really loving the brief period between Mikey's departure and Keith's arrival, the stripped down GD.  Jerry's tone is esp. psychedelic.  anyone else out there dig this brief period of the band's evolution?

Garcia famously described that lineup as a "shoot-'em-up saloon band" but that is selling the group short.  Yes, their flights into rockified country were inspired and remarkably authentic, but their shows offered so much more: jams that felt stripped to their pure essence, floating and crashing and soaring and swinging on the dependably weird and meandering rhythmic river of Phil's anaconda bass and the quicksilver beat of Bill Kreutzman's drums; and plenty of good time rock and roll, blues and R&B, as well.

the surreal jam in the last 6 or 7 minutes of 28April71 Dark Star or 18Feb.71 Beautiful Jam/Dark Star also come to mind.

I also like the Other One from the closing of Fillmore West, it actually ends. And the straight-up rock stuff is badass too, the Cold Rain and Snow and Bobby McGee (with yodeling Jerry) from 5April are two good examples.

The Alligator through to Morning Dew from 4-29-71 is in my top 3 fav jams. I love the sparse, different sound from this era.

notes:
-cassette gen?,
-disc # 2 has tracking errors,

-splice at 11:05 of The Other One, comes back in after rewinding about 3 seconds,
-Sugar Mag cuts at 4:09,
-King Bee, GSET>JB Goode & Good Lovin? seem to be patched from an inferior, more
hissy SBD source,
B+ quality at best

Thanks to Paul B. for hooking me up with these fine shows.

really loving the brief period between Mikey's departure and Keith's arrival, the stripped down GD.  Jerry's tone is esp. psychedelic.  anyone else out there dig this brief period of the band's evolution?

I can dig it, Jerry called it the bar band days, I believe. '71 gets shit on a lot that's for sure.

Morning Dew was actually in the previous set, but I know what you mean. The Dew from 4-28 is killer too.

I figured, just busting balls a bit, that is a sweet Rain and Snow.

Another 1970 show has surfaced.  Not a sbd, but an uncirculated show none the less.

Thank you Mr. Miller

awesome. glad i checked into ye ole GDthread today.
i love this tour.
i had spent alot of time going through the shambles of what exists back before my last HD crashed.
i've yet to re-acquire all those, but this will be great hearing something previously missed.
-I'm still walkin', so i'm sure that I can dance-
