire week, and my wife was getting a little pissed.
I woke up the morning after the Rangers lost game 6 (they were up 3 games -1, lost games 5 and 6) and realized that if I had a bad day at work, Mark Messier didn't really care, and I needed to adjust my attitude for my mental health. When the Rangers won game 7, I was out of my mind, but decided to calm down about sports and didi a pretty good job of it - until now.
I'm nowhere near as crazy now as I won in 94 -( partly because I saw them win and partrly because that year it was expected and this was not). Still, I'm a nervous wreck during the games and I'm all wound up for about an hour or so after they're don.
After all, it is the Stanely Cup

Brad Richards lol. Demoted to the fourth line where he belongs. Honestly, he does not even belong there. He is terrible. Slow as shit. Gets dominated. and looks lost all of the fucking time. Pull him and give Nash the minutes he deserves.

He does not need to be surrounded by a guy like Stepan. or other top talent. I say take him away from that, to get him on against weaker defense men. Look at what he did in Columbus and who was he playing with? that's right virtually nobody. He has all the talent. I think he is afraid of getting hurt again. But when he decides to push to the net he is as effective as anybody else. I say move St louis up to his spot, and put Nash with Hags and Moore. Maybe even slot him into Puliots spot. With Zuccs ability to create space may open up Nash more.

Either way, no matter what happens, this year has been unreal, and I can not wait for next season. We are a young fast team with one of the best goalies in the league. I hope we can keep a lot of the UFAs and RFAs this off season.

I initially thought McDonough's shot was in. I thought when they reviewed it at the whistle they would call it a goal. On review, it clearly wasn't in, but in real - time, it was tough.
The Rangers have a lot of free agents. If they can keep the core intact and pick up one or 2 good players, they certainly will be contenders for a while.

The subtitle of Michael Lewis' legendary Moneyball is "The Art of Winning an Unfair Game." The unfairness, of course, being the disparity between obscenely wealthy clubs like Yankees and Red Sox and slightly less wealthy ones like the Oakland Athletics.
f you wrote a book about the burgeoning hockey analytics movement, you might give it the same subtitle, but for different reasons. Not only is hockey a cruel, often brutal game, but at times it doesn't make any sense, at least from a basic statistical standpoint: A team could get more shots on goal than another, build an almost comical advantage, and still lose. At heart, hockey is still 12 brave souls skating at top speeds inside a closed venue, so the game is often just random and, well, unfair.
Analytics, advanced stats, fancy stats — whatever you want to call them — have slowly-but-surely started to fight their way into hockey, through means both sensational ("traditional" TV analysts callously smacking down those that differ from their thinking) and subliminal: almost every NHL franchise uses some form of analytics, and more and more teams are bringing in stat-practitioners to staff entire analytics departments. Hockey's most recent offseason was half-seriously referred to as the "summer of analytics," after teams like New Jersey and Toronto made waves by hiring everyone from up-and-coming junior execs to poker pros.
The Devils and Maple Leafs are important, because they're two teams currently at opposite ends of the advanced-stats spectrum. Last season, New Jersey was one of the top teams in CF percentage ("Corsi For," which counts total shots – whether they reach the net or not) and Fenwick (which tallies shot attempts minus blocked shots). The former is a good indicator of puck possession – the higher the number, the better – and the latter measures stress on a goaltender, and given that the Devils were near the top of the league in both, most were mystified that they missed the playoffs once again.
On the surface, you could blame it on their decision to start legendary, but past-his-prime goaltender Martin Brodeur over the now-superior Cory Schneider. But a deeper look suggests it went beyond that.
"The biggest problem for the Devils over the past few seasons has been their offensive system," Jen Lute Costella, an attorney-turned-analytics-writer for Yahoo Sports' Puck Daddy, says. "Not only did the Devils' systems lead to their opponent's shots being suppressed, but their own as well."
Even if their CF percentage or Fenwick was high, they weren't getting enough shot attempts, forcing them to play on the razor's edge: each game could be lost by a bounce of the puck or sporadically bad goaltending, which Brodeur (who despite his reputation, remains unsigned and a free agent at 42) was often more than capable of supplying.
So what did the Devils do? They gambled – literally. In June, New Jersey hired poker pro Sunny Mehta to head up their analytics department, a move that highlighted what a lot of experts want to see from this movement.
"To me, the whole point of the analytics movement in hockey is to play a higher quality of hockey," Costella says. "As teams get more advanced and savvy in the way they analyze the performance of the team, they can use their players in ways that they may not have thought to do in the past."
And Mehta has already begun to address the Devils' deficiencies. They're currently second in their division, and not only are they consistently starting Schneider, "they have increased the rate at which they are getting shots off a little bit," Costella says, "which they will have to continue if the team has plans on seeing the postseason again."
While New Jersey has been quietly going about their business, Toronto has become a battleground for hockey's "old school vs. new school" mentality.
The Leafs, despite a playoff appearance in 2013, are a team that "ranks in the bottom five in puck possession, so this is still a team that will get outplayed, outshot, and outchanced most nights," according to Rob Vollman, author of the essential Hockey Abstract. The previous solution was to keep the team — led by a coach in Randy Carlyle who approves of "tough guys" and "hitting" — loaded with bruising fourth-liners like Colton Orr.
One of the bugaboos of the fancy stats crowd also happens to be one of hockey's most entertaining acts: the body check. While yes, it is exciting, the fact is, players who get a lot of hits don't typically have the puck very often, since their main purpose is more or less to punish their opponent. Yet Toronto remained a proudly physical team – and defiantly anti-analytics.
"Putting out linebackers on skates may make you 'truculent' and 'tough to play against,'" Timo Seppa, owner and editor of the annual Hockey Prospectus, says. "But it won't do much to help you win games."
"Toronto's whole anti-analytics stance was laughable, but it was only a portion of the problem with the team over the last few seasons," Travis Yost, who Canada's TSN hired as part of their new analytics department, adds. "Reality is, the team wasn't just getting submarined by an old-timey head coach and a front office that rebuked any consideration of statistical analysis. In years past, there was a glaring depth issue in the forward ranks, and defensively, their top-pairing was getting caved-in far too often."
The response – led by the new regime of president and Hockey Hall of Famer Brendan Shanahan – was to finally give the smart guys a seat at the table, with the headlines going to Kyle Dubas, a 28-year-old GM of a Canadian junior team who is a massive proponent of metrics. Seppa described him as "Theo Epstein-esque," and correctly pointed out that this is a strength Toronto, one of the NHL's richest teams, should be able to exploit.
"Toronto may have the same cap space as every other team," he says, "but they should be able to trounce most of the league in analytics investments, should they chose to – and they seem to be. Credit Shanahan for getting the ball rolling there."
That summer, the team signed players like Daniel Winnik, Leo Komarov and Stephane Robidas, not household names, but "together they show the team's willingness to consider alternatives to the team's usual design," Vollman says.
"They've made a considerable jump from woeful teams of the past," Yost adds, "but you can make a big improvement and still be a bad team. That's sort of the issue with Toronto right now. They still have a number of issues to figure out – fixing center depth and getting a player like Jake Gardiner or Morgan Rielly to really develop into a reliable first-pairing guy would be huge in terms of making another step forward."
Toronto's an important market to single out because it's where most of hockey's media comes from. Similar to baseball before its stats revolution, hockey's front offices and television analysts make up an old boys' network that doesn't like being challenged, and the summer of analytics has led to some scoffing from major NHL TV figures. NBC's lead hockey analyst, Pierre McGuire, said that any coach who relied on analytics to evaluate players "should be fired."
However, the only people that should really be interested are front office types. Seppa, warns that "Among those folks working in the game, it would be foolish to not at least get a working knowledge of some of the key concepts. There are many holdouts, even among GMs. For an owner, that should be troubling."
Analytics are here to stay, however, and not merely a fad. They simply make too much business sense. Much like Moneyball, they can help shine a light on players who don't fit into the typical narratives, improve team play and – most important of all – impact the win/loss column.
"Even if hockey analytics give you a 2-5 percent advantage in terms of acquiring talent through the draft/free agency/trade, identifying superior strategy and systems play, optimizing lineup deployment – it's still a competitive advantage," Yost says.
"For teams, it provides that edge, much like they have received from their trainers and equipment managers," Vollman adds. "It's that sober second thought, and the ability to find things that the traditional analysis has missed, that provides the greatest advantage."
Plus, even if analytics are a fad, it's becoming increasingly difficult to ignore the impact they've had on the game:
"The league's two best teams, Chicago and Los Angeles, have been cashing in on that edge," Vollman continues. "And unless they're foolish enough to publish their secrets in a book like the Oakland A's did, the rest of the NHL will need to build teams of their own to catch up."

Brodeur played for the Blues this season after an injury to Brian Elliott spurred the Blues to sign the veteran goalie, who was an unrestricted free agent after sitting out the first few months of the season.
Once Elliott returned earlier this month, however, it dropped Brodeur to a No. 3 role. He left the club two weeks ago to think about his future.
The Blues will hold a news conference Thursday to officially announce the retirement, but team president and general manager Doug Armstrong said Tuesday that Brodeur will stay with the organization in a management role.
The 42-year-old Brodeur, a future first-ballot Hall of Famer, also has an open invitation from New Jersey GM Lou Lamoriello for a front-office position with the Devils, with whom he spent the previous 21 seasons.
Brodeur won 688 of his 691 career victories with New Jersey, and hoisted the Stanley Cup on three occasions, in 1995, 2000 and 2003.
"Marty and I have been talking certainly quite a bit. We stayed close even during the season in St. Louis," Lamoriello told ESPN.com on Tuesday. "Today's announcement ends one of the greatest careers that you can imagine, in so many different ways. Just look at his statistics, they will tell you about his career.
"
He has a position here whenever he wants it. He's been with the Blues this year, he's established a relationship. ... He'll be back here, in my opinion, as long as he wants.

"Marty and I spoke. He has a position here whenever he wants it," said Lamoriello, who also said that he talked with Armstrong. "He's been with the Blues this year, he's established a relationship. They asked him to stay with them and work with them and I certainly understand that.
"He wanted to make sure it wasn't anything that anybody was uncomfortable with here. But it's as close to finishing the year as a player by being part of them the rest of the year. That's Marty. He's going to do that for the rest of the year. He'll be back here, in my opinion, as long as he wants."
Brodeur appeared in seven games for the Blues, going 3-3-0 with a 2.87 goals-against average and .899 save percentage. He also had one shutout to increase his NHL record to 125.
And he never once worried about how others would view his legacy by continuing to play this season.

"A lot of people thought I wasn't going to make the NHL, so I'm living this dream, and when you are living this dream ... you really enjoy what you do. It's hard to let it go sometimes."
The 10-time All-Star finishes with a 691-397-176 record -- 140 more wins than Roy, who is No. 2 all time. Brodeur also captured the Vezina Trophy -- given to the league's top goaltender -- four times.
He also is a two-time Olympic gold medalist with Team Canada in 2002 and 2010.
Brodeur has played 1,266 career games -- also first all time among goaltenders -- and finishes with a .912 save percentage and a 2.24 goals-against average.

hawks game was pretty damn entertaining last night! i heard them play iron maiden's "two minutes to midnight" on the PA just before 12 and i thought it was getting late! little did i know the game would last until about 1:15. the 6am alarm this morning was rough.

Tampa? We played them five times this season and lost EVERY game. We got swept. I do NOT want to see Tampa. Although judging by the scoring summaries, I think Stamkos is hurt, and he was the one killing us.

The Caps were very tough. Holtby was great, team D was tough, Ovi was scary

question - much is made of the 38 TB shots on goal. And yes, TB controlled much of the 2nd, 38 shots is too many, they did have some good chances, and Hank played great.
but, to me, they didn't have nearly the quality chances in those 38 shots as games 2 and 3 - true?

the Rangers weren't quick enough on offense. they seemed to be to damn tentative. They couldn't get any traffic in front of the net. Of course, they had trouble scoring most of the playoffs.
Lundquist was great. It could have been 4 - 0. He was totally screened out on Killorn's goal. Another example of how just putting the puck on net is often the right play - you never know what will happen.
