Title: The Bonnaroo Superjam this year is.... f**in' weird:
Post by: mattstick on May 07, 2014, 02:22:38 PM

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/bonnaroo-books-janelle-monae-robby-krieger-skrillex-for-superjam-20140507

Bonnaroo Books Janelle Monae, Robby Krieger, Skrillex for Superjam
Three eclectic collaborative jams are scheduled for 2014 fest

For many festivalgoers, Bonnaroo Music Festival peaks with its annual Superjam tradition, which unites a group of disparate artists for a unique, one-off stage collaboration. This year's insane lineup could be the wildest to date: The most star-studded Superjam features Skrillex, Janelle Monáe, the Doors' Robby Krieger, the Grateful Dead's Mickey Hart, Thundercat, Warpaint, Chance the Rapper, Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley, Zedd and more.

There are three Superjams booked for the 2014 fest – and while the other two aren't as jaw-dropping in terms of sheer eclecticism, they're still bound to turn some heads.

The second jam features guitar whiz Derek Trucks with special guests Andrew Bird, Chaka Khan, Taj Mahal, Ben Folds, Susan Tedeschi, drummer Adam Deitch, guitarist Eric Krasno, Los Lobos frontman David Hidalgo and legendary session drummer James Gadson. The Bluegrass Situation Superjam (hosted by actor-banjo ace Ed Helms) features Lonesome Trio, Dierks Bentley, Sarah Jarosz, Lake Street Dive, the Black Lillies, Shovels & Rope, The Lone Bellow, Robert Ellis, Della Mae, Bryan Sutton and Yonder Mountain String Band banjoist Dave Johnston.

Last year's Superjam found My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James collaborating with John Oates (and guests R. Kelly and Alabama Shakes' Brittany Howard) for an unpredictable set featuring covers of John Lennon, Prince and Sly and the Family Stone.

Reflecting on the set afterward, James told Rolling Stone, "You just kind of walk off from that. . . literally feeling like you just won the Super Bowl or something because it was such a battle. . . The whole thing was such a fucking battle. . . there's so much involved in trying to make it work. And then when it actually does work, you really just feel so victorious."

Bonnaroo 2014 takes place June 12th to 15th in Manchester, Tennessee. More details can be found at the fest's website.

I know.  Cory Feldman has apparently squandered too much money to get a proper haircut.

Although, he'll probably call the pizza dude.

Anyone else miss when this thing used to be a secret?

Also lets just skip to the real point and just say stupid.   As is to say, Skrillex makes that lineup stupid.

The #1 played The Doors song on Spotify is called Breakn' A Sweat.

It has almost twice as many plays as any song on there (Riders on the Storm is most played I think).  15 million plays.

I know The Doors pretty well, and had never heard of this.  How is that possible?  I've slacked for a few years I guess, but this is shocking.

Put it on play.

I thought my head broke.  It's a Skrillex song, and the first one I actually know I am listening to.

What the fuck is this "noise"?

for people who like music that pushes boundaries and gets weird, I find it incredibly lame that you all hate on Skrillex.

You like the Grateful Dead, but you hate Skrillex?  Skrillex is taking Space and putting into a dance music format.  Shit is catchy and creative as hell.

Actually, maybe I shouldn't be surprised.  When I saw Skrillex, the most musically-close resemblance it made to me was to the metal days of my youth....  the hard, aggressive slamming energy.  It isn't peace-y love music.  Its fucking wild, aggressive, extreme music.

But for people who like the anti-musical noise of '92-'95 Tweezer/Bowie/Mike's Song cacophony, I'd expect a lot of you to at least recognize and respect the risk Skrillex is taking in making music like that.

For you all to say he's just making noise is to equate yourself to the people who say Phish just noodles.  You guys are better than that.  Don't be hypocrites, mannn

Skrillex.

Arranging a bunch of sound-effects in a rhythmic pattern, I don't consider "pushed boundaries".  Its 21st Century "Beat-Boxing", ie. make a bunch of sounds to a beat.

But I sometimes dig music like that, so I listened again (to the Doors track above).  For music that has infinite potential (number of samples/sounds usable), the music is really shallow.  Just a beat and some sound effects.  No ambience, no counterpoint in the bass line, no multi-rhythms...

I would listen to more, but the first serving didn't do it for me...

Terry

I'm a huge electronic music fan and Skrillex FUCKING BLOWS DONKEY COCKS MY FRIEND. Sorry, but he's the "pop" music of techno. And by pop, I mean asinine vapid garbage produced for the ignorant masses. That said, I do agree that great techno grooves that morph and employ elements of improv give me similar feelings to listening to jam bands or jazz, they transport me, they hypnotize me, and they make me dance. In fact, I'll be seeing Ritchie Hawtin tomorrow night, here in Montreal, when he puts on his muti-tech event ENTER.

On the one hand, the Eleanor Rigby cover is very cool
On the other, the music doesn't match the dark mood of the lyrics.
I still like it, though

I saw Kamasi late night at Jazzfest this year. Wasn't really sure what to expect other than awesome and he surely delivered. This guy has climbed the ranks mighty fast and for good reason.

I still haven't taken the time to explore this guy and check the hype, but from the short clips I've sampled, I think I'd have to be in the right mood to check out The Epic in it's entirety.

Yeah... I've never even listened to the whole thing. Def a little hard to get into at points. His live band is a totally different thing. Much groovier.

I took it to mean his short list of current rotation of albums he's listening to on the reg.

Pretty bold title though.

I usually keep a list of albums on my phone that I want to pick up on vinyl so I don't miss one on the off chance I find it at a decent price.
Then I have a short list of those albums that I must have. The Epic makes that list, I just haven't gotten around to buying it yet..
