Title: Jimi Hendrix Thread
Post by: susep on September 30, 2006, 06:32:32 PM
Welcome to the thread dedicated to the genius of the electric guitar, James Marshal Hendrix.  To help launch this thread I compiled a "box-file"(zip) of the best of Jimi's Band of Gypsys  famed Fillmore East concerts.  Enjoy!

Liberated Living Legend bootleg
Songs put in the right order
Excellent stereo soundboard denoised

1. Introduction by Jimmy Rabbit / Tax Free
2. Foxy Lady
3. Red House
4. Spanish Castle Magic
5. Star Spangled Banner
6. Purple Haze
7. I Don't Live Today
8. Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) / Sunshine Of Your Love

Jimi Hendrix - guitar, vocals
Noel Redding - bass
Mitch Mitchell - drums

Recorded by Abe Jacob for Wally Heider's Recording Mobile

I couldn't help but think about the  :syf: playing half-way across the continent in Chicago, IL. on the same night:

04-26-69 Electric Theater, Chicago, Il. (Sat)
1: Dupree's> Mountains Of The Moon> China Cat> Doin That Rag, Hurts Me Too> Hard To Handle, Cryptical> Other One> The Eleven Jam> Other One> It's A Sin, Morning Dew, Top Of The World, Minglewood, Silver Threads, Baby Blue, St. Stephen> Lovelight E: Viola Lee Blues> Feedback> We Bid You Goodnight
"Viola Lee Blues" appears on "Fallout From The Phil Zone" - "What's Become Of The Baby" was not performed by the Dead on this night; the studio version was played over the PA while the band performed "Feedback"

A Dick's Pick show also.
Seeing both bands in their early prime back in the day must have been  :-o  Hendrix and the Dead, ironically both signed by Warner Brothers, led the psychadelic jam scene.

I think its important to note the many similarities between Garcia and Hendrix.  Both were born in the early 40's, both grew up listening to blues and, both came from broken homes(whatever that means).  As a result both had short stints in the U.S. Army as a means to do "something" before focusing on music solely.  Both men came from the West coast w/ pioneering vaudeville/performance roots> interesting that both were true sonic explorers

edit> musically speaking, the main difference between Hendrix and Garcia is modality, Hendrix preferring minor modes as a true delta bluesmaster and Garcia, using more majors as derived from his early days as a hot bluegrass picker.

I really like that pic from the Yale show that you are using as your avatar....I also have some sweet Hendrix that I will upload when I have a second....Do you have all of that  Fillmore East show?  I think I do, six discs (maybe 5?)....it's chronic...The complete woodstock might be my fave though....Even though I go in waves, for the most part I can't get enough Hendrix....good thread....I love the smell of acid in the morning  :-P

Thanks, the above link to file was derived from that 6 disc set also.  Similarly I go in Hendrix waves also.  I'm waiting for Lanie Hendrix to digitize the entire Hendrix vault instead of milking it w/ 1 release per year.

She's not even biologically related to Hendrix and was adopted by Al when he married Lanie's mother, a Japanese woman.  Al left her in power whereas Leon, Jimi's full biological brother tried unsuccessfully to retain some "ownership" of his older brothers estate.
I like John McDermott who has written excellent books and essays restoring the truth of Jimi Hendrix after years of mis-direction during the Douglas era of ownership where whole, original tracks were stripped and over-dubbed w/ classical musicians???  Also Eddie Kramer continues to be involved and would most likely lead any digitizing/editing.
At least there are avenues of digitizing available but unfortunately for Exp.Hendrix and others, they ultimately fall behind.

If you ever get to Seattle, check out the Experience Music Project...it's sick.  They have everything, the woodstock strat and amp and tons of other strats and crazy shit.  They also have Are You Experienced hooked up to an 8 channel mixer, and you can mix the album yourself....They have all the effects, all the clothes, so much shit.  I was a little overwhelmed to say the least.....They have a strat hooked up to a fuzzface and univibe and a vox wah and you can sit there and wail (even though it's through headphones....) It's sweet...

well all right then.
a little more love for the genius himself is always nice to see.
how about one of the finest versions of I Don't Live Today?
it's from sweden, 1/9/69, the second show of the night, the first being a total disaster.
they went backstage, um, relaxed a bit, came out and went off.

I'll admit I love the BBC sessions.  One of my favorite shows.  I'm curious, does anybody have any shows where Jimi added the horns?  I've always heard he tried to do the miles thing, but he wasn't allowed to do that.  Anybody have any recordings of this?

I have a track called South Saturn Delta where he applys horns recorded during what was the Electric Ladyland sessions, May 1968.  Its ok, nothing too crazy.  Its actually a comercial release.
When Miles and Hendrix first got together I think there was alot of mutual respect.  The story goes Miles demanded $50K upfront before entering a studio w/ Hendrix.  Miles was not a naive man, any sessions done w/Hendrix and later released commercially would be a stream of cash for both.
Although they never actually recorded "offically", they often hung out and jammed acoustically as described in the recent bio, Room Full of Mirrors.

I thought hendrix hired his own horn players and did a few shows before the record company pulled the plug.

He hired a few percussionists, Jerry Velez and Juma ????? who helped(or hindered) Jimi's first post-Experience project, Gypsy Sun and Rainbows(his Woodstock unit).  I guess Jimi's corrupt manager Michael Jefferys wasn't pleased w/ Jimi's new band and did what he could to destabalize it.
I really think the sound Hendrix was going for w/ additional percussion was Santana's.

Before the arrival of Jimi's signature 1970 flamenco influenced Hey Baby, embryonic versions recorded previously shed light on the songs beautiful evolution.

One example is this New Rising Sun  that was recorded at LA's TTG studios on 23Oct.68(the 2 year anniv. of Jimi's first recording session w/ Chas Chandler):

great run along side the  :syf: who were playing a similar run at the Avalon Ballroom.  Hendrix and the  :syf: were supposed to meet up for a jam on a rented boat but Hendrix failed to show up.  Apparently undeterred he reappeared at the  :syf:'s show the next night hoping to sit in.  At the set break they all agreed Hendrix would come out and jam at the appropriate cue.  The  :syf: played their set w/ out inviting him onstage as a payback to him standing them up the previous night.

Today was the last of an exquisite Hendrix photo exhibition in Rotterdam. Amazing stuff and I finally got to see some pix taken at his legendary Dutch live show.

Making my way back to station I picked up Live at Berkeley (may 30, 1970 second show) for 1O EUR at one of my favorite record shops. ""Thought you would like that, so I set it aside for you", the owner smiled.

Tue. 16Nov. new release date of Jimi's newest box set:
QuoteThe long-awaited career-spanning box set tracks Hendrix's remarkable journey from little known R&B sideman to international stardom through an unprecedented assemblage of previously unavailable recordings.  West Coast Seattle Boy - The Jimi Hendrix Anthology is not a collection of existing Jimi Hendrix albums but instead 45 unreleased Jimi Hendrix live and studio recordings including demos and alternate versions of songs from Are You Experienced, Axis: Bold As Love, and Electric Ladyland. West Coast Seattle Boy includes Hendrix's never before heard version of Bob Dylan's "Tears Of Rage," solo acoustic recordings of Electric Ladyland favorites like "Long Hot Summer Night" and "1983 (A Merman I Shall Turn To Be)" as well as never before heard live performances from Berkeley and the legendary Band Of Gypsys Fillmore East concert on New Year's Eve 1969 combined together with such new Hendrix songs as "Hear My Freedom," "Hound Dog Blues," "Lonely Avenue" and more.

A centerpiece achievement in Legacy Recordings' monumental Jimi Hendrix catalog project, West Coast Seattle Boy - The Jimi Hendrix Anthology is the first Hendrix collection to bring fans access to a comprehensive treasure trove of  fresh material -- including demos, alternate takes, live concert jewels and more -- from all phases of the artist's recording career (1964 -1970).

West Coast Seattle Boy - The Jimi Hendrix Anthology offers the most complete collection of Jimi's pre-Experience R&B performances (including his singles with the Isley Brothers, Little Richard, Don Covay, King Curtis and more) to ever be officially anthologized, while bringing together the most comprehensive and revelatory set of fully realized songs, never before heard live performances, alternate studio takes, acoustic and electric demos, and other rarities drawn from every chapter of Jimi Hendrix's remarkable life and career.

The newly curated and assembled West Coast Seattle Boy - The Jimi Hendrix Anthology includes Jimi Hendrix Voodoo Child, a new 90 minute documentary directed by the multiple Grammy award winning Bob Smeaton (Beatles Anthology, Festival Express, Beatles: The Studio Recordings, Band of Gypsys).  An autobiographical journey told in the legendary musician's own words as read by Parliament-Funkadelic's Bootsy Collins, the film incorporates interviews with Hendrix, coupled with the artist's letters, writings and recordings to provide new insight into one of the most enduring icons of popular culture.  The documentary features some of Jimi's greatest performances as well as rare and never before seen footage and photos including--for the first time ever--examples from the Hendrix family archive of the late guitarist's personal drawings, postcards home to his father, song drafts, sketches, and lyrics.

"Who better to tell the incredible story of a man's life than the man himself? Jimi was amazing and only his music, with tones and textures that he conjured, can capture the colorful and expansive essence of his time here on earth.  I am enthralled with this all-encompassing new anthology which not only illuminates his years on both sides of the Atlantic and beautifully reveals his versatility as a performer, from his R&B origins to his explosion on the pop culture scene, but highlights who he was for those who knew and loved him," said Janie Hendrix, President and CEO of Experience Hendrix and co-producer of West Coast Seattle Boy - The Jimi Hendrix Anthology. "This vast exploration of my brother's musical and life experiences leaves no stone unturned and is sure to broaden our understanding of who Jimi really was, not only as a legendary musician, but also as a timeless messenger of love."

"Jimi Hendrix changed the world with his music and West Coast Seattle Boy - The Jimi Hendrix Anthology honors that achievement with an unprecedented collection of rarities and never-before-heard tracks from the Hendrix vaults that show the breadth and depth of this extraordinary artist," said Adam Block, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Legacy Recordings.  "West Coast Seattle Boy - The Jimi Hendrix Anthology is a comprehensive overview of Hendrix's career told through fresh materials and provides remarkable new insights into one of music's greatest geniuses."

An essential and historic addition to the Jimi Hendrix catalog, West Coast Seattle Boy - The Jimi Hendrix Anthology brings together, for the first time, many of Hendrix's earliest commercial recordings, providing a rare glimpse of the rising rock guitar hero through a series of stellar sideman performances on a set of highly collectible pre-Experience R&B singles.  Included on Disc One of West Coast Seattle Boy are:

1. Isley Brothers - Testify (1964)

2. Don Covay & the Goodtimers - Mercy, Mercy (1964 - #1 Cashbox R&B - #35 Billboard Hot 100)

Disc one[2]

No.    Title    Length
1.    "Testify" (Isley Brothers)    4:09
2.    "Mercy, Mercy" (Don Covay & the Goodtimers)    2:26
3.    "Can't Stay Away" (Don Covay & the Goodtimers)    2:50
4.    "My Diary" (Rosa Lee Brooks)    2:22
5.    "Utee" (Rosa Lee Brooks)    1:58
6.    "I Don't Know What You Got But It's Got Me" (Little Richard)    4:02
7.    "Dancing All Around The World" (Little Richard)    3:00
8.    "I'm So Glad" (Frank Howard & The Commanders)    2:39
9.    "Move Over And Let Me Dance" (Isley Brothers)    2:41 - showcases Jimi's early Curtis Mayfield style rythym playing, his playing here reminds of the LP Axis.
10.    "Have You Ever Been Disappointed" (Isley Brothers)    6:19 - nice mellow tune w/ Jimi supporting underneath.
11.    "Help Me (Get The Feeling) (Part I)" (Ray Sharpe)    2:33 - carbon copy of Them's(Van Morrison) Gloria.
12.    "(My Girl) She's A Fox" (The Icemen)    2:43 - Electric Ladyland esque, a lot of these early tracks featured a heavily reverbed Hendrix w/ some kind of watery effect.
13.    "That Little Old Groovemaker" (Jimmy Norman)    2:16 - AYE? style Jimi, static funk rythym,
14.    "Sweet Thang" (Billy Lamont)    2:33 - reminds of Band of Gypsys,
15.    "Instant Groove" (King Curtis) - another Gloria clone, no wonder Hendrix lit up Gloria at TTG Oct.1968

Disc two

No.    Title    Length
1.    "Fire" - nice mix,
2.    "Are You Experienced - basic track, guitar solo at 2:13, slight arabian motiffs.
3.    "May This Be Love" - nice mix, a favorite of mine in Jimi's catalog, his rythym playing in this is great w/ a surreal major key solo,

4.    "Can You See Me" (*)    x
5.    "The Wind Cries Mary"      x
6.    "Love Or Confusion" - I like this version because of the prominent drone/feedback on the left side, I'm a big fan of the BBC version, this version takes it,
7.    "Little One" - gypsy Hendrix, sounds like music you might here on a gypsy caravan, like a large majority of groups in the UK during that late 60's musicians sought sitar influenced music.

8.    "Mr. Bad Luck" (*)    x
9.    "Cat Talking To Me" - similar to 51st Anniv., Beatles influence, Hendrix could have taken this way out live.
10.    "Castles Made Of Sand" - kind of sloppy backing track, I like this tune over Little Wing,
11.    "Tears Of Rage" - Paul Caruso on harmonica?,
12.    "Hear My Train A Comin'" - same session?, funk arrangement,

13.    "1983 (A Merman I Shall Turn To Be)" (**)    x
14.    "Long Hot Summer Night" - 3rd variation I've heard of this tune, this version suits the song well.
15.    "My Friend"      x
16.    "Angel" - sounds like the Lifelines version, I prefer this version over the Summer 1970 Electric Ladyland studios version,
17.    "Calling All The Devil's Children" (**)    x
18.    "Hey Baby (New Rising Sun)" - first heard on Voodoo Soup although I think this is the complete, unedited take, I've read in Jimi Hendrix Sessions descriptions of a few outstanding jams from these Oct. '68 TTG sessions but have yet to hear them

Disc Three

   1. Hear My Freedom (1968) -  heavy Organ, Noel on bass?
   2. Room Full Of Mirrors (1969) - 3rd or 4th arrangement I've heard of this tune,
   3. Shame, Shame, Shame (1969) - similar vibe to the previous Room, minimal variation,
   4. Messenger (1968) - sounds like a run of chords I've heard Hendrix infuse into jams such as '69 versions of Spanish Castle Magic,
   5. Hound Dog Blues (1969) - yawn
   6. Untitled Basic Track (1968) -
   7. Star Spangled Banner (1969) -
   8. Purple Haze (1969) - These were mixes by Eddie Karmer but never applied to a commercial release until now, culled from the JHE legendary 26April1969 LA Forum performance( the whole show smokes!) these tracks burn.

   9. Young/Hendrix (1969) - listen to Hendrix trill near 10:10, fairly uneventful overall last 4-5 minutes highlight
  10. Mastermind (1969) - love the vibe of this tune, definitely upstate Gypsy vibe, Larry Lee on vocals, great performance here, Hendrix sounds solid accompanying, nice percussion w/ Larry Velez and Juma Sultan, Motown Soul,
  11. Message To Love (1969) -
  12. Fire (1969) - I like the Gypsys more when they played their own sauce
  13. Foxey Lady (1969) - dirty,

Disc 4

1. Stone Free (1969) - Sunshine of Your Love Jam,
2. Burning Desire (1970) - butter, great tone in the studio,
3. Lonely Avenue (1969) - Juma on percussion?,

4. Everlasting First (1970) -
5. Freedom (1970) - I have this track already, nice to hear a remastered version
6. Peter Gunn/Catastrophe (1970) -
7. In From The Storm (1970) -
8. All God's Children (1970) - nice changes, new.
9. Red House (1970) - 30May1970
10. Play That Riff [Thank You] (1970) -
11. Bolero (1970) - another series that appeared in some of his jams for ex. in the Woodstock medley jam post SSB
12. Hey Baby (New Rising Sun) - Leslie effect,
13. Suddenly November Morning (1970) - Jimi on acoustic, similar to Scorpio Woman (Morning Symphony Ideas), nice swan song for the box

Overall at first I wasn't that impressed w/ this box but the more I listen the more I like.  When you combine these tracks w/ the box from 2000 you really have a great posthumous overview of Jimi.

he used the V primarily for blues #s ala Red House although in the Isle of Wight vid I he's playing a V for Dolly Dagger and other tunes.  I really dig the Strat the best specifically those w/ maple necks as opposed to the rosewood necks.

Question:

Has anyone ever heard a recording of Jimi's 4/5/68 show in Newark — the day after MKL died? Legend has it there was a very beautiful improv opener to a show 1 set show.

I'm preety sure an Aud. recording doesn't exist although I could be wrong.  I read the same thing that they(The Experience) abandoned their typical '68 style setlist and Hendrix stepped to the mic and said "This number is for a friend of mine..."

Quote
It was very short, as far as I can recall, probably about 45 minutes.  There had been a lot of rioting going on.  It was more of a jam as far as I can recollect, than one of our proper shows.  We basically played a load of blues for 45 minutes, then we went straight to New Your

Noel Redding on 5April1968

edit - the riots inspired Jimi's House Burning Down off EL.

look for a new release/feature w/ this show both audio and visual/dvd sometime in 2011, not sure which quarter?

edit - this show is packed w/ win, killer Stone Free, nice Hear My Train A' Comin', IDLT is a unique version(like most of his live stuff), Bleeding Heart is a beautiful blues performance, his strat sounds amazing in this #, rare Little Wing that ended up on Hendrix In The West and some peoples all-time favorite Voodoo Child.  Should be a great release.

Another Hendrix boot has been freed and is now up at LL. I believe you've all heard this show (LA Forum 4-26-69) as the 4th disc of the Lifelines release has a few of the tracks or another source that did the rounds, or at minimum the official release from the night before or after (can't remember which, too tired to google). This is a different/more complete source and has not been seeded before. YOU NEED THIS:

And to conclude, you may of heard some of the tracks if you purchased the Lifelines: The Jimi Hendrix Story Box set. The fourth disc was culled from the performance OF THIS SOURCE.

indeed, my first Jimi box was Lifelines, my high school gf bought it for me back in the day on cassette.  I love the '69 LA Forum concert, the '70 Cry of Love is preety hot too.  Interesting little side story about this show(26April1969), 24May1969 and 24Feb.1969(Royal Albert Hall).  According to my Hendrix book Sessions by John McDermott, Eddie Kramer was hired and dispatched to Los Angeles in June 1969 to begin preparing live mixes of the 3 aftermentioned shows for a potential live album.  For whatever reason Jefferies/Hendrix et al. decided not to release a Live Hendrix album but instead decided to release the compilation album Smash Hits.  The Star Spangled Banner > Purple Haze from 26April, the original Eddie Kramer mixes from those June '69 mix sessions are on the recent Hendrix box West Coast Seattle Boy.

Check your sources tracks. I think the big difference is that this one is the most complete source. The one's you have might have similar sound, but may not be complete. This has the Foxy Lady....and it sounds very different to the release.

the version i have is a bootleg CD from '93, pressed in italy by Red Line. it contains the whole show, but...

this version you put up sounds a lot better. nice!
also different, my version places I Don't Live Today as track 3.

I know, I have LIfelines and I remember piecing together the show with the missing foxy years ago...  The missing foxy is on Concerts methinks...  But year, one is Alan Douglas and the other is Eddie Kramer, so very diff sound...  There are also the various boots...

I have this one:

After a thorough listen, the major difference between the Lifelines box set 4th disc release and this particular boot, is the boot's distortion in the high end, especially the cymbals, however the recording is a little thin. In this department, the boot definitely has a lot more kick in the lower end. A lot more. In fact its bass and toms sound very "audy". The vocals are a lot more upfront on the boot. I'd be interested to hear what this would sound like as a matrix. Probably slop, but regardless, the release is definitely not a candidate for engineer of the year award. Sorry Kramer.

I'm preety sure Eddie Kramer didn't mix the LA Forum Lifelines version(although I could be wrong), does it say in the linear?  It was selected tracks ala the Star Spangled Banner > Purple Haze and I Don't Live Today that EK mixed originally in June 1969.  I'm almost certain EK did not work for Alan Douglas who helped produce Lifelines later on in the late 80's.

Quote
By Pete Townshend Posted Aug 27, 2003

I feel sad for people who have to judge Jimi Hendrix on the basis of recordings and film alone, because in the flesh he was so extraordinary. He had a kind of alchemist's ability; when he was on the stage, he changed. He physically changed. He became incredibly graceful and beautiful. It wasn't just people taking LSD, though that was going on, there's no question. But he had a power that almost sobered you up if you were on an acid trip. He was bigger than LSD.

What he played was fucking loud but also incredibly lyrical and expert. He managed to build this bridge between true blues guitar -- the kind that Eric Clapton had been battling with for years and years -- and modern sounds, the kind of Syd Barrett-meets-Townshend sound, the wall of screaming guitar sound that U2 popularized. He brought the two together brilliantly. And it was supported by a visual magic that obviously you won't get if you just listen to the music. He did this thing where he would play a chord, and then he would sweep his left hand through the air in a curve, and it would almost take you away from the idea that there was a guitar player here and that the music was actually coming out of the end of his fingers. And then people say, "Well, you were obviously on drugs." But I wasn't, and I wasn't drunk, either. I can just remember being taken over by this, and the images he was producing or evoking were naturally psychedelic in tone because we were surrounded by psychedelic graphics. All of the images that were around us at the time had this kind of echoey, acidy quality to them. The lighting in all the clubs was psychedelic and drippy.

He was dusty -- he had cobwebs and dust all over him. He was a very unremarkable-looking guy with an old military jacket on that was pretty dirty. It looked like he'd maybe slept in it a few nights running. When he would walk toward the stage, nobody would really take much notice of him. But when he walked off, I saw him walk up to some of the most covetable women in the world. Hendrix would snap his fingers, and they followed him. Onstage, he was very erotic as well. To a man watching, he was erotic like Mick Jagger is erotic. It wasn't "You know, I'd like to take that guy in the bathroom and fuck him." It was a high form of eroticism, almost spiritual in quality. There was a sense of wanting to possess him and wanting to be a part of him, to know how he did what he did because he was so powerfully affecting. Johnny Rotten did it, Kurt Cobain did it. As a man, you wanted to be a part of Johnny Rotten's gang, you wanted to be a part of Kurt Cobain's gang.

He was shy and kind and sweet, and he was fucked up and insecure. If you were as lucky as I was, you'd spend a few hours with him after a gig and watch him descend out of this incredibly colorful, energized face. There was also something quite sad about watching him. There was a hedonism about him. Toward the end of his life, he seemed to be having fun, but maybe a little bit too much. It was happening to a lot of people, but it was sad to see it happen to him.

With Jimi, I didn't have any envy. I never had any sense that I could ever come close. I remember feeling quite sorry for Eric, who thought that he might actually be able to emulate Jimi. I also felt sorry that he should think that he needed to. Because I thought Eric was wonderful anyway. Perhaps I make assumptions here that I shouldn't, but it's true. Once -- I think it was at a gig Jimi played at the Scotch of St. James [in London] -- Eric and I found ourselves holding each other's hands. You know, what we were watching was so profoundly powerful.

The third or fourth time that I saw him, he was supporting the Who at the Saville Theatre. That was the first time I saw him set his guitar on fire. It didn't do very much. He poured lighter fluid over the guitar and set fire to it, and then the next day he would be playing with a guitar that was a little bit charred. In fact, I remember teasing him, saying, "That's not good enough -- you need a proper flame-thrower, it needs to be completely destroyed." We started getting into an argument about destroying your guitar -- if you're going to do it, you have to do it properly. You have to break every little piece of the guitar, and then you have to give it away so it can't be rebuilt. Only that is proper breaking your guitar. He was looking at me like I was fucking mad.

Trying to work out how he affected me at my ground zero, the fact is that I felt like I was robbed. I felt the Who were in some ways quite a silly little group, that they were indeed my art-school installation. They were constructed ideas and images and some cool little pop songs. Some of the music was good, but a lot of what the Who did was very tongue-in-cheek, or we reserved the right to pretend it was tongue-in-cheek if the audience laughed at it. The Who would always look like we didn't really mean it, like it didn't really matter. You know, you smash a guitar, you walk off and go, "Fuck it all. It's all a load of tripe anyway." That really was the beginning of that punk consciousness. And Jimi arrived with proper music.

He made the electric guitar beautiful. It had always been dangerous, it had always been able to evoke anger. If you go right back to the beginning of it, John Lee Hooker shoving a microphone into his guitar back in the 1940s, it made his guitar sound angry, impetuous, and dangerous. The guitar players who worked through the Fifties and with the early rock artists - James Burton, who worked with Ricky Nelson and the Everly Brothers, Steve Cropper with Booker T. -- these Nashville-influenced players had a steely, flick-knife sound, really kind of spiky compared to the beautiful sound of the six-string acoustic being played in the background. In those great early Elvis songs, you hear Elvis himself playing guitar on songs like "Hound Dog," and then you hear an electric guitar come in, and it's not a pleasant sound. Early blues players, too -- Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Albert King -- they did it to hurt your ears. Jimi made it beautiful and made it OK to make it beautiful.

One of my favorite Jimi Hendrix sets, the debut of the Band of Gypsys, 31Dec.1969.  Enjoy!

Quote
BAND OF GYPSYS - Box of Gypsys Vol.1 - Revised (Rev.A: ATM 066/218/219/069/070/071)

The Complete Live recordings by the Band Of Gypsys compiled from the best available sources on 6CD's. This
revised version of ATM 066-071 "Box of Gypsys" incorporates approx. 9 min's of additional material from
Fillmore East, New York City, NY 31.12.69; The revision only concerns Discs 2 & 3, and this set is in effect
just the original "Box of Gypsys" set with Discs 2 & 3 replaced by ATM 218-219 "Band of Gypsys: Goodbye to '69".
If you already have the original set, you just need to replace these 2 discs in order to upgrade to the revised
version.

Extraordinary Archives Traded Material series of the highest quality Hendrix recordings available in traders' circuits.

All recordings in the ATM series are taken from the lowest generation masters available, and they have all been
digitally restored unless otherwise indicated.

Thanks to Hans-Peter Johnsen

One of my favorites as well. By the way, are we turning this into a live download Jimi thread? Cause I have a lot of live Jimi that I could share.

At quick glance: 66,69,70,71. I might of deleted the ATM from the folder title in a mass organizing effort awhile back, so not all are coming up in my folder title search. Also, I'm a perfectionist not a completist, meaning if the quality is poor I toss it. I have too much music and too little time to listen to poor quality.

LOL, well I did keep his last ever performance which was recorded with a simple tape recorder that sat on a table in the bar (in Stockholm I think). I also have this unbelievable black and white television proshot from somewhere in sweden that IS WITHOUT QUESTION THE BEST JIMI VID OUT THERE.

do you have that black and white vid I mentioned above? Stockholm 01-09-69. You're not a true Hendrix fan without it. Sort of like Veneta '72.

and are we allowed upping direct links for Hendrix? What's the ruling behind that? Not sure if it is allowed.

I'm preety sure everything is free game excluding officially Hendrix releases from Experience Hendrix LLC.  I do have that Stockholm vid, too bad they didn't film the second show, a much better show imo.

supposedly she had an affair w/ Jimi behind Miles back.  surprised no one has commented on Bridget Bardot but in Cross's bio he writes that in Aug 1969 after Jimi's 10 day vacation in Morocco, Jimi spies Bardot at a Paris airport, introduces himself, skips his flight and beds Bardot over a 3 day period arriving back in the U.S. literally days before Woodstock.

although Jimi had written The Wind Cries Mary after a row w/ his gf Kathy Mary Etchingham, he told Marianne Faithful he had written it for her while trying to talk her out of leaving Jagger.  Speaking of the Stones, it was Keith Richards gf Linda Keith who introduced Jimi to acid and subsequently introduced him to Chas Chandler.  Jagger re-appeared in Jimi's 1970 tune Dolly Dagger which featured the line, "she drinks the blood from a jagged edge" inspired by Jimi's then on/off gf Devon Wilson who in full view of Hendrix at his birthday party, knelt down and sucked the blood of Jagger after he cut his finger at the party.  :hereitisyousentimentalbastard

Another live Hendrix gem, this set burns and is arguably one of Jimi's all-time best performances: first show 30May1970 Berkeley Community Theatre, Berkely CA.

Jimi Hendrix
(bootleg CD) Hendrix - Berkeley Concert, 1995 Audifön Emir Deutschland
Lifted from a soundboard Recording (intro by Bill Graham is missing, not all songs complete, CD=78 minutes)
Star Spangled Banner and Purple Haze were missing in the first place
Tracks:
Fire
Johnny B Goode
Hear My Train A Comin
Foxy Lady (incomplete)
Machine Gun
Freedom (incomplete)
Red House
Message To Love
Ezy Ryder
The Star Spangled Banner
Purple Haze
- ATM 175-176 Stereo Aud
Voodoo Child (Slight Return)

http://www.sendspace.com/file/78ysx2 (http://www.sendspace.com/file/78ysx2) - jh 700530 first show - Berkeley Community Theatre, Berkeley CA.mp3
Size: 193.80MB |

edit - great quality, the Star Spangled Banner > Purple Haze was missing so I used the Aud version from ATM 175-176 to create a seamless listen.

Enjoy!

Thanks. I have the second show which was released by Experience Hendrix in 2003.

yes I have that set as well, I'm hoping EH releases the first set as well.  I heard their next planned release is Royal Albert Hall from Feb.1969 both audio and video.  we'll see...

RAH 1969 would be really cool. Would love to see the video.

QuoteHendrix didn't tune his guitar down a half step as he usually did at all other shows and on most of his albums. Instead, he stayed in standard tuning.

interesting little fact,  I know w/ the Band of Gypsys he and Billy were tuned down a whole step to D so Jimi could sing easier.  I heard that EH had finally made it through all of the legal and financial processes in obtaining the original video/stock, supposedly there is a total of 18 hours of footage from both 18-24Feb.1969 RAH shows w/ additional footage covering dates from their earlier Jan.1969 European tour, RAH Soundcheck footage, various backstage and footage from Jimi's Apartment.  I heard one rumor that they are planning on having the movie be a full theatre release ala Isle of Wight in some select cities.  24Feb.1969 is truly a great show, psyched to hear the remastered, uncut "Stone Free!"

yes but the original master reels w/ out the editing.  I have this version also, EH/rumors are saying the new version will be of kick-ass quality.  This one definitely gives us a nice preview of what we'll see in that even during some of the songs on this Room Full Of Hendrix - 4Reel Productions version, they pan into scenes of Hendrix walking w/ some hotty to his limo on his way to the airport or RAH and him hosting friends post-show.

Andre makes a convincing Jmi, and he's certainaly weird enough to pull it off. That should be a good flick.

On a side note, here's an artists rendering of what Jimi would look like if he were still alive.

I would take the Woodstock(which was played 46 years ago this am) or Berkeley versions any day over 'lanta.  Pretty psyched for the LP release of Jimi's 'lanta set, due out on 28Aug.  Really dig the SCM, Stone Free, Straight Ahead et al.  I too have the Stages set on disc, psyched for a more complete release although I read they left off Hey Baby because it was a poor performance.
Personally I'd rather see the concert footage un-edited with interviews and special features as bonus highlights.

something about the concision of the atlanta version really gets me, plus the series of notes he hits at the very end of the song leading into the transition does something to my brain i can't explain.

something about the concision of the atlanta version really gets me, plus the series of notes he hits at the very end of the song leading into the transition does something to my brain i can't explain.

nice will def check it out.  I did see a snippet of the vid while he's playing it, he looks over his shoulder to see the fireworks exploding above.

Not bad, not great as a show. B of B-.
Sounds pretty good. Beware of an audio shift in All Along the Watchtower - they had to use the camera crew's audio for the first bit (the multitrack kicked in a bit too late).
My pre-ordered vinyl wasn't in the shop yet.

picked up a vinyl copy, listened last night.  impressed!  nice transformation from the previous Stages version.  much better mix with 16 out of the 17 tracks played whereas Stages omitted 6 tracks.  I do like the Stages essay better, the new release has many new, great pics that are fun to look at.
Hear My Train A Comin' is a superb version, very trippy and well played.  I wasn't a fan of this cut on Stages however with the Eddie Kramer re-mix, its reborn.
The whole show rocks.

Quote
About Hendrix
Jimi Hendrix at 23 Brook Street

Jimi Hendrix in his 23 Brook Street flat © Barrie Wentzell

Brought to London by manager Chas Chandler in September 1966, Jimi Hendrix quickly established a reputation as a spectacular live performer, based on an intensive period of playing in London clubs, as well as venues across the UK, often delivering more than one set per night. The success of his first two single releases, Hey Joe (December 1966) and Purple Haze (March 1967), and his first album with the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Are You Experienced? (May 1967), coupled with the reputation established by his UK shows, led to fame; ensuring that when he returned to play shows in the USA, only nine months after he had arrived in London, he was already a European star.

After spending much of 1968 recording and touring in the USA, Hendrix returned to London, moving into an upstairs flat in 23 Brook Street which his then girlfriend Kathy Etchingham had rented for them that summer.

Kathy had completely furnished the flat with their joint possessions and new purchases, including curtains and carpets from John Lewis on Oxford Street.

For Hendrix, Brook Street was the doorstep to the London music scene of the late 60s.

For the next three months Hendrix used the flat as his base, giving interviews there, writing new songs, and preparing for his February concerts at the Royal Albert Hall. On learning that Handel used to live next door he went with Kathy to the One Stop Record Shop in South Molton Street and bought some classical albums – including Handel's Messiah and Water Music.

For Hendrix, Brook Street was the doorstep to the London music scene of the late 60s. His flat was a short stroll from legendary venues like the Marquee, the Speakeasy and The Scotch of St James and he would spend many evenings wandering from club to club looking for a chance to play.

On 14 September 1997, 23 Brook Street was chosen for an English Heritage Blue Plaque commemorating his life and work. It is the only officially recognised Hendrix residence in the world.

Handel House opened in November 2001 and the Hendrix Flat is due to open on Wednesday 10 February 2016.

Surprised Mopper hasn't posted this one yet.  Either way nice tribute to the 50th Anniversary of Electric Ladyland:

https://www.jimihendrix.com/electric-ladyland-50/

Quote

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the release of the Jimi Hendrix Experience masterpiece Electric Ladyland, Experience Hendrix, L.L.C. and Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, are releasing the Deluxe Edition box set on November 9. Available as either a 3CD/1 Blu-ray set or a 6LP/1 Blu-ray set, both packages include the original double album, now newly remastered by Bernie Grundman from the original analog tapes. For the LP set, Grundman prepared an all analog direct to disc vinyl transfer of the album, preserving the authenticity. Also included is Electric Ladyland: The Early Takes, which presents demos and studio outtakes from this period in Hendrix's career, plus a new 5.1 surround sound mix of the entire original album by Hendrix's original engineer Eddie Kramer. This marks the first and only time this has been done with a Hendrix studio album, and gives listeners the original stereo mixes in uncompressed 24 bit/96 kz high resolution audio.

Jimi Hendrix Experience: Live At the Hollywood Bowl 9/14/68, part of Experience Hendrix's Dagger Records official bootleg series, is another exclusive component. The never before released recording captures the band and the mounting excitement that took place just weeks before the release of Electric Ladyland. The Blu-ray also includes the acclaimed, feature length documentary At Last... The Beginning: The Making of Electric Ladyland.

Lastly, Electric Ladyland Deluxe Edition includes a full color, 48-page book containing Jimi's handwritten lyrics, poem and instructions to his record label, as well as never before published photos from the recording sessions that were shot by Eddie Kramer himself.

Pretty sweet show, lots of great music and amusing banter from Jimi and Noel.

MY inner completist made me order this.

https://www.roughtrade.com/gb/music/jimi-hendrix-experience-live-in-europe

QuoteThe first incarnation of the Experience was at the top of their game in mid '67. These four beautifully recorded tracks were all broadcast in May for German and Swedish TV. For anyone who can understand German, we have included a hilarious German-language preamble as the MC introduces the Jimi Hendrix Experience as 'music for the future with Donovan-like flowery lyrics and free-form performance...with the full recommendation of Frank Sinatra!'. All tracks recorded on 12th May 1967 in Offenbach for TV broadcast in Germany, except one track on a TV broadcast, Stockholm, 24th May 1967.

Also: cranking that 5.1 Electric Ladyland.

In honor of the recent 50 year Anniversary of Jimi's January 1969 European Tour, I made a playlist to celebrate.  Caveat, these are audience recordings ranging from G through VG+.  In most cases the circulating shows contain at least 2 sometimes 3 sources.  I tried to pick what I thought sounded like the best source available for each track.  Enjoy.

The clips look amazing compared to the circulating boot version.  Stone Free from RAH and the Gypsys box(01/01/70 set II) are great examples of Jimi's improvisational prowess.

Exp Hendrix LLC still haven't released 05/24/69 San Diego and 04/26/69 LA Forum.  Still lots of good Jimi forthcoming.

Ordered the Fillmore box set just now (5CD). As much I want to support my local record stores they will be selling it for 78,99 or even 98,99 euros. And Amazon Germany offers it for 54,99. Free shipping.

Ordered a bunch of stuff for a friend's birthday thru authentichendrix.com (https://www.authentichendrix.com/). Fingers crossed that things don't go sideways, because their orders are handled by musictoday.com (https://www.musictoday.com/) and I've run into tons of fail with that outfit in the past.

Tons of radio broadcasts are being released due to a copyright loophole in Europe, so yeah, why not release the Stockholm shows again.

Listening now. Separation is quite good. And it was dirt cheap too.

Added it to Discogs (https://www.discogs.com/The-Jimi-Hendrix-Experience-Live-In-Sweden-1969/release/14859465) as well.

An early Jimi bootleg for me.  First read about the show in Electric Gypsy.  If only the whole January tour was recorded via soundboard.  Its funny when Jimi says they hadn't played in six weeks but played Gothenberg the night before?

To be fair, their last big gig was 12/01/68 however they did play Lulu's show @ the BBC on 01/04/69 before their opening night of the tour, 01/08/69.
Actually listened to both shows here, 01/09/69 last night and today.  Love Jimi and Noel's banter in both shows.  The late show is definitely the better of the two however the early show too has some tasty highlights.

The Hendrix Estate is peddling more PPX stuff.

No Business: Curtis Knight & The Squires
The PPX Sessions, Volume 2

QuoteNo Business: The PPX Sessions Volume 2 by Curtis Knight & The Squires is the follow-up to Experience Hendrix/Legacy Recordings' 2015 collection You Can't Use My Name.  The forthcoming release includes October 1965 demo recordings made by the then-unknown Jimi Hendrix, as well as 1967 studio recordings with Hendrix when he was in the midst of his meteoric ascent to stardom. Dagger was founded by Experience Hendrix, L.L.C. over two decades ago as an official 'bootleg' label to provide Hendrix fans throughout the world with additional live performances, home demos and studio recordings.

This title is also available as a limited edition, 12-track, Record Store Day exclusive release pressed on 150g, brown vinyl.

Jimi Hendrix was based in Harlem in 1965, working intermittently as an itinerant sideman when he met Curtis Knight in a hotel lobby.  Knight invited Hendrix to record with him, booking time at Studio 76, a Manhattan facility run by producer Ed Chalpin.  Hendrix joined Knight to record nine demos (tracks 11-19) on or about October 15, 1965.   These demos provide a window into the formation of Hendrix's creative evolution.  "Two Little Birds" and "Suddenly" presage his playing on future classics, such as  "Little Wing" and "Castles Made of Sand," while "Working All Day" and "Taking Care Of No Business," hold the distinction of being the first known recorded Jimi Hendrix compositions.

After the conclusion of this initial demo session, Hendrix was approached by Chalpin to sign what the guitarist thought was a release for his participation.  What Chalpin actually had Hendrix unknowingly sign was a contract with his own PPX Enterprises Inc. for $1 and a 1% royalty rate.  Hendrix had previously signed an agreement with the Harlem based Sue Records [home to such acts as Ike & Tina Turner) in July 1965 and was unaware that this too was a recording agreement and not a release for a session fee.  Chalpin filed away the agreement and Hendrix continued to lend his guitar to sessions on Knight's behalf in 1965 and the first half of 1966.

After moving to England in September 1966 and forming the Jimi Hendrix Experience under the management of Animals bassist Chas Chandler, Hendrix's sudden popularity in Britain and Europe caught Chalpin's attention.  As Hendrix prepared for his return to the US via the Monterey Pop Festival in June 1967, Chalpin initiated legal proceedings based upon his one page, October 1965 agreement.  Worse still, now that Hendrix was a known commercial commodity, Chalpin was releasing material Hendrix had recorded with Curtis Knight and passing it off as solo material by Jimi. In a failed attempt to placate Chalpin, Hendrix returned to Studio 76 in July and August of 1967 and recorded more music with Curtis Knight with the hopes of being released from his onerous contract. From a business perspective, his plan backfired, but more unique music was created as a result.

In addition to 1966 studio recordings such as "Hornet's Nest" and "UFO," No Business also features highlights from the July and August 1967 sessions.  Hendrix's wah-wah guitar can be heard on "Hush Now" and "Love, Love" while also adding a Hagstrom 8-string bass part on an updated version of "Taking Care Of No Business" and "My Best Friend."

When Jimi inexplicably appeared at Studio 76 on July 17, 1967, Chalpin was stunned by his good fortune.  In addition to the handful of Curtis Knight recordings featuring the guitarist, he now had Jimi Hendrix music made after his groundbreaking debut album Are You Experienced.    Chalpin next scrambled to see what else he could pull together from his stockpiled archive to create a contrived Knight/Hendrix album.  The following day, he dusted off the 1966 master of "How Would You Feel" and had Knight compose new lyrics and add a new vocal.  This alternate version is included here.    He crafted mixes of Ricky Mason's interpretation of "I Need You Everyday [Sick & Tired]" on which Hendrix had originally appeared the previous year.

On July 31, 1967, Chalpin created an unusual recording drawn from "Suey," an odd 1966 session in which Jimi had participated.  Chalpin combined some of the on air patter radio disc jockey Douglas "Jocko" Henderson was known for, and intercut this with a recording he had produced with film star Jayne Mansfield.

The need by Chalpin to scrape together existing PPX material for a potential Curtis Knight/Jimi Hendrix album was made considerably easier when Hendrix returned on August 8, 1967.  The highlight of that session was Knight's "Gloomy Monday".   Jimi provided the song's propulsive rhythm guitar before he departed.   Needing a solo, Chalpin overdubbed two guitars and even a sitar to try and capitalize on Hendrix's participation.   On the first volume of these PPX recordings , Hendrix can be clearly heard instructing Chalpin not to use his name on these recordings prior to a take of the song.  The producer disregarded Hendrix's request and soon thereafter issued Get That Feeling via Capitol Records.  The album featured a cover image of Jimi Hendrix from the recent Monterey Pop Festival and no image of Knight.  The move both embarrassed and infuriated Hendrix.

Since acquiring the rights to all Jimi Hendrix recordings from Chalpin in 2014, Experience Hendrix has made it a mission to release these Curtis Knight & The Squires sessions tastefully, providing proper historic context, free of misleading packaging and without posthumous overdubs. No Business: The PPX Sessions Volume 2 accomplishes this while helping map out the evolution of Jimi Hendrix as a musician and songwriter.

QuoteOver the decades, legendary producer and engineer Eddie Kramer has been behind the recording console with the best of the best: the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones and many more.

But there's one game-changing artist who impacted the South African native more than any other: Jimi Hendrix, the man who revolutionized rock guitar.

"He changed my life, basically, and the course of my musical and production and engineering career, " Kramer, 78, recalled last week from his home in Prince Edward County, as he awaited the Friday releases of the Hendrix double live-concert CD "Live In Maui" and its accompanying documentary, "Music, Money, Madness ... Jimi Hendrix in Maui."

"Once I met him and recorded him, it was just the most stunning moment in my life."

Kramer was the senior recording engineer at London's Olympic Studios when he met Hendrix in January 1967.

"He's sitting in the corner of Olympic, huddled up in this old raincoat because it was bloody cold in London at the time," Kramer remembers with a laugh. "We all knew about him because he had done 'Hey Joe,' came to London and just shredded the town. All the musicians were crying into their guitars."

Yeah, especially during the first show. Crowd was riding high on illegal stimulants obviously. The documentary takes it sweet time to get to the point, especially the Chuck Wein at the Factory segment is a bit long in the tooth.

A review of The Jimi Hendrix Experience from 2/18/69 I wrote awhile back:

Quote

18Feb.1969 - Royal Albert Hall London, England

sources:

1. "The Royal Albert Hall, London 18.02.1969" aka. "Royal Albert Hall - First Night"

(ATM 115-116, 25/VIII/2000, 2CDRs)

2. "Royal Albert Hall - First Night - Raw Source"

(ATM 115-116 - BONUS DISCS, 2CDRs)

3. SBD Lossy

Recording opens w/ bass feedback from Noel, he also seems to be mimicing the feedback.

"We really appreciate the idea that we got the LP done.(e are putting it down.)(that being able to put it on), I'd like to say that, yeah Hi!, whoever it is sitting at the top of that second stones,

Dig we'd like to ah take about a minute and a half to ah, tune our instruments here and there not a game mind,(not again mon), Happy as gertz singing Noel tuning underneath

And then we'll like ah We've been playing pretty steadily in America this way, good, mimingmophfir right now. We've been playing for... (brief pause, crowd laughs) "ooh"

We've been playing in here, ah, in America, right, right in America. We've played in a very very tideous way, practiced a lot so what we'll do is burn key lot yeah I don't know(trails off...) (People in the crowd yelling Jimi!)

Don't ask me I don't know nothing, (I've never heard of)I've never done, I never met him > Noel laying down some tripped out bass immediately after)

Like we said before we tune in like this we really care for your ears. that's what we do between every single song. And that's why, that's why.(Feedback shrierk) we'll never, face her/phase her,

Everything is stealth/self/stale.(crowd laughs) That's why I wore my hat man, I was thinking about hirtsue/ >>>Mitch's drumming, talkers near the taper is a double Jimi inaudible whammy(not bar),

Jimi also tuning/30- seconds of tuning/adjusting ensues

SBD:

Oh yeah this is, this is a thing we'd like to jam from our ah, friends in Sweden, a group called Hanson and Karlson ah, a song they wrote its called Tax Free we'd like to do it for you, its an instrumental it goes something like this here. >>chords, last minute tuning

Tax Free ? Jimi comps into the intro, Mitch chimes in at :41, always love this jam, free form Jimi, intermittent signal on the recording, perhaps a reflection of Jimi's sound gremlins that plagued the show???, high octane Jimi at 1:42, nice runs back into main theme, chunky funk, mettalic funk by Jimi, nice solo by Jimi near 2:23, nice use of feedback into raucous jam beginning at 3:05, Jimi utilizing some octave runs, tension + at 3:40+, Yeah! Says Jimi before Mitch takes a solo at 4:12, inspired Mitch in front of the home crowd, Jimi lurking underneath near 5:50, emerges with an inspired trill before coming back in with a riff? at 6:19, chunky funk ensues, Jimi lifts off at 6:59, Mitch pounding hard underneath, mixing it up nicely, hot solo by Jimi, Noel playing some solid bass, right there w/ Jimi and Mitch, crescendo near 8:00+ before Jimi quiets it down signaling the end, more feedback laden tremelo to close. Very psychedelic version.

Crowd loves it,

Danke sher, thank you very much ? Jimi

Thank you very much, frau...? - Noel

Gimme an A, gimmie me an A.? - Jimi to Noel

Noel replies, Jimi tunes up.

Thanks for staying this long, we'd like to continue on with some other things(trails off...)

Oh I'll tell you what, a blast from the past how about that? Hehe. Cause we don't know anything else, a thing called let me stand up next to your old lady and pass the joint forward, let me stand next to your Fire. 12,12 into

Fire ? great showcase for Mitch, Jimi changes the first verse to

"you don't care for me child you only care about that, you gotta new fool, huh I like it like that"

Inspired, charged version. Jimi sounding confident vocally,

"ah move over old man, and stop sleeping so sound, you know what the true problem is baby, when you first lay down."

Solo at 1:26, great tone by Jimi. The recording sounds great, Mitch has a slight reverb, more inspired vocals by Jimi with I have only one inch of desire!!! at 2:33( let me stand next to your fire. ) More soaring Jimi in his outro solo, textbook Experience which is to say magnificent, second cycle at 3:10, intense, strong ending/version

Thank you very much that was Fire ? Noel

Play Wild Thing! - from an audience member,

Jimi tuning his B and E strings, a few bass drum hits from Mitch

into

Hear My Train A' Comin' ? killer blusey intro by Jimi, awkward Mitch opening this version, finally syncing up near :36, still off though, Jimi exclaims yeah! At :48, Jimi pushing through w. a superb tone, really nice touches early on, dripping blues, tuning at 1:26 by Jimi,

nice call/response by Jimi throughout the verses, Jimi tunes up again at 2:45, killer signals at 3:00+, ?tears are burning my eye, a whole lot of tears burning my eye, way down inside, way down inside, way down, in my soul.?

Jimi solos at 4:01, the train has arrived, this is Jimi's Chasin' the Train, nice high touches near 5:01, Earth Blues sounds near 5:21, great runs near 5:48, train horn tremelo blasts near 6:12, Jimi really mixing it up near 7:00 before dropping it down yet still digging in, virtuoso Jimi, train fun k at 8:11, more killer blues lines by Jimi, delta Jimi, Jimi the delta blues virtuoso, master, ?going to be a magic boy yeah!? Jimi ends at 11:08 w/ some feedback tremelo, crowd loves it

cut/ into Noel noodling

It isn't too loud now is it? Right, thank you, thank you very much, now I may be able to reach a climax this time, ok thank you.

More tuning

Is that bad or good? hmmm Dig we'd like to ah um, take another blast from the past, um, god,

No, no not Red House 'cause I forgot the words to that one, not right now anyway,

Dig we'd like to dedicate this to somebody's girlfriend, we don't know who she is yet, but lets see now we'll, we'll find out later on which, we'll find out, its a thing called Foxey Lady.

Foxey Lady ? ?you wouldn't understand, not right now anyway.? - says Jimi, before feedback howling into the song proper, trilling at :42 before the first verse, primal scream, howls by Jimi in between verses, solo at 2:30, nice variations by Jimi, in the stratosphere(higher register) early on, back into the chorus at 3:11, trill tap back into chorus, ending at 4:00, Jimi uses his mic stand as a slide, slight pause before Jimi's outro solo vamp, more feedback before all 3 close together, Jimi sets off one final siren of feedback to close, crowd again loves it.

Thanks very much ? Noel

crowd shouting requests at the stage

you can hear someone near the stage say ?Voodoo Child slight return.?

feedback from the amps>

we'd like to ah, if you don't mind testing is this the right microphone?, testing 123, if you don't mind we'd like to get into ah maybe another slow blues lets feel it out see what happens always relax, and ah see (what key are we playing it in?) off mic

Noel says ?A? in the background

Its recorded in 1778 at Benjamin Franklin studios, a thing ah called ah Red House, goes something like this here...

Jimi and Noel continue to tune up...

Jimi strums his guitar 4x

?Thank you for waiting,

Red House ? to get 2 blues numbers in the same set is always a good sign of things to come, extended first part intro, Jimi switching it up to the SG, clean 1:36 in, ?yeah? Jimi exclaims at 1:48, first verse at 2:33, that's where my baby, baby stays!?, 99 and ? days, approximate to his time away from his London paramour Kathy Etchingham, proper solo begins at 5:08, ?hey!? yells Jimi off mic, Mitch and Noel laying it down think behind. Double time march kicks in at 6:28, Jimi lighting up the RAH, Jimi digging in at 7:00+, sky church is now in session!, Noel hitting his Fender bass w/ gusto or frustration?, jazzy interlude unfolds at 7:49, nice jazzy comping by Jimi, Mitch loving this section I'm sure, no Noel at all here, Jimi returns near 9:01 before Noel rejoins subtly, quiet runs by Jimi, very quiet, interesting chords by Jimi 10:03, Jam 252 esque, outro verses near 10:41, 12 bar Jimi to close, guitar out of tune slightly, Jimi passes on his usual strong outro solo march, does finish w/ a few brief lines. Maybe he broke a string?

Crowd loves it. Brief cut in the recording before picking up where it was left off

guitar strums, tuning

where's that ordum, where's that odor coming from???

chatter off mic,

...sorry for the delay we're just trying to get the ah drums so we can hear them onstage, you know?

Feedback

Thy drop suddenly into

Sunshine of Your Love ? the last London version when the Experience segued into it via Hey Joe from 4Jan.1969 on live British television, perhaps Lulu was present tonight?

Jimi's first solo at 1:46, Cream! Live at the RAH! Jam quiets near 2:40+, Jimi giving both Mitch and Noel time to show their stuff, Noel laying down his customary power chords, hits a few lines near 3:27, Jimi lurking underneath, Mitch picking up the tempo, Noel laying it down in front of family and friends, Jimi w/ some great rhythm guitar at 4:07, jam continues to build with Noel, Jimi switches over to lead at 4:37, nice octave runs by Jimi at 4:48, Noel digging in, Jimi hits a trill at 5:06 inspired by Noel that peaks, they stop all together at 5:19, Jimi reintroduces the main theme/riff, sonic outro lines by Jimi begin at 5:48, Jimi slows it down to close near 6:34, pretty solid version, crowd approval

Thank you ? Noel

Jimi switches off his wha-wha pedal,

crowd whistling...

Sorry to take up all your time, but we'd like to do another song or two if you don't mind hearing us,

I feel like you know, there's a certain thing in the air,

Air in the lean(Air-lee-iann) strikes twice and all that kind of, stuff.

Give me an A to Noel

Jimi sings an A, yeee!?

I can't hear a thing? Jimi

This air. - Jimi off microphone

more tuning

I really am sorry for all this and I'm twice as emberrassed you know just standing up and tuning man but you know it just has to be done, you know cowboys are the only ones that stay in tune anyways so what the hell...

ah,

Spanish Castle Magic off mic

SCM ? now a stage workhouse, the clouds are really low baby!?, mics off Mitch's snare in/out, Jimi leads in at 1:35, single note lines by Jimi, trying to build tension, fluctuations w/ his wha-wha, clearer, higher notes at 2:30, Noel busy, Jimi crying, again very Earth Blues esque, high screams on the guitar near 3:11, octave build near 3:35+, requoting, breaks into the chord progression of what would later be called Message To Love at 4:22, although its name had various studio title incarnations ie. Message to the Universe, Crash Landing???*****research, Jimi signaling a new direction with this new jam, Noel and Mitch join in at 4:50, Noel first followed by Mitch, not sure if they played this variation before tonigh? jam quiets down near 5:45, Jimi leading , Jimi still quoting the MTL theme before leading off again at 6:41, Jimi takes a new direction at 7:10, arabian ideas, experimental Jimi, quite good actually, Jimi looking to resolve near 8:00, instead ops for some hanging feedback tremelo between 8:05 and 8:28, similar to what he would do in the 26April Tax Free, chunky funk by Jimi before re-quoting Magic's theme at 8:39, Octave run at 9:06 into crescendo, Jimi stops/chords out at 9:31, hitting his tremelo unti, very IDLT in its break/quiet sections, Jimi bending his tremelo bar, blusey SCM theme reprise by Jimi, full band return at 10:42, Jimi outro solo at 10:52, final EB esque screams/bends into chorus at 11:28,

Thank you very much ? Noel

cut at 12:30/

(interesting version, aren't they all? I could hear embryonic touches of Earth Blues, the MTL jam is definitely unique and foreshadows where Jimi would take this song in the States on his Spring NA Tour) nice sequence between 7:10 and 8:28, funny how at 9:31 he basically plays the quiet section of IDLT before laying down a blusey Magic reprise riff, certainly uneven but fascinating to hear nonetheless)

crowd loves it

more tuning after the cut...

Jimi tapping his fretboard, manipulating his toggle switch, stirrying the electronic spirits, creating a wall of feedback, harsh/loud cadence at :39, opening up the feedback, fingering into the first few bars of the

Star Spangled Banner ? at 1:04, Mitch assisting as well, great tone by Jimi here, after the rockets red glare, Jimi creates the sounds of War, missiles flying, sirens, machine gun fire, back into those bombs bursting in air...at 2:19, more tremelo feedback toggle into, the end of the melody w/ gusto, begins his feedback laden decant into(short but powerful version btw)

Purple Haze ? solid out of the gate, Jimi extends an extra bar before beginning the vocals/first verse, first solo at 1:21, nice snare work by Mitch, Jimi hits his enamel/teeth at 1:39, takes another go around at 1:57, reprises main riff at 2:15, Jimi late coming into the chorus, starts at ?all in my mind...?, octave/searing outro position before another stab at the main riff to act as an outro, furious outro leads by Jimi, w/ feedback, (short but sweet version), one final quote of the main theme up on octave,

Thank you very much, thank you Noel

crowd clamoring for more,

Yeah before we go ahead on I'd like to say that ah, I think we would like to you know play here next week again because something happened to the tickets and all that and our friends didn't get a chance to come. I mean all of 'em all of 'em I'm sorry all of 'em you know, and ah like Noel he might bring his own thing down the Fat Mattress, anyway that is (R)oel Noel Redding on the bass

just in case you might be ah getting your program screwed up in some kind a way. And we have Mitch Mitchell on drums and I loved to play mouther/mouthier??? more tuning....

feedback on stage

more tuning

Yeah we'd to dedicate this last song, oh wanna say thank you very much for staying with us this long man it was really outta sight because like you know we were just playing by ear anyway and see what's happening its a good thing you all did the same, cause I think we had a lot of fun at least I did I don't know about you. but like to say thank you very much we hope to get a chance to see you all again, very, very soon you know and ah, I'd like to dedicate these words to y'all, to the last tune of the evening so

Voodoo Child slight return ? Jimi begins the opening riff w/ a an early tease of Pass It On/Straight Ahead.(See Billy Cox' recollection of their first jam, pg 151 in UH, in which they played the ?pattern? of Straight Ahead), Jimi picks up Voodoo proper, strong opening, first position bend at :47, strong vocals by Jimi all night, yeah! He exclaims, slight scat ?yeah yeah yeah yeah?, at 1:30,

first solo at 1:54, sheets of sounds Jimi, strong first position bending w/ toggle switch, building tension at 3:13, jam settles a bit, where Jimi is playing low, adding country and blues infused voodoo signals/riffs, beautiful call and response at 4:24, 2nd big solo at 4:53, more feedback tremelo, mixolydian runs into ascending Noel propulsion, Jimi quiets it down near 5:55, fluid Jimi, eliminates an effect, blues triumph playing, notes near 6:39 sound very similar but more expanded to what he would pull out in the next show's Stone Free, Jimi morphs back into the Voodoo, his wha-wha pedal clearly going up and down via the recording as he quote's the intro riff, unleashes a quick bed of feedback before he jumps all over it with a virtual torrent of notes, nice variations at 8:08, Jimi feeling his entire rig, more EB cries before they all covalesce into an outro chord vamp, Jimi's amp still feeding back . Crowd loves it. Show is over, no encore.

I love shows like this where after reading how bad it was, you go into the listening and find out the show is actually quite good w/ quite a few amazing musical moments, which is true w/ the majority of live Hendrix.

After barely being able to discern what Jimi was saying on the Audience portion of the intro, the SBD recording was able to give me a clearer understanding of both Jimi's banter in between numbers as well as added clarity in the music itself.

Tax Free drips w/ psychedelia, Jimi sounds very comfortable in his Electric sermon. Hear My Train is excellent even if Mitch is off time for the first minute or 2, eventually they sync up and put forth an incredible effort. Sunshine of Your Love has some great improv and frankly has some of the best improvisational bass playing of Noel Reddding's brief 2 and 2/3 years with Jimi.

Spanish Castle deserves significant kudos in that it serves as a sign post for Jimi's music in the second half of 1969, Earth Blues and Message To Love both are teased, quoted and played in the jam. Jimi's brief tease of Pass It On/Straight Ahead in the intro of Voodoo Child reinforces the idea that Jimi was looking ahead, always.

Pretty excited about this release specifically the medley from 6/24/70 as described by Hendrix vault leader John McDermott in his book Sessions.  Hendrix was on fire(no pun intended)in 1970 both live and in the studio.  Curious if the copyright laws, changes in the EU helped spur this release?  Either way, get ready for a great Hendrix box.

Angel
Release: 23-04-2022 | Label: Legacy Recordings / Bertus
RSD 2022
1x 7″
Recorded at Hendrix's newly created recording facility, Electric Lady Studios in 1970, "Angel (Take 7)," makes up Side A of this exclusive 7″ single white vinyl release. The track was recently released for the first time as part of the Electric Lady Studios: A Jimi Hendrix Vision album. Side B includes previously unreleased "Message to Love" was recorded in 1970 at New York Pop Festival at Downing Stadium on New York's Randall's Island. Both tracks are among the last recorded, just before the legendary musician's untimely death.

This isn't mentioned on the US RSD site, but my guess is that will be available in 'Merica too. And the Electric Lady Studios set has been delayed.

ETA: and it's gone. Delayed as well.

I need some help figuring where a couple of tracks are from. I've had them on my hard drive for ages, but in low bitrate, and was going to upgrade... but now I have no idea where they came from.

The songs are Pali Gap and Midnight. But they're not the versions from the South Saturn Delta release.

These versions are mixed very differently, Pali Gap is shorter at 4:43, and Midnight is longer at 6:02. Any idea where they're from?

Ordered this one from one of my local book shops - one of the owners is a fellow Hendrix geek - but it never showed up. He got really mad at the import company they use on my behalf  - and suggested that I'd buy it from Amazon then. Nope, the shipping costs are much too steep. Howeverr, it also listed on the bookdepository.com, so  it should be here within a two weeks or so. And I tipped the guy in the book shop to do the same for his own collection. Next time I run into a him at a live show he will buy me a beer.

From an 1989 issue of Guitar Player.

https://jasobrecht.substack.com/p/noel-redding-on-jimi-hendrixs-red

QuoteTo me "Red House" was Jimi's way of using his musical roots, everything he knew and understood best, in our pop context. A standard blues structure, it allowed him infinite freedom in a. familiar, and therefore relaxing, area. The blues are made for the guitar and "Red House" is no exception. Jimi could play it as short or as long as the mood moved him. Being a rock and roller, I preferred the shorter versions though in the last year and a half of the group (early 1966 to mid-1969) our gigs were mostly extended jams. Sometimes they'd go on so long I'd just say 'fuck it' and stop, take a break, return and lead everyone back into the song.

There's no bass on the original recording released on our Polydor 1p "Are You Experienced". It was late 66 or early 67, in Kingsway Studios, London, if I remember right, when Jimi said to us, "This is a blues in B" (B because we were down half a tone). I borrowed a terrible, awful, hollowbody electric guitar from someone at the studio - it might have been Alan Freeman - because I liked to play along on rhythm to familiarize myself with the sequence. From being a full- time lead guitarist, I was very nervous about playing bass for some time. We ended up just recording it. First take, I think. My guitar's bass was turned full up to make a good contrast to Jimi's.

Obviously, live I used the bass except for rare occasions like a Paris Olympia concert when Keith Richards had been hanging around backstage. I borrowed his guitar, plugged it into my bass amp, and turned the tone control to full bass. Nobody planned on changing instruments then as part of the act - too flash.

Noel performed some of his best playing in live versions of Red House.  As an improvisor Noel was limited, his bass solos consisted of shorter runs and power chords if you will.  In RH he was omnipresent.  I'm sure he was bored to tears playing it night in and out, it was Jimi's sermon, his electric church.

My dog has worn a Stealie collar since he fully grew.
It has an old seatbelt buckle as the release to take it off.
So yeah, what Keller said.

I saw that date and thought: That's odd, how can I not be at all familiar with a Hendrix show? But reading the link, it's apparently never been bootlegged. Cool! Can't wait to check it out.
