just to get your week off on the wrong foot... my show choice will be delayed a bit. i was a wee bit too drunk and stoned last night to attempt with any patience to upload my choice to sendspace or BT. i'll be home at noon CST and will do it then!
i'd also like to take a moment to say how awesome this idea is and that we've embraced it so well. the 4 shows we've listened to so far have been widely varied in year, setlist, playing, style, vibe... its a great testament to phish's abilities...

I mean, I love UNH 93, 12.7.97, and set 2 of 12.14.95 still gets me every time, but there doesn't seem to be much point in nominating an official release . . .
no, i dont think there are any rules here as to what show you can choose... it just seems that thus far all the chosen shows were lesser known, or under the radar in some way...
and perhaps some dont agree with that... some may say that 12/9/97 isnt under the radar cuz its from fall 97, others have never heard it...
although i have a sinking feeling that my pick will NOT be from the under the radar category... but perhaps from the, "i havent heard this in a while, and my god is it SICK" category... ;)

If I remember correctly, this was the first night of on-site camping?? Or maybe that was 98. Can't remember, but this show brings back some wicked memories. It involved licking a puddle of liquid from a stranger's hand and feeling completely spun by the time Mike started belching out Meat. The rest was a mind-blowing blur. I didn't quite wake up until Fishman started singing Purple Rain. Summer 99 really showcased a whole different sound, and this one is no exception. But anyway, more later when I listen to the show again. Nice pick, jedifunk.
I had a BBQ/house party a few weeks after this show. A girlfriend of a friend shows up with this show. I was floored. It is still one of my favs. Good pick! :-D :phish:

do you mean literally in the lot?-- or the satelite campgrounds?
never knew the allowed actually camping in the lot... up to 98 at least, it was still a red and blue flashing lights--get the hell outta the lot fest.

I did on site camping summer 03 and 04 but in 2000 I camped a little spot called Dead Creek. I was an awesome little camp site and one of the nights umphreys Mcgee played it was a rockin time...only prob was it was a long walk to the lot
It wasn't actually "on-site," but it was an "official" site in an open field near corn fields (like the rest of Noblesville). Tons of camping space, and a brief walk to the lots. Those were the days. In past year you had to stay at a random campsite that sometimes required a bug-eyed walk along the road for a while. The official site was cool because it was large and free of police and whatnot.

Conclussion: Great show. The opening Friend>MLT>Post was well played and sustained the energy of the entire show. The jam around 6:30 of Toe led the way. Many good shows on this tour again the improv at this show a summation. Good pick Funk :-D

It may not be under the radar - I know I've heard *about* the show. But until now, I've never listened to it. So instead of reviewing based on memory (and one more listen), I'll ignore the setlist, put the files in order, let 'em play, and just jot down some thoughts as they come.
Set I:
MEAT - I dunno. I kind of think this works better live than, say, blasting in the car. But if you're going to get it, it might as well be as an opener, followed immediately afterwards by something, well, 'meatier'.
MFMF - And there it is: nice! Right away, this sounds crisp. This is gonna be an enjoyable set / show to hear :)
Opening well played . . . transition's a bit clunky, but no biggie. Nice crescendo. What is that effect called -- the one that's a little like a 737 revving its engines before takeoff? I like :) A little bit of ambient noodling coming out of MFMF. Hmmm. Seems a bit early for this. Wonder what's up?

MAKISUPA - I Needed something lighter right now; perfect placement for me. Trey empties his drawer of keywords - heheh. Cool birthday bit for CK. They're clearly havin' a good time out there. A fun version, though maybe not as musically interesting as some . . .
ISIA - Oof! Like a sharp kick to the gut, just as the set was seeming too good to be true. Normally, I'd be all over the FF button. Maybe this one's special. I let it keep going. Nope. Back on the positive side, this seemed shorter than usual.
BOOGIE - Here's where my tastes diverge from others. I'm not usually excited to hear this one. But this is a fine version. Much better than average, imo. Mike's doing a fine job carrying this along. Around 7:45, it starts picking up. 9:00, I have to admit, this is really growing on me. But it doesn't last long. Back into the main theme at 10:15, and fade away soon after. I'm sure I'll listen to this one again.
CAVERN - I guess it *is* that time. Extra verse? Not tonight.
Overall impressions, half an hour in, I thought this was headed to the stratosphere. Although it didn't sustain - for me - this has to be one of the better first sets I've heard lately. And a nice recording taboot.

BOAF - Trey repeating this really catchy hook at around 10:30. Quiets down a bit, and around 12:00 I swear I hear Trey briefly quoting from the 11.29.98 Simple jam (which sticks out, 'cause I really enjoyed it). 15:30, kind of trippy. 19:15, Something concrete is starting to materialize, and it's
WALK AWAY - Cool. Always nice to hear this one. I was slow to warm to BOAF, and I've never completely warmed to it. But that might be because I wasn't introduced to it by versions like the one a few minutes ago. Walk Away is fun, if a little sloppy. Wondering if there'll be a segue out of it . . . not really, but out of the 'noise' at the end, I can almost recognize a couple notes by Trey. Roses? No, it's
ANTELOPE - Woohoo! I'm really glad right now that I didn't cheat and look at the setlist in advance. That was a nice surprise. Sometimes I have a hard time getting into Antelopes if the recording is below par, but that's definitely no problem here. I'm enjoying Trey's patience developing this one. I'm sure it will rage, but they're not rushing it. 7:20, here we go. I've minimized my MSword window, and its all Phish. Productivity can wait :) Around 9:00, the Pre-marco groove sets in nicely. I'm starting to wonder if this is a record-long pre-Marco groove - Except that it isn't. Another gear explodes around 12:15. Pre-Marco (for real?) at 13:30. Yes, it is. Wow. I've head some butchered Antelopes in my later shows, but this ain't one of them. Very nice :)
SUZY - Yes, keep that energy up! Is it me, or does everyone seem half a step slow on this Suzy? 1:30, Page's 1st solo, and no piano. Sounds like they're going to stretch this one . . . 3:15, and now with the loop, there's no doubt about it. 5:00ish, very mellow and jazzy stuff from Page. My favorite "new" Suzy might still be Darien, 2000, but this is really good stuff.
PURPLE RAIN - So bad, it's great. Just listen to it :)
YEM - Purple rain was cute, but it's definitely time for something "real" again. YEM works. This one goes straight from normal tramps jam to bass outro jam (which, don't get me wrong, is simply great). 13:30, and I'm starting to collect my thoughts to say something, when the vocal jam starts(!) I'd give it an incomplete, but it wasn't unfinished. I dunno what to think about this. It was great while it lasted, but *really* short. Barely a vocal jam, and no Trey :( Long delay afterwards . . . must be encore break
LOVING CUP - Nice choice. Would have been a shame to see the set fizzle out with an a capella song or a bouncin'. LC falters a little bit early on, but is absolutely *triumphant* by 4:30.
Overall impressions: Excellent 2nd set, and a very nice show. Kind of left me cold at a couple times, though I'm sure the YEM won't hit me as hard next time, when I know what's coming (and what isn't). Glad to add it to the collection - thanks, Jedi :beers:

Yes, but onsite camping is connected to the Venue by walking. It was LITERALLY "ONSITE". It was not "PARKING LOT" camping. It was referred to by Deer Creek as "onsite camping". And at 15 dollars for three nights in 2000, I LOVED the onsite campground. (The police presence their was pretty shitty). Any time you are encouraged to shower with random females is alright by me!

Whipping Post - another great transition. great jam - they clearly stuck to their own style and didn't try to be ABB, which made it work. IMO Trey's vocals were lacking, didn't have the grit that Gregg A has.

HYHU, Purple rain - Does the Fishman tune make a great show or ruin the flow :| I'd go with this one. It's not a cliche like the earlier years, and then Fish pours his heart out :-P
YEM-some Trey flubs in the beginning, nice nirvanah section, but i agree the jam is too short. gotta love Mike. With all the great versions of other tunes here, this is a surprise that it's just OK
Loving cup - nice way to end it.

I agree. I was sort of reminded of Page singing Franklin's Tower during the Phil & Phriends run in '99. I remember thinking: Wow, I never really noticed how young and innocent Page sounded until I heard him on that song. Total contrast with Jerry. But you couldn't help but notice how much fun they were having with it, and the Whipping Post from this show kind of strikes me the same way $.02
ok, so i know its my pick, but i thought i'd chime in here and give my impression of this show.... that i chose.
1st set: well, its the green crew set what can i say... we picked em, and they sticked them... love the choices we made and the band just nailed it!
meat - picked by my friend bean, decent fun opener
mfmf->mlt->whipping post - this shit is HOT! always great to see the rare mfmf... love how its picks up ambient steam as it heads into MLT... i still dont hear anything that sounds the same from version to version, but i enjoy it non the less.... and you can just feel the HEAT coming off of it as it moves into whipping post.... and this version SMOKES! trey's vocals are a little quiet at first but then he really gets into it... and the outro jam on this one is top shelf. just love this jam!
makisupa->bday fun - nice choice after the face melter that was whipping post... fun and groovy... and the bday fun is a kick, although on tape it gets a bit old after awhile... but its worth it.
saw it again - love this song
boogie on - more dance party! :beers: more mike! he just rules this jam... at this point in the show, they are so in sync its insane... jammin on all four cylinders... very crisp and sharp... love it.
cavern - nice way to end the set
set 2 - another great set... both sets stand on their own. a great 2 set show.
birds -> walk away - great birds, top 5 version IMO... contains that "sonic ambience" that defines the summer 99 tour... and i love that sound... layers upon layers over textures and moods.... just beautiful work by all 4 guys here... really just a superb jam... and the segue into walk away is smooth and perfect.
antelope - this lope RAGES! as mentioned already, there are a LOT of gears on the gearshift on this night... they just keep it going and going... then they add just a touch of 99 space (perfect amount and well placed)... a top version IMO.
suzy - YES... PAGE... i love the baby grand during a funk session... and he's all over this one.... dance dance dance, dance the whole night long! this is my current song/version to listen to over and over, till i fall over from all the dancing i just did... then i replay it and dance some more! so funky, so fun... and again, they are so "hooked up" its not even funny... on point fellas!
purple rain - not usually a fishman tune kinda guy... but i thought this was perfect time and place for some more fishman humor... and i love purple rain... and then with him not knowing the words... great fun...
yem - so ok... so its not the longest yem ever, but this one jams... trey obviously wanted to get right to the jam... and then they've got that boogie on jam inside yem! that shit is hot, great work by mike again.
loving cup - great choice... high energy closer for a great great show... and they nail it! if the creek had a roof it was blowin completely off!
so there it is... my choice... hope you guys enjoyed it as much as i do... its really fallen into heavy rotation since i "rediscovered it"

in fact, i'm especially interested in the show-pickers' reasons for picking a given show (beyond the obvious-- that you like it :wink:)
i'd give a rundown, but this show is shaping up to have the most agreement of any one so far.
basically i love the first set. i like meat more than most folks, i think. same with saw it again, which i love. the birthday moment keeps up such a great vibe. the only part i wasn't thrilled with is cavern, which despite its near ubiquity as a set closer i find to be a lame set closer.
set II, same thing. yay for the spacey BOAF and everything else, though yeah, that brief yem doesn't quite take off the way one would want it to. and a nice fiery loving cup to finish things.
i've heard relatively few summer '99s, so it was great hearing such a good one.

Yup. I don't think there's anything wrong with folks commenting on their own choices. If anything, it might be the most interesting perspective . . . to find out what led someone to highlight that show in particular. Though it probably is good to hold back for a few days to avoid influencing others' reactions.

Since you're up next, I'll mention that if it looks like I'm emphasizing "the bad" at the expense of "the good," it's just 'cause I'm trying to highlight areas where there might be a difference of opinion (which is what makes a discussion thread work, imo). I'm not trying to affect some jaded. negative persona - just trying to get discussion going. So for Jedi's show, that meant fessing up to being a "saw-it-again-hater" :-P and wondering what could have been re: the YEM. I'd still rank it ahead of any of the 99 shows I got to see personally, precisely because it's a 2-set show. Off the top of my head, the Great Woods shows during the summer, and the Portland shows during the winter all seem either top-heavy or bottom-heavy. Like Jedi mentioned, this week's choice offers two sets that can stand on their own, which is pretty cool.

yeah, i prefer to use a .sit for compression, but that requires that the person opening it has stuffit....
.sit used to be mac only, but now that stuffit has gone multiplatform (mac, windows, linux) its more universal... but still requires the downloading of stuffit.. but stuffit is the best compression/decompression software available IMO.

Yeah, it's a great show. The first set wasn't as great as the fluffing of it was (even though it would have been a ton of fun to see live). The second set was, however, OUTSTANDING. The Antelope is GREAT... as is the Suzy. I'll give my thoughts on this show later. (However, the YEM was kind of lame...imo...).

I'm gonna dust this one off tomorrow night. It's probably been about 6 years since I last listened to it. Great show, one of my favorites from that tour.

MFMF- good version, excellent segue into
My left toe- nasty song imo. I really like this version, it builds nicely into Whipping Post. I like how the boys make a seamless shift from 4/4 to 6/8. Very tight transition and nice jamming.
Whipping Post-I was a bit turned off by it. Trey either didnt wan to play or forget the chorus riff, and as a result page played it, which made it sound weird to me. I did like the segue into it. The jam is kind of weak imo. It lacks the passionate drive that duane and company had when they performed it live. was this preplanned? By the sound of it, it sounds spontanious and unplanned.
Makisupa Policeman-good version, i like the happy bday section, I found it humorous.

Boogie on reggea woman-wow!!!! this smokes. top notch version. Really tight and really funky.
Cavern-solid version, trey is in rock star mode, I like it.

as a huge ABB fan(original lineup) I'm use to hearing the jam a certain way. I did enjoy it, but it was abit too spacey/melodic at times. but to each his own....

but isnt that the point of a band covering another bands tune? to take it and make it their own? of course it doesnt sound the way ABB used to play it... they werent trying to make it sound that way... it is no less sick because its not in the ABB style...

Just finished Set I on my way home tonight. Never heard this before, nor many other 99's so its hard for me to compare this with other contemporary shows...so excuse my non-99 listening ass :-P
Meat- better live than on tape Im sure...thankfully
MFMF is up next and really gets the show moving. Nice solid version...cant go wrong with My Friend
MLT, interesting segue, not real dfamiliar with this tune, but Mikes playing is hypnotic
Whipping Post...I would have been losing my shit as they started playing this...Treys vocals were rather weak and the playing is a bit sloppy early on, I was beginning to cringe when they finally synced up and blew the roof off the place by the end of the jam..very nice...rocking kickdown
Makisupa is a great breather after the Post...Keef :banana:
the birthday buisiness would have been fun to see live but doesn't come across that well listening from my car
Saw it Again...hated this the first time I heard it...now I've grown to like this tune..pretty standard version
Boogie On..my favorite Stevie song EVER. Loved this before Phish busted it out in 97, then I loved it even more. This version may not be the best ever but I would have been dancing my ass off. Again Mike sounds phenomenal.

Meat- I am a big fan of meat.and this was the first time meat was an opener.it might not have that opener feel, but to me, signifies that they are in a good mood and just going with it.had not appeared in the last 25 shows.the mike solo section towards the end was quite meaty and deelish.
My Friend- my friend is my favorite phish song.it is such a shame that the beginning is always messed up, though.this one wasnt too bad, but did have a couple flubs.cool though, especially that it was played as the second song, and not as the opener slot, which it often appears in.this was not played in the last 32 shows.another kick.nice outro jam into...
Left Toe- always a good time.rare tune, maybe not for 99, but cool none the less.i like how the jam really changes directions a few minutes before Whipping Post.the segue is as smooth as it gets.
Post-definitely the show highlight.energy was super high for this.i like how thet really take the jam out there for a while.and then when trey comes back in with the "sometimes i feel"....you remember that they are still playing Whipping Post!cool that trey took the lead.this was the biggest kickdown.not played in the last 207 shows and waas the last time ever played.

Birds- definite 99 jam feel to this.hard to explain that type of style, but is unmistakeable when heard.just like great woods, they take this one out there for a while.i really like tis jam even though it doesnt really vary too much.but that can be a good thing.the changes that they do make are subtle and appropriate.great segue into
Walk Away- always a treat.not played in the last 35 shows.
Antelope- always good to hear songs that usually close sets right in the middle.this one is pretty good.it is antelope and does what it is.the breakdown after the buildup is extra funky.and there was a little stash tease in the intro.(right here i say that the new girl is not reading this because it is too long)nothing too nuts, but good version.
Suzy- not played in the last 27 shows.extra funky sections at the end with page and mike.mike's line is serious!great suzy!
Purple rain-i like fishman tunes.to me, especially later on in the years, i t signified that they were having a good time.same goes for lawn boy.humurous rendition.also, not played in the last 209 shows and was the last time played!
YEM-was yem.boogie teases.not much going on here.
Cup-standard, but good.

Makisupa (great version! I remember playing this for my younger brother (Chris) on his B-Day (9/4) driving out to the Gorge for Fall '99. It's funny cause whenever we roll one up he never passes it to anyone, so everone in the car had a good laugh during Fish's part. :lol:)

This was a good meat... I didn't like earlier versions where they couldn't hit the break well. This was good in that respect, and I like the song. Strangely enough, I like it as an opener.
MFMF, this might as well have been the opener. It's one of my favorite orchestral pieces. It was fairly general, but the bustout of something like MLT afterwards was very cool
MLT, Just a chill song. I really like it here and the transition to WP is very smooth.
Whipping Post, I suppose I'n not the usual WP fan, but I really really liked this version. It just kinda built up from the MLT groove.
Makisupa + HB Kuroda, This whole thing was good and what made it so good was the birthday jam. I like the interaction. Musically, it was good.
I Saw it Again, I don't know if I'm on the fence about this song or not. My opinion always differs. This time, I thought it was average.
Boogie On, WHOA! Gordo! This is my Set1 highlight. Mike was on all kinds of fire.
Cavern, Average, and as always, a good closer.
Birds, I love this version, which I agree, has an unmistakeable 99 feel to it. And very good 99. It's just damned good. Edging on ambience, but still structured enough to get down with. I like when songs like this fall apart (as this one did around 14:30) but come back with Fish just hitting a groove and getting everyone else to come along and keep jamming. Kinda changes the mood too, sounding like something from the Siket Disc. (Is that a Bye Bye Foot sounding jam? It sounds familiar in any case). I'd call it a typical transition into...
Walk Away, I don't know whether to think that this is a treat or not. Maybe I'm not a big fan of the song, so I don't really call it a bustout, but it was played well, and I liked it here.
Auntie Lope, What I don't like about antelope, is that sometimes they'll build it up so damn much, that I'll get worn out. This one has a very chill segment, almost stopping before the buildup (which was not insane). It's already a good rendition. The end is standard
Suzy, I always hve high hopes for Page when the breaks come... This one is slow and a bit groovy, and although I didn't get the ultra-funk clav, the breaks were good. I liked the second one extended over trey's loops. BTW, this is a place where I do NOT like the clap-along. Man, Page had a nice little piano piece going on and then the clapping starts. Luckily they break out of it a few measures later and get the thing speeding up. Page is shining now, and I like Trey's little guitar runs. And then the stop for Page's (Superstition? or some Stevie Wonder song that I'm brain farting on) tease. When the lyrics started back up, I could have gone for another round of Page solo, but alas it ends. Might surprise many that this is a highlight of this set for me. I like those breaks.
