Hampton '09 Remembered
« on: July 25, 2011, 09:19:44 AM »
Hampton '09 was so much fun.

All of the promise of Phish's return, along with an infinitude of questions. Optimism reigned as we walked into the Coliseum that first night and the haters hadn't yet received their haters club satin jackets (which are super dope, btw.) The paug, as you may remember, was a hotbed of that optimism and wonder. The Hampton announcement brought a surge of new members and the return of some who had drifted away and the fountain of speculation flowed like crazy, spawning threads like crazy.

One thread also kicked off the grand Week4paug tradition of the Live Setlist Thread:
Phish.com - From the Road - 2009 [Hampton Shows] ***SPOILER ALERT***

Today, I will kick off the first in a three-part series wherein I shall recap those threads, focusing on the "live setlist" portion of things and with an eye toward what was funny, positions that have changed, and, above all, revisiting the excitement of Phish's return to the stage.

No bullshit, this will possibly lean heavily on my perspective at times but, it's also very much about the happenings in the LST among the folks who were at home.

Fluff

Is that your pick or a call roving reporter RJ.

Yeah cut that out RJ

HOLY CRAP!!!

unbelievable

hopefully its played well

Reality'd. But don't be a bummer, man.

Sounded bang on to me.

Divided

Seriously, I cried through all of Divided Sky

:-o :-o :-o :-o

Would be nice to get Gumbo updates as we go

Chalk

No questions
Just rawk

That was a reply to the cry for updates about Gumbo's well-being and the scene at large. Honestly, I was barely able to handle setlist updates on my Blackberry that night with the shitty mobile browser and even shittier signal. I'd post an update and immediately click the reply button so that, during the song, the reply page could (and would) take its sweet damned time loading. Besides, there was this Phish thing happening. Since Hampton, I've tweeted from shows but never as diligently. Besides, it's never again going to be as important as it was here.

Sick

Sample

effin sick setlist so far imo

Stash

F'in A!

Dunno about you guys but I was dying as this setlist unfolded before me.

and now I died.

There you go, then.

I didn't know

w/ Dad on vac
& trey on drums

Okee pa

uh oh...

> Susie

this is so sick!
rj is so much faster than .com

Farmhouse

Another song after Farmhouse?

I'm re-calling Antelope for a post Farmhouse win!

thats what i was thinkin!

So good

Nicu

did not expect NICU, this seems to be a extra long first set...

Nope...average length... it hasn't hit the hour and a half mark yet.

NICU>Setbreak most likely.

I think that curfew at the mothership is 11:30, and breaking now gives them about 40 minutes or so to talk about how fucking awesome that set was and to prep for the onslaught and killer jams in the second set.

I think they might save YEM for the third night.

So here is what I think we are in for in this second set.

Wilson,Simple,Bowie,Disease,Piper,Strange Design,Antelope and Glide.

Man, there's some fail in that post...

NICU doesn't seem like a closer though.

Horn

Horn doesn't seem like a closer either. . .

can't end on horn, cavern maybe...

Bowie is my call

Rift

Yowza

March 6th, 2009
Hampton Coliseum Hampton, VA

I: Fluffhead, Divided Sky, Chalkdust Torture, Sample in a Jar, Stash, I Didn't Know, Oh Kee Pa>Suzie Greenberg, Farmhouse, NICU, Horn, Rift

uhhh, can I just say holy shit?

Train song

No setbreak tonight?    :-o

epic call?!?

We were starting to wonder, I think.

Water in th sky

They're running out of room on the From the Road Page! They'll have to start a new column.

Slow water in the sky, btw

Coil

Just on and everything looks amazing.  Coil should be the closer.  CAN"T BELIEVE THE LENGTH OF THIS SET!!

Coil would be a perfect set closer at this point.

i agree, coil closes with a Page solo as everyone else walks off...

:phish:

Hampton Coliseum Hampton, VA

I: Fluffhead, Divided Sky, Chalkdust Torture, Sample in a Jar, Stash, I Didn't Know, Oh Kee Pa>Suzie Greenberg, Farmhouse, NICU, Horn, Rift, Train Song, Squirming Coil

Wait for it...

Wait for it...

Bowie

wtf?!?!?

Bowie

Wow! Trey's a dick...:D No songs will be left by Sunday.

Took me a while in reading this to realize that PhishPhan was packing to fly to VA...

Set one = Phish is Back

Oh, the optimism. I certainly believed it.

Hah.  Phish.com ran out of space to post the setlist.

That didn't suck even a tiny bit

Sweaty here.
Paste the full setlist please?

*slow version

16 songs!!!!!!!

Tet had the first set timed at 1 hour 53 minutes!   :-o  :-o  :-o

Got the same text. They started at 8 on the dot, so I guess they're milking it.
Totally unreal.
Why aren't I there again?

I asked the guys around me, "Thoughts?" This is what I got:

Gumbo says nothing, smacks forehead

Birdman says fluffhead was the kick in the nuts

LOL

But like a good kick in the nuts, right?

::insert Phix joke here::

Why did I have to do the responsible thing and buy solar panels?

I coulda been there.

I'm just stoked to kick it here and watch the setlist updates with everybody!   :beers:

Gumbo just apparantly jizzed himself.

i think he's gone for good  :-o

You think this'll effect his plans for Umelt tour?

Caravan has appeared from the masses

Would be nice to get Gumbo updates as we go

Ive been getting Gumbo txt all night, hes my boy . Hes enjoying himself, although i think talking to him would be funnier than a txt, im shitting myself and im at home and havent heard a note yet.

Maybe a forbins or harpua w/narration somewhere in the mix

there will be narration

So since the trampolines have been given away, are there new ones?

New tramps should have frikkin' lazer beams shooting out of them.
a

New songs vibes are hitting me.

Night One, Set II we we return.

It bears noting that Pie-Guy got the spot for us each night of the run. He's not mentioned in my play-by-play because he was not yet a pauger. Birdman had just introduced him to us that afternoon. (And I'd forgotten his name by showtime.)

If Fluffhead was the kick in the nuts, D-Sky picked us all back up and gently sat us on a cloud.

Damn that was a good time!

AACB stayed at my place during the run and I think I met a few others, maybe RJ in the lots over some home brew, can't remember.  Fenway was definitely the sealer.

btw, I really miss Hampton.

Possum

These missed calls just make me laugh. We all make them but sometimes the timing is makes me LOL.

Good luck on your perfect setlist, I'm hitting the hay. Leaving for Norfolk at 4 AM and had no sleep last night. Have fun all.

I actually wanted to not see the list prior to listening to the show, so goes that...

Same here, but I let myself get suckered in.

yeah f that spoiler free hoo ha.

Theme

siiiiick

We're still waiting for the jammer, Theme might be it.

For some reason I thought that Theme might show up tonight.

Heard a good theme today (7.1.95) and had that same feeling.

I only said that because I was singing it on the way to my car about an hour ago.

well this is certainly an uncomfortable silence.

Bowling, lol.

was trying to not do this but I am now just hitting refresh at phish.com and week4paug, repeatedly

I had no pretense of avoiding this reality tonight.  Plus I have nothing better to do. :-D

and voraciously texting everyone I know that is there. Its sort of pathetic but I can't help it.

I also really like rj's yem encore call

Yem

I called a YEM encore? Must have been in one of the speculation threads that were so rampant before the shows.

False start.

Ok... NOW

Yem

playing all the hits!

I'm down to this at this point:

  :beers:  :samurai: :phish:

Tramps

They're officially back.  :beers:

No god

we know your views on religion, how bout the show?  :-P

I just meant that they skipped "God" and sang, "Boy! Man! Shit!" He came back with a laughing "GodShit" after that.

Cactus is throwing down the bombs

then there is a god...

I'll say it again; I can't wait to hear this shit.

And thanks again for the play by play RJ

hopefully in a couple hours, i may stay up all night and wait

thinkin that the reprise will end the encore...

second'd

luv bouncin as an encore  :-)

Doesn't look very jam heavy.

It kills me I grew up one exit form hampton and saw every show there from 96 to 1/2/03 and could not be there.  Living out west has its downfall too i suppose.   I literally had tears in my eyes when i saw they opened with fluffhead and divided sky...what a statement!  two compose pieces back to back.

any comments on style of play, how the fluffhead sounded?  i guess we will all hear tomorrow morning.    Be safe those lucky to attend, I can't wait for Alpine!

dear fucking god, did they leave anything for tomorrow?

Just got back from the show, and what a show it was!!!  Monster 1st set...
The fluffhead was well-played, but it was so loud that a lot of the sound was drowned out!!! Be interested to hear what the SBD looks like!  Soo tired..  WHAT A SHOW!!!!!!  :phish: :phish: :phish: :phish: :phish: :phish:

Mandi and blat checking in.  Mr Miner is full of shit.  where's my download??

hooray!

WHAT AN AMAZING FIRST NIGHT!!!!

i can't wait for tomorrow!

 :-D

Just got back from the show

as many of you know, this was my first show and to say the least, mind=blown

The energy in that place was like nothing I have ever experienced and the Fluffhead/Divided Sky opener combo blew everyone away

I have absolutely no hesitation in saying that this was the most well polished, and practiced Phish since pre 2000  :-o

The entire show was nearly flawless with the exception of only a few parts (the YEM restart was more humorous to me than dissapointing)

Ill try and post a song by song review soon!

Happy first show WhatstheUse?, MiamiPhish, and Gumbo! You guys got a helluva show (well I haven't heard it yet, but from what I've heard, you got a helluva 1st show). Glad you guys had a good night!

Not one gamehendge tonight...  :-D

can't really give a song by song review right now but highlights for me were:

-Fluffhead opener played practically flawlessly....right off the ba you knew they meant business!

-Chalkdust had a pretty great peak iirc

-STASH, this was IT....best jam of the night imo, it got way out there and back

-Oh Kee Pah - nearly FLAWLESS!!!

-Suzy, got a little funk going, and page's solo was played on some sort of synth

-Horn, played so beautifully and near perferct iirc

-Tweezer brought the 3.0 Funk!!!!!! that shit was nasty!

-Harry Hood........yah, i cried

Waste, honestly one of the best versions i have ever heard, trey was just ripping through his final solo

Cranking the first set! Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

We'll leave the thread here.
No one has woken up and applied a critical ear to the playing at this point. Already you see notice of the lack of extended jamming, but the enthusiasm still rules.

The vibe at the show was unreal. Probably the most unified audience vibe I'd experienced since the 90s maybe? And, honestly, I'd never experienced an energy like that at a Phish show. Pre-show was just fun. running around the lots... Hampton was familiar yet, now, so different from the last time Phish played. (New lots, Convention center, etc.) And the new friends. Along with the old friends we brought along, we paugers met up and bonded. We celebrated and became friends.

And after the show, sweaty, happy, and tearful, we hugged and got ready to do it again tomorrow!

Cool thread idea RJ.

3/06/09.  The day my life forever changed.
Phish makes me happy.  It's as simple as that.
