20 minute R&R looks REALLY TASTY. Bet everyone thought they were headed out of the stratosphere after that......then Trey crashed the Millenium Falcon with the single minute album tracks. Baby steps though, baby steps.

I found a working stream sometime around the end of the R&R jam.  What I heard sounded cool.  I'll definitely be jumping straight to that.

Listening to Rock & Roll now... I went way out there.

Farmhouse was a beefy 5:22!

Comments on the twittertubes seemed pretty positive. Kind of looking forward to hearing this Rock & Roll at least.

Phish songs.

"Jam" of the night will be a cover.

Looks like RJ may have called it.

Listening to R&R now. Shits pretty nuts by the time Page steps over to the theremin.
I've wondered if he remembered how to play it.

The show last night was great for a tour opener.....Started off good, not great, and took off with the Gin.  There was some nice stuff in the Gin.  Taste was also really good and I am looking  forward to hearing it as well as Roggae.  Roggae was sick with the sunset.  Weather, as usual, was hot and sunny, which was pretty perfect.  We got box seats next to the soundboard, which as far as I am concerned is the only way to go at the Gorge.  Dead center, raised platform, waitress service, it was dope.  There was a ton of room on the floor too.  The Rock and Roll was bad ass, and I thought at one point they were going to go into Sabotage...I can;t wait to hear it, I could of sworn there was like this wacky "almost" Sabotage jam...whatever it was, was dope and the R&R was def the set and show highlight for me (and Roggae).  The band sounds very relaxed.

After the show we all headed to Shakedown got some food and then Hicks' wife called and she was in a car crash and in the hospital (she is OK though) and the car got totaled so Hicks had to leave this morning, which sucks ass.  Drove him to the lot at 8:30AM (weak) this morning so he could get a ride back with Burmese Phython and we get there and BP's battery was dead....Spent a half hour trying to jump it, finally got it going.  I came back to the hotel, just rocked some pancakes at Perkins and now I am going to chug a beer, puff and sleep in my dark air conditioned room for the next 3-4 hours I hope.  It is freaking blazing sun out there.  Driving to a hotel sucks, but oppressive heat sucks worse.

Saw Heath and WTU post show for a brew at  my buddies RV and that was cool....Tonight should be sick, they left a lot on the table.  As good as last night was for a tour opener, I really think the boys have the potential for some real fire on this leg!

Over and out, I am putting on the sleep mask (after I chug this brewski  :beers:)

Sup dudes, back home and both the wife and baby are OK, wife is just a little scratched and bruised.

Not stoked to miss tonight, but I am glad to be here with them and that the accident was not too bad.

As for last night Roggae and Rock and Roll were big time highlights and those along with my first Walk Away made up for the second set fizzling pretty badly from the Farmhouse> Show of Life 3.0'ing.

I don't think we have but I'm pretty sure it has to do with royalties because this Rock and Roll went back into the verses at the end of the jam so the entire time playing it is considered R&R. When they don't go back into the song then the jam segment is labelled differently so they only pay royalties for 5 minutes.  .02$

ROCK & FUCKING ROLL! Exploratory jamming to the depths of the dark and nasty sludge. Had to pick up my face off the back of the floor with a fucking spatula. Ritarded.

Thought the Gin brought the energy after they were clearly feeling out the crowd through the first couple cuts. Roggae was as slinky and tasty as I've ever heard it. Long first set... patient playing and listening.

Was hoping for a monster to open set two and kind of had a little air taken out when BDTNL started. Halfway through a fucking shooting/falling star zipped by the top right of the stage... immediately turned to my buddies and four of us all saw the same exact thing... crazy shit that instantly kicked Number Line up a notch for me.

Then. Came. The. Fucking. HEAT! Seriously this Rock & Roll pushed the limits of what music IS. Theremin weirdness... immensely locked in listening from everyone. This jam could have gone so many places... so many little ideas were being thrown out in the jam... felt a Moma groove working... then that seemed to slink into almost a No Quarter type jam... Caravan said he was hearing Sabotage... WTU felt like it was Storage esque... either way it was menacing and Mack-Truck-In-The-Face dirty.

Sweet segue into Meatstick. The train seemed to be led onto the Meatstick track by Mike... again amazing listening going on to get to this point in such a deep deep jam. I always find myself laughing and smiling during Meatstick, which def changed the mood from the open-mouthed get-down under-the-crowd slay fest we had just witnessed.

Boogie On capped one of the more powerful 45-min sections the band has launched into in quite a while.

Then it seemed like they kind of felt like they had already done it... and they had... but going Farmhouse, Show Of Life just seemed really strange to me. Still beautiful, but it really shows that the band is sober. VERY happy about this for the sake of health and longevity, but at times it leads to an un-linking of the chain. In a way it almost felt like they were saying... OK, let's keep our eyes on the prize here and not go so fucking deep the whole set that we have nothing left in the tank for night 2. Honestly by this point I was so fucking blown away by Rock & Roll that having the set end the way it did really didn't bother me.

Turned to my buddy Riley at the encore break and swiftly called Stones... "Shine A Light or Loving Cup... book it." Nice capper to a hot and sweaty Phish show.

Kicked it with Caravan, JPhish, WTU, Hicks and a bunch of non-Paug peeps post show. Was scary there for a bit when I first heard about Hick's wife and newborn's car accident, but felt a lot better when he said he'd talked to her on the phone. Had to go to a really good friends wedding yesterday so Caravan brought Hicks back to the camp early style so I could give me a ride back to Portland and he could put his mind at ease. In classic Gorge fashion (for me) I'd run my battery fully dead from blasting tunes. Pull out Caravan's jumpers and in my barley-slept-still-kind-of-spun mindset put the cables on wrong and shorted the first set. After a bit of head scratching this nice dude in an oversized pick-up pulled forward and pretty much just took the reigns and made the ship happen. With brain on the mend and car running we made it back to P-Town just in time to get Hicks home, my other friends to the wedding they needed to get to... and after the shortest post-Gorge shower I've ever taken I made my buddies wedding with about 8 minutes to spare... fucking whirlwind.

SO FUCKING STOKED FOR HOLLYWOOD AND TAHOE!

When Mike started dropping the funky bassline around 11 minutes in I just started dancing in my car. Then I was blown away in the last few minutes, that jam is far better than any 3.0 so far.  Great segue into Meatstick also..

Finally getting around to listening while I work this morning... the Roggae is cool because it actually demonstrates more patience than I think we've been seeing in general. That said, I'm not blown away by it. I still liked the SPAC Roggae from last summer much better.

The second set here is as good as Phish gets these days. Even the Meatstick isn't annoying. The R&R is solid and fun AND out there a bit. Great show. Would have been pleased to be there (I really have to get to the Gorge one of these days!)

Roggae — patient, relaxed but sort of boring.

I was much more satisfied with the first set than the second myself, really that first set is all killer no filler and in person the Roggae really was perfection.

The second didn't have a whole to offer (for me) after the mind bl0wing R&R.

I am digging everything so far.  #Line had a different feel, R&R is  :rockout: and  at the same time.  I even enjoyed the MeatStick.  Boogie on is .

In the middle of Boogie on right now.  Lets see how the rest flows.  But so far, I would have enjoyed this show quite a bit.  Even in terrible venue its solid so far.  Gorge easily gets a multiplier applied to it.

Well, this transition to Farmhouse is poop (Honey Bucket Style).  But oh well.

skipped around with this show..dig the roggae - agree with previous comments - patient, relaxed and allowed the jam to develop..the gin was decent

probably on an island on this one but the R & R does nothing for me..jam seems somewhat contrived and for the most part, we have heard this type of jam before...it got interesting with about 3 min left but of course---3.0'd... :tte: IMO

they can shelf Boogie On now too...over played and its the same ol' jam

I agree here.  I too thought the jam was typical 3.0 mud and contrivision, the hallmark of Phish 3.0.

the RnR jam is one of the coolest jams phish have ever played.    It doesn't really sound like any other 3.0 jam I can think of nor any other phish jam period.     Page's wall of synths madness with crazy delay tails is sick.........Trey really seems restrained and in the moment..........I can't imagine tripping at the gorge for this jam........might scare me.

good stuff.

I'm not offended brah, just trying to help you and let you know that you really need to clean your ears out.  It's a serious problem that could eventually lead to deafness which I suppose in your case might be preferable.

it's amazing how opposite ends of the spectrum phish fans have become.

I liked the jam.  I will listen to it again.  when I start to roll my eyes is when it is compared to years past.  I start to roll my eyes when people start to use words like epic.  it's also why I never really rate shows until enough time has passed.

I'm glad some people are loving this stuff and I am sad that some people are hating on it, myself included.  I wish they could put out a product night in and night out that a majority of us can agree is great.  for now, we need to settle for moments and the RnR is one of those.

DOOOD.

That Rock and Roll was gnarly.  Page's delay-drenched theremin was fucking sick.

These west coast shows always piss me off, because they always do cool things, like playing this Rock and Roll.

Btw, I would like to specifically thank Mike and Fish for this Roggae.  Fucking GLORY.  Did you guys hear the baby whammy loops?  And the dissolvance of the structure, and then Trey's minor pentatonic blues licks from 8:00 onwards....  mmmmm gushy.  This Roggae is glorioutiously delightable.

I've not got much a lot of time to dawdle away elitizing my opiniocisms pergarding Phish-stuffs, due to the stock market's fit of retardity and people calling with their panties in a dirty twist over Green Mountain coffee's meteoric tanking in price, coincidenting along with the overall decline of all things numbers-that-exist-on-paper-only.

Especially doubly-annoying due to the fact that my dad is out of town with his new fiancee visiting NYC, because she was from Minnesota, so they're down there and I'm cleaning up the mess of his absence and Grandma Angie's panic-ridden sell-off.

At least I have the h33t of the Phish vimeo page to keep me happy.  I can't access youtube or email or anything here, but this site, livephish.com and the vimeo page are good...and holy fuck, I've just had my shit blown out of my ass by face-raging stuff like the 5/31/11 Maze, the 6/11/11 Wilson->Sand, and mondo versions of stuff I figured was GOA (garbage-on-arrival), like the Great Woods Divided Sky.

I didn't know Great Woods allowed Phish to play anything besides bad versions of lackluster songs.  Well, at least since the very first song of the very first show of what was supposed to be the last time they'd ever visit the place.  Or, the 8/10/04 ACDC Bag, if you couldn't figure that out.

Seriously...wheres the video of that ACDC Bag?  That shit....  man, I'd eat creamed corn out of a dirty 90 year old woman's diaper after she ate sauerkraut and canned yams washed down by a few chocolate Ensure's if I could've seen that in action.

holy shit! listening to this rnr for the first time. It's like they reached up to the night skies, ripped back the curtains of the universe, dropped into a black hole only to return transformed into a band of screaming banshee's spitting fire onto the crowd. Well done Phish.

It's true. I think I was listening to some led zep. Anyhow, then Trey's solo in Farmhouse is really just gorge-ous (see what I did there? see it's funny, because they were playing at the gorge, and I split up the word gorgeous up so you could see that, in reference to where they were, anyway, it made me chortle)...but then show of life? no thanks.  :shakehead:

It's acceptable as an encore if you are looking for an excuse to duck out early and beat the crowds.

Mid second set, not so much.

Oh no, I didn't mean to imply that at all. My "no thanks" was as in I don't ever want to hear that again and they should TTE that p.o.s. song too. Sorry for the confusion.

I found that whole segment from R&R through Farmhouse to be pretty fantastic. R&R was definitely a 3.0 highlight for me and the segue to Meatstick was butter (although the mid-second set Meatstick has me scratching my head). The transition to Boogie On was slick as well and Mike seemed to have a little extra pep than usual in the Boogie On and while it wasn't anything shockingly original, it was enough to get me bouncing in my chair. Not much of a segue (Trey just starts singing the lyrics), but I did really enjoy Farmhouse more than I thought I would have on paper.

I enjoy Show of Life as an encore, but it does nothing for me after Farmhouse and my enthusiasm starts to fade after it.

it's funny because I hated the transition to boogie on.  one of my biggest faults with shows lately in the poor transitions which makes shows for me.

it is funny how everyone's tastes are different.  from reading threads, you gain respect for so many people's opinions on music and then it they could be so different from your own.  it what makes phish phish I guess.

I mean, I am still grading on a 3.0 curve. It wasn't mind-bending, but it wasn't the show stopping force-fests we saw last year or even earlier this summer. IMO, of course.

You're not alone, I hate the placement. I just meant I was pleasantly surprised. I still think putting it in the heart of the second set is equivalent of playing Joy after Mike's.

I mean if they have to play Farmhouse after Boogie at least have the sense to end Boogie first, that was a segue that should have never been attempted.

20 minute R&R looks REALLY TASTY. Bet everyone thought they were headed out of the stratosphere after that......then Trey crashed the Millenium Falcon with the single minute album tracks. Baby steps though, baby steps.

But IMO, Farmhouse blows no matter the setting: 1st, 2nd or Encore.

Even if it was well played it doesn't even come close to a version like Oak Mt. 99.

But yeah I'd be fine with never hearing that song again.

Just relistened to the bulk of the second set and Gordo was ON IT from 11 minutes into RnR through the end of Boogie On. Total Gordo H34t! Trey is kinda deep sea diving in the first few minutes of that same time span but drops the whale and lets loose. Totally enjoyed the Claypool-esque effect that Mike uses in the jam leading up to Meatstick. Hell even Meatstick is great. The segue into Boogie isn't pretty, but then the flow picks right back up. Farmhouse still wrecks the funky spaceship though. Also, it sounds like Mike is playing the Suskind bassline at one point during the RnR.

I think it's really well played, and don't even mind the placement...I feel like the crash didn't occur until the show of life just after it.

Agreed with jimbo tho, the rnr thru farmhouse is def the highlight of this show, minus a couple bad segues in there.

Yeah, I mean...  Farmhouse is an awkward song, imo.  It can be either dubiously sappy and pathetic, or light-heartedly deep and sincere.  Its really weird.

I would have been okay with it, because they never play it anymore, and its another song I'd have gotten to hear them play.  But then playing Show of Life after is ehhh

I mean, thats like if they had done something totally sick, like Mike's Song -> Sneakin' Sally -> Mango > I Am Hydrogen > Reba > Fee -> Weekapaug and then finish the set with Wading in the Velvet Sea, Show of Life > Friday and encoring with Spread it Round -> Secret Smile.

I was on the floor, Fish-side, and when they dropped into BOOGIE the whole crowd went nuts.  :rockout: Sometimes, I view Phish as a radio playing the right songs for the evening, even if those songs aren't theirs or don't get stretched into weird spaces. We all had some boogie in us and we all let it out at the same time, so I thought that felt pretty cool.
And when I say 'whole crowd,' I mean 'a bunch of people around me, and then my imagination fired off.'
But you're right, it didn't feel like a transition as much as the four of them all starting it at the same time. I should go back and re-check it out.

Every time I listen to Rock & Roll I feel compelled to come here and post some blathering plaudit. The last 2:15 of RnR is so spine-tinglingly good it's criminal. Mike's Sabotage-esque bass line is straight nasty.

I hate second-set Meatsticks as much as the next guy, but this is how it should be done.

That last two minutes when Fish drops into the Sabotage beat IS straight nasty....The whole time when I was there I was thinking they are about to bust into Sabotage...It would have HUGE for them to drop that..either way, the Meatstick is still a great version and the transition is sweet...But the Rock and Roll is so killer, def one of my fave 3.0 and any era jams.....I would put it toe to toe with any Rock and Roll, even Radio City....

If they had busted into Sabotage I seriously would have lost my mind, especially considering that I saw the B-Boys play it at the Gorge in 94, a moment that will forever be etched in my mind.

Today's ride to work music is going to be the RnR > Meatstick > Reggae Woman. It's been quite awhile since I listened to it, but I remember it being amazingly good.

Yep, that sequence still hold up to repeated listening.  I never get tired of that R&R.....
