It gets a C.

So far, this leg of the tour...

7/30=C
7/31=C
8/01=C

Their consistancy is alarmingly reassuring.

:shakehead:

I'd rather wait than waste my time listening to craptacular sounding stream, when it works, over the interweb from some spunion's cell phone.  The sb's are better for this leg so it's totally worth the wait. And that wait is really only a few hours after the show.

When I got my last set of Checks from BofA, my banker was cute.  I jokingly asked her about "Beaver College"'s seal as my background.  She raised me a "Ball State".  Needless to say, I had a boner.

Wow what a great show!! The First Tube was probably the most energetic  :phish: performance I've seen. Sleeping Monkey was also cool because I was wanting Fishman to have a moment. The Harry Hood was a bit lackluster towards the end I thought--would have liked them to crank it up a bit more. The band felt really far away at that time.  There were so many highlights though--more than Thursday.  Really glad I went. Still had a mess getting in--took me 45 minutes after I got to RR to park and walk in.  Only 20 minutes back to my car afterwards which is better than an hour!!

And that's why we do it...  It may sound crappy at times (I don't watch the video at all, it would induce seizures or nausea) but when it is strong, you can get a real feel for the jams... Last night was no exception. :beerbang:

3.0 is starting to soar.

Some nice bust outs (First Curtain With since it was encore of the "last show ever") and some sweet Type II jamming.  Yeah, I'd walk a few hours there and back for a show within a hundred miles of the 3rd coast...

Just wakeing up to another tasty recording from Taylorc.
Last night was a blast. First good stream we've had so far this leg of the tour.
And another quote was added to my sig during the festivities:

I'm in a coffee shop. The only interweb in this beachy town as, for some reason, my blackberry is not interwebbing at all.  :frustrated: so, although we were partying and I wouldn't have been on the setlist hread I had no setlist access until just now aside from a post-set-one call from Slim who was stoked and rattled off some of set one to me "Curtain With!!!"
then, late night I get a text "sik sik sik!!"

this morning, I get "best show of this year. hicks guyforget and me called most of the 2nd set. I called Esther"

holy crap, what a sick looking show. Cannot wait to hear it.

More great jamming in Rock & Roll!! Honestly, if Hampton/June was 3.0 we should be calling this 3.1 at the very least -- there's a dynamic we just haven't been hearing this year.

Antelope went out on a limb unlike any '09 Antelope, and even Alaska, like BDTNL the night prior, briefly displayed a new wrinkle it had never taken on.

I had been on the fence about driving up to Maryland in two weeks, but that decision is on its way to no-brainer land.

Now listening to DWD, so far so good...

:-)

will d/l asap when I get home.

so far, only had time to listen to night 1.
imo, in my noobie opinion, that they are putting stuff out there on the same level as 1.0.

Fuck yeah dude, Tube was worth the wait and I guess I can thank you for my first Esther too, never thought I'd get to hear that one!  Mound was also a first timer for me, I think, and the Curtain With was my first "real" one since Coventry didn't count. Big ups to the paug crew in rows 42 and 43, I had a blast last night!

After that show and C&P the night before I can honestly say I've seen every song I ever really wanted to in person.

quick thoughts: very solid show, that is generating much debate here in CO... many of my peeps feel this was better than the other 2, but i feel that 1st night is still holding it down on top.

very well played first set with a nice groove to it, but nothing really too special IMO... 2nd set was once again off the hook!  RnR > DWD > Free was sweet... DWD stole the show IMO.

again, others in the group felt that the Tube & free were the hightlights, but i found both of those to be somewhat standard.

OK - finally finished listening to the whole night from LP... I gotta say, it rocked. The only down point, imo, was the beginning of Rock & Roll which Trey completely screwed... I mean, it sounds like he forgot how the lick is supposed to be played for the entire first verse. Am I the only one bothered by this?

Anyway, the whole show is really solid.

Bag - sweet opener!
With - nailed it -- just beautiful!
Mound - welcome back!
Jibboo - Fantastic building jam, starts so quiet. Loved it.
Guyute - sweet first set Guyute. Perfect placement.
PYITE - Always fun - not flubbed too bad.
Tube - not epic, but great jam and nailed throughout.
Alaska - Say what you will, I dig this tune - Page owns it!! Plus the jam is pure R&R fun.
'lope - Solid set closer.

R&R - mentioned how rough the start of this was, but the jam is solid. Like really solid. Love how it comes down to Mike in the end for the transition into...
DwD - Also an amazing jam. They are really listening to each other here. It shows! It's like they're finally getting their sea legs back!
Free - also nice - not out there, but really nice
Esther - You got your meat and potatoes in the first three songs of the set - the rest is dessert! Perfect!
Dirt - more dessert
Hood - perhaps the 2nd best hood of 3.0 - as a bonus, Trey nails the Mr. Minor segment!!

Sleeping Monkey - This song never gets old for me... NEVER!
1st Tube - This closed so many Trey shows during the "no Phish period" it seems weird to me here. Nothing bad about it, just strange. i would have been jumping up and down during it, fo sho!

Just listened to the first set while making dinner tonight (Thai food, if anyone cares)
Bag - Nice!  "Let's get this show on the road"
With - I REALLY enjoyed this.  Although the vocal harmonies could've been better.  Nice "With" jam that I would've loved another 5 minutes of.
Mound - Played pretty well for it having been so long.
Jibboo - I honestly don't remember too much about this one.
Guyute - Some flubs in there, but still good.
PYITE - Trey did something towards the end that made me stop what I was doing, then he stopped and let the other three do the ascending dissonant thing.  I have to go listen to that again.
Tube - Had me dancing around the kitchen like a fool.  Not epic, but a lot of fun.
Alaska - I was diggin' it.  I wonder if the lyrics have anything to do with "Into the Wild".
'lope - Nice, solid closer

Set two later...probably during tonight's show.

first thing i did when i got home was start DLing this show. it was almost a dream show for me.

after i listen i'll go back and review i guess, but i will note here that after the first set  i recall telling hicks i enjoyed this first set more thatn the first two nights combined. and the second set was no slouch either. it straight up rawked all the way through esther---man if i ever needed a cool down song it was that dirt--wheeew!

so, dream setlist for me...A+. FRee is the only song that is remotely not in my songs i dig list, but considering it was perfectly placed and played i cant complain. MIKE threw down some of the sickest fills in it as well.

then on the general performance, hood is te only song i thought there was some slacking in the jam sectoin, i'll have to hear it to see what i really heard. though it was almsot as if they had really shot their wad which was understandable at that point. though after the encore break they cam out re-energized and brought the roof...uh, stars down w/ 1st tube!

this show made me happy to be a phishhead again.

thanks to everyone that was present and of course the band. great job fellas. you deserve some kudos for bringing back the love.

PS., there were a LOT of teases last night, and i havent noticed anyone here mention some of them, OR the whole deal about trey giving everyone secret hand signals to STFU or whatever it was. AND how about trey moonwalking!!
--IF all that was already mentioned, sorry, just trying to catch up here.

peace,
slim.

Red Rocks Amphitheater, Morrison, CO

Set 1: AC/DC Bag, The Curtain With, Mound, Gotta Jibboo, Guyute, Punch You In The Eye, Tube*, Alaska, Run Like An Antelope

Set 2: Rock and Roll > Down with Disease -> Free, Esther, Dirt, Harry Hood

Encore: Sleeping Monkey > First Tube

Wow, what a sick show.  After finishing listening to this show and all 3 previous shows I can confidently say that phish is back in a big way.

I think I still give a slight edge to the 2nd night as my favorite, but this show was still better than any show in the first leg imo.

Curtain with was gorgeous, Jibboo was great, Tube was funktastic right out of the gate, and although parts of antelope were def pretty bad, there were also some redeeming moments of it.

The entire second set was pretty much on fire as well with DWD being the highlight for me, and best Hood of 3.0 imo

First Tube was also fantastic with Trey shredding faster than I thought he still could at times!

Welcome To the after party. Sick ass DWD no?
Here's another armchair q-back monday morning hindsight is 20/20 review.... :-P

Bag - very sweet... another chance for Llama opener blown to pieces!  But that's okay, has one of my fav phish lyrics: brain dead and made of money, no future at all!
Curtain With - well played and nice jamming in the With section, yeah, I could have grooved a bit longer on that but it's 1st set and we thank you for playing it again with fresh chops (last played as encore of "last show ever")
Mound - great bust out, well played, not mind blowing, but smile inducing for sure.
Jibboo - good danceable groove, I've always liked this one, and this one gets you there.
Guyute - I love this song.  Some very noticable flubs in it. 6.7.09 much better
PYITE - Another groove fest, they're keeping the pace up nicely here
Tube - and into the funkfest we are definitely smiling here and laughing at how nutty the lyrics are; classic nonsense phish lyrics sung as if they really mean something.
Alaska - not the worst song ever, a bit of a breather and sing along if you want type of thing
'lope - we love it and thanks for not following it w/ Char 0, really.

R&R - yeah, rough start as had been stated, but then it finds its' way into set 2 face melting
dwd - man, Mike is just sick in this!  TaylorC's pull is so damn sweet here (and everywhere too), the whole r&r>dwd has just great Mike that just aproaches the threshhold of being muddy but never crosses it: perfection!  I can listen to this again and again; great segue that you all knew was coming from the sound that the tail end of r&r was melting into
Free - well segued, and still melting and mikeing.  My fav set of the run easily and still a few more songs to go.
Esther - another great bust out and well played.  never a fav song of mine, not sure why, but I won't kick her out of bed; I'm smiling and enjoying this composed beasty.
Dirt - ahhh, relaxing now, much better than Joy which just doesn't flow like a song called Joy should, but Dirt is smooth clean fertile soil...
Harry - Wonderful little teases by Trey in the extended intro (thanks for taking the time to make this so so fucking sweet).  I love this version as much or more than version from "original recipe Phish" I do, I really do... It is so well played and I can hear Mike and Trey and all the nuances so well...

Monkey - heads nod in approval, nothing earth shattering, but gives me an easy laugh and into
1st tube - This could just go on and on and on and we'd still be dancing and melting nice way to end it all...

I have to go back and listen to the whole run again (haven't heard 8/2/09 yet but you know what I mean), but I really like this set 2 more than others for now.
See you all back on the shoreline live thread after the kids are sent to bed (dang 14 yr old stays up late now and thinks my music taste is weird; she'll have to come around some day).

in general, great show.
my one criticism (other than guyute) is that I wanted to hear more Page in the mix.
The Curtain With - aaah
RnR > DWD killed

Mike is a wild man, Fish is coming into his own.

For me, this run can be listened to in the same week (maybe same day) as 1.0 and hold it's own.

Just relistened to the first set today and I gotta say I think it's the best Set 1 from the red rocks run. You got a rageing AC/DC Bag to open, An amazinly well played Curtain WITH next. The Mound bust-out I've been so waiting for with Mike dropping mad Bass-Bombs throughout it. A very groovy Jibboo, a fine Guyute an always loved PYITE and then a fan requested Tube full of thick luscious funk, Alaska has a nice laid back groove perfect for calming you down between the Tube before it and the rockin' Antelope to follow, which sends the set off with a great energy and excitement.

just listened through tube. i def need to stop listening to these sbds., they make everything sound so harsh.
if someone can rec a good audience, LMK.
anyway, even though its a stretch i still think i hear, as i did at the show, trey playing the lick to "takes a train to cry" before BAG. yeah its a dylan tune, but it also was in the GD/JGB rotation.
hand signal banter after curtain with?
still no confirmation on the moonwalk?
was i dreaming?
and i still have to check on teh low rider teases in disease, but i'm fairly sure they were there.

Ugh.

I'm not going to take the time to cut and paste what I said in the live setlist thread...

...but count me in the camp that likes his Curtains "With-out".

Basically, I like my rift part in rift, I like my reba part in reba, and I like the concise version because it perfectly pumps you up for a big jam tune to follow.

I will be happy if/when they stop playing the "With".

agreed, as I listened to this Curtain W/ I wondered if it would be as good as DC '00?  Possibly and the idea that they were playing it still relatively new in Aug.88, their first visit to CO made this version that much sweeter.

Source: B&K4022 (ortf) > Sonosax > 744T
Location: ots/dfc
Transfer: 744T>wavelab (fades/resampling/dithering)>cd wave>flac
Taped & transferred by Craig Davis

I

Bag - definite gamehendge aura at RR I'm sure, much improved sound over the two previous sources, "lets get this show on the road" elicts cheers, change in recording near 2:58, better, good opening.

The Cutrain W/ - jam opens near 8:30, was surprised to see it on the setlist, preety sweet for 2nd slot, tight jam, fast, Mike is sick and consistent, Fish playing well, he's defintely turned a corner, nice Page, Trey into trill-out, waves crashing, nice version(nearly 21 years earlier busting this one out as well in CO.).

Mound - appropriately enough, nice bust out, trippy Trey, hearing this reminds me of back in the day listening to '94 cassettes, Mike sounds preety loud on this one, no distortion mostly clean sound, this tune reminds me of the west, trippy subtle Page, Page bringing it home, nice.

Jibboo - jam open nears 2:59, loop tease by Trey, very light in background, Mike ever so subtly adding variations which makes his linear parts and the song/jam more interesting, almost stately opening, more looseness in this jam more then I've heard in awhile, solid version.

Guyute - the ugly Pig.

PYITE - not a big fan of this tune, I do like Landlady as a solo piece but we all have them, this is one of my meh Phish songs.

Tube - overall a preety consistent set this far, the last Tube I enjoyed hearing was JB, Page strong and varied out of the tube, nice funk riffage, not overtly excessive, patient which is really the hallmark of these RR shows, a patient, subtle Phish but still w/ tremendous power and energy, good jam but maybe I'm kind of bored w/ this #

Alaska - vaudville Trey, segue way into Say, Say, Say?

Antelope - ser last good Antelope I've heard was Hampton '09, nice opening, Mike is the man, again recording is preety titty, Mike initiating risk, weird jam around 5:00, a reflection on Trey's 93-94 listening no doubt, jam slows and morphs slightly as if on cue w/ my last statement > trying to build tension underneath, no real theme, similar to previous nights Melt in its free jamming, quickly ascends, moans, cries, back into 'lope proper, the first real risk taking of the night, weird jamming before Rocco, near New Orleans vibe, Trey goes back into trill into Rocco, interesting version.

II

Rock and Roll - jam opens near 4:34, nice opening, great energy by all, Fishman prominent, Trey and Mike deviating slightly, Mike thumping along, jam remains linear still h/e, Mike kicking ass per usual, slight Gin tease near 9:20, nice momentum near 9:50 jam settles in, start/stop, Trey w/ Wentian like tone, watery Mike, Page on the clav, jam is like their jamming on an ending theme, weird ending, solo Mike, into

DwD - jam opens up at 3:35 after a previous slight flub in Trey's outro riff, I think he extendeed it another measure to repeat/cover, this tune still being the most consistent jam of 3.0, solid linear jamming out of the gate, Page rocking the clav underneath near 5:45, Mike and Fish hitting it hard, reminding of Japan 00, Mike driving the jam, slightly ahead of the beat by a nano-second, jam mellows around 7:16, riff/tease?, nice downshift into a Trey trill led jam, pace quickens, Bob Weir esque Trey, laying down the clank, out of that Trey, Mike and Page play around this theme, nice subtle jamming here, optimistic vibe but w/ that Phish "x" factor, this jam feels more realized and probably the result of rehearsal jamming, 11:52 in still nice Clifford Ball esque jam, after '09 DwD will be a prime candidate for mix material, punchy mellowness, nice jam into

Free - classic combination at this point going back to 26June95, as usual solid jam, punctual.

what do I hear?  oh yeah baby... circus theme into

Esther - slight wind which supports the story for well, easily my fav. Phish song, not a super huge fan of composed tunes that don't deviate ala Fluffhead but this one is a masterwork, slight off tempo, not quite perfect but still fun to hear, no real flubs but first time in almost 9 years, cool nirvana esque work into the nasty part of town, good Trey solo minus the last 2 or 3 notes, really got chills hearing that.

Dirt - time to pack one.

Hood - first of the run, jam opens near 6:00, sound of smething crashing/falling near taper, solid opening, quick pace, patient Trey and Mike, spinning ideas off one another, similar to the Garcia/Lesh dynamic, Trey nicely in front, slight '94/'95 expressiveness, Fish eager underneath, almost 10:00 in jam continues to ascend incrementally, nothing too outrageous, solid version.

E

Monkee - interesting choice, solid version.

First Tube - nice way to end the show w/ a bang!, Phish pulling the ying and yang, this augments any set anywhere, solid version this far at 3:07, it would be cool to hear Mike improvise his bass line but it might throw it off, this tune nearly celebrating its 10 year Phish Anniv. although everyone knows it goes back to early '98 w/ Trey's 8Foot Tubes, nice crescendo of cacophony, Trey no longer using his backwards effect pedal for his leads which is cool and different to hear, subtle deviations by Mike towards outro, preety good version.

Overall a nice continuation of the previous 2 RR shows, I really liked the Curtain W/, DwD, the first Esther in nearly 9 years although the middle section was slightly off, still killer to hear and, a rocking First Tube to end.  Again a solid B+ for this show!

 i dunno... guess i'm just stubborn. comes from years of being a GD SBD snob. also the fact that since i pretty much ignored PH2.0 i've not had the chance to really listen to phish boards since 93 or whenever it was that they stopped leaking/circulating them.

I just got home from a "non" wireless week of vacationing up in northern Maine a couple of hours ago.  As soon as I was done unpacking and the such I downloaded this.  I have so much catching up to do I'm not sure where to start.  I'm currently on The Curtain With.  It sounds like the Red Rocks run was pretty sweet from begining to end.  I had 7/30 and 7/31 with me for the trip and enjoyed 7/31 a lot.

Set I for this night is the best 1st set, Wait until you get to 08-2!! Then you can go ahead and skip 08-05, Except the  DWD, and move straight into 08-07, and be prepared to have your face ruled.

Set I for this night is the best 1st set, Wait until you get to 08-2!! Then you can go ahead and skip 08-05, Except the  DWD, and move straight into 08-07, and be prepared to have your face ruled.

Thanks for the advice.  It sounds like I should have plenty of time to listen to the shows that I missed tonight as there doesn't seem to be any streaming going on at the Gorge.

Yeah, no streams, but we've still been having good times on the live setlist threads.

Yeah I'm looking forward to tonight's.  I even picked up a 5 Hour Energy just in case it is needed as I woke up at 6am eastern time this morning to pack and hit the road home.

Have we talked about the LA Woman tease in DWD?

This might be the best show I've seen since 7/11/00.

side note: Trey's tone sounds much harsher on these SBDs than it did amongst those Red Rock formations.

As I said to Slim, ditch the boards and get the B&K's. And while I am aware from an old post you feel B&K/DPA's light on the low end (I think you made the comment in the Asheville thread), this source is money. I actually enjoy their transparency, especially when a room is conducive to huge bass, which inevitably tends to wipe out many Schoeps models as well as other makes of mics.

this is VERY VERY VERY true.
i really was sober enough to completely be objective as to the sounds i was perceiving throughout the run, and i did not once think  trey's tone was annoying in the slightest bit. though when i listen to the SBDs from these shows i absolutely cant stand it. in fact i just listened to the SBD ghost/wolfmans from the first night and thought to myself that i couldnt ever listen to it again i hated how it sounded so much. i guess i'll be ditching the boards from now on.

though i DO also think that the live mix is not as good as it could be. the sound guy is new, right? if it is a new guy, i'd definitely say he has some learning to do. though i do believe that Trey could help the sitchey as well. there is no way i could believe that if trey actually listened to the boards himself that he could be happy how they sound...... hmmm.....

I found Trey's tone to be a bit harsh at times at RR.

so, rocking through these RR shows again today.
i still consider this first set one of the best of the summer. guyute being the only real low point for me. i dont mind the placement, but the flubs are annoying. i say shelf it if you cant nail a tune like this. just my opinion.
a couple of new things i noticed this time around. 1. this TUBE is teh H34t!! PAGe and Mike absolutely tear this version to bits!! i hope people go back and chekc this one out a few more times. i now want to go back and compare to the PITT version that i dug the most from the first leg to see which i like th emost.
2. even though people are hating on this somg, and i admit i took off for the bathroom when it started, this verison of ALASKA is PERFECTed. A+. i'm not sure of they will ever play a better version and i dig it 100%.

At every show I saw this summer, Trey's tone sounded SOOO much better than it comes out on the LP sbds
