Soooo... That second set, huh? Man I love this band! Covering an album so obscure that it doesn't even really exist!  :phish:

We all remember the spots in the bands history where they learn an album for Halloween, or the gigs playing small clubs in Europe, and then the after effects in progressing stylistically, and helps forge another layer of creativity to their music. Remain In Light is probably the best example of this, imo. I'd like to think that the same will happen with this choice they made for tonight's show. That said, I thought it was a great show, and those that were there in person got a gem of a performance. I listened to it via mxlr stream, and it was two different sources, bith seemed to sound like AUDs, and neither got shut down. Sound quality of source for set one wasn't bad, but the second source that I switched to before set 2 started sounded a lot better. I'm really interested in getting to watch the video from set 2, since they were all decked out in white, and Trey was playing an all white, Strat style guitar. Anyone know if it's one of Paul's, a Fender Strat, or some other guitar company? Also, Tweezer was filthy, per usual. I love where they are, especially how far they've come since the Coventry disaster shows.

This is a real album.  There was only one copy in Portland.  Hicks had it on tape when he was 12.  He used to play it on a boom box in his neighbors basement.

Trey’s Guitar Rig has some deets in Trey’s strat and such.

"This is an Ed O'Brien Stratocaster (EOB Model).  It's decked out in white @drstrings.  The CAE wah and RST-24 are also done in white. Trey's amps are off stage but he still appears to have access to most effects via the RST."
Pics at the link.

We saw that Strat offstage at Hampton.

Sets 1 & 2 were so good last night.
Enjoyed the Tweezer on the way in this morning but, although I played the entire set, I slept through it all. Replayed the Tweezer though because Tweezer.

I dunno if I would call it dark exactly.

It was like some weirdo blend of new wave and krautrock, designed to sound like some lost album from the early 80s written by somebody with only a tenuous grasp of the English language.

A mindfuck for sure.

That's pretty sweet that he was playing an Ed O'Brien strat! I feel like he met Trey at some point and they sort of hit it off?

But yeah hearing Trey play a Strat for an entire set was one of the coolest parts of the whole thing IMO.

Pretty slick production with the cubes and light up stage too.

That was the phishiest thing I've seen them do. Probably more so than chilling thrilling. The choreographed dances and jams were on point. They all played their parts and executed. Psyched for next three nights !!

I caught from the final hurrah>end of set and it was fantastic and weirder than I was expecting.

Midway thru set 3, tornados came through at my moms house and we lost power and internet.  Lots of trees down and our farm truck got smashed like a tin can.   I'm about to put on the headphones and listen to this shit loud as fuck as I clean up.

Dang, that's some Halloween craziness, glad to hear nobody got hurt! We had a tornado near my house last week which is really weird for Oregon. It was a little one, but still scary to see all the dirt and leaves suddenly flying in the air.

Must be said, first set was great, too.
After a re-listen, 2nd holds up and is one of the best Halloween costume sets yet.
3rd set doesn't blow the doors off but it's solid. Tweezer is cool and ASIHTOS is really nice.

That's a fantastic description of the album.

I have to listen again, clear-headed and outside of the spell of "the moment," but my initial feeling was that it's for sure a top tier Halloween set.  Ditto on the first set love and the Tweezer.

Truly one of the coolest things they've ever pulled off, IMO. The concept, the execution, the music, the lyrics. It all hit real hard with me.  These guys seem to have an endless supply of genius ideas.

This is what space smells like. Death don't hurt very long. We will out live our brains. I hope someone notices. SO many f'n fantastic one liners in there.

This was stunning top to bottom. The energy and intensity of the band was like nothing I saw all summer. From the first song, everything just seemed to have a little extra mustard on it. And the costume was bananas. Can't wait to hear what they do with some of these songs in the future. If not better than Thrilling Chilling, in the same ballpark. Can't wait for tonight, though it is possible Vegas will kill me before Saturday.

I purposely tried to no-spoiler myself for this one, and managed to do a pretty decent job of doing so. So, upon waking up this morning to learn about all the shenanigans involved in Phish pulling off the "trick aaanndd trick" prank, was pretty hilarious. Upon actually reading the "reviews", and hearing some of what was in the Playbill, definitely made me feel a bit silly, but enjoying being caught up in the prank. Re-listened to the set from the Live Phish mP3 source, since what I heard last night was from two different AUD sources, streamed thru mxlr. First one thru set one was decent, but I found a better one before set 2, and finished out the show with it. Quality sound, taboot. Being able to hear more of the lyrics when I re-listened today, there are some pretty funny, clever, puntastic, and also topical "ways of the crazy world we live in", and the more I listened, the more the Phish goofiness (that is often opined over) came shining thru. The band has out done themselves again, and reminded us of the core principles of the relationships they have with us fans. Also, at a time when there's been so much seriousness going on in US politics, it's a much needed reprieve from all that partisan nastiness.

After the 24hr rule, I look forward to some reviews of those 'Paugers (and friends of), who were in attendance.

I also tried to do no spoilers but around 45 minutes into the set I deduced that it was a put-on and that these were in fact originals. I went ahead and joined the LST at that point.

Was pretty confused for the beginning of the set though!

I can't recall ever seeing/hearing Trey use tapping like that before. I know he does hammer-ons a bit, but this? Just too metal-y for the normal Phish repertoire, or have I missed it?

No he doesn't tap. I wonder if the hollow body of the doc really allows for it.

I spoke to the Trey's Guitar Rig guy at Hampton after he got his walk through and played the 'Doc and all that. He says the action is REALLY high which would make tapping difficult.

But the tapping referred to above is at the end of this song, when Trey is playing the white Strat.

I do remember from the small rooms of the early 90s, Trey used to use the tapping technique a little bit, throwing a couple of bars of tapped notes in while he built a peak in Bowie or Possum or whatever ripper they were jamming on. Never seemed to happen more than once or twice in a show, and only a few bars, like I said—a tool that got limited use.

I was responding to the question about doing so on the 'Doc.
Reading is a thing, bro.

Does anyone know who wrote the lyrics? It might sound silly but i think theyre the best new lyrics since 2.0.

Finally got a chance to sit down for a proper listen:

Quote

II

Turtle in the Clouds - synthy, ambient opening, always a great sign, prominent Fish ride early on, industrial scape, R2 units, nice Page, trippy low moans underneath, spooky, into...
interesting 50s style group harmony, solid Mike transition lines, Page mixing it up beautifully, Fish vocal at 4:12, Talking Heads vibe, Swedish tribal chants/vocals, Page funk, Trey drops into a sweet line, Page again mixing it up nicely.

Stray Dog - garage band tone by Trey quicky evaporates into a pleasant tune, uplifting key w/ a Kill Devil Falls vibe, a Little Feat tribute perhaps?  Mike key switch at 3:00 matching Trey's creative stream, chordal intro reprise.  Fun.

Everything is Hollow - heavier riff, more great vocal harmonies, Lay it down, bright white light shining right between my eyes, nice little groove, very Phishy chordal outro, main riff reprise, UK Phish.

We Are Come To Outlive Our Brains - the shapes are hanging over me, psychedelic sheninghans, humor, absurdness, 9 cubes..., I'm a glue in your magnet.  The whole band sounding great, inspired in Trey's outro solo, Fish feeling it vocally, Trey plays a First Tube esque line beginning at 4:33, more funky Trey in the outro, we will come to out live our brains.

Say It To Me SANTOS - loving their attempts and completion of the new, Page funking along nicely keeping it interesting underneath, soundtrack Phish, cool outro Page w/ Trey soloing like a mad man, Stones esque, trilly Trey, channelling Jimi, Page rage on the organ, Trey soling valiantly, NASA tribute band.

The Final Hurrah - nice Fish drum open, cool ascending motif, solid Mike as usual, trippy change, nice keys by Page, first major sample ala Thrilling, sample jam, hip-hop Phish, more funk Page supporting Trey, sample returns, Trey mixing it up nicely, interesting lines by Trey 4:47+, Trey really feeling it, face plant into rock, "you can recycle, the final hurrah...", metal esque Fish/Trey vocal/solo outro, heavy metal esque Trey, yowza!

Play By Play - NICU/Meat hybrid, perception is spoon fed, I open up my mouth, ascending into horizontal lines, industrial outro jam, Mike laying it down, trippy jam ensues, this is one jam style we heard a lot of on this Tour, "freezes time..."  yet another experimental song from this set.  solid tune + jam.  crowd agrees...

Don't Hurt Very Long - death don't hurt very long, nice melodic solo by Trey, 46 Days esque chunk in this one, spooky tune for the weeners!  Nice, thick tone by Trey, ditto for Mike, Mike bending notes on his new bass, busy Fish underneath, an active Fishman is always good.  Very much like a modern Twist jam, patient type 1 group support.  Trey looking to ascend off Page's keys, Mike throbs back in, Page back on the clav, Jimmy Page Trey.  Trey remembering some of his metal lines from The Final Hurrah, low screams by Trey, more trillage into an out of tune axe.

Cool Amber And Mercury - biographical Vermont in the Fall, inspired Trey vocal, soulful, Trey digging in, oh yeah!  Interesting line bridge, just enough to mix this mostly linear song up.  More Final Hurrah sampling, outro vocal chorus into more Trey leads, cool riff by Trey near 4:50, ZZ Top style, Trey emanating various shades of blue despite a white appearence.  Yet another goody.

Passing Through - last song of the set!, wayo wayox2, nice lines by Mike, love the vocal mix-up, nice playing after the vocals, Mike taking the melodic reins, Trey growls in, Page on the ivories, steadfast Fish, awesome Mike here, really stands out.  Rock peak Trey to close with a super tight band right along side, triumphant Phish!  wayo, wayo...Hey!

Really enjoyed the set as a whole, Stray Dog, We Are Come To Outlive Our Brains, The Final Hurrah, Play By Play and, Passing Through stand out for me.

Hey RJ.... you got the inside scoop that none of these new ones are Tom lyrics?

They felt like a group effort to me, especially based on the fact that all 4 of them shared singing.... they DEFINITELY were not Trey-heavy-soul-light related lyrics.... which... was nice.

Clearly what helped make the lyrics so great is the conceit behind them, that these are not especially well-translated lyrics from a mysterious mishmash of scandinavian languages. So we end up with all these strangely ungrammatic phrases and odd juxtapositions of ideas and so on. Putting limits like this on one's creativity is a great way to spark something new and interesting.

Putting limits like this on one's creativity is a great way to spark something new and interesting.
excellent point. works for all artforms and i think it absolutely workd in this case... Though still some of those lyrics are weird enough to be Toms that if not my money's on Fish having a heavy hand in them.

Hey RJ.... you got the inside scoop that none of these new ones are Tom lyrics?

They felt like a group effort to me, especially based on the fact that all 4 of them shared singing.... they DEFINITELY were not Trey-heavy-soul-light related lyrics.... which... was nice.

So - I was talking with a pt today about getting an implantable defibrillator. They asked if the shock hurt, I said yes, and seemed to be appalled / concerned. So I said, discussing the alternative if they chose not to get the defibrillator, if it's pain you're worried about, then "death don't hurt very long"

I'm so on board with these songs. Literally, all ten of them.  Never have I fully embraced a group of new tunes like these since..... Farmhouse.

I can't get " We are Come to Outlive our Brains" out of my head for the life of me. Stray dog is gonna be the new mixolydian rocker. Play by Play has huge dark jam potential and the song itself reminds me of the Talking Heads. Cool amber and Mercury is gonna groove for days. Passing Through will cover the same ground that CDT and Kill Devil Falls has... Death Don't Hurt Very Long is gonna go deep as fuck. Dirty and grimey. Turtle in a the Clouds captured us from its first notes. That shit is gonna get groovey. I'm very interested to hear Trey actually play guitar during the initial sections of that song. And last but surely not least. M'f'n SANTOS. If I had to pick a favorite, I think this is it. This is what space smells like. Enough said.

Truer words were never spoken. I listen to this set ALL THE TIME now. It's the first thing I've burned to CD for my car in awhile. I usually just plug in my phone, but for this one I wanted it to always be in there and ready to go.

And the CD is, of course, simply labeled "Kasvot Vaxt  'i rokk'" with the appropriate accent marks.
