Set I:

Theme From the bottom-  I like this is as an opener.  It's a pretty laid back version in my opinion.  Overall, it's pretty well played.  I think they cut right to the chase with the jam.  I also think it sets a pretty good tone for set one.  This one never really rages, which in some instances, I feel like is how the jam should be.  But like I said, something about the "laid back" nature of this version is nice to me.  Trey does bring the solo to a nice peak.

Beauty of My Dreams-  Little 'grass.  Always a treat.  I dig it in the second slot.  Kicks the tempo up a notch, and also throws some diversity into the mix.  It's a solid version.

Gumbo-  Now, I know everyone and their mother knows this Gumbo.  FTA'd.  None the less, it's a sick version.  Shit gets super THICK.  Dripping with that proto funk that would later emerge on the Fall '97 tour.  The jam gets right to the grit of it.  Which I like, this version doesn't fuck around at all.  Again, I like the diversity.  "soaring" tune to open > grass > some funk.  It def keeps it interesting.  The goods start even in the break down section.  Fucking Page earning that 'sammich.  It's loose but tight.  Right on the fine line they need to be walking.

You can just tell in the second refrain, they're fucking bursting to launch into their new sound.  It's a common theme I noticed this tour.  That first jam of each show just oozes with anticipation and energy.  Trey throws on the les right away, and carves out some slow lines and eases into the thick of it.  The syncopation is nice.  That's all Fish too in my opinion.  Gotta love Mike and Page hanging back in the pocket.  Trey with the staccato picking is awesome too.

~5:15 back of the worm sound emerging.  Dripping with lysergic awesomeness. Completely Trey led, but they operate as if it's one mind.  I again, love the syncopation by Fish, breaking the beat down at times.  Funk builds nicely, and slowly.  I also dig how it isn't all minor 7th oriented.  A lot of variation in what they are playing.  That's the fresh part about Summer '97 to me, it hadn't become a crutch, and the concept of reputation for inspiration hadn't been implicated either.

~8:05 new theme coming out.  More syncopation.  I particularly dig Mike in this section.  Very chill.  Trey steps this very interesting melodic pattern, and builds it really well.  Again, playing with the rhythm.  His tone is spectacular to me.

~10:15 It begins to get spacey.  I love how much room there is too breathe.  It never loses it's pace either.  Very ambient, just waiting to drop back into it.  Fish keeping it together as the rest of the band breaks it down.

~12:00 ambient theme continues.  Very pretty sounding to me.  I love the sounds page is making.  It sets the mood perfectly.  The fizzle out is a nice ending too

Dirt-  I have always liked Dirt.  I dig the placement.  4th slot, 1st set.  Gets the ballad out of the way.  I think it also kinda goes with the ominous tone that was just set in the Gumbo jam.  It's an okay version.  Nothing memorable.

Sparkle- piss break

Ghost-  This Ghost fucking RIPS.  I've always felt that the Euro '97 Ghosts give a nice glimpse of what is to come, it's kind of like eyeing a fifteen year old chick and going, "in a few years, FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK me."  You just know.  The first American version (7/21) is that fruition to maturity.  It's evolved in a completely different way.  The next version 7/23, epitomizes the full potential of the song.  And I think 7/25 is the same way too.  This version.  It's soaring, raging, monster of porn0-funk from right out of the gates.  Encapsulating the Summer '97 sound.

~3:03 right out of the gate they get down to cereal biznass.  Page gets thick with the clav, and Trey hones in on the worm inter-dimensional tone.  The staccato minor theme by Trey sets the tone for the first part of the jam.  I like how they go in and out syncopation with the funk theme.

~5:16 steam picking up as they begin to build this beast.  I love the patience with Trey.  He could climax it right away, but they ride it up like a rollar coaster.

~7:00 love the theme here.  The rhythm of it is very interesting to me.  It builds perfectly to me.  It's like a demonic sounding symphony at times.

~8:10 Trey take off.

~8:30 some wah action.  keepin' it in the pocket, bringing it back around

~10:45 and the PEAK begins...

~12:47 Nice little major key modulation

~14:09 slides nicely into minor key bliss. sets up a great segue for -->

Swept Away > Steep- Love this tandem.  Great version.  I think the placement is perfect too.  It's also got an ominous tone to me.

Loving Cup-  meh.  This is the only complaint about the show I have.  I've never been a loving cup fan.  I would have excused myself to beat the line to get another beer, or sat down.  Anti-climatic way to end set one IMO.

SET BREAK.

Set II

Olivia's Pool - eh.  Not too keen on this cheesy ditty.  But whatever, cheese dickery out of the way early to get to real meat of the set.

Antelope-  Here we go.  Now we're cooking.  Extra long version.  Pretty standard through the composed sections.  Hose comes in the jam section and break down.  Pretty tight in the composed section.

~2:50 we're off.  Trey comes out firing right away, very aggressive.  I fucking like it.  Jedi on a mission to split the inter-dimensional portal.

~4:25 awesome little theme by Trey.  Very good use of outside the box tonality to build tension.

~5:35 more awesome theme building, I really like how they keep bringing it back around

~7:12 more Jedi from Trey.

~8:10 descent into very spacey territory

~9:25 I dig how it breaks down here, and is "falling" apart.  They use dynamics in the same way they normally use tension and release.

~10:20 this build up is very cool to me, and just as quickly it gets spacey again, modulation into major key territory

I love that this ventures into atypical territory.  Awesome major key jam.

I love how they tie back into the main jam.  Awesome peak.  And marco section.

Velvet Sea- piss break

Twist- This is the highlight of the set and the show for me.  This has become a top 5 version of Twist for me.

I love how the refrain fades nicely into the jam.

~4:04 and we're off.  They settle into a nice groove to start this.  Keeping with the main theme of Twist.

~7:30 developing nicely.

~8:55 I really like what they do here and how it develops into this awesome "out there" theme

~10:20 here is where it really starts to come together.  This meta worm space to me.

~11:00 I like how dark and twisted this gets, it's all Trey leading this to me, he's the one pushing inward like it's an implosion

~12:34 this is just fucking sinister psychedelia to me.  I would be losing my mind if I saw this live.  When I was listening to this tripping face a few months back.  It had me crawling up the fucking wall.

~13:30 here's your type II jamz motherfuckers.  Evil, pure fucking evil.  I love the wah work by Trey.  The syncopation is very cool.  It goes against the rhythmic grain of the rest of the band.

~15:33 a really nice melodic and major key jam develops here.  I dig the light and dark contrast of the jam.  shit's a journey

~17:05 it gets really blissful here

nice segue into -->

Taste- pretty good version.  jam section is slightly extended.  Hard to beat 7/22/97 though.

Sample- meh

Rocky Top- Eh.  I'll take it.

Coil- I love a good Coil closer.  This is a great version.  Has a great ending jam by Page.

Encore:

Possum-  ::leaves to get balloons::

Desert Sky Pav, Phoenix AZ

I

Theme - Always a good opener.  97 was such a great year for this song.  Super high energy to bring it back home.

BOMD - Does just what it's supossed to do.

Gumbo - Super deep summer funk.  Love the ambiant shit was page.  SOOOO GOOD.

Dirt - I liked it.

Sparkle - WHat else do I need to say.

Ghost - Page need to bring back these kind of ghost intros.  Right around 5min shit starts getting real deep and trey just keeps on diggin. Such fantastic teamwork and with trey taking the lead at about 12min and just kills.

Swept away>steep - Nice little set one breather.

Loving Cup - Straight :rawk:

II

Olivia's pool - This first arrangment always me smile a bit. I wish it would have stuck around for a bit. BUt yeah.....shafty is better.

Antelope - And now we're off. Love the way trey tones back a bit after the intro.  And then a bit before 6 min mark starts getting real dirty dark.  Then everyone gets really spacy around 9 and stays there and loves it and trey comes back in the lead with some really beautiful stuff up until ripping into some more heavy riffs and then back to darker and then back to high gear before leading in the the rye rye.  Awesome fuck in the rye rye as well, real thick.  I LOVE THIS ANTELOPE!

Wading - Love the studio style looping effect intro, that needs to come back too.  Need a break after that lope and it's not bad either.

Twist - THis version is pretty great.  Gets super dark and keeps it going, and like sophist said yeah it's a journey; pretty fucking cool one too. Grade A twist.

Taste - I like it.

Sample - My piss break song. Goota beat those crowds.

Rocky Top - Sure I love bluegrass.

Coil - Pages takes us out on a really cool note.

E

Possum - It's got some energy but thats about it.

Overall I have always really liked this show.  Summer 97 is one of the first tours that I really sat down and listened to straight thought and I think I can't do that with a lot of other ones.  B+/A- show, thanks for poiting me in the direction ramz.

Set 1:
Theme From the Bottom - tough to beat as an opener. Most notable is how this one ends. Trey is givin' 'er all he's got, Captain!

Beauty of My Dreams - Fun first set ditty. I actually really love this song!

Gumbo - gotta love how this thing breaks down right away. Honestly, it's all Mike making this groove work with his funky minimalist lines. Not even 5 minutes in this thing is funky as hell.

Dirt - And from that killer Gumbo, a reminder that we're still in the first set, I guess? I like this tune. No complaints.

Sparkle - and another 1st set staple. crowd goes wild

Ghost - I love Mike's low-end vocals in the last refrain. Sofa king great! 10 minutes in and this funk is actually not boring. They are doing some fun shit. Mike just went into double-time. Page is on piano, not clav or whatever he defaults to in funk jams these days. Then the last few minutes are great... Major chord jamming with feeling. And again, Mike is owning this shit.

Swept Away > Steep >  hard to believe, but I never saw one of these until 2010. Meh, never been my favorite. The one I saw was better than this, too.

Loving Cup - I will always love this tune. Great set closer.

Set 2:
Olivia's Pool - I've only heard this song in this format a handful of times. Very amusing and fun.

Run Like an Antelope > this song usually serves as an exclamation point on a big set. here it's the meat and potatoes for the early 2nd set. And it does not disappoint. about 9 minutes in and it's again all Mike making this interesting. Trey is literally noodling as he's often accused. But Mike is all over the place. Love the breakdown section here, too. Again, all Mike all night!

Wading in the Velvet Sea - meh

Twist -> What the hell happened to this thing? About 9 minutes in and Trey is all over the place but the rest of the band has fallen apart. This thing is out there. Tough to follow what's happening at all. Not that it's bad, but it's all over the place.

Taste - Rages. Trey is in pure rage mode!

Sample in a Jar > meh

Rocky Top - I love this tune. I don't care who are.

The Squirming Coil - beautiful outtro solo from Page. Beautiful!

Encore: Possum - Rager to close!

overall a great show - B+. Good choice. I don't listen to a lot of summer 97. It's not my favorite era. I know. I know. I just don't particularly dig the Aud recordings out there for most of these shows, so I don't give it much time. Thanks for making me hear this one. I enjoyed it.

Set 1
THEME FROM THE BOTTOM - Good song for starting the show off with a bang. Trey flubs some notes in the ascending part after the 2nd verse, but recovers. The jam gets seriously soaring and a little bit shreddy, and a little chaotic but in a good way. Seems to get the crowd worked up.

BEAUTY OF MY DREAMS - This is the spot for bluegrass, I guess. Beauty's fine. Not one of my favorite bluegrass tunes they do, but it doesn't suck either. Standard version.

GUMBO – Jam goes right into some nice syncopated oxyfunk, morphs into something synthy and weird (Sophist had it on the nose with the Wormtown comparison), gets really dark. Mike with some nicely articulated runs and Fish with the rolls around the 10 minute mark.

DIRT – One of the better ballady Phish songs, in my opinion. I love the guitar solo, and this one is just sloppy/distorted enough. I think this is one of the last introspective Phish songs that doesn't cross into cornball territory. So that's a plus too.

SPARKLE - I like Sparkle. Yeah it's always the same, but it's high energy and quintessential Phish. Fuck the haterz.

GHOST – I've always been hot and cold about Ghost, and rarely seek out versions to explore, but right off the bat this one looks like it'll go in the good pile for me. The energy is there right from the start, feels a little BEK-y at times. I like hearing the "Yeah!"s and the "Oh!"s from Trey so you know he's feeling it... This era they were definitely messing around with the intensity of the jam by bringing it down a lot. Swaggery rhythm starting around 6:35 is fun, but then the repetition starts. Between about 8:00 and 10:00 I'm a little bored, to be honest - repetitive funk is not exactly my thing. Mike brings the popcorn thumbslaps in around there though, and it seems to reinvigorate the whole band. Energy comes back and the jam gets a little Gin-ish around 12:15. They keep the energy high for a few minutes, and then it just kind of peters out. Yeah, I don't know. This one was kind of hot and cold in the same version for me.

SWEPT AWAY>STEEP> - Standard version, unremarkable but fine.

LOVING CUP – Does what Loving Cup does, good-ass arena rock, that's about it.

Set 2
OLIVIA'S POOL – Total throwaway song. I'm glad they turned it into Shafty, and I wish they'd bring that one back around more often.

RUN LIKE AN ANTELOPE> -  I fucking love Antelope. Even the most standard ones are a journey and the exploratory Antelope that breaks out and goes fully Type II is a rare jewel indeed.  Low key, understated intro gets playful a bit before the shift to 2nd Gear. Trey kind of misses that shift because he's playing around (I've never really understood what was so hard about "dunh-dunh-dunh dunh-dunh" or why they miss it so often), but he nails the fast runs at the shift to 3rd so all is well. It's Antelope as usual for a few. Trey's got that dirty, synthy atonal harmony effect on for a few minutes, then gets restless and switches back to a cleaner tone, then gets restless with that and starts playing with the rhythms of his phrases. He kind of doesn't seem like he knows where to go, but they all slog through it, looking for something. After a while, he's back to the dirty tone, then starts layering some feedback loops while Page gets tinkly on the piano. Finally, Mike starts playing a descending theme that breaks them fully into non-Antelope space. This could almost be Disintegration-era Cure for half a minute or so. Repetitive, melodic lines eventually morph into a more assertive, majestic passage that's starting to approach Antelope again. Page is still on the piano, giving everything a more emotional feel than usual. At about 13:15 Trey's playing some Antelope licks again, and by 14:00 they're back. Song continues its climb to the peak as usual. There's a particularly sweet spot around 15:20 or so, a few moments before the drums kick into double time, where Trey's playing this very Machine Gun-like wailing whammy thing that just kills. The band nails the drop, and there are a few seconds of that Could You Be Loved-sounding thing. Seriously jammy and interactive Rye Rye Rocco section! They wrap it up, Page starts the sireny bloops and they go into the next song. Unique version overall. Really, they don't go that far out. My favorite parts are still the standard Antelope parts, but the explorative parts just add extra points.

WADING IN THE VELVET SEA – Loved this song in the late 90s, totally sick of it now. I started to count the number of times they sang "I've been wading in the velvet sea", and lost my will after the first verse (they were up to 30, so I'm pretty sure the whole song was in the 100 – 150 range).

TWIST> - Awesome, exploratory version that drifts into some dark ambient space. I love the energy in these early versions of Twist. Trey really gives it a little extra oomph in the verses. After the verses, it drops right into a mellow jam that explores quiet space. Trey sounds like his guitar is made of springs. Speeding up around 7:30, syncopated, still in that quiet space though. The quiet jamming in this song leaves lots of room for dynamics, and it feels as though the song is breathing. Abrupt shift around 9:00, atonal, then suddenly a fast boogie rhythm, immediately falls apart and gets chaotic, then back into some synthy pitch-shifted stuff with a weird, uncomfortable urgency. Stays that way, but at the same time constantly changes, for several minutes, building tension. The tense scratching starts around 14:00, with plodding bass underneath. After about a minute, this turns into pounding, but still soft, atonal guitar, then dissolves into a beautiful melodic passage, which dissolves after about another minute and a half into harplike piano runs and shimmery guitar harmonics. I feel like this performance recalls the turn-on-a-dime jamming style of '94, but in the dark ambient space of post-Europe '97.

TASTE – Fucking shreds balls. Absolutely one of the best versions of Taste I've ever heard. Thrilling.

SAMPLE IN A JAR> - Whatever. Good excuse for a rock guitar solo I guess.

ROCKY TOP – Rocky Top is pretty much always welcome. Placement seems a little odd as anything but a set closer. Of course that's probably the plan, so you're not expecting...

THE SQUIRMING COIL – Strangely, in about 20 years of loving this band, Coil has only really started to click for me within the past 2 or 3 years. I guess sometimes it just happens that way. Beautiful rendition.

POSSUM – Decent, typical Possum. Nothing special.

Some really sweet spots in this show focusing on dark, spacy, ambient jams. Antelope and Twist>Taste are the highlights for me. I'm not totally sold on the overall flow of the show. I guess two deep jams in Set 1 and two deep jams in Set 2 is pretty notable, it just feels like there's a lot of filler breaking it all up. Distilled down to the really hot parts, I'd give it a A-, as a whole show I give it a B.

Sorry for the delay, I've been fighting a nasty flu for days.  I lost a few pounds and may have quit smoking, so at least I have that going for me.  I haven't read any reviews, so apologies if this is a restatement of others' opinions.

Probably because I didn't see any shows that summer, I haven't listened to many summer '97 shows.  I know I've heard this one before, but I definitely did not pay as much attention as I have for this review.  The first thing I noticed is how jarring the audience is at the beginning.  Perhaps I should listen to more AUDs...

Theme
I love this song.  Perfect for an opener during a summer show.  Nothing earth-shattering, but just right.  The show has started, and I'm sure I've seen something I'd like to try.

Beauty of My Dreams
Page is just ripping.  This seems fast.  I like it that way.  Trey's solo is concise shred.  Perfect.  Nailed ending.  Cool start to a show.

Gumbo
I'm feeling the flow with this song choice.  Feels like summer to me.  Seems like fun.  Then Trey starts toying with those rapidly picked notes around 4:45.  Then they all seem to lock in at 5:20.  Off we go.  Sounds like pass the hey around 7:45.  It's interesting, I'm digging this groove, even though very little is occurring.  Sometimes I forget that a lot of the awesome of 97 is in the deliberate journey to get there.  They don't seem to be in any rush, just throwing random colors out there, not shifting the loping groove all that much, just feeling the place out.  They sound really comfortable with who they are and what they're doing.  Woah, shit's getting a bit weird around 11 minutes.  Page's slow drone in the background is tripping me out, and I'm sober as shit at my desk at work.  Cool little fade out.  That was a nice pleasant surprise jam for the audience.  They are fucking lapping it up.

Dirt
Nice little reality check.  Was probably weird to go from a rarely jammed-out oldie to a new song.  Trey's tone is gorgeous.  Short and sweet.

Sparkle
I'm tempted to go to the bathroom as I sit at my desk.  Fighting the urge...

Ghost
Ha.  If you timed your pee break as you should, you were rewarded.  As the song is new, it sounds like they are still working out the vocal parts.  Someone sounds like my imitation of whale mating calls.  Fish?  Eh, who cares.  It's not like the vocals are what brought me to Phish.  This kind of chugs along, I like how they pick it up a bit at the 8 minute mark.  Oh, and Trey on the wah at 8:30?  Always a good sign (at least back then).  So, again, it seems to chug along, not bad for a new song, but nothing mindblowing, though I do love me a nice melt into...
Swept Away>Steep
I like this combo.  Nice placement.  If I had been there at the time, I woulda been all  :-o  after my piss break.  Love the scream ending.

Loving Cup
After Trey just scared the shit out of me, this would have been a nice warm embrace.  Standard version.

So, a nice first set.  Looking at the set list and song times, I thought I'd love this.  Having listened, I very much like this as a first set, but I don't LOVE it.  Seems kinda short.  Real nice flow, though.  Onward.

Olivia's Pool
Huh?  Who are these guys?  What is this?  Eh, I guess I didn't follow the Europe Tour and am just an oblivious fool.  This is fun, and should be longer.  Kind of a tease.

Antelope
Can't complain about the placement here.  I love where the song is around the 7 minute mark.  Chaos.  Sounds coming from all directions.  I love the layer of sound that is under everything.  And then the drop into the darkness around the 8 minute mark.  Interesting that Excel just crashed on my computer.  Either it was a function I did or the music just seeped in.  I'm going with the latter.  Shit seems to be working it's way back to "normal" at the 15 minute mark, but this is still hectic.  Oh, whatever Trey did from 15:20 to 15:30 is cool as shit.  Mindfuck here.  I keep thinking they'll drop into it, but they keep going further out.  And boom.  Wow, that was 10 minutes of why I see Phish, but instead of it being spread among 5-6 songs (3.0 style), it's continuous.  Ahhh, the good ole days.

Wading in the Velvet Sea
Another new one.  I love the Antelope siren still going off.  Quite the contrast between that and the gentle lyrics/music of this song.  What else can you say?  Trey's tone is great.

Twist
Again, I'm trying to put myself in the mindset of being there at the time.  I would have been totally WTF once this started.  Vocals sound good first time through, but rough as all hell the second time.  Keeping the theme going from the first set with the Ghost in that regard.  So the twist begins in earnest around the 6 minute mark.  Within a minute, it seems they have their parts carved out.  Shit starts to melt around the 8:45 mark.  Whoa.  Good thing I'm reviewing this at home baked out of my gourd having just tried a new vaporizer for the first time with my first wax purchase.  Each minute seems to get deeper down the rabbit hole.  I think Trey found something at the 11 minute mark.  Amoebic jam.  I fucking love this stuff.  Trey's doing some twisted Doppler effect thing at 12:45.  And the wah returns.  Finally at 16:20 they have landed in a pocket of beauty that could never be replicated.  That place.  But then that place slowly becomes obscured by darkness and fades into

Taste
The rolling start to this flows really nicely from Twist.  I am reminded how much I really liked this song when they first started playing it.  Fish's vocals sound awkward, but you quickly forget that once they start running through the crack part of the song.  The accelerando is awesome, as it seemed to be every time they played this for the first few years it was in the catalog.  Machine gun starts firing up about 6:30 in and is in full effect by 7:30.  And about 4 minutes later, all I can envision is Marty McFly after Johnny B. Goode.  Also, I'm pretty sure Trey came at some point there.

Sample
"Oh, you want us to throw you a bone with one of the classics?"  This is an odd choice.  Oh right, we ceded control of the situation a few songs ago.  They are in control.  Then this totally makes sense here.  Crowd goes nuts at 3:45.  Not sure why.  Delayed reaction from the Trey explosion?

Rocky Top
Huh?  Cool, the mindfuck continues.  Leo gallops through a solo.  Barely time to catch your breath before

Squirming Coil
Perfect.  There is good placement as far as point in the set and there is good placement with regard to working with the flow of the set and the music that has transpired to that point.  This one nails both, IMHO.  It's cathartic, even if it's not a standout version.  Tension>Release.  Trey>Page.  I hear a DEG from Page during the outro, didn't see it on the setlist, so maybe it didn't happen.  Doesn't matter.  Great way to end that set.

Possum
Another great selection.  This one feels restrained for some reason.  Never seems to really open up.  Would I have cared at that moment?  Not a bit.

So I went into the second set thinking I liked it on paper.  I kinda loved it after listening.  Will definitely re-listen to the Antelope and the Twist.  I may just throw the whole set on to make that easier on myself.

Overall, I'd give set 1 a B and set 2 an A-.  Nice flow throughout, show gets a solid B+.  You know, average/great.

Theme From the Bottom - cool opener, nice and chill.

Beauty of My Dreams - energy starts to rise. love this 1-2 right outta the gate.

Gumbo - summer 97 funk starting to birth outta this gumbo. mike mvp on the jam. great jam.

Dirt - little breather after that gumbo! love this son, helps me to think abnout all my phriends that passed.

Sparkle - tension > energy builder

Ghost - Nice start, def seems like they are excited playing this new tune at the time. jam gets going mike still mvp. Trey seems to be holding back a little this show but not in a awy thats bad. He is doing everything right. Nice peaked theme jam at the end.

Swept Away > Steep -  fuck yes ghost > swept away > steep is blissifull phish right there. Reminds me of how amazing the ghost > FEFY was in asheville 09.
this is why I love phish, dark and funky ghost > underwater blissful swept aawy > steep.

Loving Cup - Nice. Solid set closer.

I dig that pick. I don't ever hear that show talked about since it's pretty overshadowed by the Amsterdamn run.

Set 2:
Olivia's Pool - Dig this as an opener. kicks off the set with some energy. standard version, wish they would bring it back in 3.0 :wtu:
Run Like an Antelope > here we go! weird vocal thing in the beginning. band is gettin loose. super tight intro. crowd is loving it. trey hits some nice high notes. great work from trey. missed start but they get it whippin. lope gets groovin. nice use of effects by trey. space lope coming thru. love this tone for trey. he def takes the driver seat in this. him and fish carry it. page and mike not far behind. trey brings in the funk and mike puts some legs on this jam. full on face melting shreddage on this one. multiple peaks. kills. rai rai rocko funk this space is gettin hot.
Wading in the Velvet Sea, - meh, yeah.
Twist -> trey is eager toget back into the funk you can hear him messin with some wah and other effects during the 'wouldnt twist around' section. then this jam just get nasty right out the gate. nice crazy delay jam. creeps comin, goose bumps, head explodes, but a theme and notes are still being played in this ingalactic noise cloud. its still moving. calms to spce and then
Taste - nice placement, good execution, still high on the twist.
Sample in a Jar - nice energy booster.
Rocky Top - time to get dancin! nice bluegrass in this jammy set.
The Squirming Coil - solid closer. love coil and its a great closer. mind would be fried after seeing this set, a coil would soothe the soul and mind after this scorcher, and it does so nicely.

Encore: Possum - solid encore. after this show, what do you expect?
B+

Set 1:

Theme From the Bottom:  Like this as an opener.  Great version.
Beauty of My Dreams: Excellent version.  Love the pace.  Vocals are clear and solo is hot too.
Gumbo: My fave version of this song and alos my show highlight.  This is the goods.
Dirt: I always like this song.  This version is no exception.
Sparkle: yep.
Ghost: Surprising in this slot.  Solid effort, great jam.  Love the way it drops into:
Swept Away > Steep:  I love this combo.  Glad they don't play it too much.  This is typical '97 goodness.
Loving Cup:  I like the unpredictablity of this set as far as song placement goes.  This is a decent version too.  Great first set IMO.

Back to review the second set shortly.

Set 2:
Olivia's Pool: Pretty cool for a 2.5 minute opener.  Not a lot going on, but a short and sweet warm up.
Run Like an Antelope:  This is a meaty Antelope.  Sure, there are a lot of flubs but the jam gets out there.  Can't remember the last 20 minute Antelope.  I love when it starts to get spacey around the 8 minute mark.
Wading in the Velvet Sea:  I did't like this track back during this time, but I like it more now.  Not my first choice but they do decent job with it. Changes pace of the show for sure, and not in a good way imo.  Trey's solo at the end is tasty though.
Twist:  This has some great parts too.  They go off the rails a couple times and lose focus but they are trying.  Gets kind of disjointed but they are hooked up for the most part.  Another set highlight.  I like the way the melt into Taste.
Taste: A pretty solid version.  Picks up some steam.  Is there a Lone Ranger tease in there?  Trey is burning through the solo.  Some nice wah work. Clean ending.

Sample in a Jar: Bad slot for this song but could be a worse song.
Rocky Top:  A good version.  Summer 97 has some of my fave Rocky Tops and Uncle Pen's believe it or not.....
The Squirming Coil: Great version.  Trey and Page at the end is another set highlight for me.  Trey should have stayed out longer.  Page stretches it a minute or so longer than he should have but there is some nice Bill Payne-esque stuff going on.  A nice way to close the set.

Encore:
Possum : A rocking version of one of my favorite encores.  If you don't like teh Possum, you need to have your ears checked.

All in all a solid show.  Typical Summer 97 with a few highlights (Gumbo).  Good pick, I enjoyed listening.  I give it a Bee.....
