Title: Fuck4paug
Post by: redrum on July 06, 2010, 01:52:36 PM
For those that don't know about this yet:

On 07/01/10 in the "Live Fucking Setlist Thread" the theme or word of the night was "Fuck". Not sure how many F-bombs were actually dropped in it's 42 pages, but there were fucking plenty. Someone should count them all.

On 07/02/10 in Charlotte, Phish played the bustout to end all bustouts: "Fuck Your Face" was played for the first time in over 23 years (the last -- and only -- known performance was on 4/29/87 or 1,413 shows ago).

there was a Fuck Your Face sign in Raleigh.  My friend who was in the pit told me about over the weekend.  So no, they didn't play that song because of this board.

i've seen more request posters at 3.0 shows for songs that haven't been played than ones that have. so no, that's just one opinion.

But those are for other songs that get played.  A Fuck Your Face poster is going to catch the eye of the band more so than most signs.  It's not an opinion.  It's reality.  It's foolish to think that posting a bunch of fuck yous on a message board translates to the ultimate bust out.  I don't see the connection at all.  None of you were referencing that song or even discussing it in that thread.  the whole concept of that thread was to be a bunch of dicks to each other.  How is that Fuck Your Face?  It's not.  sorry, I know the bubble is popped here, but that's the truth.  They saw a sign and went out of their way to play that tune.

Why would they read the LST thread though?  No offense, but they are just same people (me included) cracking retarded inside jokes every time.  It's an awesome way to spend one's night when they aren't at the show, but it's hardly a beacon of knowledge or insight with regards to the actual show.  So to me, it just seems ludicrous to think that has any influence on the band, and why wouldn't they take many of the more well thought out ideas to heart within this board?

You guys are confusing cause with correlation.

No!! That's not what we are referring to Sophist... We are referring to the actual call of Fuck your Face, Vultures and 1 more song all called in the same LST on 7/1... They played 3 unusual songs that were are called in that same LST on 7/2... Amazing coincidence...

i'm not saying it was DEF this board that caused them to randomly bustout one of the rarest songs in their
catalog.
but i know it's not out of the question & it's absolutely worth discussing even if we had nothing to do with it.
you & i both now there are people on this board that personally know the band & many people in the organization.

it may have been the request poster, it may have been the board, it may have been both, it may have neither.

I'd say yes.

It can't only be about the date since last played.  The quality of, and importance of the song to the band's songbook is more important to me.  I'd put 2/28/03's Destiny Unbound ahead of Fuck Your Face.  FYI McGrupp - I was not at 2/28/03.

Also, the fact that they're making a conscious effort to dust off songs from the wayyyy back catalog kind of diminishes the recent "bust outs" to me.

Last night in Charlotte, Phish played the bustout to end all bustouts: "Fuck Your Face" was played for the first time in over 23 years (the last -- and only -- known performance was on 4/29/87 or 1,413 shows ago).  Interestingly, Phish also performed an a cappella version of "Proud Mary" during the "YEM" vocal jam.  "Mary" was the previous longest-gap record holder when it was played on 3/1/03 for the first time since the very first Phish show (12/2/83 or 1,364 shows). Needless to say, excitement is running high for the last two shows of the tour in Alpharetta. Can "Prep School Hippie" or "Punch Me in the Eye" be far behind?

guess i shoulda used the quoting option the first time.  :frustrated:

Destiny was played heavily throughout 90-91 though, so there's tons of folks that were seeing them back then that caught it.

This was a song that practically no one had seen before, and even if they had who can remember since the date is totally unconfirmed.

As one of Mike's earlier compositions, I'd say it's historically significant too, and certainly an interesting tune as well.

So all that adds up to a bustout of the highest order in my book.

Yes.  Are you jonesin' to hear Minkin, And So To Bed? or He Ent To The Bog?
I would appreciate it if they played them.  Part of me is a huge stats nerd, it's what I love about the band, that they have these rare songs.  Are they the best songs in the catalog?  No.  But I like having them as a possible option, and I appreciate the significance of a bust out like FYF.

As a tune i like it though, I think FYF is a cool song.  I dig the main riff and I thought they raged the fuck out of it in Charlotte.

i havent listened to fyf yet, but it is a pretty big bustout.

that said, as far as significance in the scene, i gotta agree w/ mattstick that destiny unbound @ 2/28/03 was the biggest phish bustout ever.

you ask anyone who was on tour in the last 90's what the song they wanted them to bring back was, and it was destiny, destiny, destiny.  it had lore, it had hype, it had a reputation.  second only to a narrated gamehendge, in my opinion.

Title: Re: Fuck4paug
Post by: sophist on July 06, 2010, 03:23:11 PM
I get that.  I'm not diminishing that either.  796 shows is a huge gap, but FYF was 1413 show gap.  I think that speaks volumes, at least in the sense that they brought something out of the wood work that was seemingly impossible to return from a statistical standpoint.  It was/is much more likely for a song like Destiny to be played again.  I was just as stoked to get my first Destiny on 7/3 as I was about FYF.  The only difference though is the pure shock of it, and I guess that is akin to what happened to people at 2/28/03, it must of been shocking.

Sitting at home for both... I was more shocked by the FYF bustdown (despite having called for it earlier in the week.)

The likelihood of them ever playing that song again was @ 0% a week ago.

The ultimate bust-out would be Scarlett Begonias->Fire->Fire on the Mountain (w/ one verse of "Fire up the Ganja"). It's not an original, but it would tear the place to shreds.

Absolutely. I'm still up in the air on this. I believe it's POSSIBLE, but unlikely that any of them are reading the paug. That being said, the synchronicity was insane between both the "Live Fucking Setlist Thread" and the "Love Setlist Thread" from a couple nights later when half of us were all cozy faded and throwing around free love like it was Summer '69 at in upstate NY.

I think you guys have their motivation all wrong.

They clearly saw the thread, realized that we were having more fun than everyone at the show combined, and tried to recreate the unbridled rawefucksomeness for their paying audience.

Also, I didn't see it mentioned elsewhere, but this is obviously why they played RATM too.  They didn't have enough time to work up a whole show's worth of songs prominently featuring the word FUCK.

the one thing that I have learned in seeing 100+ shows is that the band will play whatever the fuck they want to play.  As much as the audience plays a role, brings a sign, sleeps with a band member and whispers requests into their ears, the band has no limitations. I think that the first leg of the tour has shown us that they are playing stronger and tighter than last year and that they are having a hell of a good time.

I say let em play shit from the 80's more than the new stuff cause only a % of people will know what the fuck is going on.... and that is what makes the shows exciting- not knowing what is next.

With the Grateful Dead you always knew that Fire on the Mountain was gonna come after Scarlet Begonias. Not the case with Phish.... you never know what will come after Mikes Song and if they will even bother going into Week4Paug.

For myself and my own enjoyment I like the element of surprise & not knowing what I am walking into when I hit up a show

But what the hell do I know....

destiny as guyforget said was a beloved song that had the hype.
chain was like fyf, in that nobody ever expected them to play it, and also that it lost some of its hype once played b/c it was in the later years of the band......

so does this mean there would have to be some prep school hippie discussions before they will play that? I'd be down with a whirl, I believe 12-6-86 is the last version of that song. That would technically beat the FYF bust out wise. As for if people really want to hear it, I doubt it. It's a fun lil' diddy that has a few dated references and a nice section in the middle. Yet another one that caravan's lazy ass has not made it out to see  :-P

Played only once before on an unknown date at least 23 years ago . . .

And I'd put Alumni ahead of it too, because unlike FYF I actually think it was cool because I like the song, not just because they haven't played it in a long time.

Alumni '99 sans Letter to Jimmy Page, or Alumni '10 w/ LTJP?

I cant decide which is more significant, or if they tie, or what.  I was particularly happy that they did the LTJP part when they played Alumni this year, as it should just be part of the song, like The Landlady is part of PYITE, or Bundle of Joy is part of Fluffhead.

Also, if youre going to count a song like Alumni Blues, which was played in '99, what about something like Curtis Loew?  I bet I could have found more people on lot in the late '90s who would have said Curtis than FYF.

Well, it was only once off, and the time before that was twice in '94 then before that '91. 3 year gap, 5 year gap, 11 year gap. I'm saying that even if they had played Alumni>LTJB>Alumni frequently until '99 then didn't play it until this year I'd still say it was bigger. I think it's more about how important it was, and how good it is. I'd care more if they played it again this tour than if they busted out another '80s tune.

I was pretty pumped to see Curtis Loew and NEVER thought I'd hear that.  I was also super excited about Destiny at Fenway and then we get it again at the Gorge and then again at Alpharetta, but the specialness and stigma has kind of diminished for me now.  I think FYF was pretty HUGE.  A lot of people there knew of the song and a lot didn't.  I think there is some lore around FYF.  You would have had to really know some stuff about Phish to even know it existed as a song.

And as for the LTJP part, I agree, just call it part of the song.  Its exactly like Landlady and for me I didn't "flip my shit" when it happened.  Its basically part of the song.  So I heard the first LTJP in X years.  I was more excited about Alumni.  It was funky and fun as hell.  Really tight version!

It's funny that we're discussing how excited we "should" be about this bustout.

I'm just excited!!

I know we're all stats nerds, but d00dz, they played face. not played since 87. phish is back!

Except They don't play PYITE without the "Landlady" segments nor did they play LTJP while Alumni was on hiatus (as they did with Landlandy while PYITE was away.)

But they DID play Alumni without LTJP... Thus making that segment totally awesome to see.

FWIW, I like the LTJP segment a lot more than the Alumni portion of the tune.

What a great quirky funky rocker!

so if it doesnt ever get played again, is there no more LTJP title?
wonder if royalties or legal issues had anything to do with that decision.

they did just pay out on The Rover.

i was under the impression that phish told them not to label LTJP as its own track.
maybe we can get some insight on this?

did phish acknowledge it anywhere else FTR or twitter or anything?

If you look at livephish.com it is labeled Alumni>LTP>Alumni...

Plus, I guess both songs are written by Anastasio alone, so there is no reason to separate tracks for royalties or anything.

You would have had to really know some stuff about Phish to even know it existed as a song.

This is why FYF wins.  Who cares what the masses talked about or wanted to come back?

FYF is so under the radar that only dudes like me, RJ and Trey Monkestasio talked about it.

A bustout of the highest order leaves 90% of the crowd scratching their heads, while rewarding the truly obsessive fans.

Also, lol at people thinking that Jimmy Page has copywritten his name.

I agree - and the only original song left that would beat it as a bigger bustout is Prep School Hippie.

But, even as a cover, Scar->Fire->Fire on the Mountain would be even bigger. It's just so genius!

I know this because I saw someone on another board post that they were going to play this.  They made that post about about two weeks ago

sorry to be a bubble buster

I don't know what's lamer, the idea that they planned to play it two weeks ahead of time, or that they told enough people for it to end up on message boards.

Not buying it.

It might not have been that long ago... memory is foggy.  But it was posted at least a week before the show.  Luckily I did not read it until after I got home from the show.  I cant stand when people post shit like that.  Wow.. you heard this... dont post about it.  I dont care how cool you think it will make you look that you know somehing, dont post about it and ruin the surprise for everyone else.. ya know.  Major dickheadish move I think.  Keep it to yourself

I don't think it's the fact that they plan to bust something out.  But that they plan to bust it out on a specific date that far ahead
Title: Re: Fuck4paug
Post by: WhatstheUse? on July 07, 2010, 01:53:10 PM
It just seems to me that almost everything in 3.0 has been well planned out ahead of time.

Surely, setlists are written out before shows, and I wouldn't be surprised if they had chose all of their bustouts and new covers before the tour even started.

Things are a bit less spontaneous in the world of phish these days....
Title: Re: Fuck4paug
Post by: whyweigh5.0 on July 07, 2010, 01:54:58 PM
oh I totally agree about everything being planned out and I think it's working pretty well.  They definitely have the entire shows planned out setlist wise.  Which is why sometimes Trey has to, what some may call "horseforce" a jam to get the show back on track.  If he didn't then things just wouldnt work

Lame.

all I'm saying is that most shows this year had either

a.) a new cover

or

b.) a huge bustout

Which imo, is awesome, and a cool way for the band to keep things fresh.  It just wouldn't surprise me that they planned out ahead of time where a lot of these new songs/bustouts would be placed.  They obviously had to do this somewhat systematically to ensure that each show had one of these things...
