It might take another month until we get the second part of the last season over here, but I can wait. I was really disappointed by every episode after the first of the sixth season so far. Carmela's trip to Paris was one of the most boring plot threads in any medium, ever. What a complete waste of fucking time that was. And nothing really important happened at all during the sixth season. I'll watch the last episodes just because I've invested too much time into this show to not see it through, but I've really lost most my interest in it.

1st episode last night was alright, the drunken brawl was the best part of it.  Liked it also because most of it took place up in my neck of the woods.

good episode, i liked the brawl too.  i had a strange feeling those golf clubs would have come in handier than they did, though... hehe

sad to see this series wind down i suppose, but they seem to be doing it well.  unlike many others, i enjoyed last season a lot.  i think there was a LOT of character development and high tension created by everything that went on.

just saw this, thought it applies to this thread as well:

Quote10 Million Fans Killed Off In Sopranos Season Premiere
April 9, 2007 | Issue 43•15

NEW YORK—The writers of the HBO series The Sopranos took another daring storytelling step by killing off 10 million fans during the seventh season's premiere episode Sunday night.

"This was definitely a bold choice, one that producers of the show would have never thought of making five years ago," said New York Times television critic Virginia Heffernan, who noted that the move was hinted at in a season-five episode in which Tony dreamt he was riding a horse through his house. "But now that I look back, this was strongly foreshadowed throughout all of last season."

Industry insiders predicted that the show's producers would try to bring at least some fans back for the series finale, which may come as early as May.

I thought Tony was going to make a run for the automatic machine gun Bobby gave him :-o
Bobby was an idiot in saying how he was scared of DNA linked evidence and there he was leaving behind hallowed point bullets and dropping his own piece.

Pauli was lucky he didn't end up as Marlin chum.

edit

I thought it was interesting how the writers focused on a struggling Asian student at Jr's rehab place in light of last week's shooting.  Obviously they had no idea about Cho but interesting similarity nonetheless.

I was waiting for those Cubans to put a hurting on them two.
The writers must be going with more plot less gratuitous violence.
It's been working thus far. Gets you thinking and keeps you guessing.

i just watched the three episodes.

really liked the opener. the calm before the storm. out on that peaceful lake, but so ominous throughout.
did you notice the little girl talking about ducks? a little connection to the very first episode with tony seeing the ducks in his pool. will he die in his pool?

doesn't look good for bobby or christopher. and paulie is certainly a loose cannon at this point. i wonder just how he's going to fuck up?

i like the way these episodes are so focused on the past. the old photos, paulie talking about the old times. seems like everyone is talking only about the past. tony's dropped gun, which doesn't nail him-- yet. then the unburied body from 25 years ago-- which again, doesn't nail him. what from his past IS going to fuck him?

I think that it ended the way that it was there was so much speculation as to how it was going to end and everyone was making such a big deal how it was going to end that what was actually show left it up to the viewer to decide, did the guy in the member's only jacket come out shooting, did the blacks guys who walked in just before Meadow kill Tony or did nothing happen and life just went back to normal.  I vote for the last.

...or will we find out in a full length feature film someday?

another thought i had was maybe a HUGE comeback in 5 to 10 years.

like a 2nd generation version to find out what the younger characters are doing with their lives and the family business.

..like (obviously A.J.) and the baby grand twins in the back...

I think many were dissapointed with the ending to the serise. But what we must remember is that show is called "The Sopranos" its about the Soprano family. Tony is the main character and he happens to be the boss of the crime family that runs new jersey. All the Mafia stuff is just fluff for the show. This whole last episode focused mainly on Tony, his wife, his sister, and his kids. He also finally went to face junior. The way I see it, the director just took a section out of the life of Tony Soprano, maybe he ended his "section" in a bad spot....or was it the best spot?

i thought it was brilliant. who got whacked at the end? WE DID. david chase whacked the audience. i love it.

the whole show has always been about denying us what we want.

and it's always been about how people never change. they just drove that home all the way through this episode. A.J. was suicidal over the world at large, the only character in the show who really paid any attention to a world outside jersey, and then at the end-- his parents bribe him with a new car and a job working on a crap movie funded by porn producing gangsters. meadow tells tony she's being a lawyer to protect people like tony, because she's seen him dragged away in handcuffs so often, instead of being just another doctor. paulie left sitting in front of the pork store, with no life at all but to serve tony, just like always. in the presence of a shrink, tony reflexively starts talking about his issues with his mother-- right where he was at the start of season one.

lots of awesome little touches. A.J. saying how grear bob dylans' 'it's allright ma i'm only bleeding is' just before his car blows up and the cd melts. a fiery SUV eating bob dylan's music. there's an image.

the FBI guy who feels like he's on tony's side.

that last scene was great. they built so much tension just by cutting to a couple of suspicious characters entering the diner, and meadow strangely unable to park her car. the cheesy journey song with the lyrics 'when a movie never ends it goes on and on and on...." and then, we got whacked. what happens when a character gets whacked? they end, but everyone else in the show just goes back to their lives.

i was glad Tony survived, well in my mind he did.  alot of theorists are saying it was T's death thats why the screen went black and silent.  it goes back to tony and bobbys conversation on the lake earlier in the season.  Also whats up with that stupid cat?  Big Pussy reincarnated?

Excellent review!

Agreed, good summation. (is that even a word.)

I was pissed last night because I wanted to see an all-out with NY. But then i started thinkning about the ending, and realized that the show was never about the Mob. It was about an insecure little boy who just happened to run North Jersey.

At the end of the show, Tony was in the diner waiting. At that point he had no enemys, we dont know if he was gonig to testify, but in essence NY was done. But yet, no matter how great is professional or personal life was going, he always had to worry and look over his shoulder.

Things dont change for anyone.

I would hate to see a spin-off series because AJ is a douche.

is that your prediction or a vote?

also:
it's great to read all of your different thoughts and reactions to the episode. i love how almost everyone here (and that i've spoken with) has had a different opinion on the outcome. that right there is a tell-tale sign of a great piece of classic art. plenty of food for thought, as the entire series was from the beginning.

throughout the entire episode there was no shortage of symbolism, anticipation, and drama. complex issues were present (as always) but at the same time i felt a simplicity theme. at first i was a little stunned, but as i had some time to let it sink in i thought it was a classy way to go.

well done.

although ultimately the ending will necessarily remain ambiguous, after further thought i'm convinced that tony is dead.

in the first episode of the season, with tony and bobby in the boat, they talk about being killed, and bobby says something about how you never see it coming and everything just goes black. and tony recalls this conversation in the penultimate episode lying on the bed.

then there's the bizarre edit i forgot about at the start of the diner scene. it's right out of 2001, actually. tony looks into the diner-- we are looking at tony's face-- then we cut to what he's seeing: himself, seated at the table. that's a very weird thing to do, so why? because for this scene, we the audience are now tony.

the tension builds, and finally, abruptly, tony looks up to see who's coming in the door-- we assume meadow, but we don't see who it is-- and we cut to black. not to the credits, but a solid ten seconds of black silence. as i said before, WE have been whacked, but in this scene, we have been set up to be tony.

so tony's dead. the whole show was about him. it was, effectively, all from his perspective, it was all his world, and the only way his world can end is when he ends. for him, and by extension for us, there is nothing more. there is no more sopranos.

nice thoughts cactusfan.  I was thinking thru that one myself, about the conversations about death and things just going black.

But then on peyote later on in the season, he saw sunrise in the desert and shouted out "I get it!"  And then later revealing that he saw something and figured something out.

Last year the coma.  He was a salesman being drawn into the house where everyone else was (death).

Both of these 2 images show that there was something else beyond death, other than black.  So I'm sorting that out.

I do appreciate the ending now after almost 24 hours.  This was something that no one expected and unique.

word, nice review bro.

although I was expecting a hit on Tony's family I did enjoy the finale in that it leaves the door open.  Sil is still alive, Pauli, Tony, it wouldn't take much to get it back.
It was cool to see AJ transcend out of his depression esp. when his cheesey Yellow SUV burnt, the way he described it to his therapist was he was finally realizing change on a few levels.

My season highlight was Tony high on mescaline in the desert watching the sun rise and yelling, "I finally get it!"

Give it a couple of years but this saga isn't over with.

that was a nice moment with AJ and his therapist, after which he decides he really has to DO something. so he decides to join the army. and then-- just like his dad, sure he can see what he SHOULD do, but when presented with the easy way out-- a new car, a meaningless job-- he jumps right in, and there we see him on the sofa, just like his dad, with his underage girlfriend laughing his ass off at clips of karl rove and gwb dancing like assholes.

what do you make of tony yelling "i get it!"? seems to me it was just more blatant self-delusion. he gets what? that murdering chris was okay, and that now his luck has changed, as evidenced by his winning on roullette in the scene just prior? the last episode shows that tony gets exactly nothing aside from self-preservation.

i don't see any likelihood of a return to this show ever. as i wrote above, i think the last scene is tony's death, and that the very point is that we won't be seeing where any of these loose threads wind up. when it's over, it's over.

i took the "i get it" scene to mean that tony somehow found out (through peyote) that there IS indeed something more (or an after life).

The ending was cool, couldn't figure what to make of it, but the whole "audience getting whacked" fits well with the show. I liked how the last episode seemed to bring everything full circle, while at the same time showing us that nothing really changed at all. Tony's therapy never went anywhere, AJ, with his depression and talk of joining the army and making the difference, bribed with a new car and a meaningless job working on a crappy movie, the whole gang war with Phil just ending.

Another thing I noticed in retrospect, which I don't think was mentioned was the fact that Hunter was brought back, for ONE scene, which basicly showed how little the sopranos had changed, Carmella is suprised to hear hard partying Hunter from season 1, is now a second year med-student, which just makes you realise that the Soprano kids are pretty much where they always were. Meadow still isn't entirely sure what she wants to study, AJ, who still acts a lot like he did in Junior high, even his bought of depression wasn't new, considering his whole Nitzche phase from way back...

Anyways, good fuckin' episode.

ok, so i'm a lurker but i really want to talk about this 'Made in America' episode..  I have watched it 4 times now, and I keep thinking about it a lot.  I recorded it and didn't get to watch it until Tuesday.  By that time, I had already accidentally read a few spoilers (they were impossible to miss), and the references to the 'Members Only' jacket had me thinking about Season6's first episode, titled 'Members Only'.  That was the one where Junior shoots Tony, and leads into the next episode where Tony dreams about becoming salesman, Kevin Finerty.  A trippy near-death dream episode.  So that had me already wondering if it was going to be a near death/dream episode.

And I totally think it was.  The whole episode is trippy and dreamy (for example, the airplane going overhead swerving, then the train sounds suddenly stopping when they are in the sitdown.  the return of Hunter for a few seconds, and she is a medstudent (hunter would not have been a med student!) and the people throwing up after phil's head getting crushed, the 1 second scene when tony tells carmella that AJ wants to enlist, and of course Tony watching himself at the restaurant.)  After watching it a few times, I am totally convinced that Tony has died, but I think that he was killed after he fell asleep at the end of the previous episode (he never saw it coming).

The entire final episode is a dream that Tony takes before he finally dies at the very end of the episode.  He dreams this after he gets shot at the end of the previous episode (or should I say 'when he gets shot, after the previous episode ends').  Camella is happy, AJ becomes enlightened, Meadow gets a super fat job offer, Phil acting goofy with babies then getting his head crushed, AJ says, "you are in a dream!", agent harris helping Tony (and the creepy scene when he finds out that Phil has been killed - he slaps the desk and says, "were going to win this thing").   The feds were listening in on Tony's conversation (he had that paranoid thought one last time) Then they go to AJ's psych and she is smiling at Tony as he starts going off about his mother one final time.  And the cat (because it was staring at Christopher, I wonder if it has some reference to Adrianna?  And Silvio getting the pedicure (lol)- that was wierd. When the SUV blows up, the Dylan music starts melting in slow motion as if it were a tape.

The first time I watched this episode, I was convinced it was a dream.  I just thought that at the end, Tony would wake up in the hospital with his family around him (sunday night, drudge report said, "HBO chooses life", so i thought tony had lived.  Drudge also said everyone was mad at the ending- I was thinking that everyone was mad with the episode becuase it was a lame episode...  it turns out that people are mad becuase they just don't get it!) Anyway, instead of Tony waking up with his family around him , it faded to black (or should i say, it slammed black darkness in your face!).

That Journey song is now going through my head.  When AJ reminds Tony to remember the good times is one of the most beautiful moments in Sopranos history.  The episode that Tony takes peyote was amazing, this season was my favorite.  I am totally blown away by the final episode.  I laughed, I cried.

RIP, Tony Soprano

RIP, Tony Soprano

what do you make of tony yelling "i get it!"? seems to me it was just more blatant self-delusion. he gets what?

I think he understands what Chris had said about stopping and smelling the roses.  It showed for the first time maybe besides the birth of his children, how profound nature/beauty can be.  It was another step towards enlightenment for Tony.

ok, so i'm a lurker but i really want to talk about this 'Made in America' episode..

If you really want an in depth and knowledgeable take on the final episode check out this guys thesis. It makes a lot more sense than anything I have ever heard.

I would have to side with this guy. Proppas to him for throwing out this view.-todd

good analysis by bob harris, who writes an entertaining blog.

i actually wrote a very long analysis beyond what i've posted here, also arguing that it's abundantly obvious tony got whacked, but harris gets at a lot of points i overlooked.

my argument stemmed from something harris talks around throughout his piece, which is that david chase spent an awfully long time creating his finale, and it seems awfully unlikely that all that careful planning was to play a joke on the audience, to just cut things off with the point being, 'hey! there is no end! ha ha!'

but since the cut to black was so very jarring when it happened, all analysis has come from the starting point that chase tricked us-- and then people go from there trying to figure out what depth was in the trick.

if we instead start with the premise that chase wasn't trying to trick us, that he was in fact very carefully setting up tony's death to comport with the notion that when you get whacked, you won't see it coming, everything will just go black, then all the clues point obviously to tony being dead. in that case, chase did a brilliant job. he did everything exactly the way you'd do it if that's what you were setting up.

i'm not in the know... or even care... but i heard that all the suspicious peeps that were in the dinner were in previous episodes and had beef with tony in the past... therefore the assumption is that there were multiple assasins present.

people floated that theory, but it is incorrect. none of the people in the diner had been in previous eps.

Bump.

Apparently. I'm almost ten years late to the party, but I'm just finishing up this series.  I'm in the middle of season 6.

Loved the first season. Enjoyed most of the rest...kind of less as it went on..... but now, the end of season 5 -> 6

What in the F is happening with the directing/production/editing/dialogue etc.? It feels like an entirely different show.

The pacing, the story line. They are cramming things in.. and with very little connection to anything... its weird.

I recently rewatched the entire series after not having seen it since it first came out and I agree.  It took a turn for the worse towards the end.  Still and amazing show, but it kind of went off the rails a bit there in the last season or two.

It defintely lost me by the time Tony was in a super boring coma for five episodes or whatever.

Yeah def seems like they lost some writers or just like an idea of where they wanted the show to go for the last two seasons. Still enjoy the show immensely though.
