Title: Decemberists Thread
Post by: shoreline99 on September 02, 2008, 12:43:23 PM
Quote
In our last e-missive, there was a passing reference to the fact that summer is upon us. That, my friends, does not appear to still be true in some northwestern climes. Fall seems to be creeping in with its mossy, moldering fingers.

And so: what better time to hit the road to bring our Decemberists' entertainments to the public, to the masses? And so: the Decemberists will be bringing the Bridesmaid Revisted Tour 2008 to a few fair US cities in November. Dates are as follow:

11-05 New York, NY - Terminal 5
11-06 Boston, MA - The Orpheum
11-07 Philadelphia, PA - Electric Factory
11-08 Baltimore, MD - Ram's Head Live
11-09 Ithaca, NY - Cornell University, Barton Hall
11-11 Montclair, NJ - Wellmont Theatre
11-24 Los Angeles, CA - The Wiltern
11-25 San Francisco, CA - Warfield Theatre
11-29 Portland, OR - Crystal Ballroom
11-30 Seattle, WA - The Moore Theatre

A limited number of pre-order tickets go on sale today, September 2nd, to the public on a first-come, first-serve basis at http://www.decemberists.com.tickets.musictoday.com. General ticket on-sales begin on Saturday, September 6th for East Coast dates and on Saturday, September 13th for West Coast dates. Our good friends and fellow PDXers Loch Lomond will be opening the dates.

Wasn't really that excited, but would've gone to see a Toronto show...

Did they ever make up the dates for those shows they canceled?  Weren't they going to play one night of all long songs, then another night of all short songs?

That tour was outright canceled after one two-night stand.

The recordings fromt hose shows (Chicago) are on the Archive and are terrific.

What was the reason for canceling?
Title: Re: Decemberists to tour this fall:
Post by: rowjimmy on September 03, 2008, 12:19:27 PM
I believe it was illness.

They had previously canceled some Europe dates and then tried the long & short of it tour a month later but the person was not well enough to manage.

end of sons and daughters. should have grabbed more video. i'll post a few pics later.

RJ, the setlist was pretty much the same as 10/30, but they added several more songs in INCLUDING Mariner's Revenge, where Chris Funk came out with a stand-up cardboard figure of Obama instead of the giant whale mouth :)

Shame you didn't shoot more video, that was a cool vantage point.

I sort of agree with Matt, I hope they tour soon and come to DC.

didn't have enough space on the memory card. i swapped out with my buddy to try it out at the end. it was a GREAT spot to see the show. i had read horrible things about the sound in that place, so i wanted to be in a decent spot. you can hear how the sound drops off greatly just as i panned the camera.

hope you guys get to see them. unbelievable show. they played until they got thrown off the stage due to a curfew on the performances; they actually started before 9 and played for about 2 1/2 hours with no real break. i'll post a setlist later when i can focus.

Title: Decemberists New Album - Hazards of Love
Post by: shoreline99 on November 18, 2008, 06:53:39 PM
http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/index.php/2008/11/18/in-the-studio-the-decemberists-return-with-fairy-tale-album/

Quote"Everyone's going to call it a rock opera", says the Decemberists' frontman, Colin Meloy. "I've just got to come around to that." Meloy is in the midst of mixing the band's fifth album Hazards of Love, at an Oregon city studio. It's very different from the Decemberists' 2006 major-label debut, The Crane Wife: producer Tucker Maritime is piecing together 16 or so segments into a continuous, hour-long narrative suite that riffs on folk-song archetypes. It's a twisted, fantastical story about a woman named Margaret who is ravaged by a shape-shifting animal; her lover, William, who is desperate for the two of them to be reunited; a forest queen; and a villainous rake. "There's a story there, but it's really painted in broad strokes," says Meloy.

At first, Hazards of Love was going to be an actual musical, staged by director Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening). The story that Meloy came up with, however, was "practically unstageable," the frontman says. (The pair are still hoping to work together, perhaps on something about a 1917 labor dispute in Montana.)

Musically, Hazards of Love is the Decemberists' full-on classic-rock move, with Meloy and guitarist Chris Funk's pretty Zep-style fingerpicking punctuated by crushing stoner-metal lurches. They're joined by guest vocalists including Lavender Diamond's Becky Stark, who sings the knockout "Margaret in the Taiga", and My Brightest Diamond's Shara Worden. "I wanted to have different voices singing different songs, so it would be like a fake musical," Meloy explained. On the Decemberists' spring tour, the band will be playing the entire album straight through.

In the meantime, the quintet are touring this fall behind a new series of singles, most notably "Valerie Plame", an ode to the outed CIA operitive. "When she was in the news," Meloy says, "I'd hear her name all the time on the radio - the cadence was perfect for a pop song."

Sounds Dope.

The Decemberists are the most unassuming rockers since Phish.

I also love Becky Stark.

Final thought: Valerie Plame is a great tune.

Valerie Plame was a lot of fun live, with the crowd totally into it. Of the new songs, there are few that I don't like and if that's any indication [that these didn't make the cut for the new cd], it should be great.

The new CD drops March 24th. Several of the new tracks are floating around as live versions.

oh, and congrats on 10k.  :beers:

It's one of the B-sides of the Days of Elaine single.

I can't wait for the records to come. I cheaped out and ordered them with the single-shipping option so I have to wait until next month for the package.

Yeah, i looked last night but was too lazy to post.

RJ, if you have time, grab 'The Island' from the MSU show. it was the highlight of the show. That and the fact that Colin Meloy says 'Hello University of Michigan' at the beginning of the concert...

Colin Meloy played at the Newport Folk Festival a few weeks ago and played a few new songs, they're pretty good. During the set Black Prarie (the bluegrass band that is the Decemberists minus Meloy) came out and joined him for a few songs. NPR has the set streaming.

QuoteThe Decemberists haven't played a headlining concert since August 2011, but they're shaking off the rust in support of a great cause: On Friday, May 30th, the eclectic folk-rock band will present "V Is For Victory," a benefit concert raising funds for an Oregon school for autistic students.

The band will perform the entirety of their debut LP, 2002's Castaways and Cutouts, along with other "sentimental favorites." The show will be held at the Crystall Ballroom in Portland, kicking off at 8 p.m. local time; indie-rocker Sallie Ford will open.

The Crystal will probably be jam packed for that (if people still like the Decemberists).  My father-in-law built this insane guitar rack/display thing for Colin Meloy at his house that fills a whole wall and fits like 25 guitars and is basically a big giant enclosed showcase that is climate controlled and super pimp.  I need to have him build me one once I hit it big!  Colin Meloy has a son that is special needs so I am guessing they are involved in the school that the benefit is for....

I'm sure that enough people care about the band or the cause to fill that gig.

I wasn't aware of Colin's son but they've got a decent track record of doing good things for people & orgs. so, either way I'm not surprised by this. It is certainly about thine the band got back onstage.

I'd just love to see them perform Castaways & Cutouts. What a great album.

I've been on that one on and off for a few weeks.

Love it.

Wish I could hit that Cap show but it's not to be.

Seeing the full album at Charlottesville was amazing.
Listening to the recording on the drive home through a zero visibility downpour on pitch black country roads: terrifying.

You were not at the Charlottesville show. I was solo. Pretty sure I texted you after about how awesome it was and how lame you were for missing it.

Then the storm hit.

I had tickets for the HOL Radio City show but had to cancel at the last minute due to a work commitment. Teh suck. I still regret that decision.

Wife and kids are going to see the Shelburne Museum show on Thursday night (all ages, outdoor concert, picnic etc.). Can't make that so I'm glad they added a date here.

In other unrelated news, Robert Plant added a Cap date on 9/17. Anyone want in? I'm gonna grab a pair of tickets if I can. Saw him there on his first pass through, it was an awesome show.

Really enjoying this band lately, their new album and their back catalogue. Learning some stuff of theirs too on the piano, probably will post June Hymn on FB and if/when so will bring it into this thread. Their NPR Tiny Desk Concert has been on the loop for weeks, and their latest was played out during a recent FL to IN drive.

Band brings a smile to my face.

So, any thoughts on the new album?

I've been listing to it quite a bit this week, thanks to streaming from NPR before I found a copy.  This one does for me what I want a Decemberists album to do.  The first couple of listens you like certain songs and not others.  On subsequent listens, you begin to like all the songs as a theme emerges.  Then the whole album sits in your head.

I'm an admitted fan boy and generally lap up everything Meloy writes.  I was first exposed to him at poetry readings in Missoula in the 90s when I had an obsession with becoming a poet myself.  Following Meloy at several of these readings showed me just how far I had to go to really write something unique.  I once made him, and the rest of the audience, sit through a reading of "Celebration of the Lizard" by Jim Morrison.  Fortunately he read next.

I mention that because his writing brings me back to that time, and for that I probably give him a little leeway.  The shout out to Rimbaud and Baudelaire in "Suckers Prayer" brought me immediately back, as those were very hot writers in those circles at that time.  Also fits with the theme of unrequited love if you know the story of Rimbaud and Baudelaire, and I liked the Virginia Woolf twist.  I also once wrote a long poem to try to win over a girl during this time, and creeped her the fuck out.  Creeps me out to think of it now, and I cringe every time i think of it.  Youth.

The album as a whole is pretty dark, even from the Decemberists perspective.  "Severed" fits well in the age of demagogues.  I liked the synth work in this song and "Cutting Stone" more than I thought I would, but after a year of hearing Page break new ground with the instrument, i was open to it.  "Once in My Life" and "Tripping Along" are my least favorite cuts on the album.  The former is repetitive in a way bested by "Everything is Awful" on the same album.  "Tripping Along" just hasn't grown on me.  "We All Die Young" is a departure from the usual Decemberists sound, but I groove to it, and like the addition of the children's voices, which give it the same creepy effect found on Hazards of Love.  "Rusalka, Rusalka / Wild Rushes" is just another great Decemberists dark love/folk/proggy composition.

What do you guys think?

I really, really like this new one. I've listened to it every day since my vinyl arrived on Monday. The synth is used nicely throughout and it's a nice addition to the Decemberists sound. It definitely still has the trademark dark and cryptic Colin lyrics but with a poppy twist, I like it.

I'm loving the album. It really does have a dark view of the world but hey, I live in this world and I see it too.
It sounds like The Decemberists without sounding like too much like the other records. The songs are, mostly short, self-contained songs with only two cracking 5minutes ("Once In My Life" is 5:09 and "Rusalka, Rusalka/Wild Rushes" runs just over 8) which gives the impression that the big prog experimentation is still on the shelf. The synth sounds stand out a bit but aren't jarring or unpleasant. Overall, another solid to great record from a consistently dependable band.

Cutting Stone is quickly becoming my favorite song on the album. It has a very 'Roger Waters' baseline that I love.

A couple questions if any of you happen to know....was any of the Hazards of Love tour captured on video?  I haven't been able to track anything down but thought I'd throw the question out there.  Obviously not talking about cell phone footage, but actual pro-shot video.  Also, I remember they played a killer version of The Wanting Comes In Waves on the old Colbert Report but that was on my old DVR that has since died.  It seems everywhere I've looked, the videos have been blocked for copyright infringement.  Anyone happen to have a copy of that one lurking anywhere?  Couldn't find anything on the hubs.

Did anyone here order the 'Exploded Version' of I'll Be Your Girl? I'd like to hear the four songs that are only on it.
