I'm going through my routine contract stuff with the ISPs that I do every 2 years and was thinking of buying my own modem rather than renting theirs.
Any recommendations?
I have an Apple Extreme - would that suffice on its own?

thanks

Always buy your own cable modem, it'll pay for itself in a year or two depending on how much the cable company is gouging you on rental fees.

Motorola surfboard sb6141 is a good solid cable modem (no built-in Wifi).

I believe the airport extreme is just a wifi router, not a cable modem

call the customer service of your ISP and ask for the most compatible modems with their service.
motorola is usually a good bet.
and yeah, purchasing is definitely a much better option.  you should definitely be able to recover the cost of the modem in saved rental fees long before it is time to replace it.

Honestly though, this whole post whoring thing is getting to be a little ridiculous.  But does having a higher post count make a cooler pauger?
