shn to mp3 static

I'm having an odd problem.
I have this source
http://db.etree.org/shninfo_detail.php?shnid=915

Checksums verify, shn files play fine.
When I convert them to mp3, all files are pure static.

I'm using Trader's Little Helper, and all other sources are converting just fine.
Any ideas?

nab

Hard to tell from the text file but the fileset might be 48 khz as opposed to 44.1, which is cd standard and the limit of most mp3 player playback.

disco

listen to them in shn  :-P

It's not @ 48K if it's tracked out for CDs and is "PCP compliant".

I was able to successfully convert the shns to wav,
then from wav to mp3

Then, being curious, I used shorten to convert one of the wav files to shn.
The new shn had a different md5 than the original, which is probably expected.
However, when I converted this new shn to mp3, it too was nothing but static.

Is there a problem with the original wav files?

rowjimmy

shn > wav > shn
should not result in different md5s (unless the original shn files do not have seek tables... this may be the case as the original seed was from 99.)

Marmar

no....

if there was a problem with the wav file, you'd have a problems with the wav......

more than likely, there is a problem with your encoder....

When you re-encoded to SHN, did you append a seek table?.....did the original have seek tables?.....There might lie the answer to your troubles.....double check how you have your frontend configured.....as RJ said

The difference in the md5 was the seek tables being appended.
If I convert the wav using "shorten -v2", then they match the originals.
However, I still get pure static when converting it to mp3.

This is the only show I've had this problem with.
Is it possible to create wav files in such away
that the resulting shn cannot be converted to mp3?
I guess I'm wondering if this was somehow done intentionally.

I don't know a whole lot about this stuff.
Maybe someone else could play with this
and see if they have the same problem.

Probably but the wav files wouldn't work.
Have you tested them with shntool?

wizard

Well, "shntool -h" doesn't help much :)

Exactly how should I test it?
As I said, this is unfamiliar territory for me  :?

I'd save a bit of aggrevation and try another encoder like dbpoweramp.  I'd recommend that one anyway.

No....and believe me, if it was possible to do this, I wouldda been the first one to do so.....

The only way would be by using an odd sample rate (but then mkw won't convert it to shn either) or somehow corrupting the file header info....which again, would render the file useless.....

HINT: Try another encoder....

:frustrated:

I had forgotten about dbpoweramp.
I used to have a purchased version of that.
That got lost with most everything else a while back.
Yeah, I really liked that program.
I doubt it would make a difference though,
since both apps are just front-ends for lame.

Oh well... I have what I need via shn>wav>mp3
It was odd enough I thought I should post about it.
Could be an interesting mystery to solve for someone
more knowledgeable about these things...

Marmar

dude...I'm tellin you as an audio engineer, it's your converter.....

and...I may be mistaken, but isn't mkwACT set up for BLADE?.....there's an encoding option there too....the scale.....try playin with that....it has to do with the level precision on determining what is clipping and what isn't.....hmmm.....could it be the source of your static?......

In the past when I had this problem, changing this value would usually (7 out of 10 times) fix the issue......

Both BladeEnc 0.94.2 and Lame 3.97 (Traders Little Helper)
produce files of pure static when encoding the .shn file.

Remember, this is only happening with this particular show.
And if I decompress to .wav, the wav files will properly encode to mp3.
