Title: Remembering Shawn...
Post by: tet on May 18, 2012, 11:46:26 AM
I have just received an upsetting PM on Facebook from Shawn's (whyweigh) brother, informing me that Shawn has lost his battle with polychondritis.

I am at a true loss for words, other than to say that getting to know Shawn has been an absolute pleasure over these many years.  He always had a smile on his face, which was incredible, knowing how much he was suffering for so many years.  Yet, he persevered so long and fought so courageously that his strength is a lasting inspiration to me.  He was a good soul and the type of friend who comes around very rarely in life - utterly loyal, genuinely caring, and completely full of life.

We'll miss you, buddy.  Rest in peace.

Quote
from Dave Williams
You don't know me but you were acquainted with my brother Shawn Williams. I'm sending this message to as many of the people that knew him as I can reach in the hopes of getting the word out to everyone who knew Shawn and grew to know him as a friend. Shawn passed away last night after his 9 year battle with relapsing polychondritis at around 8pm. No arrangements have been made yet but once they are I will share them with anyone that is interested. Email me at williams.dave@hotmail.com if you would like information on the viewing, funeral service, etc, when those things are decided.

Shawn was such an amazingly strong, thoughtful, and upbeat individual in spite of the cards he was dealt by life. I know the people he touched in life would want to know of his passing, that's why I'm reaching out... But I don't know everyone. If you know anyone that would want to know but I can't reach on Facebook, please let them know.

Only met him once but he seemed like a really mellow and nice guy in person and of course he was always good to have around here.

Dude was a very talented photographer too.

Sad news, RIP.

Oh man, I'm so out of touch with what has been happening in these parts that I did not even know the extent of Shawn's medical issues.  He was a truly good and kind person, I am better for the little I got to know him.

Wow, this sucks. What a good dude, those of us who loved his photography will keep his spirit alive through his art.
I only met Shawn once, but I wish I could have spent more time with such a genuinely great guy.
I was unaware of his fight other than the car accident, but this couldn't have happened to a better person.
RIP Shawn, you will be missed.

Looking through his flickr galleries... he had a photographer's eye, no doubt. Incredibly creative.

Anyway, thought I'd post this pic... I will miss seeing him at shows. I always ran into him. Every show I went to in the last couple of years.

One of my favorite parts about Shawn was that he was one of the really dedicated people to the band.  I can remember him asking me if could arrive in Atlanta early last year for the shows.  The guy drove solo from PA to Atlanta in one day.  He showed up at my apartment around 1am.  It was mind blowing to see him be in such physical pain but at the same time so liberated by the music of Phish.  He'd always be in the corner of the apartment while Scott and I are sitting on the couch just being super crazy, a small shit eating grin on his face as he watched us be mad.  Despite his hearing, I think you could just tell the guy loved life and being in the moment in life.

The hotel debacle from NYE '10 is another great memory I have of hanging with Shawn.  Having to scramble on the 31st of December to find lodging in Manhattan, after we were kicked out of one hotel.  I'll never forget, the 180 of feeling so fucked to victory.  We lucked out and pulled a room at the Hotel Penn for the 31st and 1st.  After the paug brunch on the 1st, I remember meeting Shawn at a pub right by our hotel, and we had a beer while he was waiting on a bunch of people from phishposters to meet him.  And again, despite his physical handicaps, it was this sort of zeal that I did come to admire about him.  The man lived life as best he could, and overcoming all odds.  I always had the utmost respect for him because as others have mentioned, he was a genuinely good human being with such a warm and caring heart.

id say it was close to a decade ago when i first met shawn in person.  i dont recall the show, but i think phish was still on hiatus1.  moe. or yonder or something...

such a positive person despite all of his medical problems, dude always wanted to just keep moving, get to the next show, etc, etc.  never heard him complain, just kept moving...

so sad today.

oh no.....RIP Shawn.

the world has lost a truly positive individual.

I would see Shawn at nearly every show I was at, in every corner of the country. He would never say much but the love was there.  He'd always smile, be happy to see you and couldn't be happier seeing the band he loved.

He truly made the best of what he was dealt and always carried so much positivity with him. I will miss him and I think we can all learn from his courage and positivity towards life.

This is terrible.  I also never had the pleasure of meeting him, but his photography is spectacular.  Definitely taking some time today to look at his photos and listen to Phish... sorry to see such a talent and good human being leave the earth so soon.  I will be thinking of him, his family, and all of his friends on the paug today.

Dude was fucking inspirational. One of the nicest and strongest people I've ever met.

Hardcore Phish fan to be sure.

When most people would have justifiably folded up and checked out of life, he lived it bigger than most healthy folk.  The solo miles he drove for shows put pretty much all of us to shame.

What a loss.

I wish I came around here more often, but as things in this life tend to do, I don't.

We have a family here, and despite our physical distancely-separatedness, we're still family.  Bonded by Phish.  Forever.

Yup.

Its odd, because despite the fact that I've only met some of you once or twice, I mean...  we've spent years on this board together, geeking on Phish.  And thats where the emotional attachment comes from, because of our deep feelings about the band and its music.  And when we engage each other in the discourse of their music and why more people need to realize the magnificence of the 8/10/04 ACDC Bag, we're talking about real shit we feel.  Its just prefaced through this non-engaging platform of the internet, so in a way we really only experience the one-sided nature of our own perspective, but... well I'm not really sure where I was going with this actually.

Just that everybody here are people I've spent so much time talking to and about Phish and whatnot, that it like...  I don't know, its part of me now.

I keep going back to when Phish called it quits at the end of 2.0 when Trey made his announcement.

A lot of us had mixed feelings about it given how they had played in Vegas and since it was becoming more and more apparent that Trey had a real problem.

Not ww though, I remember from his posts on Furthur that you could tell that he was truly devastated and had planned on seeing as many shows as he could for as long as he could.

So as much fun as it is to bag on 3.0, maybe someone like Shawn can give us a little perspective and we can think about how Phish coming back gave him some joy in his final years.

Top notch post right there.

it feels so selfish to be melodramatic

but i had a really hard day 5/18/12
I think that's understandable.  I def empathize with you.  The news of his death hit me kind of hard.  Cause its someone I did know, and someone I did interact with and communicate with outside of this board.  It's someone I spent time with and made beautiful memories with, memories that highlight the very essence of being on the edge of life itself.  And on a human level that's heavy, very heavy.  I also looked at the fact that the guy was born a year before me, and yeah, it just filled my heart with a lot of sadness that such a wonderful person was removed from this earth so early in the game.

And then I look at Shawn himself, and his dedication to Phish's music is just as inspiring, and I think about how easy it is to get caught up in the bullshit that I do, and here was a guy, a man, who's life was complicated on levels that I can't even fathom, and he's not caught up in bullshit.  Not at all, and that's mind blowing on many levels to me.  All and all, yeah, it is very tough to hear news like this when you can connect the face to the internet handle, and you know the person behind the computer screen.

I've been having a hard time coming to grips with Shawn's death over the last couple of days.

On one level, a lot of us "kind of" know each other, and we try to keep each other in the loop of our lives... So in that respect it was really shocking and hard to believe.  I read back some of his last posts on Phishposters and saw a guy who was looking forward to getting to Watkins Glen again, looking forward to poster drops and telling us not to worry about how annoying a specific board member was...

But on another level, I don't really know what he was going through, how he was feeling, if he had come to terms with his illness taking his life, and on that level I'm very sad.

I also will really miss the guy.

I guess my best memory of Shawn was at Bonnaroo 2008, during the Jackie Greene acoustic set I stood next to the soundboard (he seemed to know to look for me there), Shawn was in the handicapped section... It was the last day of Bonnaroo and everyone was really tired, but Shawn was there super happy, smiling and enjoying the mellow acoustic music.

My last interaction with Shawn was on Record Store Day this year when he offered to pick me up a couple titles at midnight on Friday... I was asleep, didn't get the messages, and I'm not sure if I ever got back to him to say thanks.  I know Shawn did a lot of favours for people selflessly, I wish I could have returned the favour before he left us.

Goodbye Shawn, RIP.

Very sad news.  I barely check in here anymore but I remember many nights, following along with the live set lists or whatever topic, and Shawn was always a part of it.  I never met Shawn in RL that I know of, but we were at many of the same shows and hung out in the forums and the old Furthur chat room.  My deepest sympathies and prayers go out to his family as they now have to try to put this behind them.

How did it go again?

Haven't been on the paug much lately, but I also received the message on FB from Shawn's brother last week about his passing and was really heartbroken to hear the news and wanted to

It was 10 years ago when I first started talking to Shawn on furthur....I was a 16 year old fresh faced, eager, enthusiastic and completely clueless n00b on furthur and I clearly remember WW reaching out to me and helping me learn the ropes of sharing music and helping me figure out where to even begin with this overwhelming amount of exciting new music & happily answered all my stupid n00b questions.

I remember when he first got sick and know he has had a lot of health problems throughout the last 9 years, but I was shocked to hear the news, b/c like Mattstick, I had no idea it was life-threating and wonder if he knew and had come to terms with it. Considering all that he had to go through with his health, he really was amazingly positive, even when he would vent, he never seemed to ever feel sorry for himself, and just seemed at peace with his life and just did what he loved as much as he could. And like other people have mentioned, he was always happy, if not eager, to help people out, especially when it came to phish.

I will always remember Shawn as one of my first 'phriends' when I was new to the community and how approachable and welcoming he was and that he seemed genuinely excited by my new eagerness and excitement for Phish and wanted to help me and learn about and love them as much as he did.

RIP Shawn

QuoteMothership Art Collective donates to Mockingbird and medical research foundation
Posted ~2 hours ago by jackl - 0 comments - Link: http://phi.sh/1s67jl
The Mothership Art Collective, organizers of the First Tube Art Show held in Atlantic City, NJ on June 16, 2012, is proud to announce that $2,000 has been donated from the proceeds of the show to the Benaroya Research Institute of the Virginia Mason Foundation and The Mockingbird Foundation.
The Benaroya Research Institute supports medical research to find a cure for Relapsing Polychondritis, an autoimmune disease that attacks cartilage. The donation was made in memory of Phish fan Shawn Michael Williams, 29, of Claysville, PA, who passed away on May 17, 2012.
The Mockingbird Foundation, an all-volunteer charity founded by Phish fans in 1997, is the author of The Phish Companion books, operates the non-profit Phish.net website, and has donated over $720,000 to support music education programs for underserved children.  The Foundation and Backbeat Books has recently announced the publication of a Third Edition of the popular Phish Companion book series, in paper and epub formats, to debut early in 2013.
Thanks to everyone that bought a poster tube or art from Screens 'n' Suds, PhanArt, or the Mockingbird table during the art show.  An extra big thanks to those artists, fans, and volunteers that donated items and their time, including many volunteers from Phish.net who staffed the Mockingbird Foundation table and sold the items donated by PhanArt and other Mothership Art Collective poster and pin artists.  Special thanks in particular go to the Mothership Art Collective's Logistic and Artist coordinators, Shawn Hughes and Kara Masthay.

Had a quiet moment today on my way to work and this picture popped up on the iPod as a stand-in cover for a phish mix I had made. I'm glad music makes me remember so many things, and people.

On multiple occasions this past weekend, I thought of Shawn and wished he were still around to capture those moments when everything linked up perfect, the music, lights, crowd, energy, etc.  I took a moment to simply be thankful for my life. I was thankful to be at a show at all, and when the band screwed up, I laughed it off with them. When they didn't deliver on the songs I wanted them to, but then surprised me at other times, I took it for what it was.

Regardless of what you think of the shows so far this tour, or the state of Phish in general, if you take a moment at every show when the lights are just right and take a mental picture (because thats the only one you're going to get), I think you'll find your appreciation for the moment to be greatly heightened.

I def. did this during Rift, when Page was going nuts on the first night.  It was just surreal being back at Hampton, watching my favorite band.  I've been seeing that band play that room for 15 years now.  What a treat!

Lyndsey (his sister)
Shawn was an incredible person.  Through all his struggles, he always was a glass full type of guy.  I always admired his devotion to Phish.

I'll never forget the first time I met him.  He showed up at my apartment early afternoon, on July 3rd, 2010.  A few other paugers were over at my place.  We had all (Shawn included) gone to the show the night before in Charlotte.  We missed Shawn though.  He was always going in early to the shows to snag and secure a good spot on in the venue.  I forgot where he stayed on 7/2/10.  But he showed up early afternoon, on 7/3.  With his condition he was never much of a talker.  We shook hands, discussed last nights show, and shortly afterward he departed to head to the venue again.

Phish fans always get the perception of being drugged out degenerates.  Your brother was always what defied that stereotype.  He was a kind soul, with a very open heart, always willing to help and share.  He was there for the music.  And the music only.  All the other bullshit, he always ignored.  His passion ignited and inspired him to travel and traverse across this great country for the sole cause of being enlightened by live music.

2010 and 2011 he crashed at my apartment for the Atlanta runs.  In 2011, I remember him showing up at some ungodly hour in the wee hours of the morning, he had driven straight through from PA to Atlanta.  A truly impressive stint of driving.  You could sense he had physical pain, but he never talked about it or burdened anyone else with it.  Again, a truly noble and respectable approach to living.

I think my favorite memory though.  Shawn, myself, and a few others got a hotel room for 12/31 and 1/1 for the 2010 New Years Eve run.  We stayed at the Hotel Penn.  For whatever reason, I ended up with Shawn at some pub down the road from our hotel.  He was meeting up with people from a different message board.  The reactions though.  Exactly the same as here.  It's quite telling that as individual he was loved universally.  People watching as strangers from the web put his face to his internet persona (which was the exact same as real life) and having the revelation, that Shawn was Shawn.  An awesome person to get a beer with and discuss Phish.  A loving person, with a thirst for life, and live music.

He's def missed.  I'm also super grateful I got to know him and spend some time with him.
