Here it is, not the best show out there, but def. some highlights.  This one is of major importance to me.  At some point during the Cities opener, I "got it" which allowed me to totally freak out during this show, and that weekend at Hampton.  And without further ado my pick will be my 3rd show:

I got this show from this torrent (http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=2509)
which was a minor fix done by matt vernon.  His notes include the following.

This is a minor fix of shnid 6366 -
a fade was undone so set 2 can be included on one disk

If anyone has a better source, I'd love the "upgrade", but for now, this'll have to do.  There is nothing particularly wrong with this source IMO.

Nice pick!
But i would consider 07-24-1998 and 08-01-1998 as being shows from "'98"....

I had a blast at this show! the crosseyed and painless tease in 2001 gave me chills. i lived in winston-salem at the time so it was like going to see phish at the mall or the movie theater. weird!

But, I don't think our fans do happily lap it up, I think they go online and talk about how it was a bad show.

great pick.  I am planning on seeding 1998-11-11 for my project tomorrow, so I was a bit concerned when I saw q998 on your pick.
Can we talk about the Dead?  I'd love to talk about the fucking Grateful Dead, for once, can we please discuss the Grateful FUCKING Dead!?!?!?!

I haven't listened to a show from '98 in quite a while.  Okay, here are my thoughts:

Cities: I've never heard a Phish version that I liked more than the original and the same goes with this one.  But nonetheless, it's still good.  Nothing crazy but an enjoyable listen.

Curtain: Always a nice treat.  A little slow and Trey seems to be the only one with audible vocals, which kind of kills any harmonies.  But it's pretty well played and segues into:

Sample: Oh well.  Not much to say about this one.  Standard.

Ginseng Sullivan: Pretty standard fare, as well.  Still...a good tune.

Bouncing: Meh

Maze: Sweet.  Love this one.  Whoops, Trey goofs around 2:50, then flubs the lyrics a bit a couple seconds later.  Some nice guitar licks shortly thereafter, though.  A couple minutes later....man, Trey has some wicked sustain on that guitar.  He's gotta have an eBow built into it somehow.  Anyway, some real nice playing on Trey's part going on.  Great climax.  Solid version.

Something: Hmmm, looking at the tracklistings, I was wondering if this was going to be the Beatles tune or not.  I didn't know they covered this.  They do a pretty good job of it.

Ghost: I think I'm in the rare group of people that don't like this song, although I do like the turn this one takes after a couple minutes.  Listening to this makes me really wish I was watching the light show right now.  It's not a very "funky" Ghost, which is what I'm so used to.  Actually beyond the opening couple minutes, there's no funk at all.  It's actually pretty rockin'.  Me like.  Then they take it down slowly and go right into

Golgi: Standard Golgi, which they pretty much all are.

All in all, a decent first set, highlighted by a nice Maze, with a solid Ghost and Curtain.  I guess I'd give it a B.  Nothing crazy, some standard fare.  Not too much jamming except for Ghost.

Quitting time.  I'll listen to the second set some other time.  I'm off to the liquor store.  Weekend's finally here.

I'm gonna start my review here, as I listen. I'll update the post as I go.

Set 1-

Cities opener is cool but it doesn't really go anywhere "special". Just ordinary rocking.

Curtain is tight and well played; always a favorite of mine. and I like the way Sample slides out of Curtain...
Sample, of course, rocks but that isn't unusual or notable.

Ginseng Sullivan! I love the bluegrass tunes. Trey's tone is great, the vocals are keyed in nicely.

Bouncin'. I can hear VaSlim groan all the way from Nebraska. he must've been at this show cos they always played it for him.

Maze is pretty rocking. Not mind-blowing.

Something is sweet. Ahhh, Page Sing.

Ghost starts out loop-a-rific. then after the verses it settles out into a spacey groove.

more later.

Alrighty, just got back from a long road trip to a wedding, and made my girl listen to this on the way home.  I had to explain to her that this was my weekend "homework".     She, sort of, understood and didn't mind because she has seen them before, and I rarely make her listen to them, considering how much I do  .  I will say that even though "I got it" at this show, I still didn't really understand what my friends were talking about in reference to "They play a different setlist every night"  My first show was 12/28/97, so there were a handful of repeats for me, most notably, the cities, curtain, sample trio to open the show.

12-28-97 USAir Arena, Landover, MD

1: Julius, Cities-> The Curtain-> Sample in a Jar, The Old Home Place, Runaway Jim, Farmhouse, Funky Bitch, Split Open and Melt, Bouncing Around the Room, Character Zero

2: Axilla*-> Simple**, Ghost-> Drowned^-> Scent of a Mule, Halley's Comet-> Slave to the Traffic Light-> Rocky Top-> Cavern

E: Bold as Love

Don't get me wrong, I had an absolute blast at this one!  Anyway, since no one has reviewed the second set, I'll start there.

2001-  Spacey intro, which really had my curious.  But as far as 2001's go, this one is pretty standard.  Well played though, and I remember freaking out about the light show, especially during this.  Thank you Chris!

Rock and Roll-  I had heard the Velvet Underground version on the radio before, and always dug it.  So this was a pleasant surprise.  And besides, this was only the thrid time they had played it and I had seen Sweet Jane earlier that summer at Merriweather, so I saw a trend forming here.  Little did I know.  I have always liked how they went directly from the 2001 exit into the RNR here.  As for the song, I feel like they nailed it.  Page's vocals are on, and a rockin' Jam.

Taste- This was a treat for me because I hadn't seen it live yet.  I had heard it on Billy Breathes and live on Slip Stitch and Pass and really enjoyed those versions.  I still to this day, really enjoy the build in the jam of this song.  Pages key work is great on this as well.  And Trey is noodling around that quite well.

Frankie Says- Ok song, nice to get, but I don't listen to this song alot.

Gumbo-!!!!!!!  Another treat, and might even be the highlight for me.  I had heard it on ALO.  Little did I know I wouldn't get another until some 20+ shows later at, you guessed it, the epic version that was 07/22/03.     This was a well played version and finally a little funk.  This leads into...

Chalkdust- Short and Rockin to get the crowd going again.

Frankenstein- This one got me, and I thought for sure they would end the set.  I just remember being amazed at Pages Keys and how much he was adding to the song.  Another one that I had heard on the radio, but never live.  I think the boys add alot to this one.

Been Caught Steelin'-  This was a fun one.  I had never seen the tramps.  I look over at my buddy and was like WTF are they doing.  I was hooked.  Nothing spectacular, but They were def. having fun with this one.

YEM- Again with the tramps, and a fun Vocal jam with a special guest.

All in all, this one got me, big time.  I had a great time at the show.

Cities - like how Phish play it, prefer it to come out of a segue in a jam.
Curtain - nice, well played
Sample-I like it
Ginseng - well done
Bouncin-I normally like this, but by now I'm waiting for them to stretch things out
Maze-a relatively stretched out version of maze - not what i was waiting for, but def a very good version of this one
Something - nice. Page does a good job, just wish he didn't screw up a line in the 2nd verse (nit-picking, but Beatles lyrics are sacred). enjoyed it
Ghost - nice jam, espec about 9 min and again about 13. not the best, but solid
Golgi-end of set 1
solid, not much special

set 2
2001- nice start for the set. always encouraging
RnR - starting to jam; they're groovin now. very nice segue into
Taste-I always enjoyed this song, this version is a good one
Frankie Says-ok
Chalkdust-cool intro, solid as usual
Frankenstein-rockin, standard (means good)
Been Caught Stealin-not what I would choose for a closer
YEM-well played, good, but not great jam, nice bass/drums

highlight for me was RnR>Taste
solid show. B+
Thanks antelope
