used a technique called "painting with light"... because of the 10 second exposure, my father was able to use a flashlight to "paint" the statue with light without being seen.  in some exposures he actually walked in front of my camera and you can't tell in the image.  pretty cool trick... and this is a favorite.

infrared filter

i only shot infrared film once, but i thought digital infrared was awesome... i had to create a custom white balance for the d70 and then put an infrared filter  (which is completely opaque) on the lens.  tripod necessary (but i shoot 95% of my stuff on a tripod), and a higher iso... but i think the results are awesome, and it was a blast to play around with.

I have lost/given away pretty much all of my finished pieces..

But I found these "throw-aways" a while ago at my parents house.  Not sure on the specifics of what I did to each... but it was all done on 35mm b&w, and put to glossy paper by yours truly.

not finished/not good.  started coloring in the water with pastels.

sepia, I believe.

I forget what this trick is called.... maybe polarization?  ugh... been too long since I have thought about photography.

pastels.

stretched the photo by exposing the paper at an angle.

yeah... not so good.

nice work so far...

however, i may be able to add a gallery app to the 'paug.  everyone can then post pics, you can rate them, browse by user, leave comments, etc.  not sure how well it works, but i'll play around with it in the next day or so.

I'm glad you put this up!  I know there are some artists around here.  iirc, slim does some cool stuff.  I am actually going to an all day seminar this weekend in B-more to learn different techniques such as the ones you mentioned.  It's sponsored by Nikon, but mainly basic and advanced photography classes.  I'm pretty excited and hope to learn some new stuff and improve on some other stuff that I really need to work on.  I am still very much a novice but just really, really enjoy taking pics.  It makes me get my arse off the couch and go do stuff.   :-D  I plan on getting to some pics of Lake Powell, Grand Canyon and Monument Valley from that same trip and hope to post a few here as well.

taken last march, early on morning when the fog was super heavy.

we were out driving around one of the lakes in the city a few days before this image, and i really wished i had my camera cuz the fog was crazy thick, making for some really cool images, but alas no camera... but i caught a break that weekend and i awoke early on morning to find thick fog... so i hoped out of bed and went back to the same lake to tool around and grab some photos.

Here are a few from Arizona Hot Springs, literally less than 30 min. outside of Vegas and a heck of a day hike:

Taken with my Rebel xti
Lense: Canon 28-135 IS

1) Natural Springs do crazy things to the rock.
2) The ladder leading up to the "jacuzzi" of sorts. I am really on the fence with this image and a few others as to which I like best.  This one in particular gives the best idea of what it actually looks like, IMO
3) The sandbags put in place to form the "jacuzzi"

Thanks man!  I was kinda bummed that we couldn't stay later for some better light.  The hike down was kinda long and we didn't want to be hiking back in a place we didn't know very well at dark.  So we decided to head out.  However, it was well worth the trek.

i feel ya... thats the downside to vacation photography... you gotta take what you can get when you get it...

thats how most of my trips are these day... i'll post some arches np images soon... we were on a trip to my brothers wedding and made a week vaca out of it... spend one evening at sundown there, and i got up early the next morning to hike up to delicate arch for sunrise... wish i had had more time for that, but thats vaca photography.

excited to see more of your work.

Jedi,
Do you do any post processing/editing in photoshop or other program?  I am not any good at it(yet, hopefully) so I don't really do anything.  I am hoping to attend a seminar or class in the future.
Title: Re: paug art gallery
Post by: jedifunk on May 22, 2008, 03:02:34 PM
i used to be a photoshop guru... but i've taken to using Lightroom almost exclusively these days..

i shoot RAW only, and Lightroom is a one stop application for cataloging, stacking, culling, and editing all my photos...  its fairly light on my cpu & ram (especially when compared to photoshop)... it offers all the photographic adjustments necessary without all the extra BS that photoshop is bogged down with these days.

originally i was using apple's aperture, but once lightroom had a free beta and i tried it i made the move to it as it just seemed a bit better, especially in image manipulation... which it should since adobe has made its name with photoshop...

i really like aperture as its very user friendly and has some great and unique features, but at the end of the day, lightroom just made producing great images easier.

cool.  So in general, do you find yourself doing a lot of post editing?  I am sure you are at the point where you are good enough to not have to.  Or at least it seems that way in your work.  I on the other hand do this because I really enjoy it and am still a novice.
Title: Re: paug art gallery
Post by: jedifunk on May 22, 2008, 04:36:08 PM
yeah, i don't really do a lot of post-processing....  i try my best to get it right in-camera... i will also usually do anywhere from 3-10 frames of each composition to get the best combo of aperture & shutter speed.

i shoot almost exclusively on a tripod... and i'm mostly an aperture priority sort of guy... and i usually try to shoot at f/8 or f/11.  just something that i learned from my dad.
Title: Re: paug art gallery
Post by: antelope19 on May 22, 2008, 05:01:26 PM
Interesting.  I am beginning to use the tripod more and more.  It's been a bit of a struggle because I can be ADD at times and I really enjoy shooting sports too.  But for the nature stuff, I am learning it is necessary.

speaking of my father... i may or may not have mentioned it here, but he is a professor of photography at pacific university in oregon.  he's been teaching photography for over 25 years.

anyhoo, a few years back he bought me my old powebook g4 in exchange for doing the layout, design, and typesetting for his Intro to Photography book that he uses in his 100 level course.

its a great book for getting all the basics ingrained in your head.

if you're interested i could send you a pdf of the book to help you raise your skill level.

Photography is art.

Picture taking/snap shots are not.

And yes, there is a difference.
Title: Re: paug art gallery

I always considered it more of a science.

Anyone can take a good picture.  It may happen by accident or randomly, that's why there are professional photographers.
Title: Re: paug art gallery
Post by: jedifunk on May 23, 2008, 11:52:33 AM
anyone can paint a picture too... its all in the expression..

photography is simply a medium by which one can express themselves, just the same as watercolor, or sculpture is.

thats beside the point really... i started this thread with the hope that members would post "their own artwork" be it photographs, drawings, paintings, whatever...

but now that you've gone and posted something that you purchased, i suppose that just as acceptable as user created art...  thoughts?

FYI, there is a paid version of the gallery which will allow for individual user galleries, ratings, and much more - but it is $50 for a year of updates, and I am not going to be using that very much myself, so if anyone really wants those extra features, the Paypal button is on top of the page

nice work mopper!

hey tet... is there a way to control file size?  i looked at the preferences, but it was a bit limiting in terms of options..

i guess what i'm looking for is that when an image loads that its not at 100% size... both of moppers images are really large, which is fine, but it would be nice if the initial load was smaller and if you liked an image and wanted to see it larger you clicked on it.  does that make sense?

Agreed.  It would be more like the forum itself.  The way it is currently makes it kind of difficult to view an image.

just an FYI, i removed the ability to link the photos... we can discuss adding that back in, but  i took it out based on past experiences...

i frequent naturephotographers.net and at one point we had issues with images from the site (that users had posted) were showing up on other websites without permission, and in some cases people claiming that they had taken the photos themselves...

so i'm going to remove this feature for now, and if there is enough backing for it, we can add it again at that time.

well regardless wheter or not i understand how this thing works...

i managed to score a new to me/ FREE! camera yesterday!

its pretty dope, but i'll have to wait to use it until i can order a USB  and adapter for it online... should only run me around $20 though.
apparently its a pretty dope camera too from the reviews i browsed. supposed to be the best of the kodak'easyshares' ever made or somethin, with a very nice lens. 10Xoptical/3Xdigital zoom; 4.0 mega pixels.

so hopefully someday i'll bve able to set it up and use it.

Glad you like it!  That was taken during the mad rush to get inside on the first night.  But to answer your question: no, not yet.  It's so much easier to just click "Convert to Black and White" and then select which style you like.   :-P

I may try to do that, but I have to set aside a good 30 - 45 minutes or more if I want to do it right.

When it's like that, with the words right side up, it looks like it's under water. And the boat looks like it's on a fishing line. The 'reflected' moon in the 'sky' looks like we're looking up at it and the cliffs from below the waterline.

When it's like that, with the words right side up, it looks like it's under water. And the boat looks like it's on a fishing line. The 'reflected' moon in the 'sky' looks like we're looking up at it and the cliffs from below the waterline.

Whoa! Totally changed my way of looking at it. Yep, that sounds about right, change my vote, DVD, you might of had it upside down.

Why would the moon be brighter "under water?" And what about the stars? They are also brighter "under water"? The words and boat are upside down! And when hung this way you can clearly see the reflection of the moon and cliffs in the water. Not "under". Go get one, you'll see! 8-)

So I decided to try and delve back into my creative side.  I used to sketch a lot a long time ago but haven't in a good long time.  I bought a little sketch book and some pastel pencils the other day.  I just sat down for the first time with it and tried something easy and did a quick little humpback whale

What do you think.  I don't think it's that bad considering how long it's been since I've sketched anything

After looking at it some more this morning, I'm not done with the giraffe.  Some parts just don't look right and I could smooth it out a little more.  Plus I think it's too empty in the background.  I'm going to add something, maybe a Safari Jeep.  I just think I need to put something back there

Just a little desert landscape to facilitate experimenting with black canvases.

that's real nice man. real nice. keep them coming.

let me ask, how long does a piece like that take you? Also, do you have a photo you maybe use as a base, or is it completely coming from your imagination? Or do you have a mental photo in mind, or a place you are pulling from memory?
Title: Re: paug art gallery
Post by: VDB on June 17, 2016, 03:17:03 PM
Hey, thanks A!

I got the inspiration for this one from the Bob Ross episode "Cactus at Sunset". Mainly chosen because I wanted to try the black canvas technique, and I also liked the way he did the clouds. Beyond that I did my own thing. I consulted Google Image Search a couple times when I was having trouble with the water, and to decide how aggressively I wanted to tackle the desert floor (behold my elegant solution).

This was done in several sittings over multiple days, as time and desire permitted. I don't know exactly how long, but it ended up taking several hours, due to wrestling with things like the river and cliffs and also completely re-doing the sky after not liking it the first time around (I did leave one little remnant, which had been just a happy accident, in the upper right area).

Of course, if you just want to crank out a by-the-book Bob Ross canvas, you can do that in 27 minutes if you can keep up, or a little longer if you need to pause.

Several hours? 27 minutes at a quick pace? Whoa man, I was thinking like a few weeks an hour or two a night. Seems I grossly over-estimated either a. your talent and/or b. how easy painting is.  :hereitisyousentimentalbastard  :hereitisyousentimentalbastard  Seriously though, looks good. It reminds me of that book The Road (Cormac McCarthy), although the book was much darker than the painting represents, still...reminded of it for some reason.

Haven't read The Road but I did see the film. If we're talking McCarthy I could see a little Blood Meridian motif here, but that wasn't on my mind at the time.
