Really enjoyed Trey's playing in that second set. Had a blast in the LST. The whale was pretty much absent the entire show, especially during key songs it has ruined (Hood, Reba). And while it was used in Zero, it fits Zero.

Do you think these crash land segues are basically now something that is here to stay, such as the Wilson -~-^^~> Light?

I hope not!  I'd rather have no segues.

I think they are something we should all get used to.....I just hate it when they really rush it and it sounds forced....They could improve though....Doesn't really kill the show for me too bad as long as the songs themselves are played well....

I know it is a small thing considering the entirety of a show. I guess it bugs me because it comes off as unprofessional/unpracticed/unprepared. Throughout their history, segueing was something they turned into an art. And now I find myself lost in the music and then all of a sudden there is this crashing dissonance generally from Trey, everyone seems momentarily lost, it's chaos on stage and then the new song starts up..... and they then need 30 seconds so that they can figure out what the hell is going on. What makes it worse is that they are writing set lists now which means they could take a brief moment to say to each other prior to the show, okay these are the chord changes we are going to use to get out of this song and into this. It's not that hard....especially for world class musicians.

The Hood sounded old school tonight. He went '95 style when, after nurturing the gorgeous tone in the jam, he took it up a notch by simply switching to that biting tone. That's how I dig it....simply ramping up the volume is easy. Love my milked Hoods. Can't wait to hear that again.  :music:

Looking forward to listening to the second set.

I don't doubt you PG. That second set sounded awesome. We were really fortunate to have that amazing stream again; seriously, we're not listening to sharts anymore. I forgot to mention in my post that the Light also sounded amazing. I'm very jealous of you at this moment. I've also been to the Greek, so I know just what went down. I know how amazing the sound is in there and what you can do with the lights.

It was a great lizards. Flubs, yes. But Page was on point and Trey got it together toward the end. It was beautiful.

The "post suzy" jam was just a return to the big jam they were in during suzy. Just like they did on halloween, they dropped back into the jam, only thing is this jam is nothing like that jam. It was a big rock jam as opposed to a funk jam. But structurally it was the same.

Also, some dude had a big sign up front that said "we love u trey" on one side amd "please no more whammy" on the other. Trey saw it and kinda said "that's not gonna happen"

Still no whale in hood or slave makes pie a happy boy.

really good show last night.  much better than the first two.

light and suzy were the obvious highlights.  best hood id heard in a while.  not sure if there was much of a peak, but there was some very nice interplay during the jam.  i found the "no more whammy please sign" disrespectful, but luckily hood and slave where relatively whale-free.  i also really enjoyed the 2001.  not rushed like almost every 3.0 version has been.  mike went to the footbell quite a few times during this jam, something he only does on special o-motherfucking-cassions.

great time at the greek over the weekend.  unfortunately, i think they were warming up for the first couple shows.  kind of wish i was seeing them around alpine, when theyll be in the swing of things, but oh well.

Said very well SuperFreakie, as it hurts me too. You do make very valid points of knowing the setlists and still the transitions are very tough.  It kills the moment if you ask me.

^^^ pie guy, not sure where your spot was but a crew of us got siiick seats page side stage level, what I saw was a prep school hippie sign that Trey shook his head at.

Someone did have a sign with "no more whammy" on one side and "I love you Trey" on the other as pie said.
During Reba, light etc literally when Trey would go into whale the sign guy would wave the "no whammy"
Kinda fuct but hey it may have worked.

Ugh, crazy hung over from too much of everything, driving to telluride!

More on show later

Got some sick pins kicked down, one for each Greek and a Telli.  I'll post photos of these later

Agreed. It's funny when i saw Furthur like bob and Phil are up there in age and they just nailed every segue. I think with Phish they should just take they're time to get to the next song. And tell Trey not to just decide when to go. To actually work it out.

Well...  here's the thing.  If Trey's playing weren't always out of key, when using the whammy, then yes, the sign would be disrespectful.  It would be like someone holding up a sign in 1997 that says "Please no more funk" or "Where's the guitar solos?", ie: taking an extreme stance to put forth a simple personal taste opinion on something that the band/Trey is personally emotionally involved in, where the band is legit breaking new ground.

BUT....  we've had almost 1.5 years since the reunion.....  almost 70 shows or something.  Thats PLENTY of time to figure it out.  I have to grant Trey, though, that, for the most part, he has figured out some neat uses of it.  However, he's relying on that for the entirety of jams, forcing the music to be fit into that technique framework, rather than going to it when he feels it could really add something unique and new to a jam thats featured him simply stab out individual notes or funk out chords.

BUT, regardless of Horced segues and whammy usage.... you guys have missed the most important thing here:  3 straight shows with multiple 13+ minute jams, and each show had at least  one 15+ minute jam!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  And not woked out songs, but actual JAMS.  8/5 Disease, Tweezer (close enough), 8/6 RnR, Simple and 8/7 Light, Hood, Slave (all in the same set!).

Add to that the extended Cities, the SuPrizy, not-under-7-minutes 2001...     I think this is the best thing ever.

The intent is back; they want to jam.  And I think I can see whats going to happen next...............

Setting: Practice room, Telluride

Trey (to Page): Dude, these huge jams have been awesome, but we're getting so into it that they're keeping us from being able to get the whole setlist in...  maybe we should just say fuck it and let it go wherever?

Page:  ::shakes head::

Fishman (poking his head through the doorway right after Trey finishes): Or maybe you could always just start up Horse and see what happens after that.   :-P

Mike:  I like things that bounce.  We should do those.

yeah, fuk "disrespectful". we've kept these guys in serious business for the  last 20 years. i mean, its not like anyone every thought the "turn mike up" signs in the 90s were "disrespectful.
i think that the band shouldnt feel 'disrespected' if the fans are into shit enough to be offering feedback.

Thank you, pie guy, it *was* beautiful.  It was a fantastic choice of song in that spot, totally unexpected.  Certainly not perfect, but considering they only play it once a year, it was damn good.  More importantly the vibe was maintained.  And yeah, Page killed it.

And nobody's mentioned the First Tube.  You won't be able to see it on tape/stream, but Trey was jumping around like a crazy, super-happy person all throughout 1st Tube, and it just sent the crowd into a frenzy.  I mean a tear-the-house-down party.  It really ended this run well.  Also the Slave was just sublime on the new guitar.  Just patience exhibited in this Slave, and yes, this 2001.  Not rushed, jet letting the funk flow.  I do wish the same patience was directed toasted the segues, it's true.

About the setlists, I'm pretty sure they alwas had some sort of setlist plan that was flexible, an from all the communication on stage leading up to the segues (botched or not), it's clear that they were making some of their song choices in the moment.

I have plenty to say about you misguided whale-haters, but for another time.  So I'll simply ask, if you hate blowjobs so much, why do you keep showing up at the blowjob store?

good run.  not sure the greek brought any magic though.

there were some good jams, by magic i meant there was nothing out of the ordinary song wise, no GD sit-ins or songs, etc.

eta:  im sure it was a great big party and everyone had a blast and i wish i was there.

OMG OMG OMG , i just listened to that light, honestly after my big 98 ambient kick a week or so ago, the ambient part of that light almost sounded 98 grade (as far as ambient goes)

that was NASTY, im loving this show, that jam made me totally forget about that really rough "transition"

Told y'all. There is nothing, and I mean nothing on the face of this earth, like a three night psychedelic family party at the Greek. I've seen other bands at the Greek but if you want to really know what the Greek is, go see a Phish or GD event there. Regrettably, I have only seen GD events at the Greek and have yet to see Phish there. YET. So happy for you PG, so happy for all that went and felt the magic.............

Some of the best jamming they've played yet in 3.0
Light, 46 Days, Suzy, 2001 and First Tube were all stand out versions.  Easily the best Light yet.

Hell yeah.  See you in Telluride Bitches.  :wtu:

Have to agree with Pie, the Greek is a great venue,  I have seen about 10 shows there, but not since the Comes A Time tribute with Trey in 2005 I think, so it has been a while.  I was at the '93 Phish show, and things have come a long way since then.  I have to say, it is an epic venue.   Better than Red Rocks or the Gorge?  Soundwise, 100000%, but the others really have their merits, as does MSG and to a smaller extent Hampton.  Still, I was really impressed with the venue this time around, almost more than any other time.  I saw Primus there which was actually pretty sick too.  Hicks and Messick caught two nights of Radiohead, which must have been dope.

Anyway, listened to this show on the drive into Tride, most of it anyway.  The Sueprise is sick and so is the Theme and Light jam.....

Pretty fired up for the venue I'm at right now...I am in Mountain Village and there are heads everywhere, and all the golf club set is fleeing town...This shit is going to destroy!!!!  :samurai:

I think you got it backwards........  Phish is the ONLY band that can make you REALIZE you are actually globs of individual atoms and molecules combined together standing on a hunk of rock hurtling through intergalactic space around a giant glob of gas and plasma which actually HAS emotions that are going on equally similar a ride.

And you are half-correct; the music WAS the experience.  You went to experience THAT music, which you could get nowhere else.

The Dead died, and the hordes of pestilence descended upon the secret, imparting a party identity that at first rivaled the musical experience, and then unfortunately overtook the musical experience and BECAME the focal experience, where the music was only a FRACTION of the whole event, and not the main focus; a mere added bonus.

Hence the ubiquitous "Amazing EXPERIENCE" gushing on the comment section of every PH show on LP, and on into 3.0.  Wow Page is killing the piano during the WUDMTF shit!!!!!!!!  Go man!!!!!

alright guys, i know i dont post around these parts that much, but i once heard of some sort of gumbo72203 translator.  does that thing still exist?

he is right about 3 straight shows having 15+ minute jams.  i love this idea, but thats why it was strange that i didnt like the friday night show that much.  cities was dirty and i loved the simple jam, but the rest of the show...eh.  ghost->mikes was an abortion, and seven below->paug wasnt much better.  anyway, they are jamming a little more, so im very curious to see where this tour ends up going.  while 3 shows was plenty for me, i kind of wish i was seeing them at deer creek or alpine.  its not that i want to see more shows, its that i want to see the shows once phish starts getting in the swing of things.  from now on when i travel for phish im going to plan it this way.

id also like to say that it was very nice to meet the pie guy on saturday night!  he caught me outside the dorms while i was stenciling my question mark toga.  confirmed solid dude.

edit: so whats the consensus on these shows?  mediocre first two nights with some highlights, but a very good show on the third night?

The Greek Theatre
Berkeley, CA

Set I:  AC/DC Bag, Foam, Gotta Jibboo, Reba, Sleep Again, Army Of One, Poor Heart > 46 Days, Tube, Character Zero

Set II:  Wilson > Light, 20 Years Later > Harry Hood, Theme From The Bottom, 2001, Suzy Greenberg, Slave To The Traffic Light

Encore:  Lizards, First Tube

not sure about segues.  whatvers

Flew back into CO today, really glad I made the trek out there to see Phish in that setting, it was a beautiful place to see multiple shows. I was more with it last night than the other two, so I can set up a better review. AC/DC Bag was a good opener, prolly the best Set I opener of the three nights. Foam was a little rough, and Page's solo was not all that impressive (like It's Ice the night before). Haven't seen much about the Jiboo although I haven't really read the thread in it's entirety. I am not a Jibboo fan, but this one persuaded me to dance like a fool.

The Reba is my favorite one I've heard so far since they've been back. Grain of salt there though.

Sleep Again was really good, Page stepped up big time and tore the shit out of it. He even said as much to the band I think and they let him have his Army Of One which was also good, but following Sleep Again was a weird call. Again, he killed it in Poor Heart. 46 Days continues to be one of THE songs I think for the 2009-2010 season, and helped to step up the energy even further. Tube/Character Zero were OK, but nothing which I thought about after the show.

Wilson > Light was great. Jam was terrific out of Light, the type of Jam you want in a sixth set. 20 Years Later I like, but don't think it is distinguishable. From Hood on was pure gold. Best stretch of the three nights. I thought Trey really stepped it up a notch after 20, using the looping/recording technology he has to great effect. At various points throughout the night, it seemed to me Trey would dip into the ocean for a minute or two, and then play out of it (I wanted to shed tears when it showed up, briefly, in the Reba, and then probably did shed one or two when it went quickly away). Almost trying to make the more non-whale affected playing more convincing, and using it as a stepping stone rather than a crutch (but I haven't listened to any of the shows, and it may be more present than I was aware). Besides the Reba, which is my favorite Phish, the Slave was my favorite song of the night by far. Perfect placement. And can't beat a Lizards in the encore spot.

All in all, after being there tough to place these shows in a context or rank with what's been played last June or last year. I would think the third night of the run is potential top ten shows (of 2009 on) material, but hard to make that call when you are in attendance. Trey really looked healthy, his tone was gorgeous (he did the Alpharetta Slave hold note twice, once in the Hood and once in the Slave that I remember, which just brings me to my knees). Page warmed up throughout the run, with him shining the third night, and Mike and Fishman sounded to me on par with where they were in June. Also, they were filming these three nights, and it has been my experience that Phish tense up when that is the environment, and I think that plagued them the first night or two. Add that to Trey having a new guitar to get used to, and it could have been disaster, but they exceeded my expectations, and that's all I can ask in the end.

From Hood on was pure gold.

Here's what I'll say about this show: I had the sense that Hood was next and really thought it would be perfect about ten seconds before Fish dropped into it. From that point on, the band really did no wrong. It was one of those magic nights when everything hooked up. Theme, 2001, Suzy, Slave... I was in heaven.

Then they come out for the encore and I was like "what if they play Lizards here?" BOOM! And 1st Tube was the best version I've heard from Phish or TAB in years, honestly.

What I'm trying to say is that this was the most hooked up and in the zone I have seen the boys since Big Cypress. It was really one of those "hose" nights.

Oddly, I have only heard up to Hood...

Guess I'd better get back to this show.

I actually said in the LST that I wished I was standing beside you when they busted into that.  You musta been psyched beyond belief, especially that they saved it for the encore slot.

The light jam was great. Impressive jam. I love that the boys finally took it out there and I liked where it went. The 20 years later was. Well. Eh. Cool song but standard. But that Hood was so awesome. I throughly enjoyed that. Also I like how Trey is finally stepping away from the Whale. During the 2001 when he's playing the chords. I liked how he wasn't just chomping away at them and whaling each chord. But pretty cool second set. I can't wait to see what t-ridebrings tonight. I hope they have more tastefull jams and less whaling.

the light jam is highly encouraging as was trey's playing in general.     i'm happy that everybody  attending these shows, for the most part, is still having fun, and that they really do seem to have IT on some nights or perhaps during parts of nights.    less whale, more jam could be a sign of great rest of the tour......sad i'm only catching one night at alpine, but they should really be hummin' at that time.

the light jam proves to me that trey can still get OUT THERE which is the best news all tour.

The Light jam was quite good. It wasn't transcendental mind-fuck good, but it was proof positive, as much as anything else we've heard recently, that they can still create brand-new music out of thin air. The post-Light standard raging really wound down to almost nothing before it built back up, forcing them to create sound organically rather than based on what came before it. I'd like to hear more of this approach; if nothing else I imagine it would serve as a good exercise and give them the confidence of realizing their jamming chops are really still quite strong when they want them to be.

holy gnarly testicle balls this Slave is the best thing.

Best Slave of 3.0, hands down.  So beautiful.  Reminds me of my favorite, 6/23/04, with the way Trey plays lead with chord arrpegiations 'n whatnot, and then Page comes in with his organ, and then Trey layyyyys into the ending licks.  Holy crap in a walmart bag.  That was awesome.  It was so smooth; it just.... coasted upwards.  Like....   yeah.  God damn.

Suzy was way good, too.  Total "Livin After Midnight" jam in there at the start of the reprise.

Oh, and 2001!!!!  Fishman!!!  Stop starting!!  But denied a bit by Trey....  Fish wanted that to expand, and bloat out more.  The 2nd jam on that shit was fuckin awesome.  Page was goin OFFFF on his Rhodes, and then I thought that maybe Fishman dropped a stick, but nope.  Unless he did, and then incorporated the resulting musical results into his resulting musical performance.

Gordo goin all "p-plunk p-plunk" with his nifty effect.  Great 2001.  I love it.  Phish is great.  Whoahhhhh PAY JORGAN!!!!!  DURING THE VERSE BUILD!!!!!  HOLY BAT SHIT IN A WENDY'S CUP!!!

heh. i love how everyone gives me a hard time for enjoying the one show i saw this summer. classy.
ser., you cant find anywhere that ive ever posted that i think p-mouth is  the "best" show or anything close to that statement. get over it.

as far as this show, i just got thru the SUzy for the 1st time and id have to give you that it is somewhat "redonkulous" i guess...not sure how one quantifies redonkulaity, but i'll definitely agree that it was  a lot of fun to listen to. And i must admit i'm real excited to hear the slave followup.

This show IS great. for the most part there is little to complain about, and overall yet another step in the right direction for the band imo. as far as playing devils advocate im still not  sure if i can say if there is SO much of a difference between this show and some of the other ones i like from 3.0 to say that it is a clear cut "best of 3.0", but most definitely it will be in the contention.

i'm real interested in hearing this one again, and also since ive already listened to the 2nd nite T-ride i'd like to hear the 1st nite T-ride to fill in the progression in between.

Sleep Again

Is this a toss away song on the paug?

Being the Page fan that I am, I dug the shit out of this seeing it live. Sleep Again is not as straight forward as it may seem when you sit down at or pick up your instrument to learn it (which I assume ALL paugers do prior to shitting on  :phish: songs old and new with red-faced abdominal strain). Page really shines on this version, as he did with the 8 version. Almost like a Strange Design category of song, where Trey wrote it, but it is really for Page.

Agreed.  I've always liked Sleep Again; TAB or otherwise, it's not a downer song in a setlist for me at all.

Agreed.  I've always liked Sleep Again; TAB or otherwise, it's not a downer song in a setlist for me at all.

well I prefer it to joy, let me die, summer of 89, show of life, Alaska, Time Turns Elastic.......so yeah, I like it. It's got a nifty rhythm hook.

I think this Light jam is a contender for best of 3.0. Seriously beautiful places were reached.

Know what else I love about this and the Cities jam? They just scream west coast.

Light from the Greek is the jam of the year so far IMO.

WHY IS NO ONE TALKING ABOUT THIS LIGHT. POSSIBLY THE JAM OF 3.0. IT IS EVERYTHING WE ASK FROM PHISH AND STANDS IN ANY ERA. IT IS PATIENT, MOVES THROUGH DIFFERENT DISTINCT MOVEMENTS, PLAYS WITH DYNAMICS LIKE WE HAVE YET TO HEAR IN 3.0. THERE ARE NO FLUBS, NO WHALE. TREY MILKS IT. MASTERFUL. GO BACK AND GIVE IT A CONCERTED LISTEN AND THEN TELL ME HOW THE FUCK YOU THINK CITIES IS EVEN REMOTELY CLOSE.

to back up your point, the cities was huge, like i said somewhere that's basically where the greek started for me, but the light is another dimension.  i just listened again to it last night and imo it's one of the best, if not the best, example of where phish could be headed...

I agree, with the exception of Alaska.  Why doesn't the Alaska jam get any love?  It was great in Hartford and the crowd went nutzo over it.

Not sure how you COULDN'T be psyched about the future of Phish after the progression of Hoods from this leg compared to either the 1st leg or last year.

Hoods SER were suffering... the whale was killing it, and Trey was flat out running out of creativity.

All 3 played this second leg were a step up, imo.

Yep.  Listened to this entire show today.
Good stuff going on every where.
Even listen to this Bag -- when has Trey been consistently nailing fast runs like this?  Not much in 3.0....
The Foam/Jibboo/Reba combo is also full of listening.
Light reaches "IT".
Hood/Theme has some incredibly thematic playing from Trey.
Suzy rocks out.
Lizards in the encore slot.

This is a great Phish show.

This LIGHT is the JOINT! Spaceship city.  This is what I (and I'm sure for a lot of us "we") salivate for.  :samurai:

The Hood is dark and dirty... Mike uses an  effect that takes it to devil land during the "thank you Mr. Minor" section. Love the sustained note loop that Trey throws on... has an awesome bending/throbbing wave to it. YES!

About to :music: for a 5th spin.

I gave a ticket away for this show in order to attend one of my best friends' weddings. I know I made the right call... but fuck... I'd give so much to have been able to hit this and still be there for my bro's day. Big time shit going on.

Ha, fuck, I am in that second picture. Growing out of the new Phish sound guys head is a guy with a white shirt, blue hat, and sunglasses. Almost directly above him (in the picture) is a woman wearing a pinkish/salmon colored dress with a light cream or yellow sweater (girl standing next to her is pulling her hair back). If you look directly in front of her in the row below, I am standing there with sunglasses on, and my neck bent foward. The entire crew I went to that show with is in that picture, I'll have to forward this on to them. Thanks!

HOLY SHIT!!!!!

ok yeah i suck at phish. so i listened to this show before and really liked it, but the shit that was gettin me the most was all the love for light.  I wasnt seeing it.  It only took me till now to find why this shit is so phat.

Everyone does awesome though the chorus then it seems to go to chaotic   and for the first time in a while trey stepped up and took everyone mellow right before 830.  awesomely relaxed trey, not to mention everyone else.  Then at 935 min i start getting real interested.  Mike starts dropping those "dirtty bubble" bombs for a little. but trey keeps shit mellow  its an awesome little theme hes got going there.  But then when i got to 1150 my mind starts getting twisted with awesome, and right at 1200 exactlly with mikes bombs and pages paser work actually in sync with trey and fish.  It felt like a bucket of awesome just got poured on me.  And its like that for the rest.  Why did it take me so long to get here?

nothing like drunk listening > drunk paugin.

Great theme indeed! I love this song so much - and it's one of those tunes that I've been judging the band's progress by. Apparently it ain't easy to make them sound like they used to...this one comes close!

Musically, these shows were very good...I think every night of the Baker's Dozen last summer is better than any night of this run, but whatever. Experiencing the Greek for 3 nights was beyond special. One of my overall favorite runs, for sure. Impossible to ignore how amazing every night of this run FELT in person.

Naw. This was the chillest run I've ever done. I stayed in the dorms like 100 yards from the stage. People waited in line all day to get in, but it was just a line. Like that was the lot scene. Hanging on line.

Jiboo was very TAB 1.0 in that Trey really got down and it wasn't short but it didn't go anywhere. I dig it though.

Just skimmed the whole thread and I'm psyched for this Reba.

We left for Telluride immediately after this set. At the time, my parents actually had a ski-home in Park City, UT, so we landed there early morning, crashed for a few hours then barreled forth.

Honestly, one of the greatest drives of my life. The sun rising in the middle of nowhere UT on a headfull, raging Phish the entire way, was something else.

Fuckin' Bat Country.

Sleep Again, Army Of One works on me.
