Tom's Marshall's podcast, announced on our HFPod last week, lauched today with three episodes.
You can listen to it directly on the website: http://www.underthescales.com
I'm midway through the third ep and it's pretty good stuff. I think most everyone here will dig what he's sharing with us.
Listened to 000 first - skipped to 002 for the lulz - it's delivering the lulz!
ep 001 has many lulz too.
Thanks, RJ. I'm on Episode 000 right now.
Listened to the first episode on the way home. This is going to be right up my alley.
It's cool that he calls The HFP "the sister podcast" to his show. Nice work RJ.
Thanks for sharing and congrats on the attention you've been garnering.
This is great.
Awesome ! Can't wait to dig in
Jumped to the Rail Riders episode first for the lulz, which it brought.
Kids LEAVING THE SHOW EARLY at Dick's to get in line for the next night? That's.... mental illness. Also, paying 'task-rabbits' to stand in line for you?! Ridiculous.
Michelle and I got 5th or 6th row for the Halloween set by.... just walking right up there at the end of the first set. Definitely would've gotten tense had we tried to move farther, but no issues to get where we were. I can't imagine waiting in line allllll daaaay to be 5-10 ft. closer. Dude in the interview said 6-7am was the standard time he'd arrive at a venue to get in line!
I always thought I was as phish obsessed as a person could be... but apparently, there's another level. Anybody know this dude personally? I'm sure I'd recognize him...

Couldn't believe when I saw those kids waiting in line at Dicks. I was blown away. And they missed a sick encore too.
I just can't fathom missing Phish to see Phish. Because... ya know... it doesn't make any sense.

Yeah, that's a weird sort of math what leads to such conclusions.
His pics are pretty good, btw.
Awesome, looking forward to checking this out. Thanks for the alert, RJ.
This guy on riding the rail is an independent MJ consultant and follows Phish?
Dude's living the dream!!!
Guess who just liked his FB to reach 420 ...

Nice.
I listened to episodes 2 and 3 the other day. Let me join the others in saying I find the culture of rail-riding to be borderline insane.
I'm up to date on UtS now... and my one comment is that I find Tom's lack of knowledge in the areas he is covering as refreshing as it is surprising. I mean, it seems like in almost every case (granted it's just two areas so far, Rail riding and taping) he is just clueless... yet he is 20 yards from these people like a dozen nights a year for 30 years. I love it!
As for it being refreshing, I think a lot of Phish discussion out there comes from a place assumed knowledge amongst us. Tom seems to come without any of that baggage. It makes for a great listen.
Though, there are times when I'm like "the correct answer is out there and nobody here seems to know it." For example, the issue of soundboard patches. Paul allowed them in the 80's and there was a specific moment - like the beginning of 1990 or something, when an announcement was made to the community that patches would no longer be available.
Anyway. I'm loving it.

I'm having the same reaction. Asking myself, "How is this guy not at least equally as big a Phish geek as all the rest of us?"
Also, RJ, well done on the taping episode.
To some degree, Tom is trying to draw the answers out of his guests but he is also there to learn.
Tom may be one of the fans that's been around the longest but there are definitely folks who seen more shows. His experience as a fan is as distinct as many of ours and few of us know everything about everything.
As for the sbd patch question, I simply didn't see it coming. Hell, I wasn't expecting to meet Tom much less record a podcast that day.
Finally got around to playing this. Dig it.
New ep is up - Paul Glace the founder/owner of PT. Wonder if he asks how much he makes off the ads on that godforsaken site.
QuotePaul Glace, founder of PhantasyTour.com, is featured. We discuss the site's origins and how it grew to the incredible Phish fan destination it is today.
Most shocking revelation to me was that paul and his brother apparently make enough from PT that it is their full time job.
They're basically the nitrous mafia. They make boatloads of cash selling something the people are addicted to like crack while adding no real value to the scene.
That's harsh, I know. There is something unique about PT... and I've been on there for a decade plus... but it seems so half-assed yet apparently it's pretty damned profitable.
3 million views a week for an average of 15 minutes and a dozen pages visited. That's internet gold for advertising. PTers are making this family wealthy.
They have ads?
I thought it was an interesting interview. I had an account on there for the game way back when it was new.
Pretty much like the tabloids of the jam scene (along with live for live music except PT is worse. Maybe like a less valuable reddit of the jam scene. ). I've gotten some last minute hotel reservations really close to spac and MPp a couple times on PT but it's pretty much just fans in their basements bragging stats or some bs. There is potential laugh material in there though for jam related gifs memes etc but we have terry on staff for that here.
I don't think theres any need to dwell too much on how our communities differ. I think it's enough clear to any of us.
Regardless of that and for better or for worse, PT has become a signifcant sector in the online Phish universe. I learned a few things.
I learned long ago it wasn't my avenue for discussion but I still use it to lurk and check rumors/dates. It totally has it's place in the community imo and if you are easily offended, just may not be the place for you.

the concept of PT is fine. it is the people that ruin. it is like many FB groups.
I use it for entertainment. the hate for moe. is strong on the green board. it brings me much amusement.
twiddle mentions can also be entertaining.
there are actually some decent threads on there. there is just too much junk to have to weed through.
Agreed DoW.
The concept is a good idea, and would still be a beneficial place for the community if it wasnt for the people and most of the BS threads they start. If the moderators would clean it up once and a while it would be a lot better.

That place gives me a headache it's so ugly. They should take some of that money and hire someone from the 21st century to redesign it.

interesting to hear trey talk about setlists. i still don't know how he doesn't accidentally end up repeating a song during a 3 or 4 night run.
That was some great guitar talk, lol.
Hope they don't even get to it cause I'd much rather hear Tom and Trey just tell stories.

Yes she was. I couldn't even finish it. Why is it so hard to abruptly end a fucking sentence? Do you have to drift off with your slutty mouth agape every fucking time you say something?
And the guitar thing. I heard about 2 minutes of guitar talk. I'm not complaining, but at this rate it'll be longer than the NYE show!
Am expecting some actual guitar talk in the next part.
As I understand it they didn't actually get to ask many questions. Trey likes to talk.
Quote from: rowjimmy on February 06, 2017, 09:46:21 PM

For real! He rambles on and on from topic to topic.... yet, it's pretty coherent, and he's a good story teller.... and I love him, so I'll let it slide.
The setlist talk was interesting. They really walk on stage w/o any idea what song they're going to open with. Funny how Trey seems to think the song choices become obvious when the time comes.
The comments about new songs and how Elton John almost seemed 'apologetic' for playing them made me think of Dr. Gabel :hereitisyousentimentalbastard

It wasn't a knock; just an observation.
He can ramble all day about song choices and I'd be all ears.
Even stories about their early formative years leave me wanting more.
Mmmhm, I could listen to Trey talk forever. He's so dreamy

great chat with brad sands! really dug that one. brad has such a unique perspective. he remembers dates, venues, and songs like a fan, and has the back stories to go with them!
His snorting was a bit distracting.
And that voice, too...he's done some hard living. Wanted them to get into specifics as to why he wasn't asked back in 09 and how he felt about it. I always thought he was a douche. But he's one lucky fan!

From what I've heard, Brad + CK5 = trouble.
But yeah, not exactly the type of thing he would want to discuss on a podcast.
gonna get to this terrapin soon...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txVZ4pIEr14
He showed the chip on his shoulder about being blamed for much of the downfall without getting too specific. He let "whatever Amy" fly in relation to her blaming him/the clinic in the phish biography.
Looks like there will be a part 2, he might dive into it more.
Yeah, he couldn't have been too surprised when he wasn't asked back for 3.0 plus I'm sure he used the hiatus years to carve out his own niche in the rock world. I just wonder if he misses it?
He said right in the podcast he could tell that he was going to end up shouldering the blame for the way things went in 2.0 and the aftermath.
Can't really blame him if he's still bitter about being cut out of the loop by guys he considered his close friends.
That was 9+ years ago. Hold a grudge much?
I remember hearing that during 2.0 there was an unofficial policy to keep Brad away from Trey.
And during the breakup years, I think I heard he worked with the Black Crows a bunch?...

I think you are thinking of CK5 that worked for the Black Crowes.

Brad moved on to manage Stewart Copeland, and now Les Claypool/Primus.
I'm still mad at him for beating me in the championship of our football league last year. :frustrated:
The nugs.net episode is really good. Brad Serling is pretty intense, he also has a way more impressive resume than I thought.
