Title: Disco Biscuits Thread
Post by: disco on January 08, 2007, 01:26:13 AM
I figure if we can have a GD thread, then the bisco deserves a shot.

Found this one on the archive recently, great opener.
http://www.archive.org/details/db1999-04-07.flac16 (http://www.archive.org/details/db1999-04-07.flac16)

1: Helicopters -> Little Betty Boop, Eulogy, Bernstein and Chasnoff

2: The Very Moon -> Vassillios -> Run Like Hell -> Aquatic Ape -> Nughuffer -> Helicopters

E: A Night in Tunisia

the helix>boop is great, bout 50 minutes. The very moon clocks in over 30 has some solid moments, failry smooth transition as well. If nothing else, check out the first two songs. Anyone else like to recommend a show or two? I'm sure gainesvillegreen has a show or more he would offer up...

Perhaps a song or two.  But, I think what you are getting at is they were a phish tour band when they started.

the biscuits don't allow trading of their music pre-97. The did indeed cover a few phish tunes, here are a few setlists, just for auggie

1995-12-01 - 4000 Pine Street - Philadelphia, PA

Set two listed only.
Punch You In The Eye > Slipknot! , Pygmy Twylyte , Nughuffer , Barfly , Maze , The Other One , Soul Sacrifice , Mr. Don

1995-12-02 - Blarney Stone - Philadelphia, PA

1: Pat And Dex , In The Flesh > Run Like Hell , Barfly , You Enjoy Myself > Aceetobee > Nughuffer , You Never Give Me Your Money > Sun King > Mean Mr. Mustard > Polythene Pam > She Came In Through The Bathroom Window > Golden Slumbers > Carry That Weight > The End , Her Majesty
2: Possum , Eduardo The Penguin , Run Like An Antelope > Morning Dew > Run Like An Antelope > Mary Had A Little Lamb

1995-12-11 - Blarney Stone - Philadelphia, PA

Incomplete.
You Enjoy Myself 1, Rainbow Song

1 With 'Slipknot!' and 'Disco Bisquick' teases.

1996-02-13 - Campus Grille, Temple University - Philadelphia, PA
Sources

1: Peaches En Regalia , La Grange , Endo , Pygmy Twylyte , Pat And Dex , Nughuffer , In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed , Radiator , Run Like Hell , Barfly , Basis For A Day
2: In The Flesh , Mary Had A Little Lamb , You Enjoy Myself , Blue Monk , Dinah-Moe Humm , Mr. Don , Help On The Way > Slipknot! > She Came In Through The Bathroom Window , Texas Pussy , The Chicken , Rainbow Song , Maze , Jam 1 > Mike's Song , Soul Sacrifice

1 No lyrics but there's some distinct Barfly jamming going on. After Maze the tape is stopped or cut then restarts in the middle of this jam. It's either Jam > Mike's Song or Barfly Jam > Mike's Song or if you want to get way out there on a limb Barfly > Mike's Song.

1996-05-18 - Blarney Stone - Philadelphia, PA

Peaches En Regalia , Alumni Blues , The Woodser , Texas Pussy , Mr. Don , Run Like Hell , Harry Hood 1 > ??? , Nughuffer , Harry Hood 1 > La Grange , Punch You In The Eye > Radiator , Stone > South Of The Border Pussy > Trooper McCue

1 Dyslexic version. Instrumental.

1996-05-25 - Nate's Farm - Canton, MA

1: Basis For A Day , Alumni Blues , Trooper McCue , Peaches En Regalia > Pat And Dex , Radiator , Rainbow Song , Harry Hood , My Michelle , Mr. Don , Aquatic Ape
2: Stone > South Of The Border Pussy , Divided Sky , Pygmy Twylyte

My pick for a Phish cover by the db would be maze, they could take that one to new places. I'm not saying better places, just different places  :-P

They didn't start up with the trance jams until mid-98 so they were most likely straight covers.

plus that dyslexic Harry Hood sounds very very interesting.  more later...

the Disco Biscuits never treated ME inhumanely, PHAN.  lol.

i donno, i enjoy their music.  I think they're great, and quite talented.  I get down to the trance jams sober, not even blazed.  But thats probably just because i loooved Paul Van Dyk and cheesey ecstasy trance before i even heard of the Disco Biscuits (and when i still listened to death metal.  go figure)

sorry, as faux pointed out, the band really didn't start to develop their sound until mid-late 98 (check out the Helicopters from 12-31-98 for some good future sounds) so the asked that recordings of their music before it got to where they wanted it not be traded, as its not an accurate representation of what they want their fans to hear. Plus on 10-31-98 they got the JM-1000 or something like that, a new synth, that put the band on the path, more info here I'm sure,

I still think it is lame that there is a pre-97 trade embargo as well.

I think they're using that as an excuse while it's obvious that they're embarrassed by their heavy jam band roots.

That would be like phish Outlawing trading of pre-86 tapes because it's not representitive of how the bands sound would develop.

Frankly, it's retarded.

Well, how 'bout them apples!?!?

I remember very little other than the music was a waste of time for me personally in my humble opinion but I do respect othuz who like the DB but it really ain't for me yaknow but I's glad you likes it 'n shit.   :-D

Stage was smaller than all get out, room wasn't very big either (making the volume level gargantuan).  Tiny bar at the entry of the place I believe?  I was there with my wife (girlfriend at the time who lived there for a few months) and her friend.  I remember thinking, "Shit, I think I should just go.  But, they want to stay.  Hmmm...OK, I drove, so I can't leave...but I GOTTA GET OUT OF THIS PLACE!!".

I was in the minority.  People were going apeshit in that place that night.
Title: Re: Disco Biscuits Thread
Post by: fauxpaxfauxreal on January 10, 2007, 05:09:09 PM
Yeah.  That's my neighborhood hangout.  Here's a list of the bands I saw for the first time there...

Sound Tribe Sector Nine (back when they were "Sector Nine" not "Sound Tribe")
Lake Trout (during their Avant Garde free form period)
viperHouse (both with and without Heloise Williams)
Yonder Mountain String Band (opening for Snake Oil Medicine Show which was one of Mike's fave N.C. bands)
moe.
String Cheese Incident

I litterally live 5 minutes walking distance from the joint.

You're discription is spot on...during the day it was a restaurant.  They had a small (but posh...glossy wood, brass, etc.) bar at the very front....the stage was in the back of the room and it was boxy and small...the floor (if you remember) was like a faux carpeting made of a rubberish material.  They had a waitress that would circulate on the floor during the bands to bring you drinks.  I saw so many awesome shows in that joint it was retarded.  Jack Straw's sold itself to another bar "Jackalope Jack's".  I was at their last show which was in early 2000.  If you walked into there now, you'd be so surprised.  It's an "upscale" bar and grill with a great beer selection, and awesome karaoke on thursdays (me and my friends can be found there every thursday in the karaoke section).  They have Golden Tee, Shuffle Board, Pool Tables, Foosball and an internet juke box.  Good times.

The bar next door is called "The Philosopher's Stone" and is owned by the people that owned Jack Straw's.  The Philosopher's stone is where I go to hang out, watch football and see free hippy bands play.

Small effing world man.

And yes that 98 show was SUPER SICK.

you know...  i really wish i could trade places with you.  That show looks so sick, especially for the time period.  Because i really like their debut album, Uncivilized Area, because its not the whole tranced-out techno stuff they did later (i dont like full-blown electronica).  And this show is from that time period, meaning they must have played I-Man in its original arrangement, not the techno version they started to do later (and, extremely unfortunately if i might add, still do).

See, this is where i think the Disco Biscuits are cool.  Uncivilized Area is an awesome studio CD.  I love it.  I actually prefer the studio I-Man to any live version that ive heard yet.  They're a jamband who pulled off a great studio CD, and i give them props for that.  Although the songs that are on there have blossomed into huge mammoth anthems:  Morph Dusseldorph (check out the Wind at 4 to Fly version), Little Betty Boop, and Memphis.

the thing i like about early Disco Biscuits is that they had a ton of different style's of songs/music they wrote.  Like, Memphis doesn't sound a thing like I-Man or Morph Dusseldorph, and vice versa.  But i do like the stuff they've written after, like Basis For A Day, Pat and Dex, Little Shimmy In A Conga Line, Astronaut.

when i saw them for the first time (first time i ever WENT to a jamband show, i believe, and also the first time id ever even heard the Disco Biscuits) they encored with Astronaut > Run Like Hell > Astronaut, and the whole place went absolute APESHIT at that segue.  Soo smooth.  And well played.  I mean, it also had the added live element of their totally amazing light show (the best around now, easy.  maybe even better than Trey) where they kind of copied Pink Floyd, where it was all dark with white strobe light stuff going on between verses and stuff where they would illuminate the singer for each verse, going back and forth for each verse, leaving everything else in complete darkness.  Kinda hard to explain in words i guess.

but that brings up another thing i like about the Disco Biscuits.  I love that they cover tons of Pink Floyd.  I got Have A Cigar the last time they were here in May.  I donno, it could be because of the generational difference; Phish is the previous generation, covering songs from when they were kids, whereas the Disco Biscuits are from my generation, sort of i guess, because they only got started in the late 90's, and even had a big hiatus inbetween.

but i think a lot of people completely skip over the fact that they have lots of crazy prog-esque changes and odd time signature stuff, and that they can actually sing.  Songs like Kitchen Mitts (for prog craziness), Basis For A Day (harmony vocals), World Is Spinning (great harmony singing), and Story of The World.  Another cool thing i like about the Disco Biscuits is that their songs have a shitload of words to them, and ive never seen or heard them flub anything (granted my exposure isn't all thaaat broad)

anyway, im done.  time to play guitar before work

Heh gumbo, if you liked that show...you would have killed to see the shows I saw in the spring of 99....

Southeast in the Nine Nine was a great time.

Smoking bowls with the band in the early afternoon (morning for all of us) watching bad tv in days inns while marc would chastise Bernstein for not wearing deodorant.

Good times.

Some really get music came out of 99, 99 and 2002 are some of their better years. Check out 10/5/02 from the Haymaker Fesitval, or anything from Oct 02 for that matter. Another classic is the two night stand at the Mish in 02, july 26 & 27. Kinda like one big show, it just took them two nights to finish. Set 3 on night one is some of my favorite bisco.

PALLINDROME
a word or a group of letter that is read frontwards and backwards the same

these apply to music as well, for example the strange sounding stuff about a minute into Divided Sky is a pallindrome, the notes are played forward then backward

A>B>C>C>B>A

the biscuits also do this with their setlists, 7-26-02 is a good example:

2002-07-26 - Mishawaka Amphitheater - Bellvue, CO

1: Nughuffer > Helicopters 1, Triumph > Svenghali 1, The Tunnel > Spectacle
2: Jigsaw Earth 2 > Kitchen Mitts 3 > Above The Waves > Crystal Ball > Aquatic Ape 4 > Crystal Ball
3: Story of the World > King of the World > And the Ladies Were the Rest of the Night > Above The Waves > Bazaar Escape > And the Ladies Were the Rest of the Night > King of the World > Story of the World

1 Ending only. 2 With 'Cleaning Out The Closet' (Eminem) tease. 3 First time played. 4 Inverted version.

2002-07-27 - Mishawaka Amphitheater - Bellvue, CO

1: Spraypaint Victory 1 > Above The Waves 2, Shem-Rah Boo > I Remember When , Spacebirdmatingcall 3 > Vassillios 4 > Jigsaw Earth 2
2: Bernstein and Chasnoff > Sound 1 > Bernstein and Chasnoff , Plan B , I-Man > The Tunnel 2, Svenghali 5 > Triumph 2 > Whiskey River 6
E: Frog Legs > Helicopters 5 > Nughuffer 2

1 First time played. 2 Completes 7/26 version. 3 With 'The Thieving Magpie' (Rossini) tease. 4 Inverted version. 5 Dyslexic completion of 7/26 version. 6 Willie Nelson cover, first time played.

and if you look at both shows together, it has a very pallindrome like feel or "a tricky little riddle" as the band describes it

I went to a party in NY somewhere while on summer tour in '99 (after PNC I think) and guys from the Disco Biscuits were there... I had no idea who they were and did'nt really care but the party was a lot of fun.

Similarily I thought I would be open minded and checked out the Umphrey's/Bisco thing at Bonnaroo '06.  I was unimpressed by both bands.  I arrived mid-way through Umphrey's and left when tDB started a techno-inspired jam on The Who's Pinball Wizard.

Were the Disco Biscuits at one time exclusively a Phish cover band, or did they just play a few Phish songs?
Title: Re: Disco Biscuits Thread

Im almost 100% positive they just played some Phish songs, just as somethin to do.  Ive never heard anything anywhere about them starting out as a "cover band" proper.  Most bands start out only playing covers anyway.  We did.  Its really the only way to figure out what you're good at and what your musical abilities and potential are.

Well, all i know about that is from what ive read here.  I had never known about the no-trading policy for stuff pre 1998(?).  I just knew there were never any tapes from those shows, unfortunately.  Try discobiscuits.net   its got everything you could ever want there; its exactly like phish.net except with more cool features

sorry to hear that man, the 10-5-02 performance is a truly great one. With the db it does help to know whats going on. To be able to tell the diff btwn improv and scripted material. Helps when they start inverting shit.

Inverted, improv or composed; if thats a high height for that band, I've heard enough.

Man, no love for TDB on this board, although I'm not suprised.

I love bisco, just went and saw the 28th and 29th out east before flying down to ATL. I have heard all the nye run and they are playing  ridiculous right now. Although, if you went to haymaker '02 and didn;t like it you never will "get" it, but thats ok.

Most of bisco was huge dead/phish fans as welll. I have seen brownie @ terrapin and I know he was at brooklyn and plenty of other shows. Its interesting, because in one interview brownie talked about phish and when he stopped really liking them, which was in '97!. The reason he started losijng interest in 97 was because of the funk and he missed the straight rage/rock circa 95 that was their bread and butter at the time. This schocked me because this is one of the first people, none the less musicans I know of that love phish and despise 97, my favorite year.

My roomate and I were wondering the other day, when would it be "ok" in the eyes of the fans, for bands that wee all see to cover phish. There is obviously some time that needs to pass before it nots akward but I know that people like Keller are supposedly already covering shit like stash. When would it bo cool for another band to cover phish?

sorry, as faux pointed out, the band really didn't start to develop their sound until mid-late 98 (check out the Helicopters from 12-31-98 for some good future sounds) so the asked that recordings of their music before it got to where they wanted it not be traded, as its not an accurate representation of what they want their fans to hear. Plus on 10-31-98 they got the JM-1000 or something like that, a new synth, that put the band on the path, more info here I'm sure,
www.discobiscuits.net  (http://www.discobiscuits.net)

yeah, it wasnt until i got my kickass distortion pedal, that my band started playing
original material, too.
IMO, we kick  ALOT more ass these days.

no worries rj, there just not your cup of tea. For me bands like UM, widespread, DMB, Yonder and many more just aren't for me, they are decent musicians, just not for me. I appreciate the fairly open discussion here  :-D . One thing is for sure they have definitely brought a new approach to building setlists, whether they succeed or fail is in the eye of the beholder.

Ya, but I can remember seeing keller play phish tunes back in the day.  For instance, iirc, I saw him play Cars, Trucks Buses in '01 at All Good, and play Stash in '02 at the Recher.  More recently, I saw him play Contact in '05, and Runaway Jim>Antelope in '06.  Thats all I got off the top of my head.......

After further research, he's been playing fluffhead since '94.  So I guess what I am saying is, I am ok with bands covering phish tunes.  Keller always put his own spin on everything too.  If you couldn't tell, I'm a big fan.

I was gonna bust on you referring to 02 & 01 as 'back in the day' for Keller but you redeemed yourself with your followup. Keller is a perfect example, a touch older than myself, he has seen his share of GD & Phish and makes no attempt to hide it. His Stella Blue last month was sweet.
Title: Re: Disco Biscuits Thread
Post by: Blaise on January 16, 2007, 04:19:10 PM
not a huge keller fan, although I think the reason most people don't mind him covering these songs is because its just him doing it, not a whole band trying to recapture the original essence of a song. I know that the breakfast has also been covering yem for many years, I was more or less wondering if in the next years other bands, ones we already know and listen to, might open up their catalog to the potentiality of playing phish?

Yes, I guess I refer to it as "Back in the Day" because those, for me, were the days.  I had very little responsibility when compared to my life today. I was on tour some.  Whereas now, I just wouldn't have the time for it.  Recieving my announcement for my 10 year high school reunion this May isn't helping matters either.  I guess I have just been feeling a bit old lately.     But you are right RJ, '01 and '02 are hardly "Back in the Day"  Feel free to flame away.  I have thick skin.
