So it was stated in another that we need a Comic Book thread, and I happen to agree. There's always something to talk about comic book-wise.

I just finished reading Batman: The Long Halloween. I read the whole thing in a single sitting today. I hadn't read it since it came out 13 years ago and I liked it a hell of a lot better now than I did back then. I have the other two Jeph Loeb/Tim Sale Batman books coming to me via my local public library.

And to start off the thread, here's a question:

Marvel or DC?

I'm a DC dude myself, you'll always find me in either a Phish shirt, a Batman shirt or my Green Lantern shirt (the one Green Lantern shirt gets worn more than all my Batman shirts combined.).

The Walking Dead is the only comic book I've ever read. I love the shit out of it. Other than that, I do have a few issues of this weird comic book concerning Boba Fett that came free with some action figure or something that I bought as a kid.

i loved Stray Toasters, an epically weird four issue series from the mid- '80s, in my very brief days collecting a very few comics:

i also read Cerebus The Aardvark for many years, until the creator, Dave Sim, went completely batshit insane and began publishing longer and longer, more and more religiously and misogynistically insane, laughably argued essays in place of the actual comic. which story turned to crap, too. impressive, though, that he began doing it in the late '70s, when almost no one was making independent comics, and said he'd keep doing it for 300 issues. which he did. though, yeah, a good 120 of those issues sucked.

but for a long time it was a very smart, very funny, beautifully drawn comic.

there was a great wolverine parody character for a few issues, until marvel threatened to sue.

didn't slim start a comic book thread a long time ago or something?

DC is for kids
Marvel is for adults and intelligent kids.

Really? I always saw it as being the other way around. DC is full of dark and gritty detective stories and has a more intellectual cast of characters. Marvel is more about flashy, colorful characters and has easy to follow stories that move at a pace that anyone can comprehend.  As a kid I loved Marvel, and barely read DC. Then as I got older I read more and more DC and let Marvel fall to the wayside.

The last time I read a comic book I was 14. Coincidentally, around the same time I discovered porn. So basically, I'm talking out my ass.

I did like the DC graphic novels a lot.

So true. I fell as though most people are like that.

The longest halloween was great. I read another one that I thought was just okay and haven't read the third one yet.( sorry doing this from phone so I can't look up names)
Will post more when I'm near a. Compuetr

I read DC (Batman, especially) as a kid but I was never a big comic book type.

Until recently.

I'd kept up, occasionally with things like Frank Miller's Dark Night Returns and DK2 and whatnot. Then,  couple years ago, I read The Watchmen and loved it. In the past year I've become addicted to Walking Dead.

I've also read:
The Preacher
Y: the Last Man
Some X-Men
Scott Pilgrim
a few other random things that I don't recall
and now I'm reading Ex Machina.

Lotta stuff is queued up behind that too.

So, yeah, I now love comics.

Mr Minor

So here is my question:
What series should I start reading?  Is there one that has recently started, or continued in a way that I could get caught up relatively easily?

I miss the days of hitting the comic book store from my days as a kid.  We had one I could walk/ride my bike to and i loved just going through and checking out all the different comics.

So basically, recommendations of a series that I could jump into with relative ease that would offer a good story?

I don't know of any books that are at a good jumping on point right now... but most every book is avaliable in Trade Paperback form, which is a collection of  between 6-12 issues, and you can catch up with them pretty quickly.

Some good TPB's to pick up would be:

The Walking Dead
Fables
Ex-Machina (Series is over and complete)
Y: The Last Man Standing (Series is over and complete)
Preacher (Series is over and complete)
100 Bullets (Series is over and complete)
The Boys

Any Batman TPB's by Frank Miller or Jeph Loeb.

I'd say marvel zombies. Very easy to get into and a blast to read. Haven't read the Walking Dead series yet. I might if the show starts to suck balls.

But i just read at Barnes & Noble Muhamad Alli Vs. Superman.....Thought it would of been so much cooler.

I'm a big fan of this guy:

Here's his first self published comic:

He also had a comic on Vertigo called 100%:

Here's an awesome drawing done by him:

of course all things Jim Woodring are genius. wordless stories in a very strange world.

Frank is the name of his original comic, which you can buy in book form.

there's Frank over there as my avatar.
